Last Night at the Telegraph Club author Malinda Lo returns to the Bay Area with another masterful queer coming-of-age story, this time set against the backdrop of the first major Supreme Court decisions legalizing gay marriage. Aria Tang West was looking forward to a summer on Marthas Vineyard with her best friendsone last round of sand and sun before college. But after a graduation party goes wrong, Arias parents exile her to California to stay with her grandmother, artist Joan West. Aria expects boredom, but what she finds is Steph Nichols, her grandmothers gardener. Soon, Aria is second-guessing who she is and what she wants to be, and a summer that once seemed lost becomes unforgettablefor Aria, her family, and the working-class queer community Steph introduces her to. Its the kind of summer that changes a life forever. And almost sixty years after the end of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, A Scatter of Light also offers a glimpse into Lily and Kaths lives since 1955.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Saw @peanutnine read this and I loved Last Night at the Telegraph Club so I decided to read it ASAP!

Touching story about a Chinese American 18 year old spending her summer with her artist grandmother prior to starting at MIT. It‘s there she meets some local queer folks and she‘s introduced to something she‘d never considered about herself.

I normally hate coming of age and ya but this series is great.

peanutnine Yay I'm glad you enjoyed it!! 4w
Kenyazero Wow, that was fast turnaround! I‘m glad you enjoyed this. I guess after reading both your and @peanutnine ‘s reviews I have to add this to my list! 4w
Kitta @Kenyazero yeah haha, I‘m avoiding the next camp litsy book for some reason. Not in the right mood for it but I need to get started soon! This was exactly what I wanted! 4w

I really enjoyed this coming of age story. Aria's struggle with self-discovery was messy yet relatable. Her relationship with her family members influenced her in many unseen ways. I loved the connections she had with art and science, it really brought the story together meaningfully

Finished for #SundayBuddyRead it‘s a companion novel of sorts to the author‘s Last Night at the Telegraph Club we read last year. (You don‘t need to have read Telegraph first, but there‘s a nice follow-up for characters from that book). A YA novel set in the Bay Area in 2013 where Aria is sent to spend the summer before college with her artist grandmother. Good LGBT representation in a coming-of-age story & a great June read.🏳️‍🌈

The Epilogue
The painting A SCATTER OF LIGHT ♥️
Now that was how to end it 🙃

Thoughts ???

I thank you so much for being here!

This was perfect for June 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

On to JULY 👻

Next week is OFF ♥️

Karisa The ending was great! It really saved it for me to see how her experiences were messy but led her to some amazing things. Maybe a bit over the top positive but fun. Yep, perfect for June #PrideMonth 1mo
Librarybelle Such a sweet epilogue! I think Aria will do so well, and it was nice to see that her mom was “present” virtually for her. Maybe that relationship will improve. 1mo
AmyG I liked the ending alot. Seemed real…like life. Lovely story!!! 1mo

IndoorDame The ending completely put a smile on my face! 1mo
Read4life I think the ending was real and showed the growth and love of the characters. 1mo
Deblovestoread Loved the ending. Great read for Pride month 🏳️‍🌈 1mo
Sargar114 I really enjoyed the ending. I liked how through her life experiences she was able to combine her two loves into something beautiful. It was a lovely way to bring us to the book title. 1mo
mcctrish I loved the ending and a great June read 1mo
vlwelser This was such a great June pick. One of my other book clubs picked a Jodi book that I refused to read. I was like you all are not my people. 1mo
Catsandbooks Great ending! I liked that it started and ended in an art gallery 🌈 1mo
DebinHawaii I really liked the ending & as I mentioned earlier, was happy the author didn‘t try to give Aria & Steph a HEA as it would not have been realistic. This was a great June pick for sure! 🏳️‍🌈 (edited) 1mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser yah… no Jodi. We did that once. Horrific 😝😝😝😝 1mo
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks I would live in an Art Gallery, so I agree. 1mo
vlwelser I'm guessing Jodi for pride month because there's an lgbtq character in the book would have been especially irritating. 1mo
peanutnine I loved the ending, Aria combining her two loves of science and art was sweet, especially with the connections to her grandparents. @Catsandbooks I didn't make that connection about the art gallery scenes - so cool! 1mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie @vlwelser that Jodi pick was horrible! A complete mess! 1mo
mollyrotondo I was happy Aris stuck with both art and science. So important to follow both academic and artistic passions! 1mo
vlwelser @mollyrotondo I'm still refusing to read her after that. I think we got tricked by the book blurb 1mo

Lily & Kath ❤️YAY!

So did you like this book or last book better?

Karisa It was nice to see Lily and Kath again. If we hadn‘t read that book then these parts would‘ve been odd though. I‘d have been wondering who they were and why so important. I liked the other book more. It just made more sense to me and learning about the history was fun. Although the space science and art was cool in this book too. 1mo
Librarybelle I need to read the other book! So sad I missed it last year!! 1mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa You would almost give these books together. To learn history and see what that time made possible for this time … I preferred the other book, but together I think they‘re a good discussion point for teens. 1mo
See All 25 Comments
AmyG The Lily and Kath part put a smile on my face. I liked this one much better than the first Lo book. I am not a huge YA fan (I think I am too old) but I enjoyed this. 1mo
IndoorDame I enjoyed reading the other book more because I found it way easier to get lost in, but I like that this book is out there more. In this book I kept getting stuck on details that didn‘t line up with the experiences of anyone I know. But I know this is a really specific story based loosely on an experience the author had. And the more diverse, specific queer stories are out there, the less we‘ll all look to them to be in any way representative 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I agree. The only time I‘ve experienced something like this is in religious environments I read this article this week https://view.nl.npr.org/?qs=c4cfa3ac4252cd348122f1aad4723f04f87e2ec0236cac21a700... 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I agree all experience is different. The more we read multiple avenues to people reaching true self the more accepting -I HOPE- it can be, or at least help the one reading say hey it‘s me. 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame if link doesn‘t work I‘ll email it 🙃🤣😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie thanks for that link! That was a lens I hadn‘t considered for this story, but there was a brief reference to a Catholic church, and it would make a few of the more confusing (to me) things fall into place better. 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame Frequent happening in these parts 🤣😵‍💫🤷🏻‍♀️ the religiosity and hatred homophobic indoctrination from birth has so many dire consequences … I believe it‘s why the suicide is so high. 1mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I don‘t know if that makes me more angry or sad 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I sway between the two. 1mo
Read4life Thanks for the link. I was wondering if Haley‘s home life, parents, etc played a big role in her stating that she‘s not queer. I wondered if her parents would send her away to “fix” her, tell her she was wrong or accept her. Was she embarrassed or truly confused? Maybe like the author of the article she needs more time & experience. I enjoyed both books but I think the first will stay with me longer. I think both are important reads. 1mo
Deblovestoread I liked both books with the first being my favorite of the two. The nod to the first book would likely seem weird to those that hadn‘t read it first. 1mo
Sargar114 I liked the other book more; but really enjoyed this one. I agree @Karisa while I LOVED the recap, if you didn‘t read the first one I imagine that part felt long and probably a little out of place. 1mo
mcctrish I think I liked the other book better but I think this book might be more important because it‘s current. Your link @TheBookHippie is why. I saw a slide deck on IG that said “pride month is suicide prevention” if you constantly internalize homophobia how can you survive if you‘re queer? My son published a book as part of his thesis at uni and in it he said his parents always said to him it mattered to have love not who you loved. 🥰 1mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish exactly. Pride is suicide prevention. 1mo
vlwelser I loved both for very different reasons. The other book read more like historical fiction which tends to be my jam. This is very contemporary YA. So I guess I prefer the other one. 1mo
willaful @Deblovestoread I don't know, I think it kind of fits in historical context anyway, and it's also nice to see representation of a queer forever love story in a book that definitely doesn't have one. 1mo
willaful @vlwelser I felt pretty much the same. The historical elements made the first book more interesting to me, while the contemporary YA feel of this one (despite it not being completely contemporary) appealed to me less. The explorations of different passions -- art, music, science -- were the best part of the book for me. 1mo
Deblovestoread @willaful Great point! @mcctrish @TheBookHippie Pride is suicide prevention is a powerful statement 🏳️‍🌈 1mo
Catsandbooks So nice to see how Lily and Kath's story ends! I did like Telegraph a bit better but I enjoyed this one too. So important to see all kinds of relationships and LGBTQIA+ representation. 🏳️‍🌈 1mo
DebinHawaii I really loved Telegraph for the era & history & Lily & Kath, so I was happy to see they got a happy ending in this one. I did like this book too, just not quite as much. 1mo
peanutnine I was so happy Lily and Kath got their happy ending! And seeing the support of her whole family was really lovely. I really liked both books in different ways, hard to pick a favorite 1mo
mollyrotondo I liked Telegraph Club better but that‘s because I prefer a YA historical fiction book over a YA contemporary book. But I agree with others that this book is important for young readers because they can connect more to the contemporary timeline. I would definitely read more of this author. 1mo

Lisa

Steph

Well. That was a messy messy lesson.
Lots to take from this….

