Always, in December
Always, in December: A Novel | Emily Stone
103 posts | 48 read | 1 reading | 24 to read
A chance encounter during the holiday season brings two people together as quickly as it tears them apart--until fate intervenes again (and again) in this romantic debut novel in the tradition of One Day in December. Every December, Josie posts a letter from her home in London to the parents she lost on Christmas night many years ago. Each year, she writes the same three words: Missing you, always. But this year, her annual trip to the postbox is enlivened by a bicycle collision with a handsome stranger--a stranger that she apologizes to by taking him out for a drink. Josie always thought she was the only one who avoided the Christmas season, but this year, Max has his own reasons for doing the same. As coincidence causes them to spend the holiday together, Josie thinks this might be the start of something new--only for him to disappear without saying goodbye. Over the course of the next year, they continue to bump into each other in places they'd never expect, from New York City to Edinburgh, and it turns out there's more to Max than Josie thought. But will fate bring them together, or will it tear them apart? A devastatingly romantic, life-affirming love story, Always, in December will stay with readers long after they've finished the last page.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Last holiday themed book of the year.

TLuvs A beautifully written realistic/contemporary fiction! Love, family, friends, loss, career, dreams... exactly what life does and doesn't give to people. I listened on audiobook and the narrator did fantastic! 1y
TLuvs I have read both books by this author and will absolutely read all that she continues to write! 1y

I haven't been reading much this year. My great #litsypenpal has come to the rescue with some perfect holiday goodies. Books on point per usual, nutcracker salt n‘ pepper shakers (which I used for Christmas dinner but forgot to fill them), fun lip balms that I so desperately need, goodies for the pup, nutcracker notepad, and the best thing. It's a reading shawl! I love it all, @Litlady thank you so much!!!!Merry Christmas🎄and Happy New Year all!

I was looking forward to another Christmas rom-com, & while this starts off in the direction with Josie meeting Max by chance as the perfect distraction from a dreaded anniversary & the recent bad news on both the career and her relationship, but as the year progresses, & their chance encounters continue, Max‘s own secret changes the holiday tone into something my inner-Lurlene-McDaniel-obsessed-4th-grader approved of… but not much holiday spirit!

GondorGirl Okay, but my inner fourth grade is really intrigued now! 😅 1y
EclecticBookLover Oh wow, I read Lurlene McDaniel and I knew EXACTLY the direction this is heading in. I hope to finish it by the end of the year. I never read any of her books, but my friends did and we talked about them. 1y
TorieStorieS @GondorGirl Hahahaha! I hope you enjoy this then! I really did like the audio and was thoroughly hooked but I can see some feeling cheated out of something lighter! 1y
TorieStorieS @EclecticBookLover Hahahaha!! I remember forcing two of my friends to read her books and was shocked when they didn‘t immediately want to read all the rest of them like I did! I really had a different ending in mind for this one while listening so I understand its mixed reviews! 1y

While this one started with great potential, I feel like it spiraled downward quickly. It was not what I expected, and there were several things in the story that I think were written poorly. This is not a light, fun holiday read!

This book was not the fluffy light romcom I was expecting. There was some of that, but a much deeper range of emotions and challenges as well. I never read the book jacket comments before I start a book, as I am afraid of spoilers, so I really was unprepared. All in all, a good story and a worthwhile read, but there were a few too many coincidences in the plot to suit me. #SundayBuddyRead

TheBookHippie It was a BIG OY VEY for me........ So grateful to have you along for the adventure!! HA. 1y

Giving this book a pick because the writing was good & I was very vested in the outcome even though I saw some things coming early on & there was an abrupt plot jump I didn‘t like. It‘s more personal growth than holiday romance & explores themes of loss/grief (early on we learn the MC lost her parents at a young age at Christmas) so if that triggers you, especially during the holidays or you want something light & fun, I wouldn‘t choose this one.

DebinHawaii Thanks to @TheBookHippie for the always great #SundayBuddyRead discussions. 🤗 1y

Our first year in #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD we skipped December 👀 these are what we have read to date!

My favourite is Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk!

Andrew65 Ooh that‘s a tough call, for me a tie between Lillian Boxfish and One Day in December. 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 we had such lovely times with both!!! 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie We did, I‘ve actually read Lillian Boxfish twice I loved it so much and Josie Silver has become a favourite author. Don‘t hold the same memories but I did also love The Twelve Dates of Christmas and We Met in December. 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I agree I‘ve read Lillian 3 times now! Ha. Josie was such a nice find. The others also enjoyable this one OY VEY JUST NO. 1y

That‘s a wrap for 2022!! I cannot explain in words how much Sundays mean to me, even when I throw the book multiple times!! I started with me and one person reading a BOTM book together in early fall of 2017 and then we went big the next month and formed this!!! As we are now in our 6th year I am cherishing it even more!! So grateful.

