Florence Adler Swims Forever
Florence Adler Swims Forever: A Novel | Rachel Beanland
32 posts | 39 read | 43 to read
Over the course of one summer that begins with a shocking tragedy, three generations of the Adler family grapple with heartbreak, romance, and the weight of family secrets in this stunning debut novel thats perfect for fans of Manhattan Beach and The Dollhouse. Rachel Beanland is a writer of uncommon wit and wisdom, with a sharp and empathetic eye for character. Shell win you over in the most old fashioned of ways: She simply tells a hell of a story. Rebecca Makkai, Pulitzer Finalist for The Great Believers Atlantic City, 1934. Every summer, Esther and Joseph Adler rent their house out to vacationers escaping to Americas Playground and move into the small apartment above their bakery. Despite the cramped quarters, this is the apartment where they raised their two daughters, Fannie and Florence, and it always feels like home. Now Florence has returned from college, determined to spend the summer training to swim the English Channel, and Fannie, pregnant again after recently losing a baby, is on bedrest for the duration of her pregnancy. After Joseph insists they take in a mysterious young woman whom he recently helped emigrate from Nazi Germany, the apartment is bursting at the seams. Esther only wants to keep her daughters close and safe but some matters are beyond her control: theres Fannies risky pregnancynot to mention her always-scheming husband, Isaacand the fact that the handsome heir of a hotel notorious for its anti-Semitic policies, seems to be in love with Florence. When tragedy strikes, Esther makes the shocking decision to hide the truthat least until Fannies baby is bornand pulls the family into an elaborate web of secret-keeping and lies, bringing long-buried tensions to the surface that reveal how quickly the act of protecting those we love can turn into betrayal. Based on a true story and told in the vein of J. Courtney Sullivans Saints for All Occasions and Anita Diamants The Boston Girl, Beanlands family saga is a breathtaking portrait of just how far we will go to in order to protect our loved ones and an uplifting portrayal of how the human spirit can endureand even thriveafter tragedy.

I loved Beanland‘s sophomore book, so I knew I needed to go back and read her debut, and I really liked this as well. It centers on a tragedy and how that affects various members of the family and those in their orbit, while looking at antisemitism leading into WWII. Quite sad, but a good read.

Tragedy strikes a family, bringing decisions to hide the truth and pulling the family into an elaborate web of secret-keeping and lies. It was so so. Slow to read and I really didn't care about any of the characters. 2 stars.

Finished my first #bookspin for January 22. I am so glad for the nudge to pick up this beauty. It made me think, as a Mom how far would you go to protect your child and are family secrets sometimes justifiable. 5/5

First time author. A story that the author based on true happenings in her family. The tragic death of a daughter causes a family to hide secrets from each other and has them trying to understand the Jewish struggle in America and over in Germany when people were still not sure of Hitler‘s true plan. Set in Atlantic City, great characters and allows you to feel how family members protect the ones that they love from the truth. Great story.

Based on a true story which author explains at the end of the book. HF set in 1934, we will see general view of what was happing around Jewish people before the war. The story is about how the Adler family manage/cope with the tragedy of Florence‘s death, how this tragedy affects Adlers family. It was a beautiful novel but sad. 4⭐️

I enjoyed this book a lot. The character dies in the 1st chapter and the entire story is told from the viewpoint of 7 other characters as they all try to keep the death a secret from the character‘s pregnant sister until after she delivers a healthy baby. It is actually based on a true story in the author‘s family. It takes place in the summer of 1934 in Atlantic City so it is a good summer beach book.

What a great story! I read this book in the course of one day, I couldn't put it down.
Florence has a goal to swim the English Channel, but tragedy strikes. The story continues in the voices of the people who love her. Seven year old Gussie is a sweetheart. Her sister Fannie is bedfast awaiting her baby,⬇️

Crazeedi since she lost the last one. Stuart is her swimming coach. Her father Joseph has supported Anna, who escapes Germany as Hitler rises to power. Esther has demanded they keep a secret. The author does a great job creating the interactions among them all. I highly recommend 4y
JamieArc I wonder if the title character was named after Florence Chadwick, who I believe was the first woman (maybe person) to swim across the English Channel... 4y
Crazeedi @JamieArc actually no, the author says in acknowledgement that she wrote about her great great aunt Florence 4y

Book 103 A unique, good novel set in Atlantic City in the '40's. Told from the perspective of various members of a family, the title is misleading but multifaceted. Theme of secret-keeping in families, how they hurt and protect those we love. Background themes relating to the Jewish experience during WWII, immigration into the United States, gender roles, and briefly sexuality. Worth the read, and I look forward to more by Beanland.

This was my choice for #SummerNostalgic #PopSummer20
And I could not have chosen a better book. I grew up hearing stories about my father‘s childhood summers on the NJ shore & then years later my own summers were spent in Atlantic City. This book was historically accurate & downright believable. Rachel Beanland captured the time & place so authentically. The multi cast narration was wonderful. A perfect summer read🏖 Shoutout to Steel Pier 🎡🎠🎢

KarenUK Sounds lovely... definitely moving this one up the TBR 😊👍💕 4y
Cinfhen It was #LitLite but the audio was great and the memories invoked were priceless @KarenUK 4y
Reviewsbylola There‘s a page on Florence Adler in one of our books and my Florence loves to read about her namesake. I think it‘s 4y
Cinfhen That‘s cool @Reviewsbylola but in the author‘s note she said her great aunt was named Florence Lowenstein so I‘m guessing Florence Adler is not the same person. What did Florence Adler in Rebel Girls do???? (edited) 4y

As a child, I spent MANY MANY summer days on the Jersey Shore as did my father. So this book is my choice for #popsummer20 #NostalgicForSummer #AtlanticCity #HomeOfTheFudgieWudgieAndSaltWaterTaffy 🏖

Hooked_on_books My mom grew up in NJ. No matter where we lived when I was a kid, we‘d go back to visit her parents for 2 weeks in the summer. We went to the beach at Seaside Heights and would ride the Seaside Park log flume, but only at the end of the evening after playing boardwalk games so we wouldn‘t have to walk around soaking wet. We had a lot of fun! 4y
Cinfhen Oh, how we LOVED the boardwalk @Hooked_on_books we could spend HOURS playing in the arcades. Such GREAT memories 🥰 4y
Oryx I spent a summer there when I was 20, working at Morey's Piers in Wildwood. 4y
Cinfhen WILDWOOD 🙌🏻💗 @Oryx 4y