Karisa It made sense how that was all resolved. True to life but still tough to read. If someone is already in a messy relationship, there‘s no room for you. Let them resolve their stuff first. Steph should have set those boundaries clearly with Aria from the get go. Aria should have respected the relationship more. Showed her youth though 1mo
Librarybelle I found myself not liking Steph as much as I did in the beginning. It‘s like I feel a little protective over Aria. Aria should have acknowledged that Steph was in a committed relationship with Lisa, though there were clear issues in that relationship. However, Aria is young and learning about herself, so I have to give her some leeway. 1mo
AmyG They were both so young, figuring things out. Isn‘t that youth, life? It seemed very real (very young and human) to me, which I liked. 1mo
See All 14 Comments
Deblovestoread I think Steph was 23 and having 5 years on Aria I would expect her to do better. I really liked her in the beginning but was so disappointed in her choices. However, life is messy and I‘m sure it was a learning experience for both Steph and Aria. 1mo
Sargar114 I think Steph got caught up in the moment. I was glad she eventually made the adult decision to cut it off with Aria. Yes, she should have done it sooner, but 23 is also young and she wasn‘t happy in her relationship with Lisa and probably didn‘t know how to cut it off. 1mo
mcctrish 23 still lacks a full frontal cortex, Steph has had to deal with a lot of grown up life things so it feels like she should make better decisions but like @Deblovestoread said Life is messy and she still has lessons to learn and her path to forge. 23 is too young to settle. I feel bad for Lisa, but she needs to set boundaries not hang on for dear life 1mo
vlwelser So messy. But also very real. 1mo
Catsandbooks It was a disaster for everyone but they're young and will hopefully learn from their mistakes. 1mo
DebinHawaii Very messy. I didn‘t like Lisa & her relationship with Steph was not good but Steph cheating with Aria & how she went about it made me respect her less. I was glad she wasn‘t in the 2023 scene as re-entering or having been part of Aria‘s life. 1mo
peanutnine So messy. We knew it would hit the fan but having it out in public was 🫣 Steph definitely still had some growing of her own to do and I'm glad she finally called it off with Aria (better late than never) 1mo
mollyrotondo I was so annoyed about Steph. I ended up not liking her and she was my favorite character in the beginning besides Joan. I understand a YA book thrives on drama (🎭 😂) but I wanted so much for Steph to either be an older confidante to Aria during this summer or an unattached summer fling. But instead it was DRAMA. But it was very realistic I will say that. 1mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo DRAMA is apparently FUN 😵‍💫🤯😝👀 for YA. One of my friends loves to read romantic messes for fun, it‘s her favorite. 👀😝😳🤣😅 I cannot. Whew. 1mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I don‘t find that fun 😂 I find it frustrating! But to each their own lol 1mo

Joan 😫😫😫😫😫😫

So sad….
Not sure what to think of the dad …

I like how art and science teach Aria about life.
The arts are so important I think it gets missed way too much in school.

Science it goes without saying 😵‍💫

Karisa The art and science connections were the best parts of this book. They made Aria more real. Each connected to a different grandparent which was sweet. The Joan in the kitchen and hospital scenes were gut wrenching and raw. I was so irritated with Aria for how focused she was on Steph during that time though. Give it a break and focus on your grandmother! Sheesh! 🙄 1mo
Librarybelle The arts do get missed in school and are usually the first cuts when there are budget woes. 😔 I suspected we would see a sad scene with Joan; I wish it didn‘t happen, but it had to, I think, for Aria to learn. And yes, @Karisa , Aria‘s worry over Steph rather than Joan was a little irritating! Maybe it shows that Aria still needs to mature, to learn how to prioritize big things in life. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I know quite a few teenage girls like this 😵‍💫 OY and even an adult or two 😫👀 … @Librarybelle (edited) 1mo
See All 18 Comments
Librarybelle @TheBookHippie So true! Way more than I care to think…sometimes the teens I knew were way better at prioritizing than the adults! 1mo
AmyG I also liked the arts and sciences connections. Aria has a bit of both her grandparents in her which I loved. And isn‘t that they way of most teens? Concerned with themselves? Part of growing up and learning. As for Joan…ag, how life can turn in a moment…good or bad. Aria got quite the education that summer! 1mo
IndoorDame I loved that Aria and Joan both showed different connections between art and science. Too often they get labeled as completely separate worlds and people assume they can‘t interact or they can‘t be involved with both. 1mo
IndoorDame As much as moments like Aria in the hospital made me want to shake her, I do appreciate YA books where the protagonists are flawed teenagers so the target audience can actually relate and learn from them. 1mo
Read4life @IndoorDame I agree! 1mo
Deblovestoread I loved all the art and science bits and that Aria has both things in herself. Sad about Joan but with her failing memory I was prepared for something unpleasant. And I agree with Amy about teenagers. They are so wrapped up in their feelings. 1mo
Sargar114 The science and art connections and overlap was wonderful! I also had a feeling Joan wasn‘t long for this world; there was quite a bit of foreshadowing. While Aria‘s obsession with Steph during this time was annoying, it felt real. She was emotionally vulnerable with all of Joan‘s health issues and felt comfort in Steph being her first love. We all make dumb decisions when it comes to first lives. 1mo
mcctrish I agree with everyone, Joan was my favourite character ❤️💔 what a life she lived 1mo
vlwelser I was so sad. Like trying not to cry in public sad. 1mo
willaful I remember visiting my grandfather while he was dying and I regret to say I was far more wrapped up in my own teen drama than in what was going on with him. :-( So I can understand where Aria's head was at. And as @Sargar114 says, she was very emotionally vulnerable. 1mo
Catsandbooks So sad about Joan, but I had a feeling something bad would happen. I teared up when they were crying on the floor and Analemma was whining. I loved the science and especially the art. It makes me want to create and experiment. 1mo
DebinHawaii Although somewhat expected the scenes with Joan were crushing. I wanted more time with her as a character. I was frustrated by Aria too, but given her age & the distance with both her parents, it does make sense she needed that emotional connection that she felt with Steph. 1mo
peanutnine The scenes with Joan made me tear up, so heartbreaking. I think her dad finally allowing himself to be vulnerable around Aria was a good thing. It seemed like he hid a lot of himself after his divorce to shield her but then she assumed how he was feeling. I hope they will have a more open relationship from now on 1mo
mollyrotondo I loved the art and science. It was the best part of this book. I was disappointed Joan died even though we knew her health was waning. And it did ultimately help Aria mature a little more. Just didn‘t like that we lost such an important character. 1mo

I really do like Tasha and their friendship.
This was an important thing to show the YA reading people I think.

Hayley I‘m just not sure what to think. We didn‘t get enough info…

Thoughts ?

