The Girls in the Garden
The Girls in the Garden: A Novel | Lisa Jewell
One of Peoples, Glamours, and Buzzfeed's Best Reads of Summer Jewell expertly builds suspense by piling up domestic misunderstandings and more plot twists than an SVU episode. Its a page-turner for readers who like beach reads on the dark side. People Imagine that you live on a picturesque communal garden square, an oasis in urban London where your children run free, in and out of other peoples houses. Youve known your neighbors for years and you trust them. Implicitly. You think your children are safe. But are they really? On a midsummer night, as a festive neighborhood party is taking place, preteen Pip discovers her thirteen-year-old sister Grace lying unconscious and bloody in a hidden corner of a lush rose garden. What really happened to her? And who is responsible? Full of suspense yet emotionally groundedFans of Liane Moriarty, Paula Hawkins, and Carla Buckley will adore this peek inside a gated community that truly takes care of its own, no matter the consequences." This one falls between a pick and a so-so rating. I liked the book, but its pace was too slow for a so-called suspense novel. Plus I had everything figured out early on, it wasn‘t hard. Not a bad book by any stretch, but I was expecting a quicker narrative. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

MelissaSue81 Agree.. this one didn‘t excite me. I didn‘t really like the characters either. 5mo
FantasyChick I have a real love/hate relationship with Jewell's books. No matter how interesting the story is I always find them hard to get into 🤷‍♀️ 5mo

I wanted so badly to like this book. I tried multiple times over the course of 6 months but it just couldn‘t keep my interest. I kept trying because it would be such a quick read but nevertheless it just wasn‘t for me. #bail #tothelittlelibrary

This was an interesting people-study kind of book. The girls were really unsettling! And I really like a book that starts with a dramatic event and then goes back to what led up to it. I have more Jewells on the shelf so will get to them quickly

Disturbing at times, and often quirky, Jewell pulls it off with characters that are highly developed. These characters are rich in detail that outlines their motivations which propel the story.

A solid 4⭐️ read that reminded me of Liane Moriarty a bit. Jewell creates an insular environment: a shared neighborhood garden. Something bad happens on a day when pretty much anyone in the neighborhood could have been a suspect, and the mystery unravels throughout the book. Lots of red herrings or characters you wish you knew more about. It was fast paced and a satisfying read!

Mdargusch Great review! I had put this book aside after reading other reviews but now I think I will put it back on my TBR pile. 13mo

A festive neighborhood party is taking place and Pip discovers her 13 year old sister, Grace, unconscious and bloody in a rose garden. What happened to her? And who is responsible? I have read a few other books by Lisa Jewell and really enjoyed them all but this one seemed to fall flat for me. It was an interesting story but the end did not really make sense to me. If you want to read Lisa Jewell, I suggest you start with another of her books.

Purrfectpages I was underwhelmed by this one as well. 13mo

This book was a big fat meh. Kind of like Liane Moriarty but with preteens. Every character has something suspicious about them... there‘s a bunch of different relationship dynamics happening (too many, IMO) and a whole bunch of side stories not having anything to do with the main event. It mostly held my attention but I didn‘t really like it.

Mdargusch This has been in my TBR pile forever! I guess I won‘t be in a hurry to read it. 13mo

Normally I love Lisa Jewell, but I couldn‘t get into this one. I ended up skimming most of it and reading the last two chapters. I needed closure, but not enough to put in the time. It was really close to a bail for me. Maybe I just wasn‘t in the right mood.

KateFulfordAuthor @JacqMac @blondie May I recommend my debut, Jacqueline? Pacy, laugh out loud funny and more. Check my bio for sample chapters and to assess other reviews on Goodreads. Thanks, Kate 1y

Still playing catch-up for #AGameOfFavorites (Day 7) - Mystery/Literary Author

I decided to go with Lisa Jewell. I have so many favorite mystery authors as it‘s one of my all time favorite genres. The tagged book is probably my favorite of hers that I‘ve read so far.

In an interview, she said that everyone should be reading Tamar Cohen and start with The Mistress‘s Revenge. So I immediately looked it up and put it on my TBR.

It is a STUNNER of a day here in Virginia Beach! Yes it is windy, but oh my goodness it feels great!!!! All of the windows are open. We even slept with them open!! 😍😍

After reading around 50 pages of three other books this week, I finally got sucked into this. I‘ve often fantasized about living in one of London‘s private garden communities. I guess the closest we have in the States is living on a golf course. Not the same!!!!!

Even though I check Litsy everyday, I don‘t post very often. So, I am challenging myself to post reviews going forward.

A mystery/thriller with some family drama is one of my favorite genres. However this book fell flat for me. The mystery was good. I just didn‘t find any characters to root for.

Teenager girls are assholes. Now with that out of the way, I enjoyed this one more than I thought. I listened to it on audio and it didn‘t take away from anything. The book is split up in two - the before and the after - Lisa does a good job weaving in the characters and keeps you guessing towards the end. Will be buying at some point for my shelf.

This thriller had a meandering pace and was compelling at the same time. The characters were engaging, especially the sisters that were reminiscent of those in The Virgin Suicides. Kept me guessing with some quality red herrings. Overall, I really liked the vibe.

This author reminds me a bit of Liane Moriarty. This starts with a mother and 2 daughters who are moving into a new neighborhood. There‘s a husband but they aren‘t currently living together. I‘ll let the author tell you why. Anyhow the neighborhood seems friendly at first but small cracks begin. You know at the very beginning that something major happens close to the end but you have to read the book to find out what. I thoroughly enjoyed this

riversong153 Someone described this as Gilmore girls in a book, would you agree? I haven‘t read this one yet but I want to. 2y

This book was very intricately written, weaving a mystery by blending history and present. Has history repeated itself? Who killed Phoebe all those summers ago and are they involved with Grace's attack? As a parent you want to protect your children, any child, but as they grow up and have their own lives and secrets you can't watch and protect them all the time. #Review #LitsyAtoZ #LetterG
