My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress | Rachel DeLoache Williams

Sex and the City meets Catch Me if You Can in the astonishing true story of Anna Delvey, a young con artist posing as a German heiress in New York Cityas told by the former Vanity Fair photo editor who got seduced by her friendship and then scammed out of more than $62,000. Vanity Fair photo editor Rachel DeLoache Williamss new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generouspicking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Annas credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn. Anna asked Rachel to begin fronting costsfirst for flights, then meals and shopping, and, finally, for their $7,500-per-night private villa. Before Rachel knew it, more than $62,000 had been charged to her credit cards. Anna swore she would reimburse Rachel the moment they returned to New York. Back in Manhattan, the repayment never materialized, and a shocking pattern of deception emerged. Rachel learned that Anna had left a trail of deceitand unpaid billswherever shed been. Mortified, Rachel contacted the district attorney, and in a stunning turn of events, found herself helping to bring down one of the citys most notorious con artists. With breathless pacing and in-depth reporting from the person who experienced it firsthand, My Friend Anna is an unforgettable true story of money, power, greed, and female friendship.

Kicked off the #24in4 by finishing the final 60 pages of this book. The overall story of Anna is compelling. However, this book, written by a one-time (for a short time) former friend of Anna's, is drawn out. Anna conned Williams into using personal & business credit cards to pay for a trip. I don't feel much sympathy for Williams as a victim. She mentioned friends and a support system, a good job, NYC life, but she seems desperate for Anna's

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick friendship and approval. I was hoping for some more inside information about how Anna pulled off her long game con, but I got a lot of Annie Liebowitz name dropping. Oh well. The sky is dark, the twinkle lights are on, and Watson is warming my legs. @Andrew65 #sundaybuddyread @TheBookHippie 7h

Honestly so many 🍌🍌🍌

What struck you?

How many ppl didn‘t speak up you think?

The rich lady whose cards were repaid. The fashion friend.

Staying on a yacht passed your invite ?!

The grift was severe!

Latest I could find https://www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/arts-and-culture/a38962970/where-is-an...

Librarybelle So many 🍌🍌🍌 indeed! She has some sort of power to be able to do what she did, claim her innocence despite all of the facts that dispute everything she said, and still have people wanting to help and to support her. Reality is stranger than fiction for sure. What a 🍌👖 ride. I‘m sure there are a lot of people who have not spoken up, because they are embarrassed. The wealthy do not like to show weakness. 6d
IndoorDame It‘s hard to imagine just how many others there are, but she probably got away with a lot! This story really is 🍌🍌🍌🍌 and all that stuff about what she‘s doing now is almost stranger. She‘s just getting smarter about how to run her cons legally (ish) and stay floating in that world 6d
AmyG Agree with @Librarybelle that many didn‘t speak up because they got conned. If the lady who spent money on clothes for Anna got paid back? No harm, no foul. Don‘t speak up and get revealed for being conned. 6d
See All 8 Comments
Deblovestoread Exactly @Librarybelle no one likes to appear foolish especially the rich and famous. And is her art good or is it just her name? And the dinner guests…curiosity seekers or people willing to be conned? It is all just craziness. 5d
DebinHawaii It‘s a whole lot of 🍌👖 🍌👖🍌👖for sure. I am sure there are so many who didn‘t speak up & for who losing some money was less important than looking like a fool. It was really interesting reading about her plans - I will admit that would be on board to watch what she does. The whole story just fascinates me. (Says the person who binged 2 different docuseries on the Twin Flames “cult” yesterday. Don‘t get me started… 🫣🤣) 5d
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread straight up bananas! 5d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii oh I‘d keep watching it fascinates me to no end 😵‍💫😅🤣🍌 5d
Sargar114 Agreed @Librarybelle @DebinHawaii @Deblovestoread their image is more important than the money. Plus they even said in the series, the money gets paid back by insurance and whatnot so that doesn‘t really matter in the long run. 5d

The lawyer ? Interesting? Weird ?

The trainer Kacy
Seemed to be the only one not using Anna? Or was she?

https://www.etonline.com/trainer-kacy-duke-reacts-after-watching-inventing-anna-...

Librarybelle I think the lawyer also got sucked into Anna‘s realm. Blowing off a family vacation when he wasn‘t really needed…ugh, in my opinion. As for Kacy, I‘m not sure of her. Her allegiance was the least defined. She seemed more centered than anyone else and perhaps was not as enthralled with Anna, but I‘m not sure if she‘s completely unblemished. 6d
IndoorDame I don‘t think Kacy was using Anna any more than is normal for a professional relationship in NY. And she definitely came off slightly better than the others. Possibly because she was a little older and more together so she never put up money she couldn‘t afford not to get back, and set boundaries before things got totally out of hand. 6d
Deblovestoread Kacy got lucky to get sick in Morocco. I think if she had stayed it might have played out differently since she seemed to have a better head on her shoulders. 5d
See All 9 Comments
DebinHawaii While the lawyer did seem to get sucked in, I keep going back to “if he wanted to be there, he‘d be there” in his vacation decision. It seemed like there were other issues & things at play than just feeling protective of Anna. Kacy had more sense & maturity than the others, although depending on how much of the “intervention” with her friend & the aftermath was real, she lost common sense points for me. Did she think that would actually work? 🙄 (edited) 5d
Sargar114 That whole vacation vs end of trial felt like dramatization for the show. I think if you spend that much time with anyone you start feeling some kind of attachment. 5d
Sargar114 As far as Kacy, she seemed to have a more practical head on her shoulders. Anna paid her so she had more of a professional relationships. I agree if she stayed in Morocco it may have turned out different but I don‘t know if she ever would have been take advantage of. 5d
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii the intervention was so 🍌🤯😵‍💫 I‘m not sure what they hoped to accomplish. 5d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I would want to see it all the way through -just as a rule. I tried to view it as how people view me sending kids things and visiting them in jail if I was their mentor. People think I shouldn‘t, I think they don‘t know the system or the kid. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5d
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie I agree, it seemed more weird to me that he would leave. I feel like I‘d want to see it through. Especially after investing so much 5d

Librarybelle Vivian was definitely taken in, which made me not so happy to see. You could see the evolution from the first episode to the last, how she was skeptical and needed a big break to having the big break, yet caring for Anna to the point of hanging with the defense and being so upset that she tarnished Anna‘s name in anyway. 6d
IndoorDame Vivian‘s character was definitely taken in despite her attempts to maintain her journalistic skepticism and neutrality, and when I read in the Parade article you linked that Jessica Pressler keeps in touch with Anna that choice started to make sense to me 6d
AmyG I, too, think Vivian was a bit taken by Anna. It made me wonder…the sort of “charm” the actual Anna had that made people befriend her. I didn‘t get a feel for that in the movie or book Anna but it had to be different in person. 6d
See All 8 Comments
IndoorDame @AmyG same. Whatever she has definitely doesn‘t come across or paper or on screen, but it has to exist 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6d
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame let‘s hope it exist ? Or is it the middle school click everyone wanted to be friends with “her” mentality in grown up version? 6d
Deblovestoread There is some quality in Anna that seems to generate loyalty, but don‘t all con artists have that? Whatever that is it didn‘t really come across in the book or show. Vivian and Todd both are portrayed as being protective of Anna in the end..a young girl alone in the big city. (edited) 5d
DebinHawaii I liked this quote from one of the articles: “Is she evil, or is society evil?” Pressler posits quite often. “Which is it? I don‘t know. She was kind of allowed to become this because this is the way the world is. And it‘s pretty fascinating.” I think Anna both fascinated her & charmed her & though that charisma doesn‘t come through readily in the book & on screen, it seemed to work on those who stayed somewhat loyal to her despite all she did. 5d
Sargar114 I agree with y‘all, she was likely swindled. But also spending that much time with and focusing on one person and there story it kinda makes sense. The book she doesn‘t seem charismatic because it was written by someone who felt she was victimized so Anna will never come across well. 5d

Neff…more than a side thought here
Also she was a consult on this Netflix series… https://www.vulture.com/article/inventing-anna-neff-character-true-story.html

Librarybelle Do you think she was a side thought in Rachel‘s account because she was pro-Anna? Or, did selling her life rights make her seem more valuable to the story? I‘m not sure…jury is still out for me. 6d
IndoorDame Another character who baffles me. Why is she one of the few people Anna worked to actually pay back? Why is that enough to earn Neff‘s ongoing loyalty in the face of her obvious crimes against others? 6d
AmyG Selling her rights? Money. And probably hoping for a little fame to get her….anywhere. 6d
See All 9 Comments
DebinHawaii I think she was a side character for Rachel because like she said in the interview, she & Rachel weren‘t at all close. I find her interesting with her having ongoing relationships with both Anna & Jessica Pressler. 5d
Deblovestoread Neff is interesting. She seems to understand that Anna is a con but because she wasn‘t a victim she can still be her friend? 5d
Sargar114 I think both @DebinHawaii @Deblovestoread got it right. Neff was one of the few people she paid back. Also from the show seemingly supportive of her filmmaking so maybe there is that sense of loyalty. There is clearly something charismatic about Anna as well to make people believe her when she seemingly has nothing to offer. 5d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 I wonder if she perceived her as poor and the others rich? So she didn‘t want to harm her? 5d
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie it‘s possible. It also seems Neff didn‘t try to get anything out of her more than what was expected of their relationship and maybe Anna appreciated that. Maybe that‘s why she actually paid her back and not Rachel 5d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Agreed. Plus Rachel WAS waaay over the top IMO. 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ 5d

We still don‘t know Anna…

Thoughts on her? Did she have to resort to this con lifestyle after losing her boyfriend ? Weird mode of Survival?