Karisa I liked Tasha too. At first I wasn‘t sure about that twist in the story but seeing that Aria‘s connection with Tasha stood the test of time made it work. Not sure about Haley either though. Aria‘s high school group all seemed so entitled and hard to relate to at times, especially Haley. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa a bit ultra privileged nonsense 😵‍💫😫 1mo
Librarybelle I also liked Tasha. And you‘re right…it shows that a friendship can weather a storm if both parties work together on it. I‘m glad they stay connected. Haley is no good! 1mo
See All 17 Comments
AmyG While I found it odd at first that Tasha and Aria both discovered they were queer…it played out well and worked for me. I, too, liked how they dealt with the issue and continued their friendship. They both seemed to grow with the help of each other. Haley did not. Is she bisexual? Who knows…but she seemed to feel shame and choose to not face things. So is the way of some people. 1mo
AmyG @TheBookHippie Entitled? Ha, you think? Affluenza…we used to call it. 1mo
IndoorDame I grew to like Tasha too. And I also never got a sense of Haley, so I have no opinion on her or their relationships. But I never came around to liking this twist in the story. I read someone saying they thought it was the “if you‘re queer so are all your friends” trope, but realistically that would look like Aria joining or creating a queer friend group not finding out she‘d been part of one all along. 1mo
Read4life We didn‘t get enough of Haley for me to fully understand her reactions. I wasn‘t surprised she wasn‘t with Aria & Tasha at the end of the story. 1mo
Deblovestoread I agree with others that Haley wasn‘t fully formed as a character. She came across as not being ready to accept her authentic self. I really liked Tasha and glad their friendship stood the test of time. I still think it‘s weird Aria didn‘t have any clue about Tasha and Haley‘s relationship though. 1mo
Sargar114 I felt similar @AmyG I liked that Lo showed Aria‘s concern about the possibility of change in their friendship but also that just because Tasha likes girls doesn‘t mean she likes EVERY girl. Feels important to show that in a YA. Haley just seemed like a typical teenager to me, just also finding herself but we don‘t know enough of her perspective to really know. I wonder if she felt like a 3rd wheel of the friendship between Aria and Tasha? 1mo
mcctrish I think Tasha understood she was queer, I don‘t think queer was on Aria‘s radar - I think she was realizing she wasn‘t feeling what she thought she should feel towards boys but it wasn‘t until she met/saw someone she was attracted to that it clicked. Teenagers are so caught up in their own shit I think they can miss stuff in front of their faces ( including dishes, wet towels, shoes) 1mo
mcctrish I think Haley feels pressure to conform to societal/family expectations, who knows how that will go 1mo
vlwelser I think Lo does a great job showing a wide spectrum of female teen/ya lgbtqia+ types. Hayley fits with that goal if it's intentional. I love the Aria and Tasha friendship. 1mo
Catsandbooks I'm glad Tasha and Aria remained friends. I didn't like Haley. She was more concerned about what other people thought of her rather than being honest with her friends. 1mo
DebinHawaii @vlwelser I agree, I thought she did a good job of showing different types without making them caricatures. And I agree that Haley wasn‘t formed enough as a character to get much of a read on her. 1mo
peanutnine I agree with everyone's thoughts about Haley not being a fully formed character to really know what she was going through. I wasn't sure how I felt about Tasha at first but I ended up really liking her friendship with Aria. I think high school friendships can be lasting, especially if you go through something big together and work on the relationship through difficult things. I'm glad they stayed close 1mo
mollyrotondo I‘m glad Tasha turned out to be a good friend to Aria. Wasn‘t sure if Aria was going to totally grow apart from her high school friends. But glad Tasha and Aria remained tight. Haley just seemed to want to do what others expected of her. She won‘t grow into herself until she grows out of worrying about what others think. 1mo

A coming of age story of Aria, a high school graduate going to stay with her artist grandmother in the San Francisco area after an unfortunate incident with a boy dismantles her original plans. We learn a lot about who Aria is and where she comes from and in all this she learns about various kinds of love and herself. #sundaybuddyread

Sargar114 As an added bonus if you read Last Night at the Telegraph Club, you get a fun follow up with our main characters from that one. While I think if you didn‘t read that, that portion of the story probably seemed odd. 1mo

My day of adulting ended with a float to finish this. It‘s from the library and I have another book to return so I figured I‘d do one trip sooner than later. My FAVOURITE part of this book was all the art talk, the YA inability to talk to people about feelings/concerns is tiresome ( cuz I‘m so past it) this book is a lovely look at first love and its intensity . I loved the connection to ML‘s first book and the ending #sundaybuddyread

Steph
😅

Thoughts about their kissing sessions ??????

Librarybelle I can see why Steph feels beholden to Lisa, but she‘s also putting Aria in a tough spot. Aria just came out, she‘s kissing Steph, and yet Steph feels she has loyalty to Lisa. I feel for Aria! 1mo
vlwelser Steph needs to get away from Lisa and this is a huge symptom or sign that it's time to go. 1mo
Deblovestoread I don‘t like this! I want Aria to have good, positive experiences and kissing someone who‘s in a committed relationship doesn‘t seem like a good path to that. 1mo
See All 14 Comments
kspenmoll I agree with everyone. Aria needs to have experiences that are not furtive or guilt ridden- not good for her. 1mo
Karisa @Deblovestoread Yes! Aria is just figuring things out. This doesn‘t feel like a good way to go. Even a summer fling would be better. Someone that‘s not already involved in a messy relationship 1mo
IndoorDame I wouldn‘t mind this for Aria if Steph either had the realization that she needed to leave, or presented it more like a casual summer fling and toned down the mixed messages. But as is, it‘s getting a bit weird for both girls. (edited) 1mo
mcctrish I hate this. Aria has enough on her plate. Steph needs to act her age and talk to Lisa and Aria and maybe a third person who is not involved to figure her shit out ( easier said than done, I know) 1mo
mcctrish But as Aria said, she‘s leaving for school so maybe that makes Steph safe for her in her newbie gay state 1mo
Read4life No matter how unhealthy or unhappy Steph‘s relationship with Lisa, Steph owes it to Lisa & Aria to end it before starting anything (even a fling) with Aria. Dishonesty is a lousy foundation for a relationship or a friendship. 1mo
AmyG Steph needs to decide what she wants. Both are confused-and are so young. I can only hope no one gets hurt too badly. 1mo
peanutnine @Read4life 💯 - cheating is not good for any of the parties involved. And I agree with @Deblovestoread & @kspenmoll this is not a good first queer experience for Aria. She shouldn't have to look back on it with shame 1mo
Sargar114 I agree with everyone, this make out buddy situation does not seem great for either party involved. I did laugh when the gear shift got between them. 1mo
mollyrotondo I am just upset this is going this way. I wanted Steph and Aria to either have a cute summer love story or (since Steph is in a relationship) have Steph be a supportive new friend to Aria while Aria figures things out and starts her new journey to college with a fresh look at herself. But not the cheating and the confusion. That can only end in disaster. 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This is just messy. I think Steph needs time alone as an adult. Aria needs a partner who's fully invested in helping her find her identity and is totally available to do so. 1mo

Lunch with mom
WHEW

So should she let her pay???

Her talk with her Dad after…
Interesting both their thoughts ?

