pickI used to almost exclusively read true crime, which, makes me sick now, but knowing a gross amount about Ted Bundy added to this story for me. I appreciate the fresh perspective and focusing on the bright young women versus sensationalizing a serial killer. It‘s as close to true crime as I‘m willing to get these days.
so-soI didn‘t like this book as much as everyone else. Maybe because I know little of the Ted Bundy case and how it must have held America in its grip.
Best part to me was the law suit in which Pamela described how much of a myth the man had become despite being a serial killer. The female take on the story is good and original. And welcome.
pickGreat story that gives women victims a voice. The author did a great job including some of the disturbing facts of the Bundy trial and things that were spoken about him instead of his victims. The story is fiction but based off of Bundy murdering two sorority sisters. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
pickThis is a work of fiction inspired by real-life events that may tell the story more effectively than a nonfiction piece could. It focuses the victims and their loved ones. It also does a phenomenal job of dismantling and destroying a lot of the lies and myths the press built up around Ted Bundy, which are still too prevalent to this day. I strongly recommend.

pickI had no idea what this book was about when I started reading it, as chapters went on I started to piece together a familiar story, but told the way it should be told. The things she says and the things she doesn‘t say.

Does anyone else immediately start singing that song from The Little Mermaid when they see the cover of this book? Just me? 😅 Like, every time I pick it up to start a new chapter or whatever? 🤣🤣
pickThis was terrific. And it was all about perspective. It is a fictionalized story based on the Ted Bundy murders. But the killer was only ever spoken of as “the defendant.” The book is wholly focused on the bright young women‘s lives that were ended and damaged by a murderer. It completely flips the script of the handsome, intelligent killer and instead tells a different, and much more interesting story about the women he targeted.

so-soI just thought this was way too long. I didn‘t like it as much as Luckiest Girl Alive at all. I really thought in the beginning that this was going to be really good and that I would be hooked all the way through but I started to lose interest probably halfway in and it didn‘t get better for me. It was a good idea for a book, just didn‘t work for me.
Man, this book. It‘s a true but fictionalized version of one Chi O that was the President of the sorority when Ted Bundy murdered her sisters at FSU. We see everything happen through her eyes but mostly we see how she is affected for the rest of her life. I loved how Knoll never calls him by his name until the last chapter, because she isn‘t going to romanticize Bundy as some Kennedy-esque killer
so-soI heard many good things about this book. It was a bit of a disappointment for me. I didn‘t find it all that interesting. It basically tells the Ted Bundy story from the victims point of view. I can see this book being made into an either a movie or a series, although I think it‘s been done before. Maybe that‘s why I didn‘t find this story all that riveting.
Hoping to finish this book before @litsybookclub tomorrow. The audiobook came in today, so that will help!
pickI appreciated the way this novel focused on the lives of the victims, rather than the murderer who is never called by name. Sometimes it was a bit difficult to keep track as the story jumped back and forth in time, but I also liked how the two storylines came together in the end. Now, I will have to do some nonfiction reading.

pickThe anger in the tagged is incandescent and it pulled the novel to my number one spot in May. It asks, aren't you also tired of all the talk surrounding perpetrators of crimes against women that be moans the "promise" of these "bright young men?"

pick5-18-24: My 13th finished book of 2024! I‘ve been waiting to read this one. It was a fascinating take on an old tale. It‘s the story of the sorority girls who were attacked one night in the 70s at their university in Florida by “The Defendant”, never named but one of the most infamous serial killers known. Pamela was the eye witness of the man who got away and with the help of a forceful woman named Tina, friend of another victim,Pamela prevailed.

Had no idea this book was about Ted Bundy until I was halfway through. I wonder if that was intentional or if I‘m just oblivious.
pickVery good. Difficult to read at times because of the subject matter. I liked the complexity of the story: difficult family lives, other men besides the serial killer who did bad things, all the ways these women were were put down and held back.
pickFinally, we get to see a side of the story we aren‘t used to: the victims. This was an engaging book, though I wasn‘t a fan of the going back and forth in time. Reading this and watching the documentaries again really made me think of how scary he really was. Bundy was another symptom of the disease of misogyny. In 2024, the world isn‘t a safer place for womxn. Ladies, remember, you don‘t owe men anything; you don‘t have to smile at them or⬇️

I can appreciate what the author was trying to do here, I just wasn‘t a fan of the execution. I‘m not a fan of extraneous details, so I was left struggling to stay in the story and it was especially difficult with Ruth‘s POV. Whenever I stopped listening, I felt no pull to return to it…so it took me forever to finish. But maybe you shouldn‘t let my opinion keep you from experiencing this book because many others have loved it.

pickReally loved this book. I enjoyed getting to know all the female characters for who they were. The author did a great job NOT glorifying Bundy, which I truly appreciated.
Really good book. I like true crime but I wish more true crime was written like this book, centering the victims story not the killers.

so-soI must have turned a corner somewhere with true crime, I used to enjoy it, I love historical fiction, and thought reading this from the POV of the victims and advocates would be great, but the whole time I was just trying to pry out what was truth from fiction, and in the end I felt a bit gross that this book about intimate thoughts and feelings of these women are fictionalized when some of these people are still with us.
I might be too serious.
pickI have a bit mixed feelings. I was intrigued but I am not sure if I was that only for the true story behind the book. Main characters had so much happening in their lives, and I am not sure if I was interested in all of that.
We really should talk about victims more. I don't know if fictional book was the right choice. Does this work as a fictional story without knowing the true story? I am not sure.

This book surpasses standard crime fiction in my opinion because in addition to being well written it also critiques misogyny in a relatable, impactful way. Knoll‘s writing is dynamic and fast paced.
Picking this one back up today now that I‘m not home alone!! 😱😱 I do find myself googling the awful crime this is based on.

The general consensus was the tagged book was a bit polarizing but ultimately kept you engaged. All of the commentary was thoughtful & thought-provoking. Enraging. Engrossing. Knoll is such a capable writer when it comes to really making you feel her characters emotions.
Parts of this felt like a raw nerve. I wish this was a more universal viewpoint given this explosion of true crime popularity - the focus on the victims rather than mythologizing the perpetrators. This examines in particular the misogyny at the heart of lionizing The Defendant.

I‘m a fan of horror and can stomach true crime so long as it doesn‘t fetishize or glamorize tragedy. But there‘s something about the fear intrinsic instilled into women from such a young age that will always *always* be relatable and upsetting.
I feel safe in Jessica Knoll‘s hands because she gets why that being a legitimate fear as a woman is infuriating.

pickI liked this. It was weird that some names were changed and others not, but I get it. I love that the authors never names Ted, just calls him The Defendent. It‘s very focused on the women, and I appreciate that. One scene I thought went a little far at the very end, but otherwise great read. Very sad.
