Ruthiella Poor Agnes. They really are awful children. Though Agnes also often thinks a good whipping might set them straight, which isn‘t in keeping with how many modern parents raise their children. 13mo

AnnR It seems the son gets his temper and bullying ways by example from the father. I don't think “Patience, Firmness, and Perseverance“ is going to be enough to reign in these little terrors otherwise. What on earth do the parents expect Agnes (or any governess) to do, in order to get the spoiled brats to take their studies seriously. 13mo

eeclayton Here we are in 2023, and there are still many parents who let their kids do whatever they want, and then expect teachers in schools to teach them all the stuff they (the parents) have failed to. The difference is that teachers today are trained to deal with kids while Agnes has no idea what she's doing. 13mo

julieclair Poor Agnes! She is trying so hard. These kids are so awful. And especially when kids truly don‘t care what kind of punishment they get, how in the world do you motivate them to comply? 12mo

Loved this book! Read it years ago and I‘m planning to re-read over #ChristmasBreak. The second book is also very good. It‘s called Sorceress and I will post it too.

A young girl escapes the persecution of the people in her small town when her grandmother is accused of being a witch and hung. Her escape brings her to the colonies where she fosters with a childless family and tries to conceal her unusual gifts.