Communication issues all over the place 🫣🤣 kids and parents 👀

Librarybelle Mom is a bit much. I‘m torn about paying for MIT…I can see both sides, but my pessimistic personality makes me think it‘s too little too late. I‘m glad Aria and her dad had a good talk. 1mo
Deblovestoread I thought it weird that mom‘s engaged, not yet married, and promising an expensive education based on future husband‘s 💵 1mo
vlwelser I think it's too late but she should still take the money MIT is expensive. 1mo
See All 14 Comments
kspenmoll Sad about her Mom/ their relationship- sad that mom suddenly wants a closeness she never could give before. I wonder if it‘s just a performance for her fiancée. let her pay for MIT … 1mo
Karisa @vlwelser @kspenmoll I‘m with you both. As a parent of a university student and with a spouse who still has Master‘s degree loans to pay—Heck yeah! Let her mom pay if she‘s offering and can. Her mom is a lot. That was a sad scene. Both her parents seem so self-absorbed 1mo
IndoorDame I‘m torn about MIT. Her dad encouraging her to do it makes me think he needs the money and/or is trying to get Aria to think about how private university debt hampers kids starting out these days. But… aloof parents like that rarely offer money without strings. And with emotions running so high and tense already, being tied to her Mom for something so huge is also a debt she may not want to start life with. 1mo
mcctrish Take. The. Money. I think the mom needs to open up about the challenges of being an artist. I‘m glad the dad finally spoke about being fine with letting the relationship go. Aria needs to understand that all relationships aren‘t forever ones and that it‘s okay to end them when they don‘t work. Mom and dad need to both talk to her about why they got together and why they split. Kids don‘t understand but now Aria is old enough to have the talk 1mo
AmyG I can only hope that maybe the Mom reaching out monetarily and “momwise” is a step in healing their relationship. 1mo
peanutnine I mean, take the money. MIT is expensive. But it bothers me that her mom thinks money will fix their relationship. I think Aria would prefer for her mom to take more of an interest in her 1mo
Sargar114 The practical adult in me says take the money and let her pay for MIT. I do understand her not wanting to feel beholden to her; but she‘s he mom and she wants to do it. Seems like the least she could do if she‘s not there for her emotionally. 1mo
mollyrotondo My teenage self would also not have taken the money but my adult self says take the money! It will help you! I was surprised my her mom opening up to Aria. I feel like once she leaves Aria will be in the back of her mind again but in this moment I did see her mom a little differently. But she‘s very self absorbed. And yes @TheBookHippie parents and kids should talk to each other because a lot of misunderstandings going on between Aria and her dad 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mom is a handful, but take that money!! It seems like she didn't offer much financial support up until now, so I'd absolutely take it. Maybe having a new husband with money will allow mom to be there more for Aria. As for dad, why has he shielded Aria for so long? Yes, she seems like a "young" 18 year old, but is it just how she is, or has everyone handled her with kids' gloves? (And partly why she didn't handle the picture situation well?) 1mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I wouldn‘t take the money.. even now. However I don‘t have normal parents 😅 but massive miscommunication here. 1mo
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Such a good point!!! Way too sheltered and no adult guidance I‘m thinking. 1mo

TheBookHippie @vlwelser YES!!! Field Trip. 1mo
IndoorDame I‘ve only had proper Dim Sum once, but the experience was as cool as the food! Nothing like the rest of the time I‘ve hung out or eaten in Chinatown in any city. 1mo

Tasha comes to visit ..
Well
I did not see that coming
Interesting plot twist
I like her

Why do you think Aria didn‘t say anything ?

Librarybelle I kind of suspected there was more to Tasha and Haley‘s friendship than just a platonic friendship. I was wondering why Aria did not say anything as well…she could fully connect with Tasha and how Tasha is feeling, but I can also understand why Aria wanted to give Tasha the space to talk and provide complete support to Tasha. 1mo
Deblovestoread I didn‘t see it coming either but it seemed weird that Aria wouldn‘t have picked up a vibe when they were together in high school. 1mo
vlwelser This also surprised me. I feel bad for this girl that is made to feel like a shameful secret. 1mo
See All 13 Comments
Karisa Maybe I‘m just feeling cranky, but that plot twist was a bit too much. They were both lesbians (maybe Haley too) but didn‘t know it. Tasha opens up and Aria is quiet. I thought they were close friends? Maybe Aria just wants to keep this new self awareness to herself for now because she‘s still processing it all? She‘s also dating someone who has a serious girlfriend so isn‘t really on solid ground. She still hasn‘t told Joan either. 1mo
kspenmoll I had no idea!!! Clueless me! Tasha & Haley- a total surprise to me! I am thinking too @Karisa that Aria is adjusting to this new identity- 1mo
IndoorDame I didn‘t see it either. I can think of lots of reasons why Aria wouldn‘t have noticed their relationship, but this does sort of contradict the ideas I had about how she might arrive so clueless about queer culture. It‘s a very odd plot twist. Waiting to see if it pays off, or just drags everything in tasteless direction… 1mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame in my old age teens would not have thought of it. Or discussed it. But now I would think unless you‘re just trapped in your own world oblivious or just didn‘t think of it. I‘m not sure. But as she didn‘t think of it until now maybe she was just oblivious??? If you see someone one way it‘s hard to correct years of that in your brain I think. I hope this clears up in the book though! 1mo
mcctrish Young people are extremely self involved 🤣🤣🤣 I hope that Aria just wanted to let Tasha have her moment and then will take her to the Queer Music Festival and say “funny thing happened when I came out west” 1mo
AmyG Again I agree with @Karisa. I don‘t- knowing what we know- feel this twist was necessary. 1mo
peanutnine I had a feeling this reveal was coming. Honestly with Aria's character it makes sense that she was oblivious to their relationship. It seems like she was never exposed to queer culture and so it never even crossed her mind as a possibility (for herself or others) until she started hanging out with Steph and her friends. Once it was in her face, the puzzle pieces started falling into place. 1mo
Sargar114 I agree it feels a bit outlandish of a twist. Then again maybe they‘re friends because they have a certain level of comfort that neither of them really knew about the other 🤷🏼‍♀️. I agree @Karisa @kspenmoll I think Aria didn‘t saying anything mostly because she doesn‘t quite know what to think of herself quite yet and is still figuring it out. 1mo
mollyrotondo I knew this was the case with Tasha and Haley. There was just a vibe in some of Aria‘s memories. They were always together and they were pushing Aria to have a boyfriend that one summer but weren‘t pushing each other to go out with boys? That was a big clue for me. So not a twist for me. 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well, that was a plot twist out of left field for me! I wonder if Aria is still unsure of her own label - lesbian, bi, queer, etc. Since it seems like she's only realized this sexual interest in women a few weeks ago, and had her first kiss with another woman about a week ago, maybe she didn't feel secure in saying she's a lesbian just yet. 1mo

Lunch with Joan & Steph
Art talk 👀
Picture taking🙃
So, Lisa doesn‘t like Steph in music, and I‘m betting not because of rent.🤷🏻‍♀️

If who you‘re with doesn‘t support your art in some way can it work?

Librarybelle I am not a fan of Lisa. I would imagine support is needed, or at least some understanding and respect, when it comes to partners and their dreams. It seems like Lisa‘s jealousy is overshadowing any support for Steph‘s creativity and art. 1mo
Deblovestoread I feel like Lisa is very insecure and that leads to wanting control of your partner and their choices. 1mo
Karisa Steph needs to break up with Lisa. Cheating on her and moping isn‘t doing either of them any good. Lisa is acting jealous—well… I don‘t like Lisa, but I‘m finding it hard to like Steph too. She wants to make music and not be so settled down. Go do it already, Steph! Aria isn‘t really Steph‘s main focus either—just a side note. 😬 1mo
See All 17 Comments
vlwelser I don't like this. Steph needs to leave. Lisa is very controlling. 1mo
kspenmoll @Karisa I totally agree about the cheating & moping Steph is engaged in- Steph seems to be ok with Lisa‘s control to a certain extent- I wonder if she would play with the band if Aria did not encourage her. 1mo
IndoorDame There are a couple things that are unusual about their relationship for the young queer community they‘re part of, so I keep wanting to hear Mel or another of their friends comment on all the unhealthy things that are frustrating us to read about. 1mo
mcctrish I actually like Lisa more than Steph right now. It was Lisa who took Steph in when her parents kicked her out - very nice of Lisa. Is that enough to make a romantic relationship ? No. But they did. Is Lisa aware on some level that Steph wants something else ? Certainly on some level and that‘s causing her to push back/control/force something to happen. Steph, who is in a committed long term relationship, is toying with a young girl who is (cont‘d) 1mo
mcctrish just coming to terms with her sexuality. Should Steph be listening to her, supporting her, being a sounding board? For sure! Should she be making out with her because she‘s in a muddle over her current life situation, HELL NO!!! 1mo
mcctrish Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the art talk. I want more Joan 1mo
Read4life I agree, @Karisa . This is an unhealthy relationship with Lisa‘s jealousy and controlling behavior and Steph not standing up for herself. Steph isn‘t being fair to Aria, either. 1mo
AmyG @Karisa Yes…this seems like an unhealthy relationship. I feel Lisa doesn‘t support Steph out of fear…of maybe losing her. Yet Steph isn‘t honest with Lisa. She seems to want to stay due to perhaps guilt, feeling she owes something to Lisa (who took her in). 1mo
Sargar114 It does seem like Lisa has been trying to force the relationship and Steph is staying out of a sense of loyalty and obligation. Doesn‘t seem like a good fit. Then again, I can‘t imagine Steph and Aria working out either. This feels like an intense summer fling, Steph looking for something different and Aria trying to find herself. 1mo
mollyrotondo @Sargar114 I agree. Steph and Lisa should not be together because Lisa feels Steph pulling away but instead of letting her go she is trying to control her to force her to stay. That‘s unhealthy. And Steph giving up on a dream to make Lisa happy isn‘t healthy either. But Steph and Aria aren‘t good for each other either because right now Steph‘s life is out of wack and Aria is a reprieve from that and Aria doesn‘t fully know herself yet. 1mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo SO MESSSSSY! 😵‍💫 1mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie after rereading what I wrote the messiness screams! 😂 youth is messy but from an adult perspective I want to shake them all 😂 (edited) 1mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo Ha. Yes. Youth 😅😵‍💫😫😝 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I enjoyed that Joan & Stephano had a little extra bonding time with the art talk. Steph is only about 21, right? She's still young. Just how much older is Lisa? Can they really make this work long-term? It really seems like Steph stays with her out of obligation. And she's not doing Aria any favors with these lesbian "firsts" being with someone who can't really give 100% of herself. It's not fair to either Lisa or Aria. 1mo