On to 2023 and I thank you for this journey of reading together !!

DebinHawaii Thank YOU! It truly is the best part of the week & weekend for me! You have turned me on to some of my favorite books & authors over the years & your discussion questions & side research are always the best. Happy Holidays to you! 🤗 (edited) 1y

Andrew65 Been missing for a lot of this year with life! But really great to be back with this one. Sometimes I struggle to get hold of the books, or in U.K. books overpriced for some of them.

Happy Hanukkah to you.

Part 5

Funeral thoughts?

Part 6

Africa and letter writing
Thoughts?

DebinHawaii I was happy his family reached out to her at the funeral & got choked up when his mom said it‘s “OUR loss.” 😥 I liked that Bia & her Aunt were there too—that Josie had a lot of support. (edited) 1y
DebinHawaii Forgot to comment on the letters. I did like how the tone of the letters changed for Josie & how you could tell she has grown & is proud of herself. I think whatever works for her—sending the letters is her ritual & I support that. 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I‘m grateful it showed us she‘s going to be okay, so to speak. 1y
See All 10 Comments
Andrew65 I did like the letters at the end, despite everything. I actually felt this was a nice thing to do.
Think I was still too upset and annoyed during the funeral to really take it in.
1y
AmyG I hope Josiemeets a fabulous guywho is truthful to her. 1y
mcctrish @DebinHawaii yes the change in tone of the letters was a nice light at the end of the tunnel 1y
megnews I did like his mom‘s response toward her and the fact that she finally stepped out on her own to take a chance and do something she‘d enjoy. 1y
vlwelser Glad she went to Africa. Good for her. 1y
julieclair I wasn‘t a fan of the letters at first, but the ending changed my mind. I decided they were a good practice after all. 1y

Any part you like? Any character? Is the book a pass because of the death? Would you recommend this without a warning ?

I like the London setting…… and Bia…. 👀

wanderinglynn While I did love the book, I wouldn‘t recommend it with warning. It hit me particularly hard because my dad had a brain tumor. Not the same but still, it hit home. 1y
KristiAhlers This one was a hard one but I‘m glad I read it if that makes sense. And I loved Bia. 1y
DebinHawaii Bia was great & her grandparents but I would warn people more that it‘s not a typical holiday romance. My best friend who I talk to every day is not a reader at all, but a Hallmark movie person. She likes it when I tell her about what we are reading for #SundayBuddyRead & tell her the plots of the books. She lost her husband unexpectedly 5-years ago Thanksgiving & I had to tell her I thought this was going end badly & it wasn‘t for her. 😥 1y

DebinHawaii But also glad I read it too @wanderinglynn @KristiAhlers 1y
TheBookHippie @wanderinglynn I am so sorry my sister died age 5 brain stem brain tumor I was 7. My good friend had brain aneurysm at Christmas and thankfully survived after being in coma several weeks… anyway love to you I feel the same. This was a bit much 👀. 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Awe. Hugs to her. I do similar with my friend who has a long cancer that is slowly shortening her life. I told her I think this ends badly. I am glad I read it too weirdly. 1y
DebinHawaii @wanderinglynn I can totally see how it would hit home for you. 💜 1y
wanderinglynn Thanks @TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii 🤍 light & love to you both. 1y
DebinHawaii Also, I got a little notice from Libby that 11 people are waiting for the library e-book & I want to warn them! 😆😓 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I handed the book off with a warning!!! 1y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn Sorry to hear that. It hit me too, with my dad‘s sudden death. Woken early one morning by my brother, dad being taken on a stretcher into an ambulance. Massive stroke and died in the middle of the night with no warning, he was only 42. 1y
Andrew65 I wouldn‘t recommend this at all, but if someone was going to pick it up I might need to say it wasn‘t a typical romance and possibly better ones out there. 1y
AmyG I liked Josie. I wouldn‘t recommend this book to anyone. 1y
wanderinglynn @Andrew65 no matter what the circumstances, with or without warning, it‘s never easy 🤍 1y
mcctrish I‘m with @AmyG re:not recommending and @DebinHawaii with Bia and the grandparents. Actually all the background characters and Edinburgh. I think December is just too much for this kind of read - year end, short days, holidays ( especially when beloved friends and family are missing) on top of all the regular daily things. I‘m running on fumes by this point in the year, wearing a mask at school is the only reason I‘m not sick in bed 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I‘m with you I‘m always masked when I leave the house. 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish as Andrew said our other years produced better books!!! 1y
mcctrish You can‘t get rid of me this easily 🤣🤣 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Yep,I‘m always masked too! @mcctrish 1y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn That is so true. 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 😅😂😂♥️😘 1y
megnews I wouldn‘t recommend it. It‘s just way too far outside the parameters of a cozy Christmas read. 1y
TheBookHippie @megnews THE COVER IS SO DECEIVING ! 1y
vlwelser I recommended it and gave a tissue warning. My favorite part was the settings. This could have easily been a totally reasonable book. 1y
julieclair I loved the London and Edinburgh settings, and I thought Bia was great. So we‘re the grandparents. But I would not recommend this book. 1y
CoffeeNBooks I think if this has been written differently it would have been totally fine. I think the abruptness of Max's death and some of the other details thrown into the story were unnecessary. Wouldn't recommend it- there are books that are heavy, but they are worth it. This wasn't one of those. 1y
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks I feel it must be the author … she must be suffering grief or something? It‘s really abrupt. If you want to write that fine but don‘t market it in this genre, seriously misleading, and I‘m afraid could even harm. 1y
CoffeeNBooks @TheBookHippie Yes, I absolutely agree. 1y

