Pickpick

Death is omnipresent in the lives of the Billymil family, 3 generations of Aboriginals who live at the end of a settlers town, in the so called Campgrounds. Ancestral spirits watch the family and try to help them.
This is not easy in a place where race relations are fraught, and where rapid social and environmental changes have a lasting impact.
It‘s a sad read but I learned a lot about indigenous traditions and am glad for that.

BarbaraBB Thanks for sending me this beautiful book @CarolynM , I was deeply touched by it. 10mo

I bought this book because of the cover. The book blurb sounded interesting…3 women in 3 different time periods: 1619, 1942 and 2019. Historical fiction and magic. My cuppa tea. But seriously, I probably would have bought it even if it did not intrigue me. Lol!

I read this via audio and loved it. The three different narrators made it easy to follow the 3 different timelines. All were wonderful. #52bookclub2023 #featuringaninheritance

Librarybelle This is on my to read list! 10mo
LaraReads Agree with all of that! I got it in my BOTM, but I also listened to the audio. I loved the narration! 10mo

Why Shoot a Butler? | Georgette Heyer

Another intriguing mystery from Georgette Heyer which has been keeping me entertained on my morning walks. Unfortunately it lacked the humorous element of many if the others I've listened to, and it's a bit over long, but enjoyabke overall. #52BookClub23 #FeaturingAnInheritance

squirrelbrain Intriguing title - what shoot a butler, indeed?! 🤔 12mo
Cinfhen I need to start doing morning walks!! 12mo
Librarybelle I need to read more by Heyer! 12mo
Rissreads And so tell us…….why shoot a butler? 12mo
CarolynM @squirrelbrain @Rissreads 🤣 I‘d be giving the mystery away if I told you that! 12mo

“Perhaps one day… there will be a safer time, when women could walk the Earth, shining bright with power, and yet live.”

I adored this witchy tale about the strength women can possess within when they allow themselves to find it. It weaves 3 stories over 4 centuries, and I loved the way it all came together, especially in the second half of the book.

LeeRHarry Yes! I loved this one! Picked up the US copy whilst I was over there on holiday 😊 it‘s gorgeous! 13mo
LaraReads @LeeRHarry yes! So gorgeous! And it rarely happens that the US covers are better than the UK ones, but this one wins! 13mo
Cinfhen I‘m so put off on witchy tales since reading When women could Fly but this book sounds & looks great!!!! I might have to #BorrowNotBuy (edited) 13mo
Cinfhen LOVE your photo ♥️Hope you‘re feeling better!!! 13mo
squirrelbrain @cinfhen - I read the two books almost at the same time, and this one is NOTHING like The Women Could Fly. (ie it‘s fabulous!) 🤣 13mo

Pickpick

Book 2 in the Cat in the Stacks mystery series that features librarian Charlie Harris and his cat Diesel, who seems to be a bit more intelligent than many of the people Charlie meets! In this book, Charlie is hired to inventory a rare book collection. Murder happens, and the remaining family squabble over the inheritance. Charlie‘s son is also back in town, and there‘s a few bridges to mend. I love that the MC is male and older….⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️…and the police detective is female. I flew through this one and wish I could also hang out with rare books all day… #192025 #2011 14mo
Leftcoastzen I have the first 3 , need to actually read them!😂📚 14mo

I think these need to be palate cleansers or books to get me out of a slump, as I could see various plot points coming after having recently read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Still enjoyed it!

Oh, I loved this @MicheleinPhilly ! ❤️ It would have been on my 2022 favourites list, had a finished it a day earlier.

It left me quite breathless in places, at the injustice Ray faced from the public, the police and even his own family. Even though I kind of guessed the plot line, that didn‘t spoil anything for me.

Book 1 of 2023, and I‘m going for *all*of the challenges!

MicheleinPhilly I‘m so glad you loved it, Helen! 😘 1y
Cortg WooHoo! 1st book done and it sounds like it was a good one! 1y
Ruthiella This was a very plot-propulsive story. And I appreciated that the author confirmed that the micro and macro aggressions were all taken from his real life experiences. 1y
Cinfhen Well played you!!! I enjoyed this book too!!! 1y
Cinfhen I did audio and between chapters the author included his violin concerto - very cool 1y