vlwelser I love this. I hope the author keeps writing these types of stories. Though I believe she started out in fantasy. 2mo
Sargar114 Enjoying this one, but I still think I like Telegraph Club more. It may be because I have the audio version of this one and I don‘t really care for the narration too much, but still liking it. 2mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser She did -I may have to look at those 🤣👀 (edited) 2mo
IndoorDame I‘m loving this so far! Maybe it‘s all the art. I reserve the right to change my mind if the ending is too saccharine, but I loved The Telegraph Club, so I have high hopes. 2mo
kspenmoll @Sargar114 Oh! I missed this! 2mo
kspenmoll Now I can read on…yay! 2mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤣🤣SAME 2mo
Librarybelle I like this! I missed the group‘s reading of The Telegraph Club last year, so cannot make a comparison, but this has a great mix of the typical YA awkwardness with all the feelings of questioning and finding oneself. 2mo
mcctrish I love the art and I love that there is this future connection from Telegraph ❤️❤️ 2mo
Karisa It‘s good, but a little too YA for my tastes. I liked Telegraph a little more probably for the historical points. Loving the art and Joan! I really like Mel too 2mo
Deblovestoread I‘m liking this. Hoping for more connection to the Telegraph Club. 2mo
willaful @Sargar114 It's not gripping me the way LNatTC did. Perhaps I get enough of queer young adults at home. 😂 2mo
TheBookHippie @willaful I‘m enjoying it but I‘m not as in love with it as Telegraph. Which I now want to reread! 2mo
Catsandbooks I like it so far, about as much as Telegraph club. I'm hoping the connection comes soon though 2mo
peanutnine I'm really enjoying this one so far, and reading everyone's thoughts on it ☺️ 2mo
mollyrotondo I loved Telegraph Club and I think that‘s because it was historical fiction. I still love this author‘s writing a lot! I just don‘t always love more contemporary YA stories. But I‘m still enjoying this story. I really hope she comes out with another book soon because I definitely want to continue to read this author. 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo ME TOO! I hope she writes more! 2mo
PageShifter I am enjoying how easy & light this is to read. And the science & art. Those makes this feel a bit more. 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm finding this one just OK so far. I enjoyed LNatTC better. That one felt a bit dangerous & educational about the time period. This one just feels geared toward a younger audience. 1mo

vlwelser Steph seems like a good and steady influence. I approve. But she's also young and seems to let Lisa push her around. 2mo
See All 17 Comments
IndoorDame I like Aria‘s friendship with both Steph and Mel and the ways they‘re helping her discover things about herself. I have 2 conflicting thoughts about Steph‘s character arc at this point, both of which would effect Aria, 1 of which would make me happy. 2mo
kspenmoll Aria- courageous. Steph is so good for her. 2mo
Librarybelle I like how Steph is being there for Aria without being pushy. Aria needs someone like that, and it was courageous for Aria to make that first step. 2mo
mcctrish I am so happy @TheBookHippie gifted me AR‘s poetry because I immediately grabbed it and read 21 love poems ❤️ I like Steph too and I agree with @vlwelser Lisa is manipulating her. Maybe this means Steph helps Aria find herself and Aria helps Steph know she deserves better ( Steph has had a lot happen to her so I get she doesn‘t want to make rash decisions) 2mo
Karisa I want to root for Aria and Steph, but there is Lisa still seriously in the picture. I don‘t hate Lisa—she‘s perceptive that Aria/Steph have chemistry. Steph is being a little sneaky keeping their meetups secret. Is that a good relationship basis or is this a summer fling or just a crush? Ooh, that poem is steamy! 🔥 2mo
Deblovestoread I like Steph and I like Aria finding out about herself through her crush on Steph. Lisa is not my favorite. I do think Steph isn‘t being honest with Lisa about her time with Aria and I‘m not a fan of that. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa the poem is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish ♥️♥️♥️♥️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @Deblovestoread I‘m thinking Lisa is controlling I hope Steph figures it all out as well … but yes, not being upfront isn‘t good. 2mo
willaful Am I the only one a bit weirded out that Steph's teacher gave her the book of poems? 2mo
Catsandbooks I like that Steph is letting Aria explore things on her own 2mo
mollyrotondo I like Steph a lot. I think she‘s a good friend to Aria. I‘d love for her to be more but I‘m not sure if it‘s going to go that far. She is a little older and knows Aria hasn‘t figured herself out yet. I don‘t see Steph dating Aria but maybe just being there to help her through this discovery of herself. But I wouldn‘t be unhappy if they got together 😆 2mo
PageShifter I like their friendship but at the same feel a bit suspicious. They are hiding that from the rest of the group and it doesn't feel right. 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well, that's a saucy little poem! I can't get a read on Steph - is she interested in Aria or just being friendly. As someone who knew she was into boys very early on, it's strange to think that Aria made it 18 years before realizing she likes girls. I'm curious if there were signs that she missed. Aria does seem like a young 18 year old. 1mo

Arias friend Tasha calls
Sends videos
Haley…
Nathan her first boyfriend
Who she actually didn‘t like…

AmyG “Old” friends vs new ones. VERY different. 2mo
Sargar114 Nathan didn‘t seem like a boyfriend, just a summer fling that was appropriate for that friend group. The friend groups are very different, Aria is still finding herself. It‘s interesting how we‘re using her memories to help with that. I‘m glad that Tasha called and that it seems like she‘s a genuine friend. It‘ll be interesting if Aria ever feels comfortable enough with that group to come out like she did to Steph. 2mo
vlwelser It was weird that she didn't seem to know who Nathan was when the friend brought him up. But then there was this elaborate story about how she really wasn't all that into him. 2mo
See All 16 Comments
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I‘m pretending she‘s so preoccupied she blanked 🤣🤣🤷🏻‍♀️😂🫣 2mo
IndoorDame This scene was written really well. You could feel the discomfort of one version of Aria encroaching on another as Tasha popped into an environment where she felt free to try out being someone different without having to explain herself. 2mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie @vlwelser that‘s what I assumed, that it just took her a moment to change gears and remember 2mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame She was definitely not free and seems to be getting inclination of self now in hindsight, which happens frequently .. it‘s a good arch. 2mo
kspenmoll @Sargar114 I agree re Nathan etc. Tasha‘s call pulls us back to that scene & why Aria is in CA. For me that was a good thing as I am caught up in her present. I hope one day she can come out if those friends are true, but only if. 2mo
kspenmoll @IndoorDame Hood insight re: Aria‘s feeling of being free to be her authentic self- discovering her authentic self in CA. 2mo
Librarybelle I like that insight, @IndoorDame , and yes, you as the reader could feel her internal conflict. I felt awkward for Aria, which tells me the author did a really great job with this scene. 2mo
mcctrish I feel like a gulf could be opening between Aria and her high school friends and it gets wider when she goes to uni, she might experience the same thing with her new friends too once she leaves but they prepare her to find her people 2mo
willaful @IndoorDame well put. 2mo
Catsandbooks I think now that Aria is out of her normal area and meeting new people she's seeing that maybe she's never been that close with her friends. Maybe that she was just doing stuff cause she thought she should. 2mo
mollyrotondo @Catsandbooks yes I definitely agree with you! After meeting new people she‘s starting to see what real friends are like and that maybe she was just trying to fit in with her HS friends but didn‘t actually have anything in common with them. 2mo
PageShifter People can grow apart and I think that might have happened with her & her older friends. 2mo

