From the author of the beloved national bestseller Migrations, a pulse-pounding new novel about a woman who will do anything to save the wolves of Scotland, and her twin sister Inti Flynn has never believed in the story of the big bad wolf. She knows the truth: it is men who are the real monsters. Inti arrives in the Scottish Highlands to lead a team of scientists tasked with reintroducing wolves into the wild, fiercely determined that nothing will distract her. But at home in her new cottage, where her traumatized twin sister Aggie barely leaves her bed, Inti cant help but remember the painful secrets that drove them out of Alaska. As the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti settles into the rhythms of her new life. She begins to let her guard down, making friends and even opening herself up to the possibility of romance. Her fragile peace is shattered when a farmer is mauled to death, and Inti can feel the town turning against her. Unable to believe her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didnt make the kill, then who did? And will they strike again? Fiercely beautiful and propulsive, Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves, and, perhaps, save herself and her sister along the wayif she isnt consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

I enjoy a book that ends up being a pleasant surprise. Inti is one of the most unusual characters I have ever encountered. She is fierce but brittle. She fights with an intensity that Brad‘s off of her. Her love of wolves and her sister is everything.

I didn‘t love it but I didn‘t hate it either 😹. It started out great but then went off the rails for me. I felt like the author was really trying for something that she just quite couldn‘t pull off. I liked the premise of rewilding wolves in Scotland but some of the plot points were just ridiculous. My favorite thing about this book was that it introduced me to Werner‘s Book Of Colours. If you‘re a sensitive reader, stay far away from this one.

I read most of this at Gladstone‘s but forgot to take a pic whilst I was there - doh!

This follows much the same style and storyline as Migrations; MC with troubled background trying to save a species as well as trying to save herself, and is just as beautifully written.

Still loved it, but not quite as much as Migrations, due to an extraneous plot line and one huge implausibility.

Thank you so much for sending it to me @KarenUK 😘

JamieArc This didn‘t quite live up to the hype for me - the plot was a bit much. But I still liked it, especially the atmospheric feel. Looking forward to Migrations. 1w

Book 135

I listened to this well-written story with themes of wildness and ferocity of humankind and animals. the protagonist's career is to reintroduce wolves in the wild. She also must help her sister heal from an abusive relationship and come to terms with the abuses she has endured. There is a lackluster element of fantasy that fell short of the author's intent but did add complexity to the character and uniqueness to the story. 4 stars

This book has a density to it because there isn't a lot of dialogue and the narrator spends a lot of time describing how others' touch feels because of her mirror-touch synesthesia. All while she is leading a team to rewild a group of wolves in Scotland.

Where this author's previous book Migrations was depressing from an environmental perspective, it was more about isolation. This book has a more violent streak and also a bit of a murder mystery.

The writing is amazing, no problems there.
My issues are below so I don‘t put any spoilers.
Generally disappointed.

TrishB My fault- things happened to Wolves. I should have guessed. 1mo
TrishB Domestic violence, I try not to read books about it. 1mo
TrishB Implausible pregnancy and birth. Just don‘t see what it added to the story, weren‘t the Wolves enough? Just need to add a bit of sex and pregnancy problems to add to an enthralling subject? 1mo
See All 12 Comments
LauraBeth I‘m reading this now so I‘ll look at the spoilers when I‘m finished 😂 1mo
TrishB @LauraBeth I think I‘m definitely in the minority- but definitely don‘t look at the spoilers! 1mo
AmyG I found the birth to be a bit of magical realism….comparing her birth to that of wolves in the forest. I get why it didn‘t work for some. (edited) 1mo
TrishB @AmyG really interesting point. I guess because the pregnancy storyline wasn‘t working for me, this just seemed way too predictable and not real to me. 1mo
AmyG I get it. For whatever reason-this book “worked” for me. And yes, it was a bit predictable. 1mo
Kimberlone @TrishB 100% agree with your review! Her trauma backstory, murder mystery, and the pregnancy plot line did not work for me at all! The most interesting stuff was the wolves and the small town politics. I‘ve read almost universally favorable reviews for this book, so I think we are definitely in the minority. 1mo
TrishB @Kimberlone too many things going on so unsatisfactory outcome all round! We definitely are in the minority. But that‘s fine- we all read our own story 😁 1mo
Larkken @Kimberlone @TrishB I‘m with you both! There was a number of “wait, what?” moments here. I really thought the wolf saving her and her baby was just too far. As if that shark hadn‘t been jumped already by her giving birth in the winter in the woods. I … dunno 1mo
Kimberlone @Larkken @TrishB the entire pregnancy plot line from beginning to end was ridiculous. Just the fact that she refused to go to the doctor the entire time was enough for me to completely discount what it was intended to add to the story. 1mo

This book was amazing. I loved it. The audiobook is very well narrated, and the accents all sounded spot on to me.