SOOOO should this be marketed Christmas romance ?

Favorite Christmas romance ?
(Some folks may need it after this…)

KristiAhlers I‘m Going to go with no personally. This is really a heavy topic and I think it actually take away a little from it if people thing they‘re going into a feel good holiday story. But that‘s just my two cents. 1y
wanderinglynn I would agree @KristiAhlers - I picked this book up because I thought it was a typical holiday romance. 1y
See All 26 Comments
DebinHawaii There was romance but not enough & I want my holiday romances to be all tied up pretty like a present. The subject was heavy although the hints that it wouldn‘t end with a HEA were there for me, I feel like it needed more warning. Trying to think of a favorite. I just finished this one yesterday & really enjoyed it: 1y
KristiAhlers @wanderinglynn right? I felt that this is a hard enough time for some people who look to reading as an escape. This isn‘t that book. 1y
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers I agree!!! I did think it WAS a sappy read initially when I picked in 2021… 😅❄️♥️ @wanderinglynn @DebinHawaii 1y
Andrew65 @wanderinglynn Just finished that this morning and loved it. 1y
Andrew65 In no way should this be a Christmas romance, that just makes what happened see so much worse.

Read so many Christmas romances hard to choose 1 but will tag 2 or 3.

1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Thanks for these recs!!! Starting in Scottish highlands !!! 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 ALSO book needs TRIGGER WARNING. Gads. 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie This book is the book before Snowflakes and Secrets and also loved this, but they stand up well as isolated books. I love books set in Scotland and especially the highlands. 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Yes they do! 1y
AmyG Bah Humbug. 1y
mcctrish I‘m off to find Scottish Highlands. This is not a holiday romance. I agree, trigger warnings are needed. Between my husband‘s shit show family and the speeding downhill trajectory of December I need happier reads, bring back Last Summer at the Golden 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 thanks!!!! I‘ll do these for the week and as a cleanser 😅😵‍💫👀🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
wanderinglynn @Andrew65 yea, Eternity Springs is what a holiday romance story should be. And thanks for the recommendations – I‘m headed to the library now! 1y

Then the grandma has a heart attack and here‘s Max…
And Erin just a friend.
And THEN HE JUST DIES
He‘s been saying goodbye the whole time….
Thoughts?