IndoorDame @Sargar114 @TheBookHippie hahaha the she‘s grieving part does seem an especially stupid realization, and she seems a tad old to be having the my parents are people moment, but at least that realization makes her happy and she lets go of the it‘s all about me conception super easily, I thought this was a really sweet scene 2mo
IndoorDame @AmyG love Joan! She‘s my favorite character! 2mo
kspenmoll @AmyG Joan is such a light herself & Aria in this book. 💜🩵💙 2mo
Karisa @IndoorDame Yes! I keep thinking Aria feels younger too especially since her parents were not very present/protective (until the nude photo incident). @Sargar114 😂 2mo
Librarybelle Joan is awesome! 2mo
Sargar114 @IndoorDame I don‘t know, I‘m 40 and I‘m still having to remind myself that my parents are real people…then again probably for different reasons lol 😂 2mo
IndoorDame @Sargar114 😂 I suppose it‘s a lifelong lesson 2mo
mcctrish I love Joan and I know she needs to be out of the picture for Aria to do her thing but I want her around more. @Sargar114 I find it easier the older I get to see my parents at the different ages just living their lives - I am way more introverted than they were so they still seem more like grown ups than I am 2mo
Catsandbooks I want more of Joan too! We know Aria is not dumb (hello MIT) but how do you not realize your grandma is grieving? 2mo
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks SELF involved...... 2mo
mollyrotondo I love Joan. I wish there was more Joan in this book. I do understand Aria as a teenager not fully understanding the adults in their lives reactions. We think our elders are resilient. We expect them to be our rocks that we have to remind ourselves they grieve too in their own ways. 2mo
PageShifter I loved the scene, @mollyrotondo said it well.

And I read this as a realization how Joan was grieving. Not that she was grieving.

The MOM. 😵‍💫

Also opera singer child name Aria….

AmyG Not a big fan of Mom. 2mo
Sargar114 Ugh the mom…I didn‘t even make that connection, but makes sense. At least Aria is a pretty name still. 2mo
vlwelser Mom seems really self absorbed. 2mo
See All 17 Comments
IndoorDame @vlwelser 💯 which is probably great for her life as an artist and performer, but a terrible trait for her life as a parent 2mo
kspenmoll I feel the same- suddenly she wants to be a mother & see Aria ? 2mo
Karisa Not impressed by any of the parents in this book—sigh YA trope “absent parents” 2mo
Librarybelle Agree about the mom…not a fan of her. 2mo
mcctrish I feel like Aria isn‘t doing herself any favours with not talking about the experience but as we get further into the stories and her attraction to Steph I wonder - is Steph the first time she‘s been attracted to a girl? ( Steph‘s story about having intense relationships with her girlfriends when she was young reminded me of a friend in uni‘s younger sister - she would be utterly devastated over the slightest disagreement) 2mo
mcctrish Or. Has she been feeling different from how she perceives her friends feel and was that whole point of the get together that ended in photos a way for her to see how she felt to understand how she feels therefore she can‘t talk about what was going on because she hasn‘t quite figured it out? Or is she pansexual ? Also something to figure out (edited) 2mo
Deblovestoread The mom is awful. And catching a lunch on a layover isn‘t parenting, its convenience. 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I had similar thoughts. I think she‘s just figuring it alll out. 2mo
willaful @mcctrish I think it's the first time she's noticed she's attracted. 2mo
Catsandbooks Ugh yeah the mom is terrible. Also I hate how judgy she is when she barely talks to her daughter. Like you have no idea who your daughter even is. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks I thought that as well... Does she even KNOW her daughter??? 2mo
mollyrotondo I can‘t stand the mother. I agree @Deblovestoread that lunch during a layover with your daughter is not parenting. She‘s the worst. 2mo
PageShifter I am not waiting much from their meeting. 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick How kind of her to dedicate a few hours to meet her daughter for lunch. Aria is 18. She's going to live on campus in two months. Good thing she really doesn't need her judgemental parents around at this point. 1mo

TheBookHippie @Karisa 🙃 now who is going to tell the homophobia folk the sun is a rainbow 🤣🤣🤣😵‍💫😵‍💫🫣🤪 2mo
Librarybelle I was very excited to see the connection to the title! I love finding these little nuggets in books! 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie 😂 They are already afraid of rainbows! 2mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie that would be me 🙋🏻‍♀️ telling the grade 5‘s last week they can do 🌈 when I introduced my art project ( semi school wide flower rainbow on the wall coming in from outdoors) so we talked about science and why the rainbow was chosen as a symbol and then we painted #leaveyourbullshitathome (edited) 2mo

TheBookHippie @Karisa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 2mo
Catsandbooks @kspenmoll I love all the science and art too! 2mo
mollyrotondo @kspenmoll I also love the combination of science and art in this book. Two things so important to our world but usually are ignored or belittled or forgotten. 2mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie the sun will soon be banned 🙄 🥴 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I so agree!!! I love all the art & science! 2mo

Abstract expressionism #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD

Abstract expressionism in the United States emerged as a distinct art movement in the immediate aftermath of World War II and gained mainstream acceptance in the 1950s, a shift from the American social realism of the 1930s influenced by the Great Depression and Mexican muralists

https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/abex/hd_abex.htm

AmyG I do love Jackson Pollock. 2mo
kspenmoll @AmyG My son in early elementary school was introduced to Jackson Pollock. He embraced him fiercely because scribbling and lines and dots were about the extent of what my son could create with his fine gross motor and motor planning challenges. Since that time he has been immensely interested in art and arranging trips for us to various exhibits in New England & NYC. (edited) 2mo
AmyG @kspenmoll That‘s awesome! Art trips sound wonderful. I loved Mass MoCA…have been there once. As for NYC…what better place to visit exhibits and galleries. My son and wife lived in NYC and miss the art so much. (edited) 2mo

mcctrish One of my favourite things to do is visit art galleries/museums around the world and see the art I‘ve learned about irl, even excellent photos never do it justice. Christine the DIA is one of the first galleries my boys visited. I know I‘ve done something right raising them because the first thing they ask about when we travel ( after if there‘s soccer on) is what galleries/museums there are and then what exhibits are on 2mo

TheBookHippie @willaful We have to hire very tight security. It‘s quite dangerous yet.. so we do have many events all month but only one in a public space and we can‘t really advertise most things. People are so F U N..😵‍💫 2mo
willaful @TheBookHippie Grrrrr. 🤬 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick My town reluctantly does a Pride event. They hold it in a parking lot adjacent to a "park" that's mostly mulched flower beds and some tables & chairs. They don't advertise it like they do their other events. It's frustrating. We're allies, so we like to roll through to show support, but this year, it was like someone decided to just let people do showtune karaoke on stage and called it the entertainment. Fewer people attend each year. 1mo

peanutnine Enjoying this so far! I like her relationship with Joan and how they seem to really respect and understand each other more than most grandparent/child dynamics 2mo
Deblovestoread I‘m enjoying it so far. Looking forward to seeing how it unfolds. 2mo
willaful It's kind of fascinating how different Aria's life is from Lily's. I think I'm less interested because I know about being a young adult now? But the sense of place is very good.

