Cold Earth
Cold Earth: A Shetland Mystery | Ann Cleeves
19 posts | 17 read | 13 to read
From Ann Cleeves, winner of the CWA Diamond Dagger Award, comes Cold Earth. In the dark days of a Shetland winter, torrential rain triggers a landslide that crosses the main road and sweeps down to the sea. At the burial of his old friend Magnus Tait, Jimmy Perez watches the flood of mud and water smash through a house in its path. Everyone thinks the home is uninhabited, but in the wreckage he finds the body of a dark-haired woman wearing a red silk dress. Perez soon becomes obsessed with tracing her identity and realizes he must find out who she was and how she died. Cold Earth is the seventh book in the beloved Shetland series, which is now a major success for the BBC.

I love this series! Always a solid mystery with a twist I didn't see coming. Love the language of Ann Cleeves writing style and learning Shetland words like Knapping - losing the accent for the benefit of Soothmoothers - those not native to Shetland. I hope when I visit no one Knapps for me. #shetland #bookishtravels #teaandbooks

Andrew65 Me too, one of my favourite series. 2y

Starting Cold Earth by Ann. Cleeves, Book 7 in the superb Shetland Series by Ann Cleeves. I love the remote location and the characters and feel of community within the book. I love spending time with Jimmy Perez. If you can‘t tell in thoroughly recommend this series. #shetland

These will be my books for the #24in48 Readathon. I will be starting in around 2 hours at midnight and reading midnight UK time on Friday/Saturday to Midnight Sunday/Monday. Don‘t think I will get to 24 hours but let‘s see how much I do clock up. Strategy : Physical books when I am awake enough, Audiobook (The Pillars Of The Earth) when too tired to physically read or am driving. Already part way into three of these.

eanderson I haven‘t read anything by Ann Cleves but I‘ve seen good reviews! I‘ll have to give them a whirl. 2y
Andrew65 I would strongly recommend her Shetlands series, love that series. Cold Earth is Book 7 in the series. 2y
Eggs Love Shetland 2y
Andrew65 @Eggs Glad I‘m not alone. I also loved the Lewis Trilogy by Peter May. 2y

My #readathon stack for tomorrow! I have an unavoidable church thing in the afternoon, and let's face it, I won't be staying up all night. 😜 But hopefully I'll have a good 10 hours of reading time! So I have a couple of addicting thrillers, a graphic novel and some kidlit to break things up, and When Dimple Met Rishi and A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty on audio, for when my eyes need a break. #deweysreadathon

ChasingOm I loved Dimple on audio! 2y
daydreamin_star I love Dimple and A Darker Shade of Magic! Good luck! 2y

I really enjoyed this book, I have seen the series, Shetland, which is very dark & moody and helped set the scene reading the book as the Shetland islands are very different to where I live now or grew up. The book & the series are not miles apart & I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

EvieBee Sounds lovely! My library just started ordering all of her books so I'm happy. I've only watched Vera, but I'll have to check out this series in both book and tv formats. 3y
charissharpe @EvieBee I LOVE Vera! 3y
robinb Think I might like to check out this series. Thanks! 3y
charissharpe @robinb they're quite character driven & the Shetlands shine as a character in its own right too, I hope you enjoy them. 3y

This will be me really soon... today is my last day at work & then I'm on holiday! We're off to Dorset & it will probably rain so somehow I don't think I'll look quite as glam as the lady in this pic (found via Pinterest) 😂 but I really don't mind!

Taking The Pillars of the Earth, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu and The Stars Are Legion books with me to read & am hoping to keep up with #lotrchapteraday & The War on Women on my kindle 📖

Texreader Sounds like wonderful me-time 3y

Bk7 in the Shetland series. Not as good as previous ones, it felt a bit rushed I think, but still a pick for me. I read them more for the atmosphere and the beautiful descriptions of life in Shetland, it's so hard to find great stories based in the Scottish Isles, either Shetland, the Orkneys or the Hebrides. Jimmy Perez is at Magnus Taits funeral when there's a landslide. Rushing down to check, he finds the body of a woman, but was she already dead?

Got to Chapter9 with Flavia but wasn't really feeling it, so I'm switching to the last (so far hopefully) Shetland book, No7 in the series. Attending the funeral of Magnus Tait, DI Perez watches as torrential rain triggers a landslide that sweeps down to the sea. But along with the mud, a body is uncovered. Sounds like another great addition to a fantastic series!

JazzFeathers Well, that's a great premise ^_^ 3y
