Nothing to See Here
Nothing to See Here | Kevin Wilson
Kevin Wilsons best book yeta moving and uproarious novel about a woman who finds meaning in her life when she begins caring for two children with remarkable and disturbing abilities Lillian has only exchanged the occasional letter with her friend Madison since their days as inseparable roommates at an exclusive boarding school, when out of the blue, Madison writes to ask Lillian for help. Her husbands career is about to take a major turn, just as his children from his first marriage are moving in with them; Madison wants Lillian take care of them. But, like most things with Madison, theres a catch. The twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated: flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but its the truth. Thinking of her dead-end life at home, the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each otherand stay coolwhile also staying out of the way of their buttoned-up, politician father. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lilian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need herurgently and fiercely. Couldnt this be the start of the amazing life shed always hoped for? With a white-hot wit and a big, tender heart, Kevin Wilson has written a most unusual story of deep parental love that proves to be his best book yet.

So, the “fire children” are really not the main focus of this book, IMO. To me, it‘s about all of the people and things you actually SEE when you pay attention.
And, it‘s about those who feel forgotten, who say “nothing to see here,” when all they want most in the world is for someone to notice (and cherish) them.
Loved this book ♥️

This was just the escape I needed over a holiday weekend during which I was trying to avoid offensive/insulting comments from family members. The book was cute. Very quick read and I love weird quirky characters.

Amiable Ugh. Navigating family is tricky. I feel your pain. Glad you were able to find an escape! 1w
Gaylagal2 I needed an escape too. A couple family members wanted to talk about guns and drump. I finally had to say ENOUGH!! 😬🙄 HAHAHA And that's why I sometimes hate the holidays but LOVE Litsy and reading...my happy place 🤓❤️ 1w
Valink @Gaylagal2 oh man!! Luckily we avoided politics, but they wanted to counsel me on my finances. No thank you. 1w

November Bookish Bingo: Dramatic Family Dinner ✔
Yes, a great example about the love of a parent but the love felt like end end chapter of Matilda where the best thing they ever did for children they didn't understand was to leave them with someone else. I, honestly, was expecting way more humor and this book didn't deliver that. But it was unique and not a storyline I had read before so there's that. Will have to ponder how I'd ever recommend it.

I loved everything about this book. It's everything: poignant, strange, dark, hilarious, & heart-warming. A story about how three people, unloved and unwanted by their own families, find love and acceptance with each other. Kudos to the author for creating a main character that accurately represents what most people would say and do if placed in her situation: becoming the caretaker of two traumatized kids that spontaneously combust under stress.

Sometimes, when you‘re in a reading slump, it turns out that it isn‘t exactly that you can‘t concentrate on any book.

Sometimes, when the book is good enough, you forget about your vague plans to do laundry and you even forget about all the things that hurt and all the things you‘re stressed about, for long stretches ,and you just read read read and it feels so good when you find that book and oh my gosh this book.

I loved everything about this weird, beautiful, funny novel. A quick and very entertaining read (/listen - I did the audio, and Marin Ireland's narration was a delight) with some insights about friendship, family, and class worked in. I found more than a few moments quite relatable via my experiences as a special needs mom whose kids don‘t literally spontaneously combust but sometimes seem or are treated like they do. 😬

I got plenty of enjoyment from this, at first glance it‘s bonkers with a refreshingly deadpan delivery. Yes, it is about two 10 year-olds that can spontaneously ignite, a bit of an inconvenience but hey, who doesn't have problems ?. In terms of tone, this was in the realm of Moonrise Kingdom slightly puzzling, visually arresting, highly entertaining.
( N.B I love a good cover, and this one might be my favourites from 2019 )

I‘ve been reading reading lots of non-fiction lately; honestly not intentionally although it has worked well with Non-Fiction November. This seemed like a fun choice to get back into fiction books. A bit of book serendipity in that the last fiction book I read was Ann Patchett‘s The Dutch House and this book is dedicated, in part, to Ann Patchett.

Wow, was this a surprise find! I got this in Book of the Month Club, no opinion but that it sounded interesting, and I ended up loving it! Quirky, funny, witty, and heartwarming with just the right bit of sass. Lillian is almost an antihero she is so quietly awesome and unapologetically authentic. I just love this book.

Hilarious! I am kicking myself for not getting this #BOTM pick, but now I'll get it as my bday freebie. I loved the MC, Lillian. Her humor was just what I needed! Bittersweet at times, this quirky novel showcases a wide variety of bad parenting lol, but ends on a hopeful note. I never knew combustible kids could be so fun! If you like quirky humor with a side of absurdity, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The #audio is fantastic! 4.5⭐️s!

I really enjoyed this quick read. It was a good balance of dry humor and a bittersweet kind of sadness. The relationships are all rather odd, but the connection between Lillian and the fire children was sweet. It was one of those books you didn't want to put down because it was so fascinating.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! 💗💗💗💗💗

One of my top 5 in 2019. Kevin Wilson is an auto-read author for me and this one might be his best. I keep typing and then deleting... it‘s hard to put into words what makes this odd little story so powerful. It will make you laugh and cry and feel hope and despair and want to tell everyone you know about what you just read.

Oh. My. Gosh. This was one of my October picks from Book of the Month but I‘m just now getting around to reading it and it is cracking. me. up. My kids came upstairs and looked at me like I was a weirdo (maybe I am) because they could hear me laughing. The way the main character describes the “fire kids” is so funny. Her wit reminds me a lot of myself, maybe that‘s why I find her so hilarious. 😂👏🏻