DebinHawaii I knew it so him dying wasn‘t a shock—the back cover blurb comparing it to Me Withiut You, him looking pale, having secrets, the “did you tell her from Erin, but the abruptness of it was a surprise—although when they heard the commotion in the hall when they were with her grandmother, I went…” there goes Max!” Although I thought he would be in a room somewhere & there would be a goodbye & not just a letter! 🥺😤😠😡🤬 1y
KristiAhlers I so got Jojo Moyes vibes here. I‘m a heartbreaking NOOOO kinda way. And I agree @DebinHawaii I felt cheated by that form of goodbye. Like I said I was glad I read it but I wanted something more than that. I read it on my kindle so I didn‘t know the back had the comparison of Me Without You. 1y
Read4life I felt like he had something burdening him the whole time. Like @DebinHawaii when Erin started with “did you tell her?” I figured he was sick. When he had that horrible headache I knew it was bad & knew it was him involved in the emergency at the hospital. I was a bit shocked when he was gone without her seeing him again. I was also surprised the aunt knew. 1y
See All 36 Comments
DebinHawaii @KristiAhlers Yeah, I started with the library print book because my e-book hold wasn‘t in so all along I was expecting he was going to die but hoping not & yes, so cheated! 1y
DebinHawaii @Read4life Yes & her friend knew too & that bugged me. 1y
KristiAhlers @DebinHawaii totally understand that. I was finishing it last night as I‘m sick and was in bed all day. Head cold with this read is NOT a good look 😂 1y
DebinHawaii @KristiAhlers Same! About to take my second COVID test. Was up all night coughing. Hope you feel better soon! 🤧 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Exactly once I figured that I thought okay sappy love goodbye!!! 1y
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers I don‘t read that so I don‘t know but I do feel CHEATED! Ugh. 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii THAT BOTHERED ME TOO!!!! Ugh. 1y
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers OH NO not you too!!! Healing vibes to you!!! Rest hydrate all of us!!! 1y
KristiAhlers @TheBookHippie hubby just came back with a covid test and it‘s not that thank goodness! I never get sick. But the last few months have been stressful and I got rundown so this is kicking my backside. I‘m curled up with my water and my kindle and my dog and I‘m laying low. 1y
TheBookHippie @KristiAhlers Been there myself 😵‍💫. Hope it passes quickly!! 1y
Andrew65 @KristiAhlers That is bad timing 😳🤣 Hope you have a swift and speedy recovery. (edited) 1y
Andrew65 I hadn‘t read the blurb, never do as spoilt the book on more than one occasion in the past, and with audio didn‘t pick up on all the signs so was a total shock to me. Sorry just a big no as I said in the previous question. Not telling her … very bad. Letting others know but not her…..even worse. Dying as suddenly as that no closure, straight after her gran was just beyond shocking. Think this would stop me reading any other of her books. 1y
Andrew65 The shock was beyond belief and so stark. 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 ALLLLL OF THAT. No. Just NO. 1y
mcctrish Since these books are picked by our fearless leader, I never read the blurbs. I just read what is assigned and go with it. When max was ‘faint‘ at the gingerbread I thought “ah, he‘s not well” I thought it was a mental breakdown and meds. That ES had Josie finally come to grips with her parents death, make her contemplate her grandmothers and then kill of Max makes me hate this book. I almost didn‘t finish it. I‘m sorry everyone is not well 🤒☹️ 1y
AmyG Stupid book. 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I never read blurbs so I do not ruin it or have preconceived judgement…. This is marketed just horrifically !!!! I feel like we should go to book stores and put sticky notes on the cover of this one!!! Yikes! 1y
TheBookHippie @AmyG SERIOUSLY WTF?! 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Book sailed across room. 1y
Andrew65 @AmyG 👏👏👏 1y
mcctrish I think it would be a public service 📝 1y
megnews I was already aggravated for what felt like playing games by letting her think he and Erin were together. There‘s no good way or timing to tell someone this EXCEPT WHEN IT‘S TOO LATE! I agree the marketing is off. Not what you expect at Christmas time. (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish Seriously!!! 1y
TheBookHippie @megnews right?! UGH. So upset. 1y
vlwelser And then he just dies. This book was awful. But I also loved it. 1y
CoffeeAndABook I actually bailed early on when I was starting to get a bad, bad feeling. Being a cancer survivor myself I have a finely tuned alarm system. I can‘t read these books. I jumped to the back to confirm my suspicions and alas, it was confirmed. So glad I didn‘t get myself invested so I wasn‘t shocked or scared by the outcome. But I didn‘t like how the book is masked as harmless, slightly cheesy Christmas fun & then WHAMMY!! 🙀 who could have guessed? 1y
TheBookHippie @CoffeeAndABook seriously right?????? Bad bad marketing. 1y
CoffeeAndABook @TheBookHippie - bad marketing -> the worst! Should come with a trigger warning and a completely different get-up!! Feel like no-one in the marketing department even read it at all 🙈 1y
TheBookHippie @CoffeeAndABook FOR SURE!!! It was all wrong. We cannot be the only people who feel this way. It‘s very sad and actually harmful to some ! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
julieclair It‘s the fault of the cover illustration. It leads you to expect a predictable, maybe even slightly cheesy holiday romcom. Wrong! 1y
CoffeeNBooks I never read the blurbs, so I rarely have any idea what books are actually about, lol! When Max had a headache at the hospital, I really thought he was just leaving Josie without saying goodbye again. 😳 I agree @julieclair - I expected a romcom! I feel cheated. I didn't need this book in my life. (Not blaming you for picking it, though @TheBookHippie!! 😁) 1y

Also CLOSURE. Her friends hinting she needs it, for Max? Her parents, both?
Isn‘t closure different for everyone ?

