Elephants Can Remember | Agatha Christie
70 posts | 64 read | 28 to read
"The Ravenscrofts didn't seem that kind of person. They seemed well balanced and placid..." And yet, twelve years earlier, the husband had shot the wife, and then himselfor perhaps it was the other way around, since sets of both of their fingerprints were on the gun, and the gun had fallen between them. The case haunts Ariadne Oliver, who had been a friend of the couple. The famous mystery novelist desires this real-life mystery solved, and calls upon Hercule Poirot to help her do so. Poirot is now a very old man, but his mind is as nimble and as sharp as ever and can still penetrate deep into the shadows. But as Poirot and Mrs. Oliver and Superintendent Spence reopen the long-closed case, a startling discovery awaits them. And if memory serves Poirot (and it does!), crimelike historyhas a tendency to repeat itself.

Even though I've seen dozens of movies and TV shows with her characters, I've never read an Agatha Christie novel. I don't think this was the one to start with, I found it boring and tedious, with a very obvious conclusion. Maybe I should have started with a better known classic like Murder on the Orient Express. 2 ⭐⭐
3rd and final book for #20in4 readathon @Andrew65

Ruthiella Yeah, this is late Christie. I recommend The ABC Murders as a good starting point for Poirot. Or begin at the beginning with The Mysterious Affair at Styles. 8mo
RamsFan1963 @Ruthiella Thanks for the suggestions. I have The A.B.C Murders on my TBR shelves 8mo
AlaMich This one is a good one as well. 8mo

Laughterhp I‘d also recommend trying And Then There Were None. It‘s a stand-alone with no Poirot or Marple. 8mo
rretzler Ditto The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express. I‘ve also been partial to Murder at the Vicarage. Also good IMO are Crooked House, Endless Night, Peril at End House, and Five Little Pigs. Hope you have a better experience next time. 8mo
Andrew65 Brilliant time, well done 👏👏👏🙌🥳🥳🍾🥂😍👍😊 Shame about the book. 8mo
Andrew65 And Then There Were None is her best one. 8mo

Splendid!!!
Finished this last night. I like how elephants are used in the book. The climax could be guessed a little beforehand but still this was a good read.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Library finally reopened by way of pickup service and I‘m so thrilled! I didn‘t even know what I was really in the mood for so I just said “A lot of Hercule Poirot.” This is my third in a row!

Continuing on with my journey on trying to read every Agatha Christie book. I enjoyed this one, but not as much as others. This was the first time I was able to guess what happened before the end... Maybe I'm just getting better at it? #doubtit #mystery 🤓🕵️

BookishMe Yes, the clues were easy to spot early on. I find that predicting the end doesn't make her books any less enjoyable for me ;D 2y

As always, I'm surprised to discover more new-to-me Christies! And I think #TryToRemember is basically how Poirot and Marple approach everyone they meet 😂 #WinterWonderland

Agatha always makes for a fun, easy, yet brain-exercising read. This is not one of her bests - she wrote it in 1972, when she was 82. While I enjoyed the mystery, and figured it out too, I felt that the romantic tragedy, the motivations, governesses, well-to-do people with estates, belonged to a different era, and found it overly melodramatic. I did enjoy that she write herself into the book as Mrs. Oliver, though. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Yeah I remember really not liking this one and never reading it ever again 😊 4y
Gezemice @MommyWantsToReadHerBook I can‘t re-read her, once I know the solution... Luckily I have only read about 8 so I have a long way to go :) 4y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @Gezemice maybe I just have a terrible memory 😂 but over the last 20+ years I've been able to reread quite a lot of her books without remembering who did it 😂 4y
See All 8 Comments
Gezemice @MommyWantsToReadHerBook Lol! Unfortunately I usually recall the solution even if I don‘t recall anything else. I read “The Mirror Cracked From Side to Side” and did not remember a thing, except that I have seen it in a movie a long time ago and I knew what happened... it was still enjoyable but figuring it out is half the fun. 4y
rabbitprincess I love the cover art on this one! 4y
MichelleScott_author I remember when this book came out. I was right in the middle of an Agatha Christie binge read, so it was perfect timing. 4y
Gezemice @Coffeeshopreviews Awesome! I like to read her occasionally. Great break between more difficult books. 4y
Gezemice @rabbitprincess The library often has old editions with original covers. This is a first edition from 1972. Seventies covers are often the whackiest! 4y

Well written and plotted with much twist that made the book engaging. It was predictable towards the end but intriguing nevertheless! I felt that this was much better than Murder on the Orient Express

This was a unique read. It was a little confusing in the middle, but the further along I got into the story the more thought-provoking it became. And at the end was the traditional Agatha Christie twist ending. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #ElephantsCanRemember #AgathaChristie #HerculePoirot #HerculePoirotSeries #book #books #bookzesty #bookzilla #bookzine #bookzone #bookxcess #bookcollection #bookcollector #bookcase #bookcases #bookcover #bookcovers #bookclub 💞💞💞

Only ⭐️⭐️⭐️ , which is disappointing for an Agatha book. It was a solid read until near the end, and then it seemed rushed, as if she‘d had a deadline with her publisher.

And the cover makes no sense. There is nothing in the text about bloody keys.

Nothing.

When the typo in your book holds a truth.

“As her son”, “Asher son”.

Asher is my son‘s name. ☺️

And why, oh why do Agatha Christie books always have typos?

Another great mystery by Agatha Christie. She never disappoints. I am truly addicted to her books. In this particular story, Poirot investigates what is believed to be a double suicide. He must go back in time to unravel what happened. 👍

February's Reading Agatha book finished with one day to Spare! It was better than the previous two se read, but It was one of the last Poirot books... He's older and not quite as I remembered him. The solution of the crime was really obvious in that one 🤷