IndoorDame Still such a mystery! The series managed to hint that she was both a child sociopath, and that she actually learned how to be a con artist from her boyfriend (even though in real life he never got that app out of the conceptual phase) and people like the guys behind fyre festival… Somehow those ideas about her seem at odds to me 6d
Librarybelle She is such a mystery! I don‘t think we‘ll ever know her true origin story. What amazes me is the amount of people who have fallen for her cons, know she is a con artist, and yet still stick by her because they think people don‘t understand her. That makes them pretty naive in my mind…Anna needs help. Finding the best avenue for help for her is the best thing to do, not buy her special undergarments because she does not like the ones she has. 6d
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I wondered about that!!! 6d
See All 12 Comments
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle I imagine she‘ll be a life long grifter 😅 6d
AmyG She is a sociopath and a grifter. Grifting to get money and attention is what she feeds on. How can people keep falling for her con? Look at Trump. You tell me? 😳 (people are nuts) 6d
TheBookHippie @AmyG thought of Trump constantly ..🤬🤮 6d
DebinHawaii Definitely a mystery & a fascinating one at that-it‘s hard to look away from her chaos. 🫣 Yes, @AmyG 💯!!! 5d
Deblovestoread @AmyG 💯. I just don‘t get it. 5d
Sargar114 Such a mystery…that‘s a lot of the appeal. I don‘t understand how people still associate with her other than thinking they‘ll use her for now her notoriety 5d

SO -Your opinion of Rachel change???
Honestly I think the book is accurate to the series 🤦🏻‍♀️👀🍌🤷🏻‍♀️🤯

IndoorDame I thought the book and the series matched up surprisingly well. And the fact that she sued over her portrayal majorly reinforced my opinion of her! The only thing that changed was the series ramped up my anxiety about her using her corporate card. And I went from wondering how she wasn‘t fired (or fired sooner?) to just how lucky that they didn‘t press charges. 6d
Librarybelle My opinion of Rachel has not changed! The show reinforced my thoughts of her. 6d
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame that was my thought!!! It‘s a crime .. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ she is portrayed accurately. 6d
See All 11 Comments
AmyG @IndoorDame @Librarybelle Agreed. My opinion of Rachel was reinforced. And yes, on brand her suing because she didn‘t like how she was portrayed. And yes…how did she not get fired for using the corporate card???. 6d
5feet.of.fury I watched the series before reading & I thought based on Rachel‘s feelings on the series that there would have been more to her side of the story… for me she came across the same… I can understand being upset that Netflix paid for Anna‘s defense… but that‘s it 6d
DebinHawaii I watched the series when it came & had a bad opinion of Rachel. Reading her book reinforced that opinion & maybe even made it a bit worse. Watching the show again this past week after reading the book kept my opinion the same. In her own way, she‘s as manipulative as Anna & yes, she should have had repercussions from the company credit card usage.😤 5d
Deblovestoread The show increased my dislike of Rachel. And I can‘t figure out why she thinks she was portrayed differently in the show compared to her book. Why doesn‘t she just take her ill gotten gains and fade away. 5d
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I agree!!!!! Go live your life. Seriously 😵‍💫🤯🍌🤦🏻‍♀️ she‘s no different than Anna. 5d
Sargar114 I actually think the show is a little more flattering to her, up until that last episode. But compared to her book I don‘t think it portrayed her any differently that her book. It‘s amazing she didn‘t get fired other than the magazine recognized she had a story to tell and Amex ultimately covered the charges anyway so they didn‘t lose any money. 5d
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 you could be right it boggles my mind she used a company card. 5d

A true story, written by the victim of a con artist. Unfortunately, the con artist and the victim were both a hot mess. I really wanted to like the victim/author, but as I turned the pages, I liked her less and less. She made so many naive, poor decisions, I found it almost hard to believe.

But, reading it with the #SundayBuddyRead crew was, as always, lots of fun! Thanks, @TheBookHippie for shepherding us through all the #OyToTheVey moments!

Had to rate this a pick! I don‘t think I‘ve ever had such a visceral reaction to a book!
I wanted to throw this across the room several times. I was screaming in my head for Rachel to get a clue, STFU, get real! This was a train wreck..and I couldn‘t look away! Initially felt sorry for Rachel…by the end of the book I felt she & Anna deserved each other. Cannot believe she wrote this, especially as her cc charges were reversed. ⬇️

Bluebird Attention seeking…in all the wrong ways. Keep me far away from her! Thanks to @TheBookHippie for a great buddy read! Sooo glad to share this wild ride with the group! 1w

I‘m not going to hate on Rachel (too much), it took guts to be honest about this (ridiculous) situation. I‘ve been around people who are a vortex, one can‘t help but get caught up in their insanity. Anna could have been a cult leader if she didn‘t care more about shoes & instagram pics.

The book itself; mostly it is just Rachel relaying text messages or rehashing disputes with credit card companies. &No one comes off as particularly bright.

Sargar114 I think my biggest issue with Rachel is her lack of accountability. I do agree she got taken advantaged of but she was complacent in a lot of it. This story feels a lot like her trying to make herself look better in light of everything that happened. I agree with you that even with this version, it was probably incredibly difficult to do. And this is such a wild story that I ultimately interested in reading her perspective. 2w
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 I couldn‘t believe how long it took her to really confront Anna, or even file the fraud charge… & there were red flags before she got stiffed with the bill. I think it could have benefitted from extrapolating more on their friendship or what drew her to Anna because “I thought she was neat even though she was mean to everyone & we went to the sauna a few times” doesn‘t really explain why you ended up in Marrakech 2w

#Rushathon #NovelNovember #Readathon

I had hoped that after watching the Netflix series when it came out & disliking Rachel so much, this book explaining her “truth” would improve my perception of her. It did not. The whole book is basically her justification for her actions & why she fell for Anna Delvey‘s con, but she ends up making herself look even worse. She just tries WAY too hard to be likable & relatable & she‘s just NOT. And after ⬇️

DebinHawaii … years with various corporate credit cards, the fact that betrayed by Anna or not, she used her company card to pay for a personal trip (that every 🚩 signaled she shouldn‘t have gone on) then covered it up until she couldn‘t makes me steam. 😤 That all being said, this was an entertaining selection for #SundayBuddyRead just 🍌👖enough & like a train wreck you can‘t look away from. 🫣 2w

Sargar114 Yeah the downside of this book is that I went into it wanting her perspective and understanding how you can let something like this happen. I got her perspective but still cannot fathom why Rachel made a lot of the choices she did. I can‘t imagine the difficulty of writing an experience where hindsight is 2020 but there were a lot of mentions about Anna‘s bizarre behavior yet you continue???? 2w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 It‘s a shit show. She‘s a wanna be important and famous and picked Anna? She‘s in the business she didn‘t know the difference ? OR.. people who were all that and a bag of chips treated her like a -gasp- journalist - and Anna made her feel important? I‘ve not clue. She was trying to be IN and failed. 2w
AmyG You will learn more from the series. And Rachel is suing because she didn‘t like how she was portrayed? The truth hurts, huh? 2w

Karisa @TheBookHippie And now Anna is still in the “in crowd” with the fashion show at her place thing… How do people have this much money? I just don‘t get it but can‘t seem to look away from the train wreck😅 2w
Deblovestoread Looking forward to Anna‘s side of the story and hoping it updates where she is…did she get deported? Still on house arrest? Released back to the wild? I found one clip that said deported but no other back up evidence. Inquiring minds want to know 😂 2w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread all I could find was As of July 2023, she remains currently under house arrest in her East Village apartment.🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa I‘m fascinated but also where is this money from?!?! It‘s just bananas…. Did she get money from Netflix? Also someone is doing a new documentary on where the Netflix stopped to today … 🤯😳 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser not one thing. 2w
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @Karisa it seems like she was allowed to keep ~20K of the Netflix $ after paying restitution, and now is selling drawings of herself in prison for exorbitant amounts of money (though she‘s not supposed to be on social media and clearly is, so I assume the scam continues in some fashion) 2w

lynneamch I've appreciated reading your comments and I thought about how my perception of Rachel could have been different if I hadn't been at her book launch. AmyG Anna and Rachel are on Instagram. What surprised me and made me dislike Rachel even more was that her IG profile is public. After all she has been through she didn‘t set it private? While I don‘t think she is a full blown narcissist, I think she likes herself and awful lot along with attention and her “poor victim” nonsense. 2w
Librarybelle This gets even more bizarre! I think they all deserve each other in the end. I‘m happy being an introvert who stays at home with her cats. 😂 2w

Sargar114 @AmyG @TheBookHippie I can see maybe trying to warn people about her…but the problem is, most people wouldn‘t behave like Rachel did so it‘s kinda easy to be like okay I won‘t go on a ridiculous trip with her. 2w
vlwelser She's ridiculous. I get the appeal. Obviously don't front her any money. It makes me think of all those reality shows people are into. This isn't that different from my perspective. 2w

So Rachel sues Netflix 👀😳
I‘m so excited to Netflix binge!

https://www.tatler.com/article/inventing-anna-rachel-williams-real-life-friend-s...

AmyG Attention whore and I am not talking about Anna. 🤣 2w
Librarybelle OMG! Seriously?!?!?! She better not read these comments from us! 😂 2w
Sargar114 I just started watching and in the 3rd episode. So far she‘s in it for one scene, but this is more “Anna‘s story” so she hasn‘t met Rachel yet I think. The one scene isn‘t terribly flattering, but it made sense given the context of the overall story. I‘ll be interested to see more. 2w
See All 18 Comments
Sargar114 It‘s also a Shonda Rhimes show, once I saw that I was in. So far a fun watch 2w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 ohhh that‘s right! I love her stuff! I cannot wait to see… 2w
IndoorDame @AmyG completely agree! I‘m almost done with the series and Rachel does come off noticeably worse than the other characters, but not noticeably worse than in this book, and certainly not badly enough to sue over 😵‍💫 2w
vlwelser Rachel comes off as a whining jerk even in her own story. I imagine it's even worse from the other perspective. I'm skipping the Netflix. These people do not need my encouragement. 2w
Karisa @vlwelser Exactly what I was thinking about Rachel. I probably will watch the Netflix though just to see how it compares to Rachel‘s viewpoint. 🍿👀 2w
DebinHawaii I went into the book hoping it would improve my impressions of Rachel from the series but it just made them worse! I did start rewatching it this week—I think you all will find it pretty entertaining. 2w
AllDebooks Me too. I've got it added to my watchlist 2w
Larkken Lololol - I‘m waiting for Anna‘s suing of Rachel I guess? These ladies might still be “friends “ 🍿 2w
mcctrish I have had enough of this drama 2w
TheBookHippie @Larkken THIS IS JUST 🍌🍌🍌🍌 2w
vonnie862 I'm not sure if I'm going to watch it. I'm over it. 2w
mollyrotondo The show is wayyyy better! I really enjoyed the show. 2w
julieclair What???? Did she win???? 🤯 Now I really want to watch the Netflix! 1w

Was the book necessary? Wasn‘t the article enough? Is it just a money grab? Her trying to spin the story ? Fame?

