The Grownup
The Grownup: A Story by the Author of Gone Girl | Gillian Flynn
Gillian Flynns Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standaloneA canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susans terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susans teenage stepson, doesnt help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it. The Grownup, which originally appeared as What Do You Do? in George R. R. Martins Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the worlds most original and skilled voices in fiction. From the Hardcover edition.

I try to read at least one horror type book in October every year. It isn‘t a genre that I love but have found some gems on occasion. Thought I would give this one a try. It has been awhile since I read a “ghost” story.

I‘m not so sure about the ending...

This short story had me gripped for about the first half. An “aura reader,” psychic, and professional at hand jobs (yes literally) has met potentially her match.

A woman begs her to help with her son who is simply evil. Something is really off at home... but could there be more hidden beneath the surface?

That ending left me wanting much more closure. Wish it could have lived up to the rest of the book.

I've never read Gillian Flynn before but I found this at a used book sale and couldn't resist the looks of it. It started off a bit racy, talking about hand jobs but then things got creepy. I liked that the are a few different ways the story go so I was left guessing up to the end. For me it was a nice intro to her work.

Listened to this on Overdrive because 1) I needed something new and 2) Julia Whelan narrates & I almost stopped in the middle because parts are so. Freaking. Scary. But glad I pushed through. Genuinely unsettling, but that's Flynn for you. (May be too much sexual content for some but you'll be able to tell that from the very first line.)

A twisty psychological thriller with (possibly) supernatural elements.

The unnamed narrator is a masseuse/psychic in a shop where where men come for “happy endings” and women come for psychic readings. When a wealthy client shares concerns about her creepy stepson and a house that is possibly haunted, the narrator sees an opportunity. She offers to cleanse the house, even though she doesn‘t actually believe in spirits.

So. Many. Twists.

I'm not a fan of thrillers, so this is the first book I've read by Gillian Flynn. I enjoyed it, and it was nice to take a break with a shorter book while I work my way through The Final Empire. I'm a huge fan of unreliable narrators, and I keep thinking through the ending trying to decide what really happened.

[Continued in comments]

sebrittainclark This was my second #newyearwhodis read from @LouBeth's list. I'm not sure I'll manage a 3rd in January, but I've enjoyed the ones I've read so far so much that I'll probably keep working through the list throughout the rest of the year.

"A young woman is making a living faking it as a cut-price psychic (with some illegal soft-core sex work on the side). She makes a decent wage mostly by telling people what they want to hear. But then she meets Susan Burke. Susan moved to the city one year ago with her husband & 15-year-old stepson Miles. They live in a modern Victorian house called Carterhook Manor. Susan is convinced that some malevolent spirit is inhabiting their home."

vkois88 This book has one of the #BiggestPlotTwist I've read. It's so dark and random. Sometimes when reading Flynn's book, I'm left to wonder just how/why she is capable of coming up with such evil characters, and the gruesome acts they perform 😂 #ANewChapter @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 11mo

This is a hard book to rate. It had the trappings of Flynn‘s classic twists and turns, but I almost feel like its length and lack of a real ending held it back from being a stronger story. It‘s almost as if this short story would have been better had it not been so short after all. Then again, had it gone on aimlessly, the experience might have been more frustrating.

Okay so everybody loves Gillian Flynn stories. This is a very short story but has really funny aspects but the same thriller vibes her other books have. Great for a short car ride. Wish it was made into a chapter book but I‘ll take what I can get from Mrs .Flynn.

She just tries too hard to “surprise” the reader. One twist? Great! Two twists? You‘d better be an amazing writer (think: Sarah Waters). Three twists? Venturing into sad and pathetic territory. On the plus side, it‘s an Amazon Short so you don‘t feel cheated on the time investment. Read at your own risk.

Very fast read; it‘s more a short story than a novel which I didn‘t recognize when I borrowed the eBook. The ending was kind of disappointing, but I guess it leaves it up to the reader to decide. BUT I‘m not a cliffhanger gal, I like to know exactly how a story ends 🤷🏽‍♀️

This was perfectly creepy. An audiobook that is only about an hour long it was a great accompaniment on my evening walks. The unnamed narrator works as a psychic/(among other things) and encounters a client who has her believing her own intuition. Kept me guessing and I didn‘t mind the ambiguity...won‘t say more to avoid spoilers.
