Based on a true story of discovery, The Visitors is New York Times bestselling author Sally Beaumans brilliant recreation of the hunt for Tutankhamuns tomb in Egypts Valley of the Kingsa dazzling blend of fact and fiction that brings to life a lost world of exploration, adventure, and danger, and the audacious men willing to sacrifice everything to find a lost treasure. In 1922, when eleven year-old Lucy is sent to Egypt to recuperate from typhoid, she meets Frances, the daughter of an American archaeologist. The friendship draws the impressionable young girl into the thrilling world of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter, who are searching for the tomb of boy pharaoh Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. A haunting tale of love and loss, The Visitors retells the legendary story of Carter and Carnarvons hunt and their historical discovery, witnessed through the eyes of a vulnerable child whose fate becomes entangled in their dramatic quest. As events unfold, Lucy will discover the lengths some people will go to fulfill their deepest desiresand the lies that become the foundation of their lives. Intensely atmospheric, The Visitors recalls the decadence of Egypts aristocratic colonial society, and illuminates the obsessive, daring men willing to risk everythingeven their sanityto claim a piece of the ancient past. As fascinating today as it was nearly a century ago, the search for King Tuts tomb is made vivid and immediate in Sally Beaumans skilled hands. A dazzling feat of imagination, The Visitors is a majestic work of historical fiction.

My last book of 2023 was Lucy Worsley‘s enjoyable middle grade novel about Jane Austen‘s nieces. I‘ve been feeling a little Egypt-ish of late so I‘m going to dive into the tagged book that‘s been on my TBR for several years now. I‘m trying to start the new year off by continuing to whittle down the backlog of books on my shelves… let‘s see how long that lasts! 😆

Thanks for doing this again, @BookNAround ! Happy New Year, everyone! 🎉

Started off as a five star for me. A compelling young narrator full of the wonder and excitement of Egypt and a clarity well researched pull into the life of the archaeologists there. Pivoting around something as momentous as the finding of tutenkamun tomb the story seemed to get a bit lost and I am not sure the split timeline added much. Still a solid pick and absolutely full of the sense of time and place #booked2023 📸 valley of the kings

rubyslippersreads I love this book. 12mo

This historical novel tells the tale of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and those involved. I adored the period detail and the colorful characters, particularly Lucy our narrator (the only character that was fictional). It wasn't a page turner in any way, and moved at it's own somewhat languorous pace, yet the story set between the 1920's Egypt, and the present day life of our aging narrator, kept me captivated.

Cinfhen I‘ve seen this book so many times but I‘ve yet to purchase it...waiting for the day it calls to me! The setting and time period sound intriguing 6y

Great chunkster of a #buddyread I didn‘t want it to end #Egypt @CouronneDhiver @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled

CouronneDhiver Any favourite characters? Settings? Thoughts about the writing? Etc. @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @BookishTrish 6y
BookishTrish I liked the idea of visitors: Lucy and Miss Mack etc visiting Egypt as a way to get Lucy strong again, and then Lucy visiting Frances to say goodbye. But I also liked the idea of visitors as people who don‘t belong there: Carter pilfering bits of Egypt like sordid souvenirs, Clair crashing her friend‘s marriage. 6y
BookishTrish The Valley of the Kings setting was by far my favourite. I googled and watched archival footage as much or more than I read some days. The bits in the American cure home reminded my of a book I didn‘t love 6y

BookishTrish What about you @CouronneDhiver ? 6y
CouronneDhiver I hadn‘t really considered those various takes on the title - very insightful! I especially loved the parts told from a child‘s perspective... there‘s something so familiar, to me, about children being “seen and not heard” but, therefore, picking up all kinds of tidbits from the adults conversations. The scene with the dresses and makeup brought forward some similar memories. 6y
CouronneDhiver I always appreciate an unlikable/prickly character, so Lucy‘s dad, Mr Carter, Nicola, etc were all good fun! 6y
BookishTrish @CouronneDhiver Carter did not come off as the archaeologist / adventurer / hero I was expecting. I liked the tension between him and Evelyn. I do wish some of the story had been told from her POV. 6y
CouronneDhiver What did you think of the “older Lucy” parts ... necessary? In some ways, I wouldn‘t have minded if it concluded at the end of her Egyptian adventure. 🤔 6y
BookishTrish I liked reading about her marriages and her relationship with her stepmother, but it did seem thematically very different to the Egypt bits. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver I thought the part at the TB convalescence cabin was interesting and touching. But the stepmother and her girlfriend? Weird tangent, I thought - and she seemed like such a mean person that I really didn‘t get why Lucy gave her the time of day at all. 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver Also, I didnt really like that she ended up with Peter. I figured he‘d be more like a brother to her (even though she hadn‘t seen him in years). 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver the big question: who was the lady at the graveside at the end of the book? I think it was Frances 🤔 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @CouronneDhiver I ❤️ Carnarvon. Also curious about Pecky Callendar (he was an actual person, right)? 6y

CouronneDhiver Oh gosh - wait for me! 😆 I was hanging out for awhile so I didn‘t get too far ahead and now I‘m way behind. 6y
BookishTrish @CouronneDhiver Will do! Let me know when to start up again. In the meantime I‘ll lose myself in archival news footage. #patheforthewin 6y

If by #allthefeels you mean sadness, anger, fascination with the subject matter, and absolutely loving the book, this novel did all that for me. The three people in the photo are the Earl of Carnarvon (of Highclere Castle, the real Downton Abbey), his daughter Evelyn, Howard Carter, real people who all appear in the book. #recommendsday #feistyfeb

An account of the discovery of King Tut's tomb, told by a (fictional) English girl who was drawn into the world of the key historical players. I enjoyed the parts set in Egypt, but the second half fell kind of flat. Still, a good read overall. There is a lovely friendship at its heart.