Why all the name dropping?
Client is sufficient.

AmyG Rachel seems to love attention, fame….all while trying to convince people she doesn‘t, that she was just a poor victim. 2w
Librarybelle Was this her way of getting money to pay back everyone??? That makes me sound incredibly insensitive, but the thought crossed my mind. I did not read her article, but I almost feel like nothing extra was gleamed from the book. We learned nothing about Anna, other than she was Russian, which was not a surprise given some of the clues in the book. 2w
Sargar114 @Librarybelle that‘s what I think. 2w
See All 24 Comments
IndoorDame I‘m betting the real draw for her was fame (money obviously being an important secondary factor) 2w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I think she‘s a narcissist 🤷🏻‍♀️ of what type 👀 but definitely narcissism … 2w
vlwelser The article should have been sufficient. She barely had enough material for a book. Maybe that's why there's too much extra detail. But the money from a book deal would be hard to pass up. 2w
Karisa @TheBookHippie The more I listened to her own book narrated by herself, the more I thought this too. Is she really that different than Anna? They both just craved the spotlight, a luxury life, and to be seen as cool constantly. 2w
Deblovestoread Agree with everyone 💯 2w
DebinHawaii Yes to all of this! The book is her way of getting some fame & money & trying to justify her own behavior. Not necessary but pretty entertaining to read! 😉 2w
AllDebooks 💯 agree 🙄 I can't think of any other book that has made me roll my eyes, shake my head and WTF? on every other page, as much as My friend Anna 😵‍💫 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa I think they are the same in differing veins 😳🤯🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
Larkken I realized I had read the article years ago as I was finishing this book 😆 I think I remember my reaction was more favorable to Rachel after the article? Lol. 2w
Larkken @Librarybelle lol I was so wrong I thought Anna was an American conwoman 2w
mcctrish I think Rachel came out ahead 2w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librarybelle I thought the same! 2w
vonnie862 Maybe both? 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser this is a another case of our Sunday group could write it better! 😅 2w
vlwelser Absolutely. Eye witness accounts. Commentary from experts. All kinds of more interesting things. 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser she is a journalist yes?! 🤣😅🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🙄 2w
vlwelser 😂 don't think so. Photo editor? This definitely needed photos. 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser oh yes photos- that would help!!! 2w
mollyrotondo Totally unnecessary. The article and the show explained things so much better. This was all about Rachel to keep Rachel in the spotlight. She‘s just like Anna. She‘s no different except she didn‘t steal money from financial Institutions. She just proves the stereotype of people in that scene being posers. 2w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Yup. Unreal this book is just a look at me … 2w
julieclair I liked Rachel a lot better, and had more sympathy for her, before I read her book. Somehow I doubt that‘s what she intended. 1w

Rachel got book deal -charges mostly given back -all her money loaned to her
And a HBO option..

People and articles are very unkind to Rachel
Is it victim shaming?
Is she as big of victim as she portrays?
Will we ever know the truth?

AmyG I just think she is a fool. One who loves attention and “fame”. I found it very hard to feel anything for Rachelother than a little disgust. (edited) 2w
Librarybelle Part of me is sympathetic towards Rachel - no one should have to be conned out of that amount of money - but then Rachel‘s actions lead me to not feel as much sympathy. I don‘t understand her need to still hang out with Anna after it was clear the money was not coming. 2w
Sargar114 @Librarybelle I feel the same. It sucks to ultimately have been conned, but there comes a point when you have to look back and see what things happened in order to get you there. It may have been a more sympathetic story if she admitted to some of her own shortcomings and involvement, but there is a lot of “woe is me” which makes it hard to palate. 2w
See All 29 Comments
IndoorDame I think we won‘t ever really know the truth. About either of the girls. Which is what makes the story compelling, but I just can‘t find either of them sympathetic 2w
vlwelser I stopped caring about this once I realized she had the charges forgiven. Because the first chapter was giving me anxiety I actually found that on the internet before reading the rest of the book. 2w
Karisa @vlwelser I started out sympathetic too. Then, the more it went on, I thought about how easy Rachel‘s life is and how ready to help her support system was. She was always going to land on her feet (probably while on a Cape Cod vacation). By the end, I just felt guilty for not caring about her reported stress. 2w
Deblovestoread I just kept wondering if Rachel was really that dumb…it was hard to sympathize with her after the initial trouble and failed attempts to get her money back. I think she was fighting for the lifestyle as much as the money. 2w
DebinHawaii Even though I knew the outcome, I was rooting for AmEx not to forgive the charges because while I think it sucks to have a friend steal from you & that huge amount, I do blame Rachel for so much of the situation. I can‘t get over the company credit card the most. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii The work card baffles me… like YIKES. 2w
AllDebooks I think she portrays herself as a victim, but I can't get onboard with that. She's responsible for her decisions and behaviour. Just thinking about handing over a company credit card gives me a panic attack. 🤔 2w
Larkken @DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie the work card almost gave me an anxiety attack 2w
Larkken I guess it‘s nice that other victims of fraud have found the book helpful according to the end piece. But I‘m having a lot of trouble relating to Rachel. Her bootstrap attitude is directly opposed in my mind to the beach house and the father running for office and her apartment in the city w/o a roommate. I don‘t entirely buy it, though I don‘t think she deserved to be conned 2w
mcctrish I don‘t not feel sympathy for Rachel, I really can‘t handle the disregard for rules that Anna has BUT is Rachel still a victim? She is a published author now and her debts are covered. There are millions of Americans derailed by medical debts that they will never recover from - also her not wanting Anna to know it was her that turned her in 🙄 (edited) 2w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Deblovestoread yes!!! Me too! How can someone be that dumb?! 2w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @DebinHawaii did she ever get in trouble with her employers for this? I may have missed it! 2w
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think she did IRL … it‘s vague here, probs on purpose!!! 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish yes she can come pay my medical bills 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ unreal the audacity of both of them. 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish it‘s a bit slimy the turning in part. 2w
DebinHawaii @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie I think she got censured & then was laid off in 2019 but she said it was “unrelated.” 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 🙄 riiiiiiight….. 2w
mcctrish @DebinHawaii that seemed like it was glossed over 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I agree and it makes me so anxious and physically ill 😵‍💫 2w
vonnie862 I have mixed feelings but I also do understand that people can be cruel. 2w
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 people can be cruel and I know she was young but I have really hard time with her responses. I hope she‘s healed and moved on. 2w
mollyrotondo @Karisa exactly! Every time she wrote about how much anxious she felt and how she had no money to pay off the card she‘d then say “so I went to Cape Cod” and I‘d think okay you aren‘t hurting financially that bad that you can go to cape cod during all of this. She was not a victim like the banks and financial institutions Anna actually stole money from. Anna just used Rachel like Rachel used Anna. Other scam victims lose and don‘t get back. 2w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Being embarrassed you got taken and not admitting it because… narcissist… she lost no money she suffered no Finacial loss 😵‍💫. 2w
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie yes! The credit card company cleared the charges which was mostly because the DA‘s office got involved but still she didn‘t owe back any of that money. She made out ahead. Can‘t stand her. 2w

So Anna is Russian
Her family ..🤷🏻‍♀️
We have learned NADA about Anna
Nothing …

So Anna gets arrested
Court
Testifying
Anna isn‘t convicted of crimes against Rachel
But is convicted…

THOUGHTS??

AmyG If you watch the Netflix series you learn more about Anna at the end. 2w
Librarybelle Anna is still this massive shadow. Good to know, @AmyG ! 2w
Sargar114 The mystery of Anna is why this is such an interesting story. Rachel comes across terribly even in her own telling. Of course Anna wasn‘t found guilty in Rachel‘s case, at the end of the day Rachel was complacent. Yeah it sucks that Anna “made” her pay for an all expense pay trip to Morocco…yeah let‘s read that phrase again and then just roll our eyes 💁🏼‍♀️ 2w
See All 22 Comments
IndoorDame I couldn‘t stand the not knowing, so once I finished the book I started binging the Netflix series and reading the original articles and looking through Anna‘s instagram… 2w
vlwelser The Rachel thing seems incidental to her actual crimes. Rachel also handed over her own money and credit cards. No one stole them. 2w
Karisa The Anna part was so unsatisfying. I guess we got a little insight from her family and childhood friend (she‘s always been greedy, smart, and selfish). Part of me kept making connections to Anna, influencers, and born into wealth type people. How have they earned all that they take? What makes some just feel they are inherently better than others, more worthy of attention? 2w
Deblovestoread I‘m looking forward to starting the Netflix show. Rachel had a person she considered a friend use her. Yes, to a very large sum of money but she willing gave over her cards. She could have walked away and left Anna to deal with her mess. Sounds harsh but…. 2w
DebinHawaii Yes, as @AmyG says, you learn more from the series & also the article that inspired it. Also, I found this article interesting: https://psych2go.net/the-psychology-behind-anna-delvey/ 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii ohh that‘s a good article @IndoorDame ⬆️ 2w
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii excellent article!!! The level of NY elite that she moved in really is a closed society. I have no clue how she broke in, but I can see how once she did social proof could have made the rest of her game work 2w
Sargar114 @vlwelser exactly! 2w
Larkken @Sargar114 💯 when Rachel was all upset about how she was portrayed in the Netflix show I was like -but what about how /you/ portrayed /her/?!? 2w
mcctrish Rachel didn‘t accuse Anna of fraud, she went to the police but she didn‘t have the money that all the big players had to mount an offence - she was just just a friend taken advantage of - why she didn‘t reach out to Judge Judy is beyond me 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish just spit out my coffee OMG why didn‘t she call JUDGE JUDY?! 2w
mcctrish @TheBookHippie she‘d get a fame hit 2w
vonnie862 I agree, Rachel willing gave her cards so it made sense why Anna was not convicted for this charge. 2w
mollyrotondo I was happy she was found not guilty for the Rachel charges lol Rachel is just as bad as Anna as far as wanting to be a part of that scene and will use people to get there. But definitely agree that the show gives you way more answers as to what Anna was doing and who she was. This was just a whiny book from another poser in the New York fashion/art scene. 2w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo POSER. That‘s the word!!! 🎯 2w
julieclair Being naive enough to turn over her own card was bad enough. But her corporate card? Really? I agree with others who said that the jury didn‘t convict her because she signed the paper. 1w
Bluebird Agree. Rachel willingly gave her card and signed for the ‘hold‘. Was she really so naive as to think they wouldn‘t use her card if Anna didn‘t pay? Come on! She wasn‘t some coddled and sheltered kid. Cannot believe she was that clueless! 1w

Why is she stalking Anna???
Madness.
Let.It.Go.
Why is she still calling her friend ?!

