Scribners 1952 version of The Old Man and the Sea. A genuine classic. An amazing but quick read. This book has enticed me to read more of Hemingway‘s works. And just like that a new favorite has taken the top spot.

It's Hemingway -- his settings and characters are so vivid that they become all you know. It's taken me forever to get to reading this and I'm glad I did.

It really a short but heart touching story. Now I know why it win the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Its a beautifull conversation between human and nature. It shows how we as human are stubborn but also shows how we react in the time of difficulty. Really a simple and short story but meaningful also.

Wow-wow-wow!!!

A song about a novel!!! 😱😱😱

So awesome, you‘ve gotta listen: https://youtu.be/znrEGeYsq9s

Do you know of any other songs like this, where a song is based on a book?! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Palimpsest “Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush. The Indigo Girls have a song about Virginia Woolf, but not one of her books. 5mo
Ruthiella Wuthering Heights and The Sensual World (Ulysses) by Kate Bush, Moon over Bourbon Street (Interview with a Vampire) and Tea in the Sahara (The Sheltering Sky) by Sting, Red Barchetta by Rush (short story by Richard Foster). 😀 Not sure if this counts because it is a movie soundtrack but 1984 by the Eurythmics. (edited) 5mo
MrBook @Palimpsest @Ruthiella Awesome! Good enough on the Woolf song 😊. I‘ll be listening, thanks! Have you heard this song before? (edited) 5mo

vivastory Ramones wrote a song about Pet Sematary, they were mentioned in the book. This song also shows up in Mr Mercedes season 1. I owe Hemingway an apology. I tried to read Old Man and the Sea 30 years ago and found it so dull I gave it up almost immediately. Ever since I‘ve thought of him as a crap writer but I gave this one another try and LOVED it. Such beautiful, spare sentences and such a powerful story about man‘s relationship with the rest of nature. I can‘t square Hemingway‘s respect for all life here with his love of bullfighting, though. 😡

SW-T Hmmm...I tried reading it a couple decades ago and hated it. Loved Hills Like White Elephants though. Perhaps I‘ll give this another try. Thanks for your post! 😊 6mo
GingerAntics I didn‘t know he had a love for bullfighting. That‘s interesting. I had to read this book in 7th grade and couldn‘t stand it. The movie was only slightly less painful. I commend you for giving it another shot. 6mo
Hamlet Try “A Clean Well-Lighted Place.” He‘s best as a short story writer, I think. His understanding and feelings about bullfighting come out in The Sun Also Rises. 6mo

Mindyrecycles @SW-T @Hamlet Thanks! I‘ve stacked both of those. @GingerAntics OMG 7th grade!? That is just cruel. Giving books one more chance is a thing I do occasionally, especially since I found Code Name Verity a bewildering chore and put it down only to have it chosen for my book club. For some reason I loved it to death on my second try. 6mo
Mindyrecycles Hemingway‘s NF book about bullfighting: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_the_Afternoon (edited) 6mo
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 that would probably be a good way to describe my 7th grade ELA teacher. She was so mad that all we thought of the book was that it was boring. She kept telling us we were throwing away an educational opportunity. 🙄 Because that‘s what most 7th graders think about. 🤣😂🤣 6mo

I was not necessarily looking forward to another Hemingway book, but I listened at a good time and enjoyed it more than expected. I appreciated the struggle between the man and the fish as well the journey home. Although it may seem a simple story, I was constantly curious to know what exactly would happen.

Just not for me, despite some lovely passages (see above).

Aside from offhanded sexism in the narration, there's a 'noble savage' aspect that hasn't aged well, to put it generously ("He was too simple to wonder when he had attained humility"; "'Also I have no understanding of [sin]'"). Some parts are laughably heavy-handed (see spoilery comment).

Still, his relationships with nature and with the young boy Manolin are well drawn. #readharder2018

zembla The Christ-figure allegory was drilled into my head in high school, but I had forgotten how clunky it gets in the text itself. I mean honestly: "'Ay,' he said aloud. There is no translation for this word and perhaps it is just a noise such as a man might make, involuntarily, feeling the nail go through his hands and into the wood." OKAY ERNEST. (edited) 13mo

I read this for the Read Harder challenge from Book Riot as my assigned book that I never finished. I used the term ”assigned” loosely as it was a book that my dad wanted me to read when I was younger. While it wasn‘t a very long read I just couldn‘t finish it at the time and was probably too young to appreciate it anyway. I‘m glad that I‘ve finally read it and can‘t wait to tell my dad!

I had to read The Old Man and the Sea in grade 9. Hated. It. Nothing - I mean, not one thing - happened, the entire freakin book. I think (hope?) I was just too young to appreciate the allegory. Or maybe Hemingway just sucks. It could go either way. (Then again, at least it was short. Could be worse, they could have had us read Moby Dick.)

ErinSueMreads HAHAHAHAHA! Too funny. It‘s one of my favorites! Hemingway can be super dry though 😂 2y

Daisy is so selfish, Nick doesn‘t have an opinion on is own and Gatsby spends his whole life crying after a selfish person who left him for an a***ole. What a miserable bunch :D.
