Savannah Cade is a low-level editor at Pennington Publishing, a prestigious publisher producing only the highest of highbrow titles. And while editing the latest edition of The Anthology of Medieval Didactic Poetry may be her day job, she has two secrets shes hiding. One: Shes writing a romance novel. Two: Shes discovered the Book Nooka secret room in the publishing house where she finds inspiration for her lowbrow hobby. After leaving her manuscript behind one afternoon, she returns to the nook only to discover someone has written notes in the margins. Savannahs first response to the criticism is defensive, but events transpire that force her to admit that she needs the help of this shadowy editor after all. As the notes take a turn for the romantic, and as Savannahs madcap life gets more complicated than ever, she uses the process of elimination to identify her mysterious editoronly to discover that what she truly wants and what she should want just might not be the same. A soft pick, this one was fun but not particularly memorable. The MC works for a small publisher that focuses on serious, educational books, but is secretly writing a romance novel that she wants published. Through a series of events, someone else finds her manuscript and starts leaving editorial notes that actually are helpful, and soon she is working with her mystery editor. It's a romcom, so it's pretty obvious who the mystery editor is. I was⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) hoping for more of the back and forth notes, but we don't actually get a lot of them, and a lot of the time it's just the MC summarizing what they shared. This was fun if you like this kind of story, but nothing outstanding. Also, spoiler below as I found part of the ending to be a bit unrealistic, which brought down some of my overall enjoyment of the book.

#Pantone2022 @Clwojick
#RoaringWolf - Yellow (June) @Roary47 @Littlewolf1
4w
TheAromaofBooks In the end, the publisher's owner sells out to a larger publishing house. It just seemed really unlikely that that meant no one was going to get fired, but they acted like this was a 100% happy ending where not only would everyone keep their jobs, but they could even move to the “fun“ areas of publishing if they wanted to. I didn't quite buy the “big happy family“ ending, despite the reassuring epilogue 😂 4w

So instead of some checkmarks, I just thought I would post a pic of the pile of books read this week for my #BookReport 😂 I finished the Lunar Chronicles, including the two graphic novels and all the short stories in Stars Above - absolutely LOVED this series!! The Nora Roberts book included two novels she wrote in the early 80s that were pretty lame but checked off two years for #19822022 so there's that LOL The tagged book was fun but ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) somewhat forgettable. Definitely have some book reviews coming!!!

Also pictures of the amazing Kitch-Iti-Kipi spring. The pictures do not do it justice; it was SO magical. We got there early in the morning and were the only ones there so we just floated about watching fish in the incredibly clear water forever.

However, glad to be home - so many good things happening here - loads of gardening to catch up on!!!

TheAromaofBooks @Kayla.Adriena - We went there as well!!! I bet it's amazing in the winter! I think it would be fun to spend a winter someplace where they get “real“ snow for the whole season, although I'm not sure I would want to LIVE someplace where they get real snow forever 😂 1mo
Bookzombie Great week and beautiful photos! 1mo
AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH I went to Kitch-iti-kipi last fall. It was super cool, I know for sure that pictures don't do it justice. Are you from Michigan? Just wondering, since I am...also it feels like I may have asked you this before. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH - I'm actually in Ohio, southeast of Columbus, so we had about a 10hr drive to where we stayed south of Munising in the UP. I really love northern Michigan - I've also been along the west coast around Traverse City and it was gorgeous as well. Are you somewhere in the mitten part of the state? 4w
AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH @TheAromaofBooks Yes, I'm near Grand Rapids. 4w

I need a fun, light listen to offset the Hungarian revolution, 1960s Congo and the murder of the General Secretary of the UN, and a graphic novel on tyranny. I do this to myself. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

This listen is fun and not at all serious! ❤️

So if you dated someone for 8 years, broke up, and he was engaged to your younger sister within 3 months, and your parents told you to be supportive, you‘d be living our heroines life. The publisher she works for doesn‘t do “genre” and she wants to write romance novels. She‘s also kind of jaded about relationships right now. Predictable, but also sweet, fun, and hopeful. Enjoyable, lighthearted read overall with some self discovery and growth.

Mehso-so

Borderline pan for me, but I know this will appeal to some readers so going to leave it as a so-so. The premise was cute (romance develops through editing notes in the margins of a manuscript) , but the execution just wasn‘t fully there. I don‘t believe the MC‘s age is ever given, but she seemed immature and unprofessional given her work position and life situation. The slow burn romance is not effective enough to make the ending satisfying.

JoyBlue I was waffling on so-so or pan as well, but I wasn't as generous as you in the end. 😉 4w

Some fun for tonight:book editor for small niche publishing house, wannabe Romance author, interacts through notations “between the margins”of her manuscript, with a mysterious, shadowy, editor. Delightful with comical moments so far.