AmyG Wasn‘t she trying to get info for the DA? She wanted to be the hero of her own story. 🤣 2w
Librarybelle I‘m sorry, but I would certainly not do this. I think there‘s a “let‘s get what the authorities need” and then a “I did not learn my lesson” line that Rachel crossed. In my opinion. 2w
IndoorDame This is when I really started to see her as a covert narcissist. She NEEDS to stay at the center of this melodrama when anyone else would‘ve walked away. 2w
See All 19 Comments
vlwelser Definitely let it go. They don't need her help to catch Anna. She should move on here. 2w
Karisa @IndoorDame Right! It‘s like my students that keep going back into the middle of the mess, stirring everything up more, and then crying to their parents that they are a victim of it all. It must fill some deep need in some people to constantly be in the midst of drama. I find it exhausting. Like the DA didn‘t know to check Anna‘s social media posts… ugh 2w
Deblovestoread I kept thinking “wouldn‘t the DA tell her “we got this”? I‘m sure they knew how to do their job and whose to say her meddling wouldn‘t interfere negatively. 2w
DebinHawaii I agree about the narcissism & that Rachel‘s needs to be the center of everything. I also think it was to prove to herself that she was smarter than Anna. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii HAHA BUT she clearly wasn‘t! 😂 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa 😂😂😂 why aren‘t these people tired?! The DA was like look at this girl 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪. 2w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread They probably DID! 2w
Larkken @Deblovestoread but I guess they did need/use Rachel to find Anna - I mean if you trust the book Rachel is why Anna was arrested 2w
mcctrish @IndoorDame Rachel‘s comment about being one of them made me think “oh honey, who‘s the narcissist now?!” And her uncle ? So it‘s genetic or a calling 2w
mollyrotondo Uhh also so irritating. Why do you keep texting her? She wanted so much to be a part of the DAs case. But still there‘s no reason to keep texting a scammer 2w
5feet.of.fury Just sending the DA screenshots of Anna‘s social media… as if they do not have people, whole companies, that do this… 2w
vonnie862 This irritated me so much! Like what the heck!!! Just stop! 2w
julieclair @IndoorDame You are so right! A covert narcissist for sure, although that hadn‘t really dawned on me until I read your comment. I just viewed her as a hot mess. 😂 (edited) 1w
IndoorDame @julieclair hot mess is also a perfectly accurate description of her 😂😂 1w
Bluebird At this point I decided Rachel deserved what she got. After missing all the red flags, losing all that money and thinking for the-umpteenth time that maybe Anna will come through and pay her. She finally realizes Anna‘s a con….but hey, let‘s still be friends. 🤯 sympathy…gone 1w

Seriously
The binder…
The “we think you could be one of us ..”
Who thinks that really happened?
Who?
Who is fooling whom?!

Why did she continue to send things to the DA
And apparently everyone that they didn‘t ask for??

AmyG Before I read this it crossed my mind…..we are reading “her” version and I wondered how much she wrote to just redeem herself for being such a fool, how much is actually true. 2w
Librarybelle Exactly, @AmyG ! I was wondering that as well. Is she trying to tell the reader she did everything possible to take down Anna??? I‘d be a little annoyed with the barrage of info if I were the DA… 2w
Sargar114 @AmyG it feels like that is a big part of this book. This is “her” truth and while she did get ripped off, she was also complacent in a lot of it. Maybe she was hoping to recover some of the money from book sales??! 2w
See All 35 Comments
IndoorDame The we think you could be one of us thing was definitely a book throw moment for me! Of all the ridiculous things in here, I actually found that the least likely! 2w
IndoorDame @AmyG @Librarybelle @Sargar114 I couldn‘t stop thinking about this being her truth as I read, because I found her so unsympathetic and I‘m still not clear why she presented herself this way 2w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I had to keep telling myself she wrote this, this is her narrative, about herself! 😵‍💫 2w
TheBookHippie @AmyG I think she did a lot of SPIN. 2w
AmyG @Sargar114 I think she was hoping to get money from this. @IndoorDame I just think she was trying to “undo” her stupidity….make herself look as if this could have happened to anyone. But I think many people would have seen through Anna‘s “shit”. Rachel was just one of those who got conned and she feels stupid because this happened to HER. 2w
vlwelser This had Milton from Office Space vibes. Like the obsession. And the fascination with office supplies. 2w
Karisa @vlwelser 😂 I was specifically told that this would be my stapler. 🤓Milton is the best part of that movie.😂 2w
Deblovestoread Is it her truth? So much of it felt false or contrived to me. I believed her anxiety when she first had to ask again for her money but after that…. 2w
DebinHawaii I snorted when I read the “you could be one of us thing.” Sure that happened. If it even did, the person probably eye-rolled after they said it. 🙄 She wants the book to be her truth but it is what she tells herself to make her feel less like an idiot. 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Her truth is a bit skewed even more than a normal person… 2w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I think she trying to run a narrative that paints her victim.. that has never worked. Here it‘s almost comical… 2w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser weird obsession 🤯 binders… I mean sharpies, pretty notebooks… but binders?! 🤣 2w
TheBookHippie @AmyG it‘d have been so much easier to say look what an idiot I was in my 20s in an ARTICLE… in a book she should have given us research on Anna. The title is misleading it should say HI IT‘S ME, RACHEL.. 2w
vlwelser Pens get me every time. And notebooks for sure. The binder thing dates this. No one prints things out anymore. They'd just stick it all in a folder on the cloud. And share it. 2w
AllDebooks Oh god, the binder 🤯 2w
Larkken @TheBookHippie @AmyG omg yes, the title of this is so misleading 2w
Larkken @vlwelser lol to all of this. Oh, binders 2w

So she‘s goes to a concert
Because why not
Her friend is trying?!
That‘s what she writes?
It warmed her heart but the tone of the writing 😵‍💫🤯😳👀🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
What?!

Gillian Welch is a favorite of my sons.

https://open.spotify.com/artist/2H5elA2mJKrHmqkN9GSfkz

AmyG I found this whole Gillian Welsh concert so bizzare. Not so much that she went but that she described the concert as if she was a music critic all while being ripped off by a grifter. I love Gillian and David….it pissed me off that she went to see them…because I don‘t like her. 🤣🤣🤣 (edited) 2w
Librarybelle @AmyG Maybe she‘s branching out in her writing and hoping a sympathetic platform will let her become a music critic! 😂 I just don‘t understand anything about this book. 2w
IndoorDame Love Gillian Welsh! … I think this is part of why Rachel is so unsympathetic. Instead of economizing, or at least explaining why she‘s splurging on a concert at this juncture she just goes without thinking twice, and tells us all about it because she needs to be maintaining her lifestyle (edited) 2w
See All 13 Comments
vlwelser Why was this even included? Is she trying to prove that she has other people that care about her? Going to a concert when you live in a city is nbd. 2w
Karisa It felt like filler so much of this book and self-promotion. Yes, it was wrong for Anna to stick her with huge debt. Yet, Rachel‘s privileged life and lack of truly understanding the ease of her life is so icky. She annoyed me way more than Anna did. Having a hard time empathizing with her. 2w
Deblovestoread I couldn‘t figure out the point of adding in the concert going. Felt like filler and like @Karisa it made me not like her even more 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
DebinHawaii I felt like Rachel tried so hard to make herself sympathetic & relatable & to show that anyone could have/would have gotten caught up in Anna‘s deception but every note she strikes (music pun a little bit intended) including the concert description is off. (edited) 2w
AllDebooks @Karisa not a fan, either. Rachel hasn't done herself any favours publishing this account. Anna put her in an impossible situation with the debt but she needs to be accountable for her role in the freeloading. 2w
Larkken There is too much filler in this book. I think I feel bad for Rachel? But holy smokes the “poor me… but what a nice concert” sort of stuff… just… 🫣 2w
mcctrish I think all this concert proved was how easily swayed Rachel is/was by anything #knockheroverwithafeather 2w
mollyrotondo This annoyed me!! You are stressed about all this debt you can‘t pay off yet you bought concert tickets. What?! Yes Anna at fault but Rachel is no way experiencing the trauma and loss of money like other scam victims who lose everyone and have no way of getting it back. But Rachel bought concert tickets 😵‍💫 2w
vonnie862 I did not pay too much attention to this chapter. I didn't see what the point was. 2w
julieclair The fact that she would spend money on concert tickets, when she‘s freaking out and losing sleep about how she‘s in debt, is completely beyond me. So immature. 1w

So Anna says WHAT?!
😵‍💫
That was a lot of double talk
Holy smokers
Then she STILLLL yells BYE to her?!
WHAT?!

What a game..

Beth
The next victim!?

