Her harrowing tale of surviving Auschwitz to be sentenced for 15 years in Gulag for war crimes makes my heart hurt. What was her role at Auschwitz? Was she set free from Gulag? Does she find love? What happened to the person that Lale once told Heather Morris is the “bravest“ person he knew? Heather Morris gives us these answers in a beautifully written story that shows the human spirit although broken can light a way for others to follow

Sequel/companion to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this is well written and well researched. Details about Gulag prisoners‘ lives were obscure when I was a child, and it took the death of Stalin for them to be released. Cilka, who was at Auschwitz several years, was sentenced to 15 years in Gulag. 😥

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ This was a simply stunning, heart breaking story, and hopeful story. Based on a true story, the life of Cilka emphasized the power of strength and perseverance in the most dire of circumstances. The writing was compelling and offered a very personal glimpse at the horrors of war and the long lasting ramifications of choices people made in order to survive. I‘m looking forward to reading more by this author.

A story that interlocks with Morris‘s other work. A story based in reality, on interviews and research. What happened to one extremely brave and strong woman during and after World War Two, in a Siberian work camp.

A sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz, this is the story of Cilka. After surviving Auschwitz-Birkenau where she was forced at 16 to be a prostitute for Nazi officers, Cilka is sent to a Siberian Prison for being a Nazi sympathizer. Sentenced to 15 years, she proves again to be a survivor. A strength & compassion for others allows her to work in the hospital instead of doing hard labor. In an inhumane place, Cilka finds love.

Cilka's Journey tells a fictional account of Cilka's life and the horrors that women faced at the hands of Soviet soldiers and fellow prisoners after #WW2 ended. A great read if you want to see how women coped from years of living at #concentrationcamps. It really made me uncomfortable with just minor details of violence

Morning everyone 🙂 Woke up in a reading mood today, lol. Taking a bit of a break from #NFNov to read this one, it's good so far. For some people, especially women, the defeat of the Nazi's didn't end their torment, it only threw them into even more suppression and violence #historicalfiction #CeciliaKlein #Gulags #womeninhistory

My views on this book and the tattooist of Auschwitz will forever remain complicated. What I am sure about though is that I am done with this author.

Cailey_Mac Good review! I usually like 1940s novels, and was meaning to pick these up; I think I will skip them honestly, I don‘t care for historical inconsistencies 2mo
Michellesibs @Cailey_Mac I agree, such a shame there are so many books of the market now full of inaccuracies, this period of history is horrific, it doesn't need any added fictional layers. 2mo
Cailey_Mac @Michellesibs absolutely! I don‘t need anything else messing up the already murky view I have of history 2mo

An emotional and gut-wrenching historical read from Heather Morris exploring the world of the Gulag in post-WWII Russia. Overall, I very much enjoyed the story and thought it was well done. Lots of detail and good characters. However, the ending just didn't feel complete to me and I was left wanting a little. Regardless, this is still a very good read and a solid follow up novel.

Book publishing folks: “Let‘s make sure we NEVER show women‘s faces on covers - thanks!”

Prairiegirl_reading I noticed this at a recent trip to the bookstore. Almost half the books on the new release rack had women facing away. Annoying. 3mo
sblbooks So true, why is that? 3mo
llwheeler So true eh 🙄 And if the face is there, it's looking away from the viewer. And if it is looking at the viewer, it's half cut off. 3mo

marleed It kinda drives me crazy. When I read one with such a cover - and I just did - I find my expectations for liking it is impacted negatively. The story has to work it‘s way out - and my current didn‘t! 3mo

Cilka leaves Auschwitz and is immediately transported to a Serbian prison to serve a 15-year sentence for sleeping with the enemy after being raped by the commanding officers of the Auschwitz camp. From there, she is forced to see countless more deaths and face obstacles that seem impossible for one person to bear. She survives, hopes, and perseveres. And the readers bear witness to a small light in one of the darkest times in human history.

Although the author didn‘t go into detail the sufferings of the prisoners and the brutality of the gulag, and that there was more telling than showing in her writing, Cilka‘s Journey was still an eye-opening read, and made me teary a few times. I won‘t say more as I don‘t want to give anything away.

So right before publication date I managed to finished this one today. I have mixed feelings. I like how much Morris researches her books & I understand that some of it is fictional to make a good story. But somehow the ending just left me hanging. I also hope that this wasn‘t the final draft because some of the grammatical errors & missing words really threw me off. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 ⬇️

IvoryLunatic I do have to admit though that I didn‘t really know anything about gulags and am appalled to hear about them in detail. 4mo

I do not think I have the words to truly express what an extraordinary book this is. I enjoyed THE TATOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ so, of course, wanted to know Cilka‘s story. However, this book can easily be read without first reading THE TATOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ. I was totally enthralled and found it extremely difficult to put the book down. This is a story I will not forget.

I thought this book was very powerful and strong and eye opening. I know I have read so many books centered around the Holocaust that either end there or have a very tragic note resulting from the treachery of this time. This is a bit different. It‘s about the journey of someone who believes they are rescued but instead they are judged harshly on the life they were forced to live with during this time.
