Made in Sweden
Made in Sweden: 25 ideas that created a country | Elisabeth Åsbrink
4 posts | 1 read
What are the real Swedish Values? Who is the real Swedish Model? In recent times, we have come to favour all things Scandi — their food, furnishings, fiction, fashion, and general way of life. We seem to regard the Swedes and their Scandinavian neighbours as altogether more sophisticated, admirable, and evolved than us. We have all aspired to be Swedish, to live in their perfectly designed society from the future. But what if we have invested all our faith in a fantasy? What if Sweden has in fact never been as moderate, egalitarian, dignified, or tolerant as it would like to (have us) think? The recent rise to political prominence of an openly neo-Nazi party has begun to crack the illusion, and here now is Swede Elisabeth Åsbrink, who loves her country ‘but not blindly’, presenting twenty-five of her nation’s key words and icons afresh, in order to give the world a clearer-eyed understanding of this fascinating country …

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Ikea! Here I come! 🤣 5mo
TEArificbooks I‘m going to IKEA! 5mo
Texreader @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @TEArificbooks Sorry but I have to share a little story since you both mentioned IKEA. My Norwegian husband has a natural distaste for all things Swedish (it‘s a Scandinavian thing), but the first time I was in Norway he had to take me to IKEA! At the time I think there was none or maybe one IKEA in the US. I love the oat cookies from IKEA, or havreflarn as they‘re called in Norway. Enjoy!! 5mo
Chrissyreadit @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Ikea was my first thought too! 5mo
Chrissyreadit Leila that book list is incredible!!! i‘m so sad my brain fog has limited reading because i “want†to read everything!!! 5mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Texreader I think all regions have a natural distaste for at least one "local" spot. Most of the NYC region talks trash about Philadelphia. Cute that he had to take you to Ikea, though. I would want to check one out while over there, just to contrast & compare. 5mo
Catsandbooks @Texreader that's so cute! 5mo
Catsandbooks @Chrissyreadit Thanks! The book list will still be there even after the year is over so you can always go back to it! And there will be one for 2024 too. I'm sorry you've had a hard time though this year â¤ï¸ 5mo
Amiable My grandmother was from Sweden and I have her family recipe for Swedish cardamom bread. I usually make it every Christmas in her memory. â¤ï¸ 5mo
Catsandbooks @Amiable aw that's such a wonderful tradition! â¤ï¸ I love cardamom rolls! 4mo
AnnR @Catsandbooks Could you please remove me from the tag list? Thanks so much. 🤗 4mo

Ummmmmmm…
This is an ARC. Sure hope they caught it later! Don't get me wrong, B. Franklin was a heck of a guy - and Governor of Pennsylvania, among many other things- but in *this* timeline, he was never President.

Aimeesue I'm really enjoying the book, though. Very interesting. And super feminist, so that's a plus. 5y
Crazeedi Hopefully they correct that glaring error!! 5y

jillrhudy Interesting! 5y
Aimeesue @jillrhudy You would like the bit about Carl Linnaeus, who apparently invented the cross referenced card catalog (!!!) He was quite the organizer, that Carl. 5y
jillrhudy A man after my own â¤ï¸ 5y

My #bookhaul from #ALA2019 ...such a tiny amount for me, mainly because I didn‘t want to haul them on the Metro all over DC and Maryland to bring them home. I made out the best at Kensington Publishing!

Also, I had a wonderful chat with @melissanorr ...so great to meet you! Meeting fellow Littens is super fun!

melissanorr It was so great meeting you! Now I have to unpack my tote bag... 5y
ferskner I'm so jealous! I've never been to ALA. 5y
Librarybelle @ferskner I‘ve been a couple of times, but only when it‘s in DC, and when my library snags a few exhibit passes. I‘m usually begging colleagues to bring me back books, so a rare treat for me to actually go through the exhibits! 5y
