#ozfiction This book has been shortlisted for the Miles Franklin literary award. Set in Tasmania, it follows the life of Ned growing up on an orchard, Limberlost. His mother has died & his two older brothers are away at war. Ned hunts rabbits to make money.
My dad grew up in rural Victoria & earnt pocket money ‘rabbiting‘ as a teenager. As kids my siblings and I went rabbiting with him.
I really enjoyed this beautifully written book.

Tamra This sounds really good - I wish I could access Aussie books more easily. It seems to take awhile to be published in the US. (edited) 10mo
MrsMalaprop @Tamra I love showcasing Australian fiction on Litsy, but hear how tough it is to get hold of books elsewhere in the world, especially now that BD is gone. If you are really keen on a particular book let me know. I can source and send it to you 😊. 10mo
Rissreads This was fabulous! Well deserved to win The Miles Franklin award 👏🏻♥️ 10mo

MrsMalaprop Hasn‘t won yet @Rissreads. Announced 25 July. 10mo
CarolynM One of my book group friends loved this, but she also loved The Rain Heron and that really was not my cup of tea. It‘s an interesting short list for the Miles this year. I loved Cold Enough For Snow and there are a couple of others I want to read. 10mo
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM I haven‘t read any of the others. I believe they are all debut authors. 10mo
Tamra @MrsMalaprop there are so many good ones! I did see this was available via Amazon and I haven‘t tried Blackwells yet. Thank you! 💜 10mo
Rissreads @CarolynM I enjoyed this a lot more than cold enough for snow. This is Arnott‘s first novel without magic realism so maybe you would enjoy this one more? I enjoyed Flames but haven‘t read Rain Herron yet. 9mo

#Ozfiction 🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎
I devoured this book and the story of Ned growing up in Tasmania on an apple orchard. The descriptions of the land, water and animals were divine. This passage really spoke to me as I too sometimes feel like this.
Ned was thirty. When would the natural competence of other men come to him? He knew he had worth. Knew he had qualities that were of value…..But he longed to be more surefooted, for his adult self ⬇️

Rissreads to be more resolved. To be a person who was complete. 10mo
MrsMalaprop 🥰 Loved it too 10mo

5⭐️‘s from me for Limberlost by Robbie Arnott..such beautiful writing…really a simple story of living on an Apple Farm in Tasmania, surrounded by old growth forests and river estuaries. A coming of age story with gentle references to colonial dispossession and environmental degradation.
I‘m sitting by the roof top pool overlooking Brisbane to start my next book…back to work later in the week so I‘m making the most of the last days of holiday😊

CarolynM I‘m hearing lots of praise of Limberlost, but I really disliked The Rain Herron so I‘m torn about whether I want to read it🥴 Small Things is beautiful, but you might find a bit of an atmosphere clash with the lovely weather it looks like you have in Brisbane. 1y
rubyslippersreads @CarolynM I‘m curious because I understand it references one of my favorite books 1y
Freespirit @rubyslippersreads the main characters mother named their apple farm after this book😊 1y
