Lady Anne rules with reason, logic&wisdom after the outbreak of the plague kills her brutish husband. She isolates her community from the rest of the world&keeps her people safe while many around them die.In quarantine bad things happen within the walls of Develish:a murder, rape allegations.I liked it but wish it was shorter, wish Eleanor was multi-dimensional! &there was a proper ending.Thanks @Chrissyreadit for recommending!

Chrissyreadit I‘m glad you enjoyed it! there is a sequel that ties up the loose ends. 5mo

Mehso-so

Had high hopes for this one ... was a bit disappointed. Premise is juicy, characters are intriguing, writing is quality ... bit in the middle is (Black) deathly boring!!! I was nicely engaged then all this non-exciting stuff starts going on and it's all described in so much intricate and tedious detail that it ruins the flow of the book! Picks up a bit at the end but the damage was done! And it's only the first part ... can I endure book 2?!

Ruthiella That‘s disappointing! 5mo

Starting this one tonight - my first read of this author. It's wet and wild outside in the UK tonight, so I'm very happy to be tucked up in bed!

intothehallofbooks This is one of my favorite series! I hope you enjoy! 6mo

This was good but very slow and very long.

In the 1300s, bubonic plague is causing widespread death. While the (vile) Lord of the manor is away, Lady Anne hears of the pestilence and brings all her villagers inside the protection of the moat and cuts off contact with the outside world. Lady Anne and her people remain disease-free but eventually find their stores dwindling and some must venture out to see what's left of the outside world.

Bummer deal. I‘ve enjoyed mysteries by Minette Walters, but this combo of historical fic and mystery is poorly written all round. The characters are static & wooden, there‘s tons of info-dumping, and the mysteries just… aren‘t. I do love a well-written Plague novel but my #Bookspin isn‘t it. Better luck next time. ⭐️1/2

TheAromaofBooks I'm not sure why, but I'm always extra disappointed when a book with a beautiful cover doesn't work out 😂 2y

I enjoyed every second I spent reading this. The Black Death is interesting on its own, but my favorite part was how the Lady of Develish and all of her serfs made accommodations so they could survive the pestilence. Lady Anne was ahead of her time in methods for cleanliness and sanitation, and the grace and love she showed each class of people that worked for her made her a pleasure to read about. Waiting on my hold for the second book!! So good.

Started this morning and loving it so far!!

Set in Dorsetshire, England in 1348 just as the Bubonic Plague makes landfall and begins to spread. This subject, time, and location are all in my wheelhouse and I‘m excited to have a book like this to fall into this weekend.

Chapman‘s Pool, Dorset #VirtualTour

How was Monday? A bust day today with two Governor Committees, a meeting with Lower Primary Staff and a day of paperwork and improvement planning. Tomorrow a busy day redesigning the curriculum.

#DailyCheckIn

TheSpineView Today was busy bit productive! Got lots done which makes me feel good. Just need to fix dinner then I can crash and read a bit. 3y
CocoReads Cuckoo banana pants. I‘ve done nothing but run for the last 2.5 hours straight. It‘s a full house tonight and everything is weird. Is there a full moon or something? Also the weather is awful. Cold rainy with snow on the way. Cannot wait to go home. 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Fairly quiet day for me though some of the guests seem to be giving the desk staff a hard time. My guy got shot #1 yesterday and chose his non dominant arm but the tenderness coupled with existing shoulder pain rendered the arm practically useless today. I'm about to head home to cook dinner, walk the dog, and possibly help him shave his head. Good times. Oh, the things we do for love!😁 3y
tracey38 Today was a busy day and a little crappy, too. But that's ok, Monday is now done! Now to read before bed. 3y

kezzlou85 Not sure I'm ready to brave a summer holiday this year. Had one of those days where you feel off but don't know why. I'm blaming it on hayfever. 3y
TheSpineView Today was beautiful. The weather couldn't have been better. I spent 5 hours at the barn. Not only did I ride but I cleaned my tack too. It felt so good to have clean stuff. Now I am reading a bit before dinner. It has been a restful day. 3y

CBee @TheBookHippie holy s*** it‘s a mess where you are 😳😳😳 3y
CocoReads It was slow until 4:30-5, when several things happened all at once: late deliveries, care funds, etc. pushed my last run late, which I‘ve finally gotten through but I still have one thing to do, which I can‘t do right now because the pharmacist is in my way. But we still have 40 min left so no worries. 3y
CocoReads @TheBookHippie it‘s awful. We aren‘t as bad as you guys yet. It seems we run about 3 weeks behind GR, so I know it‘s coming. 😬😬😬😬 3y