I'm curious whether there will be any kind of resolution over what was done to her. Women wind up the villains even when they were the victims. 🤬
2mo
Sargar114 I‘m enjoying the story, don‘t love the narrator in the audiobook so I fear I‘m missing a bit. 2mo
mollyrotondo I‘m liking this one. I loved Telegraph Club because it was historical fiction whereas this one is more contemporary. Catsandbooks I'm enjoying it so far! 🌈 2mo

Pink Saturday-Pink Saturday is a street partyheld the Saturday night before San Francisco Pride (Gay Pride Day) in San Francisco's Castro district. It coincides with the annual Dyke March in San Francisco

kspenmoll I loved the scene where Aria dressed like she was visiting the Vineyard because she had no idea what to wear to a dyke march. It was great to see that once she let herself go & got into the march that she forgot about her faux pas. 2mo
mcctrish @kspenmoll yes! And the comments about her shoes 🤣 2mo
vlwelser I thought it was cute she was worried about her outfit and the girls were just like can you walk around in those shoes? 2mo
See All 15 Comments
IndoorDame @vlwelser @mcctrish the shoes were my first thought when she was obsessing about her clothes! I mean even if you‘ve never been to a Pride type event, can you imagine wearing shoes like that to any protest, parade, music festival…? 2mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame I thought that too but then the shoes I‘ve seen 😅🤣 I‘m in converse, per usual. 2mo
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤣 made me giggle! 2mo
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie true, some people are WAY more dedicated to pulling off the perfect look than I‘ll ever be 😅🤣 2mo
AmyG Ha! Forget pride. I know women who wear heels to the most ridiculous places. 2mo
Librarybelle Yes, @IndoorDame …wedges and heels are not ideal for any party! 😂 But, this is a whole new experience for Aria, so I give her props for trying to blend in. 2mo
willaful @IndoorDame Oh, if she were a drag queen, it would be completely appropriate! Style is everything. :-) There were full furry costumes at our Pride today, I can't even imagine how hot they were... 2mo
mollyrotondo This is my problem always: what do I wear?!! 😆 I understand her struggle. 2mo
DebinHawaii I agree! I never know what to wear but always flats & comfortable shoes! I can‘t even walk a block in heels! 👠🚫 2mo
Read4life You know it, @willaful 😂 The drag queen that ran Drag Bingo was a regular at the bookstore. She‘d tell me to embrace my height (I‘m 6‘). We were like Beauty and the BLAH! 😂😂 2mo

Dyke March-A dyke march is a lesbian visibility and protest march, much like the original Gay Pride parades and gay rights demonstrations. The main purpose of a dyke march is the encouragement of activism within the lesbian and sapphic community. Dyke marches commonly take place the Friday or Saturday before LGBT pride parades.

vlwelser I love this. I've never been to a dyke march. Pride parades are amazing. 2mo

Gay marriage -In a landmark decision issued on June 27, 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that Section 3 of DOMA is unconstitutional and that the federal government cannot discriminate against married lesbian and gay couples for the purposes of determining federal benefits and protections.

kspenmoll Worried with the biased Supreme Court that too could change. 2mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Terrified as well. 2mo
mcctrish I was thinking about random stuff today - Pride month means a significant part of the student body will skip classes due to religious differences - if one believes in God, and that God put us here, one can‘t really say that an omnipotent being made mistakes can they? If we are here, we are meant to be? Also religious texts were written by men after being oral stories for ages and ages so how much credence should be given to them. 2mo
See All 45 Comments
TheBookHippie @mcctrish EXACTLY THIS.. especially that LAST PART! 2mo
vlwelser Biology is science. Religion is man made. I think that's where people get confused sometimes. It seems like we should be past the point where we want to repopulate the earth with acolytes. Birth control and abortion and gay marriage seem like the future we should be promoting. 2mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish @vlwelser @TheBookHippie frustratingly, in my experience, arguments based in logic don‘t work on people of faith, you have to appeal to something that resonates with their core beliefs, and it‘s really hard to do that because outsiders don‘t usually understand them well enough 2mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame this has been my frustrating experience and I do try to explain it in their vernacular of faith when I‘m able. 😵‍💫 2mo
kspenmoll @vlwelser Totally agree!!! 2mo
Librarybelle I was wondering about that too, @kspenmoll . 2mo
AmyG I am fearful, too. Many could lose so much. @IndoorDame I agree. Logic and religion don‘t always work. And some twist their religion to work in their favor…of the beliefs they want to have. I will never understand any of it. First be a good, kind, respectful person. The rest is not my business. 2mo
Karisa @mcctrish @IndoorDame It‘s like many people have become more conservative and less tolerant lately. Instead of moving forward, we move back due to a small but powerful group. Can‘t take any rights for granted 🥺 2mo
mcctrish @vlwelser absolutely and why is it so hard to believe in science 2mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame faith in something that doesn‘t physically exist 🤯 but they can belong to 2mo
mcctrish @Karisa I find myself becoming more intolerant of the intolerance and I know it‘s not the kids fault, they listen to their parents ( I‘m talking about immigrants and not entrenched Bible thumpers here for a millenia) . But they came here for a reason(s) and I know there is trauma tied into it but for FFS look around- you get to be here so do the other people, sexuality is not contagious 2mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish I understand that faith helps a lot of people and that you can take it to a beautiful place, but history proves over and over that it‘s so easy for that to tip over into fanaticism, I just can‘t imagine it‘s worth the damage it causes if we don‘t find a way to limit it for ourselves 2mo
IndoorDame @Karisa yes, much of the world is on a very frightening trajectory right now with human rights being lost and threatened at an alarming rate! 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish the religiosity of people makes me 🤪😵‍💫 I just cannot. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa Fear hate intolerance … the pillars of religion 😵‍💫 2mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie It seems so lately… All about control and power 2mo
mcctrish @TheBookHippie what we don‘t understand scares us and what scares us must be put to death 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Ever grateful my grandma taught me eternal mystery it‘s Mystery and we are to question everything always, and just love people. When someone died she‘d say well now they know the secret and they have new mysteries to discover. There are no absolutes. It was calming to me. 2mo
mollyrotondo Very afraid for our future in this country. I don‘t know how we get back to the way things were in 2013 when this decision was announced. It takes so long to see positive progress like this and if we take 10 steps back how much longer will it take us to just reach 2013 standards again? Progress seems so short lived. 2mo
Sargar114 @IndoorDame I just listened to a podcast about this exact topic! Liberals will never win the arguments against conservative values when they‘re argument is based in liberal values. It really made me think about how we all communicate. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Sargar114 Mr BookHippie just asks questions… and eventually they can‘t answer or don‘t like what they‘d answer and some have even come back and asked him why he didn‘t tell them what to think. He had one coworker come apologise later… so odd. 2mo
Catsandbooks So terrified of the state of this country and the world. So very nervous about the election in the fall. We're all just human beings trying to do our best and live our lives. Why do people hurt others just because they're different? 2mo
TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks People love power and control … and they love hate. I remember reading this after Roe got overturned. It‘s accurate of “Christians”⬇️ 2mo
TheBookHippie That joy you're feeling from Roe v. Wade getting overturned isn't because God has worked. What you're feeling is a perverted and disgusting sense of satisfaction, not because you've "saved lives", but because were able to exert control over other people. You're feeling powerful and vindicated because you didn't want someone to do something and acted YOUR will on them. Your joy isn't about God; it's about making yourself feel just. 2mo
Catsandbooks @TheBookHippie unfortunately you're absolutely right 2mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie 💯 Lately I just can‘t with some people—the hate, fear, narrow-minds, etc. 🤬 I go back Thursday to visit family in Oregon before a work conference & while most of my siblings & their families aren‘t super religious/conservative a few are & I‘m not feeling ready for that! 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 I FEEEL THAT… you should read my ultra religious birthday cards … 🫣🤪🤢🤮🤬 from some family members … just NO. I find the “ Well I did talk to the Divine today and SHE said….” Stops them in their tracks… 👀 otherwise I just say OF COURSE you‘re right… 🤣😳🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Hah! I will try that! 😆 2mo
Read4life I think it‘s important to recognize: 1. Not all non-religious people are kind & accepting just like 2. Not all religious people are close minded & intolerant. It should not matter what my sexuality, gender, religious/spiritual beliefs, age or weight/body type are. Why are kindness & compassion so hard to come by? The world is broken & I won‘t judge anyone for how they find peace & calm. I‘m trying to learn more from NaturaLitsy to grow personally. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Read4life it‘s why “Christian‘s” is in quotation marks. If your religion controls another‘s right to exist or control one‘s own body, it‘s a problem, and a cult-whether you personally believe it or not. I absolutely agree and believe in personal spirituality and faith for oneself. The minute you try to force your beliefs on someone else or think yours is better or the only one is where I have a problem. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Read4life and church and state are seperate. We don‘t live in a Theocracy. 2mo
Read4life I agree with you. I wasn‘t offended at all by any comments. I was just sharing like everyone else. I agree that many “Christians” force their beliefs on others and look to control others. I wish everyone could be respectful of their fellow humans and learn from each other. I am new to meditation and also embracing nature and its healing properties. I just don‘t understand people who are threatened by differences ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
Read4life I learn from people on here daily. I‘m not oblivious to the horrific treatment & trauma people experience. As a woman in an interracial marriage, I have experienced the looks & comments but I know it‘s nothing compared to what others have experienced. It‘s terrifying and heartbreaking to see people denied their rights, respect & acceptance. Love is Love. I hope I didn‘t offend as it was not my intention. 💙 2mo
PageShifter I think this tagged book could be interesting for many. Have you read it? 2mo
TheBookHippie @PageShifter not yet it‘s on my list!! 2mo
TheBookHippie @Read4life I love Judaism with my whole heart, that being said I‘m more spiritual and meditate and nature focus as rule. Also I sleep with a Protestant 🫣🤣 so I‘m use to nuance. I think what works for self is such a gift. I‘ve never met a kind Christian in my life and I went to parochial school 😵‍💫🤯😝🤷🏻‍♀️ but I have experienced it on Litsy. But I have also endured massive hatred. I too wish people would just be nice. ♥️ 2mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This one step forward, ten steps back thing makes me feel stabby. Only doctors should have any say in medical treatments. Individuals should be able to love who they want to love. If you don't understand, ask questions. Some Christians hate gays & abortions. I believe George Carlin said it best, but "who has less abortions than gay people?!" I won't continue my diatribe here because we're all largely in the same camp. 1mo

