Book of Night
Book of Night | Holly Black
#1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black makes her stunning adult debut with Book of Night, a modern dark fantasy of shadowy thieves and secret societies in the vein of Ninth House and The Night Circus In Charlie Hall's world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences--but also to increase power and influence. You can alter someone's feelings--and memories--but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. Your shadow holds all the parts of you that you want to keep hidden--a second self, standing just to your left, walking behind you into lit rooms. And sometimes, it has a life of its own. Charlie is a low-level con artist, working as a bartender while trying to distance herself from the powerful and dangerous underground world of shadow trading. She gets by doing odd jobs for her patrons and the naive new money in her town at the edge of the Berkshires. But when a terrible figure from her past returns, Charlie's present life is thrown into chaos, and her future seems at best, unclear--and at worst, non-existent. Determined to survive, Charlie throws herself into a maelstrom of secrets and murder, setting her against a cast of doppelgangers, mercurial billionaires, shadow thieves, and her own sister--all desperate to control the magic of the shadows. With sharp angles and prose, and a sinister bent, Holly Black is a master of shadow and story stitching. Remember while you read, light isn't playing tricks in Book of Night, the people are. Praise for Holly Black: "Black is a master at world-building." --The New York Times Book Review "No one writes like Holly Black." --John Green, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Does anybody else do this?

Split up the pages into how many days you want to read the book in?

Ive found this is easier when a bunch of holds come in from the library and theyre all due back on the same day!

ItsAnotherJen I do this sometimes! Or set a goal of reading 50 or 100 pages each day of a book that I'm not really into but need to get through. 3d
JamieArc I‘m a spreadsheet dork so I keep track of how many pages per day there. 3d
AmyG I have done this when I need to read a book in a certain period od time. 3d

⭐4.0
An internally different world from Black's previous book series (The Folk of Air). If you had expected something similar it isn't at all, which is what makes it unique. The first half of the book was slow, and a part of me got tired of the book fast, but in the later acts of the book, especially the characters were the saving grace for me.

Not for me.... Was hoping I'd fall in love with it like I did her YA books when I was younger. #bookspinbingo @thearomaofbooks

TheAromaofBooks I couldn't get into this one, either - then I read somewhere that it ends on a cliffhanger because it's going to be a series. Don't know if that's true or not, but it was enough to make me decide to not keep plugging along lol 1w

🎧 Charlie‘s self aware, she makes bad choices & she‘s ok with them, unapologetically so.

She meets Vince who quickly moves in with her & her quirky sister. She‘s constantly 2nd guessing him. She‘s untrusting, probably because she‘s a 1st class liar & thief. Soon she finds what she‘s looking for & the lies start unraveling but will they matter in the end?

Adult themes but a YA plot?

The twist will hopefully play out in future volumes.

Well, I finally finished reading Holly Black‘s The Book of Night. It‘s pretty good! I just learned that the story is a duology which made me smile. There‘s no way that Holly would leave us hanging like that. #TheBookofNight #HollyBlack

The urban parts of this urban fantasy felt really well researched, and even without the fantasy element the various cons, B&Es, and double crosses hit me in my Leverage loving heart. I respect a character with a large collection of wigs.

This is a soft pick ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars. I love the world building and I love the fact that not all of the characters are likable especially the FMC. What I didn‘t care for was the pacing. It‘s a 300 page book but reads like a chunkster at times. The ending was good but is a cliffhanger and I have a feeling the wait for the next book will be long.

This urban fantasy—the author‘s first targeted at adults instead of younger audiences—was unpleasant and anticlimactic instead of magical and thrilling. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#book-of-night

TheAromaofBooks I have this one out from the library right now and it's due back this week so it's next on my list. Yours isn't the only negative review I've seen, so my expectations are pretty low 😂 4w
TracyReadsBooks I, too, was underwhelmed by this book. Very disappointing. 4w
JoyBlue @TheAromaofBooks I feel vindicated—thank you! 😂 No—I really feel sort of sad for all of us who have a less-than-wonderful experience with any book. I hope your experience is better (but I'm glad you're keeping expectations low, just in case). 💙 4w

I LOVED this basically up until the climax when it did a triple-hit on my biggest pet peeve 😬 I knew what the object was that Charlie removed, so did she need to be so mysterious about it?

Ahem. Charlie was a fantastic POV character. I love her inner conflict and her scammer skills. The magic system and world were absolutely fascinating and wonderful. Vince was a hottie. And I thought this was a standalone but I may riot without a sequel!

I‘m not sure what I was expecting from Holly Black‘s first ‘adult‘ book. I do love her Folk of the Air series, and I guess the main characters in this are a little older, but it‘s not super dark or steamy. It took me a while to get in to the audiobook, but once it hit its stride, I was hooked—and then it ends with a 🤬ing cliffhanger, with no planned sequel in the works I can find.

Still, Holly‘s excellent writing/world building=pick.

I didn't like it as much as I like Holly Black's The Folk of the Air series, which I thought was amazing. This book was okay, but I found it hard to follow in some places. I liked the ideas, but I'm not sure they all completely came together for me. It may just be my mood.

I see what the so-so raters mean; the plot was so different and unique it took awhile to get vested in the story. But I hung in there and was rewarded at the end. A plot twist I totally did not see coming! The second half of the book was much better but it did take me some time before I was interested. I love Holly Black‘s books and if you‘re a fan also, then this is a must read. If you are new to this author, I would start with the other series.

I suspect this might be an #UnpopularOpinion but I found Black‘s adult debut to be underwhelming. While it might be a “me & not the book” situation, I found the worldbuilding to be super clunky, the characters a little flat, & the story not particularly interesting—all of which is surprising since I‘m generally a fan of Black‘s writing. The ending makes it clear there‘s more to come but I doubt I‘ll continue. It just didn‘t hold my interest.

kamoorephoto Is it honestly adult fiction or still feels YA? 2mo
TracyReadsBooks @kamoorephoto Fair question. It‘s definitely being marketed as adult but I don‘t think there is really any content you wouldn‘t see in YA. It‘s a little clunky the same way Bardugo‘s Ninth House was. At least for me—same reaction to both books. 2mo
HOTPock3tt I‘m a fan of her previous work so I‘m curious how I will feel about this one🤔 I bought it but haven‘t started it yet. Thanks for an honest review 2mo

I was very excited about Black finally writing adult fantasy so there may have been some squealing when this ARC arrived. Charlie is trying hard to put her past as a con artist and thief behind her and focus on important things like sending her sister to college. The problem is that Charlie is a damn good thief and a magnet for trouble. This was a really fun read with interesting world building. I am looking forward to more about Charlie.

This is a definite pick for me. I enjoyed this dark fantasy thoroughly. Charlie is a flawed, but likable character (my favorite). She's trying to lead a straight life away from thievery, but that world just won't leave her alone. I was highly intrigued by the mysterious Vincent. Great worldbuilding and tension. Some people have learned to control their shadows. I'm crossing my fingers Black makes this into a series. Out May 3rd.

So satisfying! This is going to get a ton of comparisons to Night House but honestly, it's way more fun.

Secrets, murder, shadow magic, con artists, and a surprising amount of romance. I feel like Stefon: This. Book. Has. Everything.

Seriously though, a very fun and fast read. I haven't read Black's YA fae books, but I'm definitely going to now.
