One of the best books I've ever read. I cannot understand why it wasn't appreciated more when first published, but I'm thankful #NYRB gave it a second life! A melancholy novel about life, work, disappointment, & the love of literature, this novel was so real & incited every range of emotion in me. 5⭐️s! So so sorry for the delay, this will reach its destination in a couple of days! #LMPBC #Round7 #GroupC #WinterGames #TBRRead #TMSkellington

KT1432 Fun fact: John Williams retired to my small hometown in the year I was born, and remained there until his death in '94. Which means I unknowingly lived amongst a world-class author during my childhood, not knowing that some 25-30 years later I would read a book he wrote and fall in love. ♥️ 4y
TheBookHippie One of my favorites ❤️❤️❤️ 4y

TheBookHippie @lele1432 I came across it while researching unknown awesome classic reads a few years ago. What a find. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Thanks for the update!! I'm interested to read this one when it comes my way because it is NOT my usual type of book! 4y
KT1432 @youneverarrived such a shame it wasn't more successful when it was first published. It really is a great read! 4y
KT1432 @Bookwormjillk I hope you like it! 4y
KT1432 @TheAromaofBooks lol I look forward to hearing your thoughts! I loved it, but can see how it might not be for everyone! 4y
KT1432 @TheBookHippie isn't it?? This is exactly what I love about NYRB. Finding overlooked gems like this one! 4y

Bookwormjillk @lele1432 I loved this book so, so much. Thanks for choosing it. It‘s been on my TBR for years and I‘m grateful that I finally had a reason to read it. Definitely one of the best things I‘ve read this year if not ever. I‘ll be thinking about Stoner for a long time. 4y
KT1432 @Bookwormjillk yay!! And you're welcome!! I am typically not very emotional when I read books. But this one pulled at all my heartstrings. I'm still thinking about it. I wish more people knew about this book! 4y

Bittersweet: A Novel | Colleen McCullough

I enjoyed the different lives of the four sisters. It has been a long time since I read the Thorn Birds. Maybe I should read it in 2020.

With this book, I have completed #PopSugar2019 (title with bitter and sweet). I completed Booked2019, ReadHarder2019, and AtoZLitsy2019. I still have 16 to read for AroundtheWorld2019. I won't worry; it has been great fun and I'll read them in 2020.

Audio loan didn't come back until yesterday, which was perfect because I was able to finish this & have it count towards the #WinterGames! Glad I finally read it. Obscene, creepy, & will make you think of Christmas in a different light lol. Filled with kids & adults doing horrific things & showcases a frightening innocence that does not discern evil from fun. Kate Mulgrew's narration really brought this to life. #HolidayRead #TMSkellington 4⭐️s

KT1432 Using the non-movie tie-in cover as my #WinterReadsBingo for Ugly Cover lol. #PopSugarReadingChallenge #PopSugar2019 #Pop19 Read in season it‘s set it (edited) 4y

Missed the post office yesterday before leaving town, so this will be sent to @rachelm first thing in the morning!

Wholly different from what I was expecting, this short novel proved to be an important work in its own right. Its strength was the use of surrealism to convey the truths & nuances of present-day issues on the topic of immigration; bridging cultures & languages. The translator's note was very informative! 4⭐️s #LMPBC #Round7 #GroupI

Carolyn11215 Sounds amazing! Can‘t wait to read it! 4y
KT1432 @Carolyn11215 I hope you enjoy it! It took some getting used to, and as the translator notes at the end, it's non-standard and colloquial. And just a heads up, there are no quotations used. But there came a point when everything "clicked" and I was like, okay, I get what the author's doing with this and the themes he's conveying. Can't wait to hear your thoughts! 4y
rachelm Exciting! I‘ll keep my eyes open for it! 4y

Mehso-so

Well, this was an interesting concept, but not the greatest execution. The MC, Simon, really got on my nerves, I actually wish the book had been written from Kat‘s POV. I don‘t think I will be reading the other books in the series.

It is my FINAL ✔️ for #popsugar2019! 🎉🎉 This fills the #LitRPG prompt. Also #BBRC #TeenAngst : not appropriate for MG (violence)

A pretty insightful history of how the last shipment of slaves landed in the U.S. #TIL when these slaves were freed and denied the option to go back to Africa, they banded together, worked hard and saved their money to be able to purchase land from their previous slave owner, who wouldn't even give them a discount. 4⭐️s #NFNov #PopSugarReadingChallenge #PopSugar2019 #Pop19 #PublishedPosthumously

Salt Slow | Julia Armfield

Loved! 4.25⭐️s! Continuing my mini-reviews of each story below & in comments.

Smack: Armfield's strength at writing gross, yet captivating descriptions with a sense of foreboding is on full display here. A woman going through a divorce barricades herself inside the beach house where a smack of jellyfish continuously invade the shore, bursting open.

Cassandra After: A woman is visited by her dead girlfriend in this sad tale of shame & regret.👇🏽

KT1432 Formerly Feral: Could not be a more accurate title! Grotesque, unsettling, and filled with olfactory details that will make you want to shower immediately, this was a strange tale about an unlikely pair of sisters. (edited) 4y
KT1432 Granite: Slightly depressing. A woman ignores unsolicited opinions from other women and chooses between solitude and love on her own terms. 4y
KT1432 Salt Slow: A pregnant woman gives birth while living out at sea with her boyfriend, surrounded by monsters in some post-apocalyptic altered present. Great example of writing that shows rather than tells. 4y

I think this is what I will read next. It‘s been on my #botm backlist, plus it fills the #twofemaleauthors prompt for #pop19, #anothercountry for #nonfiction2019 and works for #NFNov.

What say you, Littens?

I‘m in a race to finish #popsugar2019 before the #pop20 list comes out. 😂

SheReadsAndWrites I love this photo ❤️ 4y
Lauram I really liked this book. (edited) 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Looks like all great reasons to me! It‘s that time of the year where things have to count for multiple categories 😂 4y

Nothing to See Here | Kevin Wilson

Hilarious! I am kicking myself for not getting this #BOTM pick, but now I'll get it as my bday freebie. I loved the MC, Lillian. Her humor was just what I needed! Bittersweet at times, this quirky novel showcases a wide variety of bad parenting lol, but ends on a hopeful note. I never knew combustible kids could be so fun! If you like quirky humor with a side of absurdity, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The #audio is fantastic! 4.5⭐️s!

Rachel.Rencher I had reservations about this one but now I think I need to grab it! 4y
Lynnsoprano Just read the review of this in the Washington Post this morning. Hi definitely need to read it! 4y

KT1432 @Rachel.Rencher I know what you mean. The description sounded so...out there lol. And I typically don't do magical realism. But I have to hand it to Wilson, his writing made everything seem so normal! I hope you like it! 4y
KT1432 @Lynnsoprano I was so pleasantly surprised! I've never read him before, but I actually have his other one from BOTM and just never got to it. Now I want to bump it up my TBR! 4y
vivastory I've been meaning to read him for years 4y