Safeway
Cosmo Shampoo
Is Grandma Joan ok..
The gardener
A date?
Mixed feelings..

In the studio with her grandfather and his tapes and papers -Lovely

kspenmoll It struck me as quite odd that she responded to a “ pick up” in Safeway despite the fact that she recognized her grandmother‘s gardener & felt attracted to her. She knew absolutely nothing about these young women. Love the connection/love & scientific she is seeking by listening to her grandfather‘s tapes & (edited) 2mo
mcctrish Safeway brings me back ❤️ as does Cosmopolitan 🤣 it‘s a western chain in 🇨🇦 I shopped there in Uni and my parents had an account because the cottage was north of Winnipeg which I used when we travelled in the US to get the sale prices ( we camped a lot when our boys were young) I am slightly off put by the ‘knowing‘ glances between the ‘friends‘ re: Aria 2mo
vlwelser I like this character Steph a great deal so far. The struggle with the attraction seems legit for that age group also. 2mo

IndoorDame I hope Joan is okay! 🤞🏼 Aria is being painted as graceful and mature in scenes like watching her grandfather‘s tapes, and as blundering and oblivious around her new friends. Maybe because they‘re all older? Maybe because discovering your sexuality feels like that for some people? 2mo
Karisa Love the grandfather shared interest and family photos. The instant new friends dynamic does feel a little off though. However Aria is in desperate need of friends and they are nice. I just get a little off put that the message seems to be she is becoming a different sexuality because of their influence… It seems like it‘d be more realistic if she had noticed some feelings before? 2mo
Librarybelle Joan sounds like a delight, but it is worrisome to see memory lapses. The scene with Lisa, Mel and Steph seemed a little off. It was kind of abrupt. Though, one thing…Lisa seemed to sense that Aria was looking at Steph as if she may be interested in her. Maybe in some ways Mel saw the same thing. But, Lisa‘s grab for Steph‘s hand was a power play move. Hmmm…I can see drama in our reading future! 2mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa She may have and not realised or is now attracted to someone and she‘s shocked intrigued and a bit confused -like OH this is attraction what I had before not so much … @IndoorDame I assume she‘s discovering it as well. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Librarybelle DRAMA DRAMA was my thought!!! 2mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish omg Cosmo reading 🤣🤣🤣 gosh I should pick one up. It‘s been decades. 2mo
AmyG @Librarybelle Oh, there will be drama. And I agree…this all happened so fast. I barely remember being 18 so who knows? 🤣 2mo
Librarybelle @AmyG 😂 18 does feel awhile ago…who knows, indeed! 2mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I‘ve very vague memories 😅 @Librarybelle 2mo
peanutnine The instant friendship did seem a bit off. I can understand Steph not minding getting to know her better since she's heard about her from Joan, but Mel seems to come on so strong. She gives me bad vibes almost like she's hoping for drama 2mo
Deblovestoread Love Aria discovering her grandfather through their shared interest and learning who Joan was as a young woman. The introduction to Steph, Mel and Lisa felt really rushed to me but as I thought about it I decided I didn‘t need additional chapters of chance meetings or chats with Steph at Joan‘s to get to the same place. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
willaful @mcctrish That reminded me of Last Night at the Telegraph Club, though it didn't freak me out, since Aria is less naive and has much more autonomy. I think they've all picked up on her interest in Steph. 2mo
TheBookHippie @willaful YES!!! I‘m not worried about these girls. 2mo
willaful @TheBookHippie yes, thank goodness for that. I spent so much of LNatTC in sheer mom terror. 😓 2mo
mollyrotondo @Deblovestoread I agree that I didn‘t need chance encounters for us to get to the same place in the friendship. I‘d rather the story move. 2mo
mollyrotondo I didn‘t find their quick friendship abrupt or find it odd that Aria would be discovering something new about her sexuality. Sometimes you don‘t know things about yourself until you are presented with something. And I really really liked that Aria knows she‘s not attracted to Mel and stopped any advances from her. I like it all so far. Makes sense for young people. 2mo
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I like her. It‘s the right age to figure out who you really are. Some growth behind you and before you. 2mo
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie definitely it‘s the exact right age. Some people learn so much more about themselves when they go to college and get out of the towns they grew up in. Aria is starting that by visiting her grandmother before college. Makes total sense. 2mo
Sargar114 @willaful good point about the similarities in books. I‘m only struggling with her because I‘m doing audio and I don‘t love the voice the narrator uses for her. I imagine I‘d like it better reading it. 2mo
Catsandbooks I love how she gets to learn more about her grandparents. I like Steph and her friends seem nice. Lisa will be trouble though lol 2mo
DebinHawaii Safeway (shopped there forever & it‘s my closest grocery store here) & Cosmo - so many years reading it & especially doing the monthly quiz! 😆 The friendships did seem quick & it will be interesting to see how it all works out. I feel like Mel will be okay with friendship. Lisa will definitely be the issue & drama. 😬 2mo
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I feel such a strong need to buy a Cosmo and take the quiz … 2mo
julieclair There is drama ahead for sure. It feels like Aria has been dropped into the middle of a very complicated friends/lovers network with a lot of history. 2mo
PageShifter I am curious to know more about the past of Lisa & Steph. They seem to have problems but why? 2mo
