A classic Russian novel. Tolstoy when he‘s out of his comfort zone is far more interesting. Not quite as wonderful and earth shaking as Lolita, but it‘s certainly well written and a fun read. The kind of book you can read over a few months next to your bed.

I just don‘t know about this y‘all. I am on part 2 and somehow still have 23 hours left. In confusion I thought to check the chapter list because how many parts can a novel have and it has EIGHT PARTS people! And I mean, the story is charming? And the characters lively and entertaining? Still…. Eight parts, man…. That‘s a lot of parts.

It‘s not a bad book but the story got really slow and boring in a lot of chapters imo.
I really enjoyed Kitty and Levin‘s love story, probably my favorite part.
Anna‘s story was heartbreaking she made a lot of mistakes but she was still a victim to society and it got into her head so bad to a point where she had no faith or hope in anyone anymore.
Overall the book was beautifully written and talks about themes that are relevant to this day.

marleed I almost picked up this book thrifting last week, but decided I didn‘t want to put that reading pressure on myself when Dr Zhivago still sits unread on my shelves! 9mo
Christyco125 @SRWCF I may give it another shot either as a physical book or with a different voice actor. This one just dragged on. 9mo
SRWCF @Christyco125 I can see how this book could be boring as an audio book. It wasn't an easy read for me. Before starting the book, I went online and found a list of characters in order to keep them straight since I wasn't familiar with Russian names. I printed out the list and kept it with me at all times. I think that helped me to follow the story better. I hope you give it another chance. 🙂 9mo

I'm halfway through this reread. Since reading it the 1st time, I‘ve gotten married & had kids, it‘s amazing how different a book can feel when your experiences change. There are so many moments that resonate with me. The Kitty/Levin arch reminds me of Persuasion & Anna‘s story is heartbreaking in new ways when you consider the standard women were held to. Beautifully written with themes that are still relevant today, I can‘t wait to keep reading!

SamAnne Keep meaning to get to this one after finally reading War and Peace last year. 14mo

You gotta love Anna, but the novel should have been called “Constantine Levin” bc LT seemed much more more concerned with him. Levin‘s “solution” to the problem of living seems prosaic in light of the 20th and 21st centuries. Agricultural bliss. I live in New York. It just doesn‘t ring true.

After binge watching the mini series The Beautiful Lie on Netflix recently (based on Tolstoy's Anna Karenina) I've become obsessed with this story. I can't stop thinking about it. I have actually never even known the story before, although aware of the book.
So I've decided to sink my teeth into the novel today. Normally I'd be out at work from sunup til after sundown but once again all of my bookings were cancelled, so another week without pay...

i.besteph I didn‘t know about the Netflix series. Gotta check it out :) Did you know there‘s a movie starring Keira Knightley based on the book? 1y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Hi @I.be.Stef , yes I was aware of the movie but I had been avoiding watching it as I hadn't read the book yet, but then I decided to watch The Beautiful Lie. It's an Aussie series, set in modern day Australia so I was pulled in immediately, being an Aussie myself. Now I'm watching the BBC series (Anna Karenina - 2013) on YouTube. Same story of course with a few little changes and totally different time periods to modern Netflix series. 1y

Me parece maravilloso.

I failed to get through Anna Karenina as a teen cause it was just too long, but I love the movie so much I knew I needed to try again. This time it was a DREAM to read and I barely noticed how long it was. This penguin translation is phenomenal and I really recommend it. The prose was so beautiful and the characters‘ inner worlds and morality felt so vivid, not at all like ‘stodgy Victorian book people‘. Cant recommend highly enough

JenniferP Who‘s the translator for penguin? There are so many translations out there and I find the differences fascinating. 2y
