My Friend Anna
My Friend Anna: The True Story of a Fake Heiress | Rachel DeLoache Williams
Sex and the City meets Catch Me if You Can in the astonishing true story of Anna Delvey, a young con artist posing as a German heiress in New York Cityas told by the former Vanity Fair photo editor who got seduced by her friendship and then scammed out of more than $62,000. Vanity Fair photo editor Rachel DeLoache Williamss new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generouspicking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Annas credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn. Anna asked Rachel to begin fronting costsfirst for flights, then meals and shopping, and, finally, for their $7,500-per-night private villa. Before Rachel knew it, more than $62,000 had been charged to her credit cards. Anna swore she would reimburse Rachel the moment they returned to New York. Back in Manhattan, the repayment never materialized, and a shocking pattern of deception emerged. Rachel learned that Anna had left a trail of deceitand unpaid billswherever shed been. Mortified, Rachel contacted the district attorney, and in a stunning turn of events, found herself helping to bring down one of the citys most notorious con artists. With breathless pacing and in-depth reporting from the person who experienced it firsthand, My Friend Anna is an unforgettable true story of money, power, greed, and female friendship.

Rachel DeLoache Williams's account of her "friendship" with Anna Delvey is horrific and all too believable. Williams begins with a disastrous trip to Morocco which results in tens of thousands of dollars being placed on her own credit card as a favor to heiress Delvey, whose own card is apparently not working because of a mishap with paperwork. From there, Williams flashes back to narrate the history of her relationship with Anna, ⬇️

UnabridgedPod a charismatic and caring young woman whose eccentricities make her incredibly appealing. From there, we see the gradual disintegration of Anna's story and of Williams's ability to convince herself that Anna is really her friend. Fascinating book and great on audio (I listened via Scribd)--I couldn't stop listening to the ways that Delvey perpetrated her con or convinced a series of intelligent people to fall for her stories. 5d

Having now read this, I think that maybe an article was the ideal length. The more I read - about Rachel as well as Anna - the more they both annoyed me in their various ways. Hey ho.

Rachel Williams befriended a woman named Anna who presented herself as a wealthy German heiress. Not long thereafter, Rachel found herself betrayed and defrauded by her “friend.” This is a bit of a lurid melodrama in ways, but it‘s an engaging, fascinating story and I couldn‘t look away. I was definitely in the mood for this.

Cinfhen I almost “bought” this on Audible the other day ~ helpful review 😄you gonna try 1mo
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen I‘m definitely going to try it—it‘s sitting next to me right now. The problem is, I‘m feeling pulled toward Recursion. I‘m such a mood reader. We‘ll see what happens! 1mo
Cinfhen You definitely have to be in the mood for Friday Black! If Recursion is calling I‘d listen ❣️😜 1mo

This is a story narrated by a young lady searching for her place in journalism and befriended a supposed socialite, who turns out to be something else.

Saw Rachel speak at UnionAve Bookstore in #Knoxville today. She was charming, sweet, and sincere. I'm not sure I'll read the book, but it is a fascinating story of being duped by a fake heiress and participating with police to nab her former friend. There are a host of stories from various media about Anna Delvey/Sorokin and her attempts to bilk others. I left with admiration for Rachel and applaud her agency to take control of her own story.

rmaclean4 Hey Knoxville!! I love Avenue Books! I thought she was very charming also. 3mo

Just got to hear the author speak at the local independent bookstore ( Avenue Books) here in Knoxville. I had no idea that Rachel DeLoache Williams was from Knoxville. The book sounds amazing. I don't usually read true crime but I loved what she read.

bromeliad Yay Knoxville! ♥️ I visited there this spring for Big Ears and loved it!! 3mo

This started out promising but quickly went downhill for me. Maybe if I stayed with it I would find out why every single interaction is relevant to the story but I'm just bored.

Megabooks I found her voice annoying. 3mo

This was a great article, a fascinating story to follow, and a terrible book. You‘ll be rooting for the con artist by the end.

Finished this one on the train back to NYC! I‘ve been fascinated by this story since I discovered the Cut article about the situation, and I‘m eager to see what Netflix and HBO come up with.

Thanks so much to @GalleryBooks & goodreads for this copy of My Friend Anna because I loved it!! I couldn‘t stop reading- it‘s crazy that this girl just kept on keeping on with her games, convincing others to take care of all her needs and expenses, conning not only the author, but hotels, businesses, and friends. If you‘re looking for a juicy true con story for the summer, search no more.

I absolutely must read this!

Has anyone else heard of the case of Anna Delvey, the fake German heiress/socialite. I heard about her on NPR awhile ago and prayed that someone would write a book about her story and they did! Please don't judge me, I'm obsessed with con artists and swindlers of all kind. 🤷🏾‍♀️😅

Megabooks I just finished the audiobook last night. Rachel has a curious combination of naïveté and maturity. The story is interesting, but I wouldn‘t recommend going audio because the narrator‘s voice is annoying. 4mo
EchoLogical @Megabooks I will definitely skip the audio! Thanks for the heads up 👍 4mo
Caroline2 This story sounds fascinating! And I can‘t wait for the Netflix series. 😀 4mo

This is one of those Manhattan stories that didn‘t make it to me in the flyover.

The woman above claimed to be a German heiress & bilked the author out of 70k on a lavish trip to Morocco. She also left a string of con victims in NYC, CA & Europe. It‘s an interesting story. The author sold rights to HBO & Anna to Netflix, so expect it on a screen near you.

Overall a mild pick. I wouldn‘t recommend the #audiobook as the author‘s voice is annoying.

Freespirit The voice can make or break an audio book! 4mo
brilliantglow This case is kind of fascinating. I don't know how she ever thought that she wouldn't get caught. 4mo

Megabooks @brilliantglow me either. The author, as she tells the story, seems pretty naive, but she‘s also mature and strong. It‘s an interesting mix. 4mo
janeycanuck Such a crazy story. I heard she hired a stylist for when she was in court. 4mo
Megabooks @janeycanuck She did! The stylist wouldn‘t divulge who paid, but some are saying Netflix! 4mo
L_auren I‘m dying to read this one! (In print) 4mo
Megabooks @L_auren Both Anna and Rachel are fascinating. It, at times, read like a nonfiction suspense book, especially since I had never followed the case. 4mo
janeycanuck @Megabooks that‘s bonkers! But I guess cheaper to hire a stylist and get useable footage than to recreate with a cast & crew? 4mo
Megabooks @janeycanuck From what the author said, she thought it was more to “build buzz” around the case, but who knows. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo
janeycanuck @Megabooks interesting! Not sure the case needs more buzz, though 🤪 4mo

@KathyWheeler I did it! I‘m more sore than I usually am after a 1.6 mile walk, but I‘m happy I‘m back to walking after nearly a week off. Looking forward to your post. You can do it!!

This #audiobook is interesting. I‘ve got to say I find the narrator/author‘s voice a bit annoying. Other than that, she possesses a curious mix of naïveté and maturity. #overdrive
