I finally finished this one tonight. I just loved his talent and I‘m so sad he‘s gone. This was a great book, his words, his memories…so very good. #weremember @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

What Is the What | Dave Eggers

Another book about The Lost Boys, who came from #Sudan to the US after years of living in refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. This is Achak‘s story, written down by Dave Eggers, who is so good in writing such biographies (Zeitoun, Monk of Mokha). The past and the present, a laugh and a tear: this book has it all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ronnie Spector lived one hell of a life. She chased her dreams, saw those dreams come true, and fought her way through the hell of Phil Spector. Her voice shines through this memoir; it‘s like a good friend telling you their journey.

This jumped onto my TBR after it was mentioned on #MyFavoriteMurder (a recent listen but an old episode)…so sad that we lost Ronnie in January 2022. My first exposure to The Ronettes was the opening credits of Dirty Dancing, with which 5-year-old me was *obsessed* (though clearly so much nuance of the plot flew right over my head). 💜 Rest easy, Ronnie. 💜

It was recently my birthday, for which I received a cute 500-piece jigsaw, "Where's Bowie?", and his latest album, Toy, in a 3-disc box set, which is amazing! It was recorded in 2000, but David's record company didn't want to put it out ? Some of the tracks have seeped out over the years, but it's great to have it as David intended. I doubt the cover is what he conceived, but it takes its cue from the Where Are We Now video, & the mix of ??

Bookwomble ... baby and mature photos of David is appropriate to the album concept of taking his early songs and updating them. (I have no justification for posting this on a book platform 👨🏼‍🎤) 11mo

This was a lot of fun, and Stanley seems to be a similar type of pop fan as I am, though not always of the same opinion. I feel he was a bit too grumpy about the ‘80s and ‘90s and the very British perspective seemed to shortchange the significance of hip hop and country. I also think he‘s wrong about the modern pop era being “over” just because of changes in technology and media (to be fair, this was published in ‘13; things look different in ‘20)

shortsarahrose The fact that I am a 31 year old, female, American, who grew up with the music at the tail end of the book and beyond, certainly shapes my opinion that pop isn‘t over. 2y
