The Dark Is Rising
The Dark Is Rising | Susan Cooper
"WHEN THE DARK COMES RISING, SIX SHALL TURN THEM BACK...." When Will Stanton wakes up on the morning of his birthday, he discovers an unbelievable gift -- he is immortal. Bemused and terrified, he finds he is the last of the Old Ones, magical men and women sworn to protect the world from the source of evil, the Dark. At once Will is plunged into a quest to find six magical Signs to aid the powers of the Light. Six medallions -- iron, bronze, wood, water, fire, and stone -- created and hidden by the Old Ones centuries ago. But the Dark has sent out the Rider: evil cloaked in black, mounted upon a midnight stallion, and on the hunt for this youngest Old One, Will. He must find the six great Signs before the Dark can rise, for an epic battle between good and evil approaches.

Squeaked in one last read in May. I loved this! Do kids still read it? Did they ever? There is action, but the writing is so descriptive, atmospheric, wise, and almost elegiac. It feels mature.
This makes a grand total of 7 books for May. Not a ton but I still have Woolf's diary and Monte Cristo on the go. Onward to June!
(Couldn't resist an Obie photo bomb. 😺)

LeahBergen I‘ve been meaning to read this series for so long. 🙄 1mo

merelybookish @batsy The writing seemed pretty dense and sophisticated. Makes me wonder how it fares with kids today. I (thought I) didn't like fantasy when I was kid, so I missed out on a lot. 1mo

"When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back, three from the circle, three from the track; wood, bronze, iron; water, fire, stone; five will return, and one go alone.”

Here we meet Will, and 11 year old boy who discovers he is the last of the ancient ones. Really good writing from cooper again and much faster paced then the first book, this one is a must read.

I think this would be a good book to read if some of the kids in a class were struggling to find where they belong. It seems to be a book where the main character really finds himself amongst all of the danger.

Tempted by @saresmoore & @Moray_Reads I re-read The Dark is Rising. My timing was a little off; I started on Christmas Day (the book's events begin on Midwinter's Eve). Now I want to go back to Over Sea, Under Stone & make my way through the sequence. This is what I love best—Old England myths & ancient magic, the folklore tied to a place & rooted in the elements, & the uncanny sense of dread. It's also why I love Alan Garner's The Owl Service 💜

kspenmoll That mug is gorgeous! So vibrant! 7mo

batsy @Moray_Reads Only this one for a children's lit class, ages ago. Different to Owl Service; more realist, perhaps, but the incredible sense of place and history is there. Along with that underlying sense of darkness. 7mo

This was a perfect Christmas adventure. The mingled joy and mystery, light and dark, despair and hope were apt & immersive representations of the season. This is a children‘s book, certainly, but that only served to fill me with an eager nostalgia. I enjoyed venturing through time with the inhabitants of the Little English village of Huntercombe. As an aside, I think this story would make for an epic video game.