AmyG It was all just absurd.?..this “intervention”. I guess Rachel needed validation, needed others to see how crazy Anna is??? 2w
Librarybelle I‘ve never been a part of an intervention, but it really didn‘t feel like an intervention to me…so bizarre! 2w
IndoorDame Why did they try to stage an “intervention” for this in the first place? The way I understand it, the idea of an intervention is you confront someone with some version of we love you, we want to help you with X, but if you‘re not ready to get help we‘re putting you on notice that we‘re not going to enable you anymore. Confronting someone with we need X from you in that context is bound to be a shit show. 🤣😵‍💫 2w

TheBookHippie @IndoorDame so BIZARRE… 2w
vlwelser I was sure that Beth was a normal human but then she comes back with ways to help Anna with money later. Like WTF? 2w
Karisa @AmyG Yes, I got the sense it was more about Rachel wanting people on her side. It felt very middle school “let‘s all get into drama mode” to me. 🙄 The more the book went on, the less sympathetic to the author and her friends I was. 2w
Deblovestoread I agree with everyone. An intervention seemed an odd choice. 2w
DebinHawaii Agree. So weird & so not effective. And the fact they thought it might work because she was Kacy‘s friend & a “real straight shooter.” 🙄 2w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii EYE ROLL for sure!!! 2w
TheBookHippie @Karisa THAT!!! It‘s middle school and I think she got left with no one, not even the boyfriend 😅😜 so much drama. Why aren‘t the people TIRED?! 2w
AmyG @Karisa Exactly! 2w
AllDebooks I found this 'intervention' almost as bizarre as Anna's behaviour tbh. Very juvenile. My impression on finishing this book is it's one whole lot of crazy grey hot mess, not so clear cut as black and white. 2w
Larkken 🤯 I… just… I almost feel bad reading this book, like Rachel convinced me to play the part of Beth in her little drama 2w
mcctrish @AllDebooks @Karisa this was the most bizarre form of intervention ever, like they had a vague idea of what an intervention was and how to plan one - “let‘s ask Siri” 2w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish OMG SIRI 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2w
mcctrish @TheBookHippie it feels like that much effort went into it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
mollyrotondo I agree with everyone. This was not an intervention. This was a bunch of girls in drama mode like @Karisa said. Rachel was looking for a way to get evidence of Anna‘s scam by recording her and Kacy wanted in on the drama. It‘s so teenage girl nonsense. Anna is definitely a scam artist but Rachel makes herself so unsympathetic in this book. 2w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w
5feet.of.fury Beth started off like she was going to help and be a mediator and then really turned up the drama. No one got any answers. 2w

Wow…just wow. Dumpster fire, meet banana pants crazy! Without assessing blame or even guessing at psychotic diagnoses, this account is just one hot mess. There are decisions made that I would not make…I lost any naivety of humanity a really long time ago.

There is a part of me that feels sympathy for the author, but my cold, sarcastic heart isn‘t quite as sympathetic.

What a wild ride, and I am eager for the #SundayBuddyRead discussion!

CaramelLunacy I tried to feel sympathy, but the whole thing felt disingenuous. She didn't get caught up because she was just so good natured, she got caught up being greedy for the VIP life. Totally understandable, but she didn't acknowledge that so I was left largely unmoved. 2w
Librarybelle @CaramelLunacy Really good analysis! 2w

This was an absurd tale! And it's based on a true story! What the?!?!?!

I completely felt sympathy for and frustration towards the author.

I am mostly shocked of Anna's behavior and the fact that she is still allowed to stay in the US. I feel conflicted if I should see the Netflix series since I feel that it will be supporting Anna.

Overall, I give this book 3.5⭐️.

Wow. This book was just 😳🍌😵‍💫🍌🤯🍌🤪
Parts really gave me anxiety and I wanted to shake the author more than once. Ok. A LOT more than once. If this was fiction, I would have bailed thinking it was too ridiculous & the characters were so annoying. But it‘s NOT fiction 😖🤦🏼‍♀️. Looking forward to our #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD discussion.

This month‘s #bookspin and #sundaybuddyread was way out of my comfort zone and aside from trailers for the Netflix show I had no idea what to expect. I hated and loved this and continually found it mind boggling and unbelievable. I can‘t wait for Sunday‘s discussion! The cognitive dissonance of knowing it‘s all true is definitely going to send me down an internet rabbit hole now that I‘m done, and off to watch the screen version.

Low pick for this nonfiction story of Anna Sorokin Delvey written by one of the scammed. I have mixed feelings about labeling the author as a victim or attaching any mental health label to Anna. Looking forward to our final #SundayBuddyRead discussion and watching Inventing Anna on Netflix. This book did send me down a rabbit hole on Google, instagram, etc.

What did you think of Neff?
That was a brief bit 🤷🏻‍♀️

We get to finish this!!! I‘m really interested to hear the end. I‘m excited to watch the Netflix after!

What do you think? This is NONFICTION I keep telling myself. ……

vonnie862 This book is so absurd that I can't stop reading it. And yes, it's nonfiction! Wth! I can't wait to watch the film. 3w
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 it‘s so ABSURD 🤯 3w
vlwelser Neff comes out looking like the smart one here. 3w
See All 21 Comments
IndoorDame @vlwelser she does, which is such a sad commentary on everyone else cause Neff also fronts her like a thousand dollars after hearing she owes Rachel a ton of money 3w
AmyG Ha, yes, Neff is the “smart” one. I am always sort of shocked by people who get sucked in by the con man. Look at our country. It‘s just mind-boggling. 3w
IndoorDame I can‘t wait to read the end. And I totally want to see the Netflix version too. It‘s like a car wreck, I can‘t look away. 3w
Larkken 🫣 it‘s a train wreck. Seems like Neff was kicked bc her tweets might have made it hard for Anna to keep up her lies. I‘m needing to skim. There‘s something about the gleeful descriptions of luxury juxtaposed with the whining that‘s getting to me. If my copy was a real book I‘d have popped to the back to find out more about who Anna really is… but I‘m thinking too that Rachel is so self-absorbed in her own way that she‘ll never tell us. 3w
Librarybelle Totally like a train wreck, @IndoorDame ! I hope we find out more about the real Anna in the last section, but I won‘t hold my breath. As for Neff, I agree with others that she seems the “smart” one in the group. 3w
Karisa Yeah, I‘d like to have heard more from Neff and Carrie. It feels like Rachel is milking the same things over and over like there wasn‘t enough to really fill the pages. So annoyed by Rachel as @Larkken she seems to be bragging and complaining simultaneously (all while cashing in with the tell all book) 3w
Deblovestoread I am so glad to get to finish today after reading pars I and 2 last night. And I am looking forward to the Netflix version. 3w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I cannot wait to watch it! 3w
DebinHawaii You get more about Neff in the series as it explores more of the people she conned. It‘s a trip! I watched it when it came out so I am looking forward to watching it again. 🤗 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I'm so excited to watch it! 3w
mollyrotondo Neff was weird. Not sure why she was noncommittal to the trip. Again it‘s hard to understand what everyone else thought of the situation since we just have Rachel‘s story. I actually like the Netflix show better. Even though it‘s not all accurate it does provide more insight as to what Anna was up to her whole time in NY and not just this Morocco trip. 3w
Sargar114 If there‘s a discussion I may have to watch the series. I was on the fence but I forgot how much I disliked Rachel. 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 oh my word I‘ll need to discuss I‘m sure! That‘s why I scheduled it 😂😂😂😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Neff got lucky! I just can't tell if Neff really was just noncommittal & went to her boyfriend's shoot, or if Rachel is so damn stupid she didn't realize that Neff saw through Anna's bullshit and realized something wasn't right. 2w
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I‘m thinking she didn‘t have a passport. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

The sheer ignorance and unwillingness to see she was taken? Really?! Just astounds me.
All the bail outs Rachel gets offered 😵‍💫
Wow..
What do you make of no one at the police etc caring she was taken?
The amounts of money make me physically ill.
Is what Anna did a crime? Or just a lesson for Rachel?

vonnie862 Anna definitely did a crime and Rachel fell for it. It was a little frustrating how Rachel was not taken seriously when she asked for help but it's also kind of hard to feel sorry for her when she still tried to defend Anna. 3w
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 I wondered if she defended her because otherwise it would say she was taken? That she fell for it 🤷🏻‍♀️that Anna wasn‘t her friend at all? It‘s hard to feel bad for her, I agree. 3w
vlwelser Is it a crime? She paid money that she thought would be reimbursed. But is there ever an actual promise of that? Maybe. And Anna never pays her back. It's the scale of it I think. They need Judge Judy to tell them all they are idiots. 3w
See All 27 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤷🏻‍♀️ it‘s the amount of money maybe? 3w
IndoorDame I wish I was shocked that cops and lawyers don‘t have a clear way to help her. I am actually shocked, even after getting to know Rachel, at how long it takes her to admit this was a con! 3w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame She couldn‘t admit she was taken … 🤷🏻‍♀️😵‍💫😅 3w
AmyG I am not sure it was a crime. How many people have “loaned” others money and not gotten paid back? There was no contract or anything. She said, she said. I, too, am shocked that it took SOOOO long for Rachel to figure out she was conned. @IndoorDame @TheBookHippie If she admitted she was conned…well, what a fool she would have been! Remind you of anything????? (edited) 3w
IndoorDame I don‘t actually know the law, but I‘m betting it was a crime. There were a lot of emails and texts going back and forth with specific amounts and the dates they were supposed to show up and informal things like that are sometimes enforceable. And intent matters in law sometimes too, and she was intentionally tricked out of a huge amount of money 3w
Larkken It‘s such a weird con, and so one-time and overseas that I can see how the us police can‘t help. Why doesn‘t she try something more international and white collar? It‘s kinda funny to me that Anna conned a vacay out of Rachel when she doesn‘t have a place to stay in the us anymore. Like, maybe try to con some help with the hotel room you live in, lady. It‘s beginning to feel itchy that we‘re only getting Rachel‘s story, honestly. 3w
Librarybelle @IndoorDame Agreed! It sadly did not surprise me the police and lawyers were less than helpful. I‘m not sure if it is a crime or not, or what the law would be for it. 3w
Karisa I really feel worse for the hotel person who got fired and the others that must have taken care of Anna and not been compensated. We all know Rachel is going to be fine. She has a big support system. @AmyG I‘m not sure it is a crime either. Rachel gave the credit cards and paid for things. She could have said no. She was along for the trip, ate the food, wore the clothes, in the impressive photos for the socials… 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa I‘m not thinking it‘s a crime. Maybe she can file in civil court for her money -but it would cost more than she lost. Writing the book probs helped .. 3w
Karisa @TheBookHippie Right, it‘s clearly wrong morally but not criminal alone. Owing the hotels she‘s staying in and trying to get money out of banks is what would get her. Not owing friends 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Idk but I couldn‘t believe how long it took Rachel to see what was happening and then she let her stay in her apartment!!!! 3w
Deblovestoread Fraud is a crime and Anna certainly presented herself as having the means to pay for the trip but I think her victims would have been the Moroccan hotel and the fancy tour etc not Rachel. And very little is being said about Rachel‘s company card that was charged which would be a problem for her, I think. 3w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I imagine you can get FIRED for that!!! 3w
DebinHawaii Sometimes I wish pure stupidity was a crime….🙄 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Jails will be full then....... 3w
Bluebird 🤯 i can‘t believe how long Rachel let Anna string her along. Especially when she was strapped for cash. And then letting her stay in her apartment and in her bed! 😳 3w
mollyrotondo If Anna didn‘t get caught conning the banks and hotels no one would have cared about Rachel. It‘s not an easy thing to prove there was a “contract” for Anna to pay for EVERYTHING. Rachel might be able to get Anna‘s portion of the trip but that‘s about it. 3w
Sargar114 I think it‘s the difference between legal and civil. I don‘t think technically what she did was illegal. Like others said she promised to pay back and never did. But Rachel may have means to sue her directly to get that money back. Not a lawyer, just a nerd 3w
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii lol, I work in insurance claims and we often say we insure stupidity. 😂 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't think it was a crime, per se, but all the emails where Anna insinuated she was going to repay may have helped the case. This might be best suited for a TV court sort of settlement instead of lawyers and police. 2w
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 I also work in insurance claims and we also say that all the time 😅 (edited) 2w
5feet.of.fury I def would have called in a fraud charge on the corporate card. I dunno why she didn‘t even try that… I know she called her own bank, but they ran the other card without authorization… ??? 2w
TheBookHippie @5feet.of.fury THE WHOLE situation is 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ . Clearly she is not as smart as she‘s trying to protest herself to be and is way over her head. 2w
5feet.of.fury @TheBookHippie there‘s def some naivety, I was so happy when she staked out Anna‘s hotel because I would have been there the whole time she was back 😂 or ambushed her at Kacy‘s. Something. Anything other than just sending a text. But Anna is gaslighting everyone. 2w

