The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois | Honore Fanonne Jeffers
The award-winning poet and essayist makes her fiction debut with this magisterial epic--an intimate yet sweeping novel with the freshness and forcefulness of Homegoing, The Turner House, and The Water Dancer --that chronicles the journey of one American family from the centuries of the colonial slave trade through the Civil War to our own tumultuous time. "My life had its significance and its only deep significance because it was part of a Problem," W. E. B. Du Bois once wrote. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood these words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans--the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother, the descendant of slaves and tenant farmers--Ailey carries the weight of this Problem on her shoulders. The daughter of an accomplished doctor and a strict schoolteacher, Ailey is raised in the City but spends summers in the small Georgia town of Chicasetta, where her mother's family has lived since their ancestors arrived from Africa in bondage. Growing up, she struggles with this duality, a battle for belonging that shapes her identity. On one side are her exacting parents and her imperious, light-skinned grandmother Nana Claire, to whom skin color is paramount. On the other, Ailey feels the pull of the "deep country" of her mother's land-tending family, whose forebears endured the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow. But how can Ailey live up to everyone's expectations when half of her family rejects the truth of a fraught racial history, while the rest can't ever seem to break away from it? To come to terms with who she is and what she wants, Ailey embarks on a journey through her family's past, uncovering shocking and unexpected tales of generations of ancestors--Black, Indigenous, and white--in the deep South. In doing so Ailey must learn to embrace her full heritage, a legacy of oppression and resistance, bondage and independence, cruelty and resilience that is the story of the Black experience in America itself.

What a wonderful intergenerational, black feminist novel. I picked up this book because it was recommended to me by a colleague and I am so glad I did. Beautifully written, this epic follows the history of a family and the world around them from pre-colonial America to the modern day.

This book is very good but I don‘t think it is great. It‘s not super original although exploring the lives of an intellectual middle class black family was unusual and rewarding. It‘s beautifully written but I thought dragged a bit towards the end. Nonetheless there is so much to admire and enjoy in this novel

An audiobook for me, and I didn‘t like the main reader.

An ambitious work, an ode to black history in Georgia, a child of One Hundred Years of Solitude, with less magic. For all the praise this gets, it‘s a good, but not great book. It has problems. It has a lot of strengths too, my favorite being her undergraduate perspective on a fictional Spelman-like historically black women‘s college the early 1990‘s (my college years).

vivastory I'm intrigued. I just finished watching a Pulitzer predictions video & the content creator named this as their top prediction. 2mo

For 3 days this was the only book I allowed myself to read because I wanted to let myself get wrapped up in this multi-generational family saga.

Jeffers puts a variety of topics in this chunkster for the reader to consider, but the heart of the story revolves around identity and what it means to be black in America.

Heartbreakingly beautiful and definitely worth the read! 💚

jlhammar One of my favorite reads of the year so far. It really was immersive. When I had to take a break to do regular life stuff I found my mind still back in the book, thinking about and worrying about the characters, eager to get back to it. 2mo

If you love epic multigenerational family sagas, this is the book for you. If chunksters make you happy, it‘s the book for you. If you just like a good read, this is the book for you. Loved how it followed a Creek family, a white family, and a black family…and how their interconnectedness is revealed over time. While there‘s a lot of darkness in this one, there‘s also a lot of hope, joy, personal agency, and growth.

TrishB All those things apply! I just need to get to it! 2mo

I could not finish this novel. I was 400 plus pages in and I had to stop. The generation after generation of sex abuse of children was more than I could take. I just could not have those images in my head any for 300 more pages. It is also a coming of age story which is not my favorite story either.

I adored this book. This was a novel set around an extended family between former slave owners and those who were enslaved. It was set jn a former plantation in the south. It followed the families pain in discrimination and their joy. I especially love Ailey was became a historian and studied her families history. It was an incredible read. 5/5

I have been sitting with this trying to come up with words to review this all week. I realized there are none. It is a masterpiece. It weaves generations of stories with poetic writing, and richly drawn characters. I was worried it was too hyped but it deserves everything positive people are saying and more.

I give this book four thumbs up — including my big toes. I love family sagas and this is the best one yet: it chronicles a Black family‘s struggles in the U.S. over every generation starting with the Creek Indians, who sre ancestors to the protagonist. We see these hardships and trumphs from the women‘s points of view, written movingly and elegantly. This book is very long but I felt sad when it ended. A must-read!

This could have easily been a trilogy. There‘s so much in here- family saga, history, relationships, generations- and it kept me interested for about 800 pages. The first 600+ pages are fantastic and are worth it to take on this epic. Great mixing of du Bois and black culture into the story line. I ran out of steam at the end, but that‘s on me- not Jeffers.

Tamra I think I‘d better do this in print rather than audio in that case. 3mo

This colossal, intricately-layered saga spans generations in an African American family rooted in Georgia. Their ancestry is a mix of Indigenous Creek, enslaved black peoples, & colonial white slaveholders. Ailey‘s is the central story—coming of age in the late 20th c—with chapters flipping back to earlier timelines as far back as the 17th c. Major themes: intergenerational trauma; sexual violence against women & children; misogynoir & shadeism.