Read4life I do think closure is different for everyone as is the amount of time it takes to get to a place where closure is a possibility. 1y
DebinHawaii Closure is different for each person but I could understand why her friends wanted it for her. 1y
Andrew65 Closure very much different for each individual, and the pace and route they need to find it. How do you have closure with an incident like this. There one moment, goes to see her gran and then he‘s dead straight away. That was beyond harsh by the author and don‘t think I can forgive her for that. Bad enough he didn‘t tell her but then to get him to die in such a shocking way. 😡😡😡 1y
See All 15 Comments
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Only excuse I can figure is she‘s working on her own trauma but GRACIOUS, do we all need to suffer?! 1y
mcctrish So imo this book sucks. Her parents dying so young left some big trauma for her. I really loved that she was finally in a place where she could be at home for Christmas and hear the stories that other people had of her parents. That was a gift she was finally ready to receive. That it took her Memo being ‘sick‘ made sense, a big jolt to get her out of her rut is totally understandable. But to have Max have incurable cancer and then an anuerysm? 1y
AmyG This storyline lost me. It was truly absurd. I‘m with @mcctrish …this book sucked. 1y
mcctrish @AmyG 👯‍♀️ 1y
vlwelser The author takes all of us down with her. Well played. 1y

CoffeeNBooks @Andrew65 Yeah, the writing of this just made me angry! 1y
CoffeeNBooks I feel like the author just threw a bunch of random traumatic circumstances into the story for no real reason. She could have gotten Josie to Africa so many different, HAPPY ways! 🙄 1y
Andrew65 @AmyG @mcctrish Totally agreed and even more so now been a few days since I finished reading it. 1y

DebinHawaii I wanted so badly for Josie to find her photography & have a purpose & a passion. Max saw her talent & I liked how he helped make things happen for her but I am still angry at him for telling everyone but her, his secret. (edited) 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Me too it was immature at best but mostly hurtful and mean in my opinion. Also very selfish. (edited) 1y
Andrew65 I‘m as mad as you too, but this was the one positive of the book, and happy at the lasting gift he left her. Agree incredibly selfish other than this. (edited) 1y

Freaks me out personally!

wanderinglynn Nay! I think it‘s repulsive & obscene (and I grew up in a family of hunters). 1y

TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii UGH. So much flu and RSV here. Yuk. Hoping it is just a bad cold! 1y
Andrew65 A big no for me. I arrived at a school, new post, and stuffed animals (birds) all over the place, spooked me out. When I became head I sold them and put the money into reading books for the children. 1y
Andrew65 Sending positive thoughts @debinHawaii. 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Problem is COvID infections has harmed all our immune systems so allowed other infections to thrive and with worse and longer lasting symptoms. My granddaughter has currently got Scarlet Fever 1y
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 yes money for books!!! I agree other viruses are running amuck!!! Ugghhhhh. Even seen measles -polio - just awful. Strep is awful! Healing to her! Grandson just over horrific cold with his asthma! Gads. 1y
mcctrish @Andrew65 well done! I had labs in uni upstairs from zoology? Just display after display of mounted animals, which is probably the only place it‘s understandable but I HATED going there every damn time. So a hard pass on taxidermy 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish I understand it in a museum and for education, otherwise no. It‘s a tad creepy for me.. 1y
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Thanks, we have had an unusually high number of child, deaths with Strep this year but looks like now people are now more aware of it both in families and the medical profession. Bad times health wise, and this is why being immunocompromised have been isolating myself a lot more recently. 1y
Andrew65 @mcctrish People didn‘t want to go in the cupboards where they were stored. 1y
AmyG Nay. I am not into the killing of innocent animals for sport. 1y
megnews Nay! 1y
vlwelser Nope. Hard pass. 1y
julieclair Nay. They make me sad. 1y
julieclair @Andrew65 Scarlet Fever! My goodness gracious! Sending healing thoughts her way. And… well done you for turning the dead animal heads into books! 👍 1y
Andrew65 @julieclair Thankfully looks as though on the road to recovery. A lot of it around in the U.K. at the moment. Thanks 😍 1y

Not sure how to rate this book. It was very well written but toward the end you have a big shock coming, that in no way the book or writing prepared you for, and it just came out of nowhere and was instant. 😢😭 Definitely doesn‘t leave you any feel good factor.

