The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois
The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois | Honorée Fanonne Jeffers
The award-winning poet and essayist makes her fiction debut with this magisterial epic--an intimate yet sweeping novel with the freshness and forcefulness of Homegoing, The Turner House, and The Water Dancer --that chronicles the journey of one American family from the centuries of the colonial slave trade through the Civil War to our own tumultuous time. "My life had its significance and its only deep significance because it was part of a Problem," W. E. B. Du Bois once wrote. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood these words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans--the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother, the descendant of slaves and tenant farmers--Ailey carries the weight of this Problem on her shoulders. The daughter of an accomplished doctor and a strict schoolteacher, Ailey is raised in the City but spends summers in the small Georgia town of Chicasetta, where her mother's family has lived since their ancestors arrived from Africa in bondage. Growing up, she struggles with this duality, a battle for belonging that shapes her identity. On one side are her exacting parents and her imperious, light-skinned grandmother Nana Claire, to whom skin color is paramount. On the other, Ailey feels the pull of the "deep country" of her mother's land-tending family, whose forebears endured the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow. But how can Ailey live up to everyone's expectations when half of her family rejects the truth of a fraught racial history, while the rest can't ever seem to break away from it? To come to terms with who she is and what she wants, Ailey embarks on a journey through her family's past, uncovering shocking and unexpected tales of generations of ancestors--Black, Indigenous, and white--in the deep South. In doing so Ailey must learn to embrace her full heritage, a legacy of oppression and resistance, bondage and independence, cruelty and resilience that is the story of the Black experience in America itself.

Finally got caught up on my #LitsyLove. I'll be sending them out tomorrow. I've also developed quite the post card collection, so I'm sending some out to random members or people I haven't spoken to in awhile. Where did they all come from? How did I get so many?

I also started this audiobook. Not sure if I'll like it or not. It's not my usual thing.

#2 fiction

Loved this doorstopper! I try to recommend book around or under 300 pages during this month, so they are less intimidating but this 800 pager is worth all the hype. A multi generational story that is beautifully written and which draws you in and honestly leaves you wanting more. And that cover! Gorgeous.
If you have thought about trying this now is a great time to pick it up

The things about best of books is every one brings back the feels you had when you read it. I know a lot of people said this was too long, but I loved it and love big sweeping books. Yes it was also dark, sad and uncomfortable at some points. But I learned a lot and read a lot around some of the historical story and people. Can‘t ask for much more can you!?

charl08 Have this in the TBR, looking forward to it. 1y

I finally decided to start this one as part of my #chunkster challenge and it took me the better part of a month to get through because I had to deal with the inconvenience of working to support said book habit 🙄. With that said this is without a doubt one of the most lyrically written family saga I‘ve ever read. I truly feel it should be required reading for high school students. So much to learn and understand. âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸

I want to give this a 5 star rating but it was a sweeping saga with several simultaneous story lines but only one caught my attention. It is incredibly well researched to enhance the ficticios story to be as real as possible. Although dense, confusing, & uncomfortable to read at times, it is well worth sustaining until the end of the main storyline. If it is ever pared down to a YA version, the book would be required reading for Middle Schoolers

An audiobook for me, and I didn‘t like the main reader.

An ambitious work, an ode to black history in Georgia, a child of One Hundred Years of Solitude, with less magic. For all the praise this gets, it‘s a good, but not great book. It has problems. It has a lot of strengths too, my favorite being her undergraduate perspective on a fictional Spelman-like historically black women‘s college the early 1990‘s (my college years).

vivastory I'm intrigued. I just finished watching a Pulitzer predictions video & the content creator named this as their top prediction. 2y

For 3 days this was the only book I allowed myself to read because I wanted to let myself get wrapped up in this multi-generational family saga.

Jeffers puts a variety of topics in this chunkster for the reader to consider, but the heart of the story revolves around identity and what it means to be black in America.

Heartbreakingly beautiful and definitely worth the read! 💚

If you love epic multigenerational family sagas, this is the book for you. If chunksters make you happy, it‘s the book for you. If you just like a good read, this is the book for you. Loved how it followed a Creek family, a white family, and a black family…and how their interconnectedness is revealed over time. I have been sitting with this trying to come up with words to review this all week. I realized there are none. It is a masterpiece. It weaves generations of stories with poetic writing, and richly drawn characters. I was worried it was too hyped but it deserves everything positive people are saying and more.

ChaoticMissAdventures @BkClubCare I felt intimidated with it's length, it has been sitting on my shelf since August, but really it is a quicker read than you would think. The family tree in the physical book was super helpful. 2y

I give this book four thumbs up — including my big toes. I love family sagas and this is the best one yet: it chronicles a Black family‘s struggles in the U.S. over every generation starting with the Creek Indians, who sre ancestors to the protagonist. We see these hardships and trumphs from the women‘s points of view, written movingly and elegantly. This book is very long but I felt sad when it ended. A must-read!

Next audiobook - based off recommendations here and everywhere, and a good audible sample.

LitStephanie Looking forward to your review! 2y
Cathythoughts I‘m on audio with this one at the moment. It‘s very good , I‘m half thinking of getting the book , I imagine it would read beautifully too 🤔 Spoiled for choice 😄 2y

This could have easily been a trilogy. There‘s so much in here- family saga, history, relationships, generations- and it kept me interested for about 800 pages. The first 600+ pages are fantastic and are worth it to take on this epic. Great mixing of du Bois and black culture into the story line. I ran out of steam at the end, but that‘s on me- not Jeffers.

Tamra I think I‘d better do this in print rather than audio in that case. 2y