Lindy Audiobook (30 hours) has three narrators. Adenrele Ojo and Karen Chilton read the main part, one taking the contemporary and the other the historic timelines, while Prentice Onayemi reads excerpts from WEB Du Bois between chapters. 4mo

History through the personal history of the historian. Coming-of-age story for Ailey in late 20th cent: smart, independent, judgmental; interwoven with stories of ancestors back to escaped slave Micco & Creek wife in early 18th cent Georgia. Black girlhood, Black womanhood. Passing, colorism, education, class, trauma, family. Du Bois‘s legacy. Yes, it‘s long, & some of the schoolgirl days might have used some editing, but compelling & direct. 2021

This is a massive book, at 790 pages. Don‘t let the size scare you. This is powerful storytelling and inside, the heart break just won‘t stop coming. There were moments when I had to put it down before going back to it. Honoree tells the pain of the past brutally, as it must be told—and its echoes into the present. Highly recommended; one of the best I‘ve ever read. Guaranteed this book will be banned if it hasn‘t been already. Read it!

This was an incredibly impactful novel that traces the history of an African American family in Georgia from their Native American ancestors, through slavery and sharecropping, up to modern day. Many people will be put off by the length (around 800 pages), but it was worth the time and was very absorbing, if emotionally difficult to read at times.

This is truly what you call masterful storytelling. Jeffers chronicles the many lives of a southern family‘s roots that intertwine with all colors and races reminding us how connected we are. Parts are brutal & heartbreaking proving the evils of one man can poison but not destroy the tree. I do think some parts needed to be edited as this story covers several centuries but still this book felt uniquely personal.👇🏽

Suet624 It‘s well worth the investment of time to read it. 😊 5mo
Cinfhen Agreed @Suet624 it‘s REALLY a chronicle- and I love how all the threads are beginning to weave together 5mo
squirrelbrain Thanks for the heads-up Cindy - stacked for future reference! 5mo
Megabooks Lovely vase and flowers!! 5mo
BarbaraBB Why are you reading such a chunkster?!! 5mo
Cinfhen Thanks @Megabooks it‘s my favorite vase!! 5mo
Cinfhen I think you‘re gonna really like this book @squirrelbrain - it‘s a slow buildup but worth the time investment. I know @BarbaraBB I‘ve been picking up these HUGE books lately… I‘m ok with longer books at the end of the year when I have less books on my shelves. But this one is beginning to feel a little endless. I‘m only on page 378😬 5mo
BarbaraBB That‘s a good feeling, having less books on your shelves and the patience to read big books. I wish I knew that feeling! 5mo
Megabooks I pick up more large books at the end of the year too. I need to read this after Libertie. It‘s 660 pages print/25 hours audio. 5mo
Cinfhen I have that one on my Kindle @Megabooks but I haven‘t been tempted to read it 🙈 (edited) 5mo
Cinfhen I‘m saving LOTS of books for all the new 2022 challenges @BarbaraBB so these longer ones are a good distraction 5mo

We are the earth, the land. The tongue that speaks and trips on the names of the dead as it dares to tell these stories of a woman‘s line. Her people and her dirt, her trees, her water. We knew this woman before she became a woman. We knew her before she was born: we sang to her in her mother‘s womb. We sang then and we sing now.

What a fantastic book! This tome weaves a more modern story, mainly following one character and her family, with a more sweeping history focusing on one particular piece of now Georgia. It somehow manages to write large the reality of white oppression of both indigenous and African people in the US and be an intimate personal story. Do not let the length put you off. I didn‘t want it to end.

I put off reading this because it‘s 800 pages. My mistake; I cannot put this down! It flashes between a modern story of a family with some secrets and historical fiction of the origin of that family (with Creek and enslaved ancestors). Don‘t let the intense family tree scare: both stories are so vivid and gripping and heartbreaking.

Suet624 So true. 6mo

800 pages of pure history. It took Jeffers a decade to write. The multigenerational story of a Black family that weaves back and forth in time. It covers so much historical ground and each character is deliciously detailed and outlined. Each character could have their own book. Despite its length my interest never waned and the many stories within it are captivating. Jeffers deserves all the praise. A family tree is provided in the print version.

ValerieAndBooks I am stacking!! I read the blurb and have to wonder, though, how a doctor and schoolteacher decided to name their daughter after Alvin Ailey. 6mo
Suet624 @ValerieAndBooks Haha. Really good question. One I can‘t answer. Now that the reading of it is a bit in the past, I have to say I wish she had broken the book into smaller novels. I think it‘s an important piece of historical fiction and introduces people to a history they may not be aware of, but it‘s 800 pages! That‘s just too long for a lot of folks. 6mo

The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the Problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois‘s words all too well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😍

I didn‘t fully appreciate how brilliant this book was until the end when all the pieces started to come together. It is a long, detailed account of a family and the ways past abuses keep coming around. It‘s heartbreaking, but hopeful. Fully deserving of the National Book Award longlist.

Tamra I want this book! 7mo
Suet624 Your review has definitely bumped this up my list of books to find at the library. 7mo