IndoorDame Such ridiculous 🚩🚩🚩🚩! When you‘re in a foreign country with someone who has no access to money (especially someone who is supposed to be responsible for group finances but really any adult) it has to stop being “my friend the heiress is a flake about money, haha” and start being like “wow! I‘m not comfortable being halfway across the world with someone who can‘t remember to bring/figure out how to get their hands on 💵!” 3w
AmyG @vlwesler YES. It‘s all a con. For Anna….like a game of poker. Win one hand at a time. One con at a time then on to the next. And it usuallyworked out for Anna. And YES to @IndoorDame all the DAMN RED FLAGS. Which is why I say Rachel is a fool. I blame her way more than Anna for not seeing what was right in front of her. 3w
Librarybelle I hate to say this and sound very judgmental, but Rachel fell right into it and got a bit of what she deserved. You don‘t go to a foreign country and then realize her “friend” isn‘t really going to pay. It‘s so maddening and bizarre. I hope this book is cathartic for Rachel, because there would be no way I‘d write a book about the time I was conned by a supposed friend and spent so much money for her to party in Morocco. 3w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle I‘m thinking she wants us to feel sorry for her..🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼exactly!!! 3w
mcctrish @Librarybelle why the hell didn‘t Rachel just check out and go to a hotel she could afford ?! Part of me wonders if she just couldn‘t believe it 3w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish she wanted to be fancy 🤷🏻‍♀️ it allllll astounds me! 3w
Karisa @Librarybelle It feels like the book and Netflix deal was another way for Rachel and Anna to get more attention/💰 3w
Karisa It did feel like Anna had zero money. Just trying to see how much she could get out of everyone around her. I still keep wondering about her family—where are they? What are they like? 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librarybelle I agree! I wonder how much she‘s made off this book?! (edited) 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa ah the Netflix is NOT HER… FYI this book however yes. 3w
Karisa @TheBookHippie Oh! I thought the Netflix was based on the book. Who‘s cashing in on the Netflix then??? 🤔 Trying so hard to avoid any spoilers by looking that one up 😂 3w
Deblovestoread @TheBookHippie if she wanted us to feel sorry for her she should have written a different book…this one just has me shaking my head at how dumb you must be to let this go on and on and on…. 3w
Deblovestoread @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I won‘t post the amount here in case it‘s a spoiler but Rachel‘s Wikipedia page lists her earnings from the whole debacle. At the end of my reading last night I went down a bit of a rabbit hole. 3w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread right?! I do not feel bad for her 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
DebinHawaii I would never have made through the previous 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩to go on any trip with Anna, but the point she had to book & pay for the tickets, it would have been “trip over!” I read Rachel tried to sue for how she was portrayed in the Netflix series which was based on a New York Magazine article & not on her book. In my opinion, she is coming off worse in the book! 😉 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I read she sued NETLIX ......I cannot wait to read and see why!! 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii THERE is NO way after all the shenanigans I would go OUT OF THE COUNTRY with her. Good grief. 3w
Bluebird How dumb can one person be! She sued Netflix? Then I can‘t wait to see movie. Could it really portray Rachel much worse than how she is portraying herself in the book? 3w
mollyrotondo That‘s why I don‘t feel bad for Rachel. The flight wasn‘t even booked; Rachel booked the flight. If this girl was being so “flaky” about booking I would have just assumed the trip isn‘t happening and stopped worrying about it. But Rachel wanted to go so Rachel bought the tickets. That was on her. Rachel ate at fancy restaurants and enjoyed the hotel and went all over Morocco. It was her trip too. So it was a good con because Anna didn‘t just steal 3w
TheBookHippie @Bluebird I cannot wait to see it!!! 3w
Sargar114 It feels like Rachel has no idea what it‘s like to live in the real world. Otherwise she would have made more practical decisions. I mean the other people on the trip just left on their regularly scheduled flights. She was the mark and somewhat willing. 3w
Read4life @Bluebird I agree! She has painted herself as clueless and wanting attention at all costs. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Flaky or not, if my friend hasn't booked the flight a week out, I'm not going. This isn't a trip to Sacramento for a funeral. Your friend Anna, The International Heiress of Mystery, absolutely knows better than to check her bag with her money in it. How did she even get through international security and customs & all that jazz without her wallet?! This entire situation sounds worse than the Anna actress's Netflix movie accent. 2w

The dynamic of the friendship
Abusive ? Controlling? Weird?
Rachel should gain a voice ?
It‘s a war between a narcissist and a sociopath ?
So so so fascinating …

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
So many before the trip I just cannot… thoughts?

vonnie862 Sadly to say but it's almost as if they were perfect for each other. It was an abusive and controlling relationship that Rachel appeared more than ok to keep going as long as she was part of the "it" crowd. However, I'm glad Rachel decided to get a lawyer. 3w
vlwelser I don't understand how she got into this situation. Still. I always use the if I can't pay my own way I shouldn't go. Like yes stay for free in someone else's expensive house (or sailboat) but not a hotel. 3w
See All 22 Comments
IndoorDame It really is a war between a narcissist and a sociopath! That‘s such a perfect insight! Two unpleasant charismatic women who share a lack of empathy, but with opposite motivations for their actions. No wonder it all went to hell. 3w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame it‘s the only thing that makes sense to me🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
AmyG I don‘t feel that Rachel is a narcissist. And I think naive lets her off easy. And I think she loved being in the thick of this life with Anna…being in the “in” crowd. BUT I don‘t understand what need was filled that led Rachel to be SO obviously bamboozled by Anna. Anna is definitely a sociopath….and she had Rachel pegged. She is a predator who knows who to target. 3w
Larkken Red flags for both women. I mean, rachel thinks she‘s Anna‘s friend but neither tell each other anything about their lives? 3w
Librarybelle Such a good point, @Larkken ! I would not want to be a friend to either of them. In Rachel‘s case, I feel like she‘s making so many excuses as to why she fell for this. And yet…she keeps in touch with Anna! Anna has issues, and I‘m not about to diagnose those, but she is smart and cunning. Rachel‘s explanation to keep the channels open so Anna doesn‘t flee the country is beyond weird. Sorry. Hard pass on both. 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Red flags everywhere!! 3w
TheBookHippie @Larkken 👏🏼👏🏼🤦🏻‍♀️👏🏼🤦🏻‍♀️👏🏼👏🏼 3w
mcctrish I agree with you @AmyG my mother in law is a narcissist and Rachel is not one. She is obviously naive and uncomfortable with confrontation/conflict and I wonder if she wasn‘t lonely. Her job does sound quite over the top with all the people she intersected/interacted with and her dad running for congress ? She obviously thought she had a handle on living in a faster lane but nope she‘s not a player 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG I‘m perplexed as well. 3w
Karisa @Larkken 🤔 Very good point! Their definition of friendship is more like “what can I get from this person” than just getting to know each other. Is that a generational thing? A big city thing? Just these two very unpleasant people thing? 3w
Deblovestoread Rachel‘s job gives her a whiff of the high life and Anna seems to give her entry into it in her personal life so Rachel is using her in a way. This friendship is definitely superficial. 3w
DebinHawaii Both badly want to be in the inner circle & go about it in different ways. I do think Anna is a sociopath & was abusive in her (fake) friendships with Rachel & others & I think Rachel has approval addiction & needs constant validation. She needs people to think she‘s the “good girl.” 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii IT is ALLL a hot mess. OH MY head....... 3w
mollyrotondo I think Rachel is like typical from my age group 🙄 she‘ll take whatever is free and whatever will put her in high social circles. I can see people I know doing the same thing without thinking about consequences or questioning where Anna‘s money is coming from. It‘s super annoying. It‘s not friendship. It‘s just how someone else can benefit you. 3w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo It‘s outrageous and ridiculous -very very shallow…. 3w
Sargar114 How funny, I mentioned the red flags in the last answer. Anna is a con and stumbled on a good mark. I agree with @AmyG not necessarily a narcissist but just wanting to belong so badly that she ignored all the red flags. 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 so many red flags 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick There were a few times early in their friendship when it seemed like Rachel couldn't really say no to Anna. Even for causal hangouts. That's a huge problem & didn't seem to occur to Rachel. Anna always seemed available until she needed to dodge Rachel's confronting her about the Morocco arrangements or the repayment. I wonder if Rachel was getting minor perks working at VF and that Anna's early generosity seemed par for the course. 2w
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick oh that‘s a thought. A weird sort of privilege … 2w

Rachel is, um ….well what do you think ? This is her book she is the narrator….of her own story. Narcissist? Or what? Naive, privileged -be popular at whatever cost??? I‘m at a loss here …

vonnie862 Rachel is definitely naive and privileged. I kept shaking my head at her as she kept texting Anna and falling for the same lies. 3w
vlwelser I still don't understand her at all. Is she really this idiotic or is it just for the book? 3w