For that reason I have rated it So-So but can‘t say it was a poor book because it definitely wasn‘t, more about the reaction to what was written.

I seriously hate this book. I am gutted. Absolutely gutted.

I briefly read the synopsis of this book & thought it was a holiday romance, maybe a little bit more serious than the typical holiday romance. But hey, not every romance needs to be totally light and fluffy as long as there's a HEA. I figured this was along the lines of Josie's Silvers One Day in December.

Well clearly, I should have read some reviews. Because I was wrong. So wrong.

wanderinglynn This book ripped my heart out a la Nichols' One Day. And now, I am sitting here, 9 days before Christmas, bawling my eyes out. Did I see the ending coming? Not at first but eventually. But I kept thinking, no, no, that can't be how this is going to end.
1y
wanderinglynn Now that my heart has been shattered into a thousand pieces, I'm going to go build myself a blanket fort, make a bucket load of tea, and surround myself with some of those fluffy, light romances that are so Hallmark-esque in their sticky sweet predictable, guaranteed HEAs, and try to staple my heart back together. 1y
See All 10 Comments
JenReadsAlot I was thinking about reading this soon.... maybe not?! I loved One Day but the feels! 1y
wanderinglynn @JenReadsAlot it‘s really well done, written beautifully. But be prepared. Like One day, this one has all.the.feels. 1y
Andrew65 Finished this last night and know how you feel 😢 I just didn‘t see that coming. Like you thought this would be a HEA. Not fair! 1y
peanutnine I've been putting off reading the last section of this one because I don't want to be sad lol 1y

#SUDAYBUDDYREAD

We get to finish it now ❄️🎄😂♥️

So predictions?
Thoughts?
Are you liking it?
Did I miss something ?
What -if anything -stuck out to you?

Also -TWO WEEKS TIL CHRISTMAS Hanukkah is NEXT WEEK! Ten days til solstice 🕎🎄❄️

AmyG Like all these books, I always hope that they get together. But still seems like so many secrets need to be revealed. 1y
TheBookHippie @AmyG This one has a different tone I think than the usual trope. (edited) 1y
megnews I think they‘ll have to end up together because isn‘t that what‘s supposed to happen in a Christmas romance despite all that‘s stacked against them? 1y
See All 18 Comments
AmyG @megnews With all that random running into each other….they sure as hell better wind up together! 🤣 1y
megnews @AmyG exactly! Or else why have we been put through all this?! 1y
TheBookHippie @megnews 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😅 yes generally. 1y
Read4life He‘s keeping a big secret. At first I thought he was also grieving the loss of someone very close to him when the two met. Now that doesn‘t feel right. But it still feels BIG. 1y
vlwelser I love this a strange amount. I read the Edinburgh part while I was in Edinburgh. It was a weird coincidence. 1y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😂♥️ I like it better than all our previous in this genre!!! 1y
mcctrish @AmyG despite being semi frustrated with the whole story line, yes they need to get together. Max‘s secret better actually be big and not just dragged through the whole book for nothing. I hope Josie stays in Edinburgh, this is my favourite part so far 🤣 1y
Deblovestoread So glad to be able to finish, revel in a HAE, and move on 😂 1y
DebinHawaii I don‘t think it‘s your average holiday rom-com & there will be a big reveal from Max so probably not a typical HEA. 🫣 1y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I am assuming the same… 1y
CoffeeNBooks I'm just getting tired of Max being weird- he bought Josie a nice pair of earrings even though he didn't really know her but he liked her. He left without saying goodbye the next day. Then he acts weird every time he runs into her even though he really likes her. 1y
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks it‘s a bit convoluted so far 😵‍💫🤦🏻‍♀️. 1y
julieclair I agree with @AmyG .... after the way-too-many coincidences, there'd better be a HEA. 1y
AmyG @CoffeeNBooks Right? Something is not right with Max. He better have a good story there. (edited) 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am thinking it'll be an ending of happy, but apart. Maybe just friends. This is the author's debut and I notice there's a lot of "jolting" and "pushing hair behind her ears". Enough that it's noticeable. I really just want Josie to visit with her grandparents. They seem adorable. 1y

AmyG @TheBookHippie HA! Right? 1y
See All 10 Comments
vlwelser No freaking clue what is going on here. 1y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 😵‍💫 1y
mcctrish My prediction is there is nothing going on with Erin and Max and he is being his usual dumb ass self and I like him less and less 🤣🤣 1y
DebinHawaii I don‘t want to say what I believe is going on from the way things are described on the book jacket, but it‘s not about Max & Erin as a couple. 1y
CoffeeNBooks Again, another wtf moment about this part. I'm so confused. 1y
julieclair It sounds like they are engaged. Which would be so disappointing. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Before this week's readings, I thought Max's loss could be that he & Erin were having a baby & she had a miscarriage or something. But there was barely anything alluding to his list of any kind in April or September. It's weird. Whatever he needs to say, he just needs to say it or have an epiphany that he loves Josie or some shit. Meh...I don't hate it, but it's not great. 1y

His sister Chloe

Max‘s friend Liam

Both side characters that may couple up… are they helping the story ??