I can‘t resist a book about books even though I‘m not going to love every story I get my hands on. This HEA ending was obvious up front but still fun to read the story unfold. One issue for me though was inconsequential filler characters superfluous to the story. ↓

marleed In an earlier post utilizing a grandchild in for the background of my pic was the twin sister to this little guy, so it was nice to read a book where I could give Gavan some equal time! 3mo

I LOVED this. Start to finish, didn‘t want to put it down. All the warm fuzzy feelings alongside substance and originality. Lovable and believable characters. I also think the author had such clever ways of breaking the fourth wall! It‘s something I‘ve seen other authors try but she actually succeeded 😍

Cute closed door rom-com. You've Got Mail (One of my favorite movies) meets Attachments (Rainbow Rowell, one of my favorite authors) so this one was a sure bet, a great palate cleanser among heavier reading. Bonus points for having a book on the cover An Expand Your Horizons task ❣️

This isn't a revolutionary story - nothing ultra-special happens, but it's cute, delightful, romantic. Just Savannah seems like a doormat... Nevertheless the book is enjoyable well enough.

Finished this lovely book this weekend. It‘s a great story about an aspiring romance writer who edits for a strictly non-fiction small publishing house. The romance is light, but believable. My favorite part is the hidden room with all the bookshelves. I would love something like that!

I was sucked into this book. None of the things I needed to get done today were done. I lost track of time while reading. I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. I became emotionally invested in these characters. I don't know when it happened because when I started the book, I wasn't too sure about them. I didn't quite believe that they would work together. But, by the end, I was desperate to see them finally figure everything out.

I love romcoms. And Melissa Ferguson proves once again that she is a queen in this genre with her newest book. The author skillfully combines delightful banter and sweet enchanting romance through the written word with the chaotic, almost circus-like comic daily happenings at a small publishing company. It‘s truly a perfect romcom to curl up with on a cold, lazy Saturday morning.

I received the book from the publisher and opinions are my own.

In not-knowing land, there was still hope. There was still a chance that things would work out for me. In knowing land though -- if I step into the Land of the Know -- I'm going to know without question. And if the answer isn't what I want, I can't strap hope back onto my back for safe keeping. No, hope is for those who stay in the Land of the Not-Know.

This was the perfect light read I needed in between serious books. I was rooting for the main character right from the start, and she did not disappoint. This book just had so much I really like reading about: books; writing; and romance without too much drama manufactured for it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thank you for the e-arc, Netgalley and Thomas Nelson -- FICTION!

I. Adored. This. Book. Oh my goodness, I smiled through all 300+ pages and was sad to have it end. Savannah works for a small publishing house (which is literally located in an old Victorian house) in Nashville and dreams of having her romance novel published. Will is the new VP of her division (from NYC) and happens to be the son of the CEO (who is dead set against mainstream titles, especially romance). The premise here involves a secret room,🔻

robinb mistaken identities, post-it notes (and margins), overachievers, family expectations and a love story that is one of the sweetest and most endearing that I‘ve read in a long time. It‘s funny, poignant, the leads are both cheer-worthy and a pleasure to watch (I especially loved Savannah and consider her my new book bff), and there is not a swear word in sight (or sex, for that matter). 🔻 5mo
robinb Yes, you read that right…no sex in a modern romance. It wasn‘t needed and was refreshing without it. If you‘re looking for a true rom-com and something fun and lovable…this one fits the bill (at least for me). 5/5⭐️ 5mo

robinb @marleed I really loved it! 5mo
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I've looked at her backlist (I think just two other books?) and have stacked those! 5mo
TheAromaofBooks My only real issue with The Dating Charade was that a lot of the book was really serious, which was handled really well, but it made the fluffy romcom parts feel a little jarring. The aspects about foster care and adoption were really thoughtful, but I think the book would have read more evenly if she had kept her focus there instead of trying to incorporate a lot of romantic shenanigans, if that makes sense haha 5mo
robinb @TheAromaofBooks There were a couple of more serious issues in this one too but nothing really heavy. I liked the way she blended those into the growth of the romance/growth of the leads. I also liked the interesting tidbits of behind-the-scenes of a publishing house. 5mo
BennettBookworm I couldn‘t agree more! So perfect! 3mo

2.5 STARS - This book was a miss for me. Not enough romance (extremely clean romance), predictable and lackluster plot. It will appeal to other readers I'm sure, but it was a miss for me.

This was a cute, very slow burn romance. Savannah is an editor at a publishing house that absolutely does not deal with commercial fiction, so when her brand new publisher, William Pennington, sees the first page of her secret romance manuscript she's certain she's about to be fired. Instead she finds a secret editor at the company who helps her polish her manuscript in secret all while the two get closer together over their notes.

Cute! I was constantly worried something horribly contrived was going to throw a wrench into the budding relationship, but was very pleasantly surprised that didn‘t occur; we‘re there hiccups? Yes, but not in a Uber drama kind of way and that‘s why I so enjoyed this book.