IndoorDame I can‘t figure Rachel out and at this point I‘ve lost all patience with her. I keep wondering how she‘s hoping to be perceived since she‘s the narrator, and if I‘d actually be viewing her that way if I were closer to her age and social group 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
AmyG Rachel is a goddamn fool. I don‘t know how many times I thought….what an idiot. I would have stangled my kid for being such a fool. THERE. I got it off my chest. 🤣 3w
TheBookHippie @AmyG 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 3w
Larkken @vlwelser 💯 I kinda like what the 1st lawyer said to her even if it wasn‘t professional or kind. 3w
Larkken Naive, privileged, secretive. And a bit conniving herself… the book is beginning to feel like her court defense all very produced. Who prints a binder with texts as evidence?! 3w
Librarybelle Like others said, Rachel seems to be very naive and privileged. She really plays up on her wholesome, help everyone background as an almost defense (in my mind) to the way she was played. Why let something like this go on for months?!?! I‘m sorry - I‘d be getting the law involved way before, friendship or no friendship. Is it wrong that I have absolutely no sympathy for Rachel at this point??? I‘m just here for the dumpster fire! (edited) 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @AmyG yes!! I just want to shake her!!!!she has absolutely no boundaries! 3w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle I have more respect for Anna at this point 😂😵‍💫😳🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ she‘s at least who she is 😂😂😂🤣 I‘m reading for the train wreck. 3w
mcctrish I‘m just think Rachel is lucky to have the option to write and sell a book. Anyone else would have to declare bankruptcy and eat the pain 3w
AmyG @mcctrish EXACTLY 3w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 💯💯💯💯💯 3w
Karisa It‘s weird but Rachel annoys me even more than Anna at this point. Rachel plays the I‘m so helpless role but has a high profile job, dad running for Congress, vacationing in France is normal life🤮. She also has so many friends and connections. Not helpless victim. Privileged is right! 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa SAME SAME !!! 3w
Deblovestoread @AmyG 🙌🏼. OMG how dumb can you be!?! @Librarybelle Here for the dumpster fire as well 😂 3w
DebinHawaii She‘s an idiot. I found her whiny & annoying in the Netflix series & hoped it was just the actress (she annoyed me as Quinn on Scandal too!) but I find she is even worse in her book. She tries to justify how she could be that naive with every page but it doesn‘t work. 🙄 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I CANNOT WAIT TO WATCH!!!

She is very annoying to me on the page.
3w
mollyrotondo @Karisa yes! Rachel annoys me way more than Anna. She is so self absorbed. She is a user. She went on a luxurious vacation expecting someone she barely knows to pay. If you go on an expensive trip you should have the means to pay your own way regardless of someone else saying they will pay. She also sounded so dumb complaining about when Anna and the guy chased her around until she went in the pool. Okay it was prob annoying but that story was 🙄 3w
mollyrotondo Rachel is also a huge name dropped. She has mentioned Annie Leibovitz how many times? 🙄 and always saying how she has set up lunches and photo shoots for [namedrop famous person] so much. She wants to be famous just as much as Anna. I can‘t stand Rachel. I don‘t feel sorry for her. 3w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo the name dropping is straight up “look how important I AM” She reminds me of what ppl call “new money” 😂😂😂😂 she grates on me! 3w
Sargar114 I agree with everyone. Rachel is not very likeable. I feel bad that she got conned, but it‘s hard reading her perspective and not having any accountability. I can see getting caught up in the circumstances of a new friendship treating you lavishly and hindsight is 20-20, BUT there were a bunch of blatant red flags that were ignored even after mentioning they were noticed. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I try to think that this book is to show "hey, it could happen to anyone" or "when you look at the world with rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags." Also a way to recoup money. But for someone who felt that she couldn't trust her BOYFRIEND to share this with him, or others, until a month later, that's seems like a plot device to cover your dumb ass. You can't really have this prestigious job at VF and be this stupid. 2w
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick RIGHT?! How does that compute?! It‘s so very odd. 2w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick At least Anna is continuing with her ruse and not floundering visibly. I almost respect her level of commitment to the con. If she was conning millionaires and famous brands for things (like award show gift bag stuff), I would actually think this is impressive. But it's kind of shitty to take down this naive friend who may come from an upper middle class family but is not exactly rolling in the dough. 2w
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Anna is more in a weird type of survival mode. It‘s really strange she sticks to her narrative with no falters… 2w

ESTA Visa

https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-1072?language=en_US#:~....

Why didn‘t Anna get a Visa or anything permanent to live in the USA?

What the heck is her name ?

vonnie862 It's not always easy to get a permanent Visa. There's a lot of paperwork and background check that can take years. That's why many people overstay their short visas because it's easier than trying to get permanency. 3w
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 I wondered about that. I know for citizenship it‘s decades. Refugees it‘s a couple of years- but generally that‘s a few years when they aren‘t here and then come when it‘s a year left. Just in my experiences I should say. It‘s all a hot mess. VISA I‘m not familiar with IRL. 3w
vlwelser She probably isn't legit. It is hard to get these. I think you have to have a compelling reason. Or be a student. Like forever. 3w
See All 19 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m thinking that‘s true. 3w
IndoorDame I was assuming the identity she‘s using could stand up to this type of short term entry visa but not a residency visa. Also the dynamics of leaving the country regularly are working for her con. 3w
AmyG I agree with @vlwelser that she isn‘t legit. She also has no patience to go through this. She also is arrogant enough to think she probably doesn‘t need it….smart enough to “bypass” things. (edited) 3w
Larkken I‘m thinking she‘s probably from Kansas. 3w
Librarybelle Totally agree with @vlwelser and @AmyG . I bet she‘s not German! 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick She doesn't actually do anything other than trying to con, so without an actual job or school, it's hard to get the visa. But, she's probably got a fake German passport or something and is from the German Village in Columbus, OH, or some shit. Wherever she goes, it adds to the illusion that she's an international heiress of mystery. 3w
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 3w
mcctrish Wouldn‘t it be easier to con people in Europe if you were European, slipping in and out of countries ? She must be from some backwoods midwestern place or Florida ( googling strange euro accents ) 3w
Karisa Maybe she sees Americans as more gullible and a way to have access to fame/riches? Doesn‘t she speak multiple languages or at least German? I feel like she doesn‘t have a super longterm plan. I get the feeling she just wants to be famous for being famous like a Cardashian. I guess it‘s kind of worked🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa she speaks multiple languages yes. I‘m thinking it all worked out for her 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😳😅🤯 3w
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yeah, multiple languages might be the biggest evidence we have that Anna is actually European 3w
Deblovestoread She had to have access to some money to stay in motels and fine dining etc. I wonder where that came from. And with any kind of visa don‘t you have to show you can support yourself while here? An American imposter makes sense. 3w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread depends. Are you traveling? Are you trying to stay? Do they really keep track? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
DebinHawaii Yes, I think the permanent visa would have been more difficult with her identity not being legit & not having a job, school or other reason to hang it on. 3w
mollyrotondo I agree with everyone. Way more difficult to get a longer Visa when you have no job and are not a student and you don‘t have family here to vouch for you. 3w

So the Trip and Anna‘s ploy in the beginning of making a movie, an ad… photo shoot- what?!
Interesting?
Why? Why this trip?
Why go to Morocco ?

vonnie862 Anna was smart. She knew Rachel worked in photography, so it made sense why Anna said she wanted to make a movie and have a photo shoot. It was a perfect ploy. And Morocco? Why not? It's exotic and she probably wanted to go there. 3w
TheBookHippie @vonnie862 😂 I cannot think this way 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 but yes that‘s all perfectly right. 3w
vlwelser This entire thing makes no sense. If her intention was to have a great vacation and make everyone else pay for it, it seems like she should have gotten better and more people involved. Not like a poor photographer and a fitness instructor. 3w
See All 35 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser it‘s weird. It‘s all so so weird. 3w
IndoorDame Morocco does seem like a fun destination. And it did have the added benefit of making this all way harder to prosecute which I guess she could have known? But the whole scheme seems baffling. Rachel doesn‘t have nearly enough money to be the mark I‘d expect her to go after. And so far we haven‘t seen anyone actually give her money, just float her lavish lifestyle which is such an odd setup for a con. Where does the cash she does have ac come from? 3w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
AmyG I think she wanted a vacation, agree with you all. I also think she is so beyond self-centered to have herself filmed…make it all about her. (edited) 3w
Larkken ??? I mean Morocco does seem nice but I‘m just confused 3w
Librarybelle Maybe she‘s running out of countries to do her con? As @IndoorDame says, Rachel does not have the money to make a great mark, but I think Anna appreciated Rachel‘s connections. Anna also surrounded herself with very sympathetic people, so maybe conning a little from everyone was her m.o. 3w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm sure Anna wanted a vacation in Morocco & a fancy travelogue as a souvenir. I wonder if she had another con set up that fell through. If she could keep shuffling money around, would anyone know sure wasn't truly an heiress? By the sound of it, most people didn't trust her or thought she was off, so perhaps she couldn't get anyone wealthy to actually foot the bill. Rachel didn't think it's weird that plans were last minute? Anna flying economy? 3w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ she is beyond awful!! I‘ve watched some of her videos online and all I can do is shake my head. I think she is bipolar with grandiose ideations. 3w
mcctrish My thoughts on morocco were they‘d be in and out before bills couldn‘t be payed and Anna plays whoever she can BUT I‘d want to avoid countries that had death penalties or unscrupulous security but then again those would put the fear into people to offer up payment just like Rachel did 3w
Karisa I think Anna is all about appearance and photos from Morocco would bolster her social credibility. See and be seen. Fake it to make it. She might also see it as a place to find more rich prey—showing up with a professional photog and well connected friend (working with celebrities and father running for Congress). It gives Anna more opportunities for upward growth. I think she sees herself as a business 3w
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Right?! So dangerous. 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa That makes the most sense. 3w
Deblovestoread I wonder if she gave any thought to what would happen if Rachel didn‘t have the means to pay for it. It sounds like Rachel didn‘t share much in personal details so it seems pretty ballsy to assume she would have the means to pay for these exorbitant expenses. And Morocco seems like a place you might not want to risk jail time in. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread which begets the question who is Anna? Why isn‘t she afraid? Who is her family ? Why is none of this asked?! To her face, not so and so said … 😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Karisa @TheBookHippie Exactly! 🤣😵‍💫 3w
DebinHawaii I agree with @Karisa that it was all about the social media & pictures for Morocco. An exotic location that photographs well. I‘m not even sure she planned on Rachel paying for the hotel until they were there & got “caught” by the hotel. She seems into pushing limits & the thrill of the con & just assumes it will work out for her in the end & it did with Rachel stepping forward. 3w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii She has WAY more nerve than I do. PHEW. 3w
Karisa @DebinHawaii I agree! Not much prethought going into Anna‘s scans. Just seeing what she can get away with 3w
TheBookHippie @Karisa right?! No rhyme or reason! 3w
mollyrotondo So what makes this book frustrating for me is that we are getting only this story about Anna and only from one perspective, Rachel. It‘s hard to understand what happened in Morocco without understanding exactly how Anna was pulling off any of the things she was doing. I hope the end of the book explains the con Anna was running. This place in Morocco was very popular with celebrities at the time like Kim Kardashian. @Karisa agree she is a business 3w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it‘s a woe is me look at me book. We‘re getting NO REAL STORY! 3w
Sargar114 Anna saw Rachel‘s connections and her vanity fair credit card and seemingly didn‘t care who paid the bill or the fallout from it. 3w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 ZERO cares. She got what she wanted, needed so 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Read4life I‘m a little surprised that a book from Rachel‘s perspective really shows her in such a poor light. Like you said, @TheBookHippie , no real story. Rachel just comes off looking oblivious. So clueless. 3w
TheBookHippie @Read4life I keep asking myself she did write this yes?! 😵‍💫 3w
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie exactly. There is way less story here than I thought there would be. It‘s a total woe is me book to make Rachel money. It‘s not trying to explain what happened with Anna overall or even be that much of a cautionary tale. It‘s just Rachel blabbing and telling us not much of anything worthwhile. 3w
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo It‘s very odd there is truly no story. None. 3w
5feet.of.fury Honestly baffled on how Rachel had money for the NORMAL things that Anna left her to pay (clothes, dinners, plane etc) she says in this section she makes less than 70k… in NYC… that‘s not a lot for there… if someone asked me to buy $1300 worth of clothes… no 🤑I absolutely would not be doing that, multiple $250 dinners… no. 2w
TheBookHippie @5feet.of.fury It baffles me too. 2w