AmyG You know , I like Josie….so this isn‘t bugging me as much as itusually would. 1y
vlwelser Meh. This was sort of a weird side quest. 1y
mcctrish It‘s ‘okay‘ 1y

DebinHawaii I don‘t think they are necessary in the story at this point. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
CoffeeNBooks I'm not sure how they really fit into the story at this point. I'm hoping Chloe will be the one to talk Max back to his senses, since she spoke to Josie on the phone that Christmas, and seems to sense how Max feels about her. 1y
julieclair Meh. Not sure why they matter. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Unnecessary but I totally want a smutty follow up starring Liam & Chloe. I get more chemistry from their interactions than Max & Josie. 1y

Laura‘s wedding
Erin‘s plus one is…
Max
Thoughts?
Ridiculous is mine 😂🤣
And Erin do we like her?

AmyG Two coincidences got to feel a bit ridiculous, yes. 1y
kspenmoll It was so easy to predict Erin‘s plus one was Max. Too much to take seriously. 1y
vlwelser Very predictable. But Erin is growing on me. 1y
See All 10 Comments
mcctrish Well I am loving the Edinburg setting. Coincidences are how this story is moving along even though they are totally predictable, at this point I liked Erin being great friends with john way more than Josie being in NYC 1y
Deblovestoread Soooo predictable, like Erin more than before, love seeing a bit of Scotland but this book 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
DebinHawaii I think Erin is okay. But yes, coincidences —but it did say fate intervenes again (and again) in the back cover, so I expected it as soon as she got to the wedding venue. 1y
CoffeeNBooks Uggh. I'm finding it frustrating. Especially the fact that Max and Josie won't just speak to each other like adults each time they run into each other and misunderstand the situation, so they can figure out how they feel about each other. And what the hell is up with the little outing with Max, Josie, and Erin? I feel like Max should have cleared up with Josie what his relationship was with Erin at that point before they all went on a field trip. 1y
CoffeeNBooks Awkward. Uncomfortable. I'm hoping it all starts to make more sense soon so I don't have to keep rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness and sighing in frustration. 1y
julieclair Too many coincidences. Wearing out my eye-rolling muscles! 😆 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Erin is fine in my eyes. I don't dislike her and I laughed as soon as her name was mentioned, like "Of course they'll be at this wedding!" If I could believe in santa claus I guess I can believe in all these coincidences. But like @CoffeeNBooks said, they aren't communicating like adults. Just speak your damn mind! If I'm supposed to believe they have this great connection, it shouldn't be that difficult to express feelings. 1y

Angel of the waters

And then Oliver AND JOSIE
Messy messy messy
I threw the book
So thoughts?
Then
Part 3
So it doesn‘t work with Oliver -
Shocker….

How you liking the story so far? 😅

AmyG I like it but….many coincidences. But then….there is the saying…. Coincidences are the universe‘s way of telling you something (something like that). 1y
megnews @AmyG yeah hard to suspend your disbelief on this one. 1y
megnews I … don‘t think I like it. This is what I dislike about so many romances. Back with old flames you shouldn‘t be. Always wrong timing. Back and forth and back again. It‘s just not how romance works in the real world is it? 🤷🏻‍♀️ only staying involved because it‘s a Christmas read and this group. (edited) 1y
See All 20 Comments
AmyG @megnews Exactly. Where is the romance about the one that got away??? And never came back? 🤣 1y
kspenmoll @megnews I was shocked. What was that about going back to Oliver? Up until that point I respected her choices. Isn‘t she in her 30‘s??? (edited) 1y
Read4life When I read they were together I thought ‘well, @TheBookHippie ‘s book just went flying‘. 🤓 I had to take a break and go read my Christmas mystery. 1y
vlwelser Oliver is so gross. I was disappointed that she went back to him. 1y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll right??? Yuk. Grow up. 😂 1y
TheBookHippie @Read4life 😂😂😂😂😂😂 UGHHHHH why do I do this to myself every year 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
mcctrish It was a legit book throwing moment. I dislike Oliver so much more than Erin! And I am getting exasperated with Josie! Figure your shit out girl 1y
Deblovestoread Not going to lie WTF came out of my mouth when she was back with Oliver… 1y
DebinHawaii It seemed like Oliver was a way to get to New York—not her best moment for sure. 🙄 1y
CoffeeNBooks Yeah, I had a wtf moment about Josie being back with Oliver. I was hoping it was just a "oh Josie's just here for a work thing" circumstance and that she wasn't really back with him. And her reasoning that he realized Cara was just a mistake and was sorry? FIND YOUR SELF-RESPECT JOSIE!! 1y
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1y
julieclair I was sooo very disappointed to find she had gone back to Oliver. I agree with @CoffeeNBooks ... She needs to find her self-respect. 1y
julieclair Maybe Erin and Oliver will wind up together, LOL! 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Even I said WTF at Josie going to NYC with Oliver. I really thought she was past that but I suppose Max hurt her more than Oliver did. The prospect of being jobless probably added another reason to give it a second chance. Though, I really doubt Bia would've allowed that to happen. Dammit Bia... you're sleeping on the job! Sassy BFF should've stepped in there. This is just OK. It's not very romantic. Maybe it ends with Josie & Max as friends. 1y