I am frustrated at this book. I started it and was totally in love until we got to the tired and frankly gross plot line of "someone doesn't want to have children, we will just have a character fall pregnant, and then everyone will change their mind".
The writing is excellent, the storyline interesting with a few twists and turns, the pacing is excellent and even with some emotional scenes it is very readable.

Amazing! A story set in the near future of a woman set on rewilding (and saving) Scotland‘s ecosystem by reintroducing wolves into the country. Of course it is also about rewinding herself. Intense, dramatic, poetic, and glorious. A celebration of feminine strength.

By the end, I was borderline hate-reading this. I really enjoyed the first half of the book which focused on Inti‘s work re-wilding wolves in rural Scotland and her dealing with the politics of that in the local community. Things really started to go off the rails when the book became a murder mystery and dwelled in trauma porn. Inti‘s “mirror-touch” disorder was a lazy plot device that was used to excuse the extremely stupid decisions she made.

BarbaraBB I loved it but I understand what you mean! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I am a so-so also. My big complaint about her lazy plot devices is the pregnancy storyline. It felt sensationalized and out of place. 2mo
Kimberlone @ChaoticMissAdventures didn‘t have enough space to discuss in my review, but that was a big issue for me. Eventually everyone knew she was pregnant but she still refused to go to the doctor?! Plus the way the baby was born?! There was so much in that book that was beyond the suspension of disbelief. 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kimberlone The way the baby is born that whole part is a huge eye roll. I personally just hate any story where one character says they don't want children, the author makes someone pregnant and then suddenly everyone is like yay baby! It just gets under my skin so much.
I can suspend belief for a fantasy or magical realism read, but this isn't supposed to be one so yes, agree there is too much convenience & lazy plot devices used.
2mo
Kimberlone @ChaoticMissAdventures totally missed opportunity but this book could totally have worked for me sans mirror touch, twin sister, extreme trauma backstory, and pregnancy plot lines. Otherwise the idea about the reintroduction of wolves and local community power plays was actually super interesting to me! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Kimberlone so glad to see I am not alone here! 😂
I did enjoy her writing, it was an easy read, but all of the plot devices were awful.

3.5 ⭐️ I struggled through the first half! I knew the main character was flawed based on her trauma, but she felt unlikeable and nonsensical. I also wasn‘t feeling the wolf magic like I hoped! The last third of the book redeemed itself to me and the ending was tenderly interwoven in a way the surprisingly made me cry, multiple times! Ultimately a beautiful, touching story even if it took me awhile to get there.

Inti is an expert on wolves, facing a hostile, fearful local population as she and her team perform wolf reintroduction in Scotland. As the story moves forward, we also learn her history alongside her twin. There‘s a lot of violence in this and mostly the story is terrific, but there‘s a scene near the end so ludicrous it almost ruined the book for me. I‘m putting content warnings under a spoiler tag below.

Inti, an expert on wolves, is part of a mission to re-introduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands. Opposition from farmers who fear the wolves will kill their livestock is fierce. But when a human turns up dead from what looks like a wolf attack, Inti desperately tries to save her beloved wolves along with her sanity. This is a suspenseful novel which touches on climate issues and violence against women. Great pacing and keeps you guessing.

This book is absolutely amazing. I had extremely high hopes because Migrations was my favorite read last year. This lived up to her first book and may even be my favorite of the two. I won‘t speak of the plot, as there‘s so much the author was able to do in such a slim novel. But big themes are identity, conservation, good vs evil, nature. Stayed up late with tears streaming to finish. I‘m just so impressed; I‘ll read anything this woman writes.🐺

Tamra I read such raving reviews of this and Migrations. I need to get them in print I think. I tried the audio version of Migrations and it didn‘t work for me. However I do remember leaving it TBR in print. 3mo

AmyG Agree with it all. I will also read anything this woman writes. Some have said you have to suspend belief a bit. But I say, because she is such a beautiful writer it‘s all so believable. I may have loved this more, too. Come on @CBee ...get with the program! 🤣 (edited) 3mo