IndoorDame Okaaay, so I do desperately want to swim in that tiled pool that popped up when I clicked on “la riad” but everything else on this site freaks me out, even looking at pictures of it makes me wonder if the concierge is going to pop up and kick me out for looking too gauche or charge me a million bucks for sitting on an antique chair 3w

On to Part II ch 6-12

This is straight up bananas to me and to be honest I‘m more curious about Anna‘s story and also this is all just fascinating to me because it‘s a real story! 🤯 thoughts ??????

AllDebooks I was gripped and couldn't stop listening. I did feel concern that Rachel was able to accept such an expensive holiday from someone she didn't know that well. I tried hard not to be too judgy. Tbh, I found Anna's background intriguing. What's her story? 4w
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks I‘m not sure we will find out but Anna fascinates me. 4w
Librarybelle It is stranger than fiction! I‘ll be interested to see Anna‘s story come out. 4w
See All 34 Comments
AllDebooks @TheBookHippie don't google her until you've finished the book 😅 4w
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks just for pics I read nothing 😂 4w
IndoorDame @AllDebooks I did find it hard not to be judgy when I realized she‘d paid for the holiday tickets initially with the promise of reimbursement, other things were sketchy but that totally stretched credulity for me, but maybe I‘m just more cynical than most? 4w
IndoorDame I‘m hooked! It‘s crazy that this is all real! 4w
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I had the exact thoughts! 4w
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This is bonkers! That Anna concocted this long con, but also that Rachel was so naive and willing to go along with her. I guess I just don't trust people that much to find myself in this situation. 4w
vonnie862 It's a good book so far though it sucks that it's a real story. 4w
vlwelser I can't figure out if the other friends saw through her or if Anna ditched them because Rachel was a better partner in crime. Also what if Rachel knew all along and was in on it and wrote this book from the perspective of a naive dupe? 4w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser OH NOW THAT IS A THOUGHT! 👀 4w
vlwelser I got mystery novel brain. 4w
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘ve got I don‘t trust any of this at face value problem 😂 4w
vlwelser It's like Anna seems more believable than Rachel. I feel like there's something else going on. 4w
kspenmoll @vlwelser Very very interesting thought & question? Originally I wanted to throw this book away but after this discussion I am more invested in reading on. 4w
AmyG This entire story is bananas. Rachel is just a fool. I blame her a great deal for not seeing what was right in front of her all along. 4w
IndoorDame @vlwelser oooh, I would almost like her better if that were the case! But my gut says Anna wouldn‘t take the fall for this alone if she had a real accomplice… 4w
Karisa @vlwelser oooh, I hadn‘t thought of that. Rachel did get even more attention and some 💰 from the book and Netflix deal… 🤔 4w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @kspenmoll haha! Me too!! 😂 4w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks What is her obsession in making everyone listen to her music?? Just another control thing?? 4w
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks IT IS SO WEIRD?! Is it so they don‘t confront her?! 4w
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I‘m just flabbergasted astounded and fascinated 😂😂😂 4w
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 4w
julieclair This book has me hooked. I can‘t wait… and also I dread… to see what happens next! 4w
DebinHawaii From watching the Netflix series, Rachel annoyed me & the book isn‘t helping (so far) in that aspect. I feel like it‘s her justification of why she fell for Anna‘s lies & over dramatized to make herself look better. The using her company credit card thing is what always gets me most about her, so I can‘t wait to read more about that! It is truly 🍌👖 4w
Sargar114 Happy to be back at the discussion. I‘ve read the last two but not fast enough to keep up with the discussion. I don‘t know if I‘ll watch the show only because Rachel doesn‘t support it. While I don‘t like her all the much, she is still a victim and don‘t really want to support putting Anna in a more glamorous light. 4w
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I agree! I don‘t like Rachel. Anna is a criminal for sure. But Rachel is not some poor victim. She‘s a user and hung with Anna because of who Anna claimed to be. If Anna wasn‘t putting on this con and Rachel met her there‘s no way Rachel would have been friends with her. Cry me a river that you didn‘t get an all expenses paid trip off of your “friend‘s” dime. I don‘t like Rachel or Anna. 4w
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 so so happy to see you!!! This whole thing just astounds me! This is real people. Very otherworldly …Anna definitely a grifter… and why do people love her? And what made her this way?! 4w
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii RIGHT?! You did what?! The company credit card thing freaked me out. 4w
Sargar114 @DebinHawaii best use of emojis!!!! 4w
5feet.of.fury @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks the music thing was so weird & funny to me, and that it was so basic (Eminem singles from 10 years ago or something). I think you‘re right it‘s for control tho, convince people she‘s important because who else would have the audacity. 2w

Was Anna in Germany ?
Didn‘t that seem strange?

So Rachel sees the shift of power change, but money is the power? Because Anna pays she says?
Um….
thoughts ?!

Librarybelle I don‘t think she was in Germany…is she really German??? As for the shift in power, I was a little unclear by that. I felt Anna was in control from the very first meeting. Unless, Rachel meant that this was the moment that Anna no longer paid for “token” items and made Rachel pay for everything. I just think it‘s all about the catch. Rachel was firmly in Anna‘s control. Let the games begin. 4w
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle Elaborate game!!! 4w
IndoorDame I get why the power dynamic may have shifted at this point, and why it would have been useful for the con to include this step up in Anna paying, but I don‘t get what Rachel is getting out of the relationship at this point? 4w
See All 17 Comments
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I suspect Anna was in the States, somewhere very unsexy, abs definitely not overseas. Did she have to disappear to earn more money to continue the ruse? I think Rachel was getting comraderie, but also benefiting from the bold assertions of Anna, the restaurants, the skin treatments, the trainer, etc. Again, the movie trailer voice seems so HORRIBLY FAKE, I hate it. Did she really sound like that? Like Staten Island meets Eastern European. 4w
vonnie862 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I thought the same thing!! 4w
vlwelser She could have been anywhere. And who knows what her visa issues were if they even were a thing. Maybe she had to go back to Russia to get better fake papers or something. 4w
kspenmoll I did not believe for one minute that she was in Germany or had the parents in the relationship she said she had that was all about money. I think she was still in the states or maybe did go somewhere to solve his problem if that was the truth. I am sure she is kind other people and earns money that way elsewhere. 4w
AmyG I just figured Anna was somewhere eiher living the big life on someone else‘s dime or whatever she did to keep the con going. Everything about her is a lie. 4w
Karisa I think with some of her other attachments like the tech guy, it is possible she was in Germany. She might even have family there that funded a visit home. I wonder what her family is like… It‘s impossible to know with her! 4w
Karisa @IndoorDame I feel like Rachel just feels important being in Anna‘s circle. Maybe it‘s what drew her to her job too. So many of my middleschool students see a lot of value in “followers” online and views. Meeting some deep need to be seen🤷🏻‍♀️ 4w
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @AmyG that‘s what I was thinking 🤔 4w
julieclair I don‘t believe she was in Germany. And seeking Rachel - and only Rachel - out the instant she supposedly came back was such a huge red flag. 4w
DebinHawaii If I remember correctly, she was born Russian & working class & her family moved to Germany in her teens, so she could have been back in Germany-just not living the life she said she was. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or, as others have said, maybe somewhere else conning others before coming back to NYC. 4w
Sargar114 Anna‘s backstory makes no sense, but likely intentional so that people don‘t try and dig too much. 4w
mollyrotondo That still stumps me. I don‘t know if she really went back to Germany during that time. I wouldn‘t be surprised if she did but you‘d think she wouldn‘t want to be out of the limelight. So I don‘t know. She‘s such a liar that it‘s hard to know everything 4w
Bluebird We only see Rachel‘s perspective. Anna could have been anywhere, doing anything. I don‘t believe much of what she says so highly doubt her story of needing to leave the US because of her Visa 4w
TheBookHippie @Bluebird I agree. Who knows where she was?! 4w
