Drums of Autumn
Drums of Autumn | Diana Gabaldon
It began in Scotland, at an ancient stone circle. There, a doorway, open to a select few, leads into the past--or the grave.Claire Randall survived the extraordinary passage, not once buy twice. Her first trip swept her into the arms of Jamie Fraser, an eighteenth-century Scot whose love for her became legend--a tale of tragic passion that ended with her return to the present to bear his child. Her second journey, two decades later, brought them together again in frontier America. But Claire had left someone behind in the twentieth century.Their daughter Brianna...Now, Brianna has made a disturbing discovery that sends her to the stone circle and a terrifying leap into the unknown. In search of her mother and the father she has never met, she is risking her own future to try to change history...and to save their lives. But as Brianna plunges into an uncharted wilderness, a heartbreaking encounter may strand her forever in the past...or root her in the place she should be, where her heart and soul belong...From the Paperback edition.

I want to read the series, but wonder if it is worth since I have seen the show? Any opinions would be helpful! #outlander

Kimberlone I would definitely still recommend the first book...it‘s really good especially if the Jamie/Claire romance is your favorite part of the show (edited) 4w
Liatrek I would defiantly recommend reading the books. I love the series but there is just something about book Jaimie and Claire ❤️❤️ 4w
sprainedbrain I adore the books... the show does a really good job of bringing them to life but the books are so rich and detailed. If you enjoy immersing yourself in great big, sprawling books, I definitely recommend. 4w
Mariposa_Bookworm If you are worried about the size of the books, listen to them on audio. The narrator, Davina Porter, is PHENOMENAL!!!! I‘m re-reading them on audio on my commute. Amazing! 4w
Birdsong28 Yes! I watched the TV series and then got the audiobooks as I knew that it would take a while for me to physically read them. As I watched before I read them it helped me to picture certain scenes. Also the audiobooks helped me get through the longer more descriptive passages and things that I thought dragged the story and @Mariposa_Bookworm is correct as Davina Porter makes these books, I hope she is back for the last two! 📚 📖 4w

Finished! Loved this just as much the second time as I did the first time! Interesting to reading after having more recently watched season 4 of the series, it was wonderful to discover the differences between the two! Spoiler: the book is better! But I do love the series!

I‘m not crying, you‘re crying 😭 this part gives me all the feels. 🥰

Mariposa_Bookworm I‘m listening to them on audio as a re-read. The narrator is PHENOMENAL!!! 1mo
Tianarose @Mariposa_Bookworm yes she is! I am bouncing back and forth between the book and audio. Davina Porter is a truly wonderful narrator. 1mo
Mariposa_Bookworm @Tianarose Have you listened to anything read by Imogen Church? She‘s fantastic as well. She reads Ruth Ware‘s novels. 1mo
Tianarose @Mariposa_Bookworm hmmm don‘t think so, I will definitely look into her though. 1mo

Hoping to get through this and the first cross before season 5 of the show begins in February! Wish me luck. I still have 6 books to read for my Goodreads challenge so hopefully I haven‘t bitten off more than I can chew.

Finished book four of my re-read. It took me so long, I‘ve managed to lose the dust cover. It‘s still an amazing book. So full of details and life. My hope is to have book five read before the end of the year in preparation of season five of the show coming out in February. In my original read of the series, I only made it through book six, so here‘s to a few more re-reads then on to new to me ones!

Tianarose I‘m re-reading before season 5 too! I just finished drums! I‘m about to start the fiery cross. 1mo

Very good. Davina Porter continues to an excellent job on narrating on this series and even though there were some chapters that I thought didn't add anything to the book it was still a wonderful story.

#Audible

AlaMich I haven‘t listened to her read any Gabaldon but I love every other thing I‘ve heard Davina Porter read! 2mo

I'm sick of posting pictures from my ugly audiobook app so you get this promotional shot from the show. You're welcome.

This has probably been my least favorite so far, unfortunately, but I did still enjoy it. I never really jelled with Brianna and Roger so that had much to do with it.

Traci1 I felt like the series sort of bogged down a little with books 3 and 4, then started picking back up. The last two that she has out are amazing. Written in My Own Heart's Blood is so fantastic that it makes the slower ones in the middle more than worth the effort. 10mo
Liatrek I agree! I‘ve just never been a fan of Bree and Roger. I was always happy Jaimie got to meet her because it‘s so unfair how he never got to enjoy raising his kids. But she could of went back to future. 10mo
everlocalwest @Traci1 I'm glad to hear they start picking up again! @Liatrek it is nice to see them as a family. And I think Gabaldon does a great job of having Briana reflect her parents strengths and weaknesses back to them. 10mo
Zelma Roger gets a lot more interesting. He ended up as one of my favorite characters. Definitely with faults but interesting. 10mo
everlocalwest @Zelma Good to know! It can take a while for new characters to find their place in an established series. 10mo

😍😍😍Just finished the season finale and I‘m just going to say it Murtagh is hotter than Jaimie now! Has anyone else watched the last episode yet? I have spoiler comments below😶

Liatrek 1. Omg I cried so hard at Ian leaving😭😭😭 I pretty sure I did reading the book too. 10mo
Liatrek 2. Yes!!! Murtagh and Jocasta❤️ loved that scene ❤️ 10mo
Liatrek 3. Honestly I‘m not a fan of book or show Roger and Brianne. I know it‘s hard to come up to Jaimie and Claire for chemistry but I always wished their story had been different. 10mo
Traci1 Haven't watched this one yet, but I do love Murtaugh. Of all the things they have / could have altered from the books, how his story unfolds is the best change for me. ❤❤ 10mo
Liatrek @Traci1 Yes! It really is be best book to series change I‘ve ever seen. 10mo

My delayed gratification compunction has me meting out these books at a glacial pace; having just started watching the show, I may pick that up a bit. This was a solid entry. Spending time in another world is my greatest escape and this gives us multiple settings along with timelines. But there were things in here that annoyed me.

BibliOphelia Jamie‘s response to Bree‘s pregnancy, the amount of time Roger was gone, and Roger and Bree‘s reunion just didn‘t play as well for me as I‘d hope. But to each their own. 🤷‍♀️ And Ian! I‘m glad he‘s pretty happy, but still! 😩 11mo

I‘m a sucker for Outlander - I love the characters and the richness of the world building. I eat them up! This one was particularly exciting as it takes place in America! Plot wise, it was pretty slow but I enjoyed the extensive descriptions and character building. I‘m loving the new TV season and am tempted to pick up the next book now!

Spent a lot of today in the car, driving to and from VA with Maya to visit my birth father and half-siblings. A lovely hike in the woods (Which reminded me of Fraser‘s Ridge in Outlander), cozy dinner, and then a 2 hr drive back home.

I‘m exhausted, but it was a really good day. Really good. ☺️