So the EX
ERIN
Thoughts?
“Comfortable” relationship?!

AmyG I got the feeling he was her “safe” guy….as in there is no one else so why not him? She seems manipulative. (edited) 1y
megnews I don‘t care for her and I don‘t get the relationship. Seem together for no apparent reason. 1y
kspenmoll She was not a likable character- do not trust her. Together due to convenience? Lack of anything better? 1y
See All 12 Comments
vlwelser I like her more as the book evolves. 1y
mcctrish @vlwelser I feel the same, but I‘m putting the onus on Max not Erin. Or equally shared between the 2, safe choice for both I think @AmyG 1y
Deblovestoread I agree with @mcctrish it seems they both choose each other when there is nothing else at the moment 1y
DebinHawaii @vlwelser @mcctrish I agree. Max has more of the responsibility & she seems decent. 1y
mcctrish @DebinHawaii max needs to finish a sentence 🤣 1y
DebinHawaii @mcctrish So true!! 😂 1y
CoffeeNBooks @megnews My thoughts exactly! 1y
julieclair I don't think I trust her. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I saw them more as comfortable friends. I get the impression that they fell into their romantic relationship easily and it was easier to continue getting back together then putting effort into a more suitable mate. After this section, I'm not entirely convinced they're actually together now. If she's as beautiful as she's described, maybe men treat her like an idiot or an accessory. Max at least seems to treat her well. 1y

Anyone watch friends?

Yes I realise it‘s on now I‘ve no interest. Think most people will get the reference?
I have a girl I mentored in love with the show I feel I know it and I‘ve never seen it! Ha.
So any fans here?

AmyG Yes. I get it. The two that should be together but aren‘t due to themselves and something or other. 1y

vlwelser I watched when it was current. But there's something about Ross that gets under my skin. And he's def not hot enough for Rachel. 1y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser the entire reason I will not watch it… he is nails on chalkboard 🤢😅😬 1y
vlwelser I totally agree. And his voice and the whining. So irritating. 1y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I CANNNNNOT. 😵‍💫 1y
mcctrish I‘m pretty sure I watched every episode. I‘m not sure it all translates well now ( Monica‘s fat suit then was cringe) Ross was awkward and I loved him for it 1y
DebinHawaii I watched it and a lot of it on repeat so like @mcctrish I have seen every episode, but I somehow missed the reference in the book. Maybe my late-night reading. 😵 1y
CoffeeNBooks I got the reference. I watched Friends when it was originally on, when I was in college. I'm not sure I would watch it now. My daughter started watching it a few years ago and loves it. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I didn't watch religiously when it originally aired but had seen enough that I watched the final season. Then about 12 years ago we got the DVDs and powered through. I enjoy it. Very quotable & it gets referenced often. A few cringey bits in hindsight but I still like it. I always thought Rachel & Joey were better suited. Ross was too goofy. 1y

Josie writes a letter every Christmas. Reading for #SundayBuddyRead and I‘m expecting a HAE which will bring joy.

Not my usual type of read, but I'm a sucker for easy to follow audiobooks where the narrator has a British accent

Pickpick

This book!!! It took a while to get into and up until 80% in, I was convinced it was 3 star max. Then, in the last 20%, it pulls out your heart and stomps it into the mud, only to give it back to cracked. How is this heartache boosting up the enjoyment of this story? I don't know. It just makes the story.
