Alanna: The First Adventure
Alanna: The First Adventure: Song of the Lioness | Tamora Pierce
“From now on I’m Alan of Trebond, the younger twin. I’ll be a knight.” Alanna has always craved the adventure and daring allowed only for boys; her twin brother, Thom, yearns to learn the art of magic. So one day they decide to switch places. Disguised as a girl, Thom heads for the convent; Alanna, pretending to be a boy, is on her way to the castle of King Roald to begin her training as a page. But the road to knighthood is not an easy one. As Alanna masters the skills necessary for battle, she must also learn to control her heart and to learn who her enemies are. Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, Alanna’s first adventure begins . . .

I looooved this book. I wish I had known about Alanna when I was a tween! I love her boldness and the way she makes a goal for herself and sticks with it, even though it is incredibly hard. And I can‘t tell you guys how much I appreciate that Ms. Pierce wrote some of Alanna‘s coming-of-age stuff into the story: how her body is changing as she grows into a teenager 🙌🏻

I‘m excited for more of this series-I want to see Alanna achieve her big goal!

MarriedtoMrT I finally read this a few years ago and fell in love as well! My goal is to make it through all the Tortall quartets. I loved the next set, too, about Daine. Enjoy! 2mo

I can‘t believe I‘ve never read this series before!!

Late last night, I wanted a great fantasy story, so I searched my shelves for something similar to Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn which I LOVED. This one is just a little bit different but I‘m flying thru it and oh man, I sooo wish I‘d read it as a tween.

Have any of you read the Song of the Lioness books?

Beachesnbooks Looove Tamora Pierce! Read these books over & over when I was younger. Alanna is such a great heroine. 2mo
intothehallofbooks @Beachesnbooks This is my first Tamora Pierce story and I adored Alanna! I‘m glad I have the rest of this series on hand. I can‘t wait to recommend this to young people now, especially my own girls. 2mo
Beachesnbooks @intothehallofbooks Yes! If you loved Alanna you will love the rest of Tamora Pierce‘s heroines too. The Kel and Daine quartets are also great! 2mo

It‘s Episode 44 of my podcast, and I‘m reading — for the first time ever! — Tamora Pierce‘s Song of the Lioness Quartet. Claire Fallon from HuffPost and the Here to Make Friends podcast joins me to discuss the first book in the series, Alanna: The First Adventure, which raises questions of identity, gender, conformity, and whether or not violet eyes occur in nature... and we talk about it ALL, plus my love for Mulan. Link in bio to listen! 🎧

I really enjoyed this, my first foray into the world of Tortall. Alanna/Alan defies her father to become the knight she knows she is meant to be. I like her strong intuition & how she follows through to do what she feels is right. She‘s not gonna let anyone hold her back or determine her identity & she‘s building a support network to support the legend you can already see developing.

A tornado hit our city and our schools are closed. Everyone is okay but there is a lot of destruction and power outages. They haven't organized any support or volunteer centers yet so Since I can't work or volunteer, of course I should read instead! I was inspired by the quality of Tempests and Slaughter to start from the beginning of this world. Audio talent is not as good but still enjoying it!

Man, this was actually pretty fantatistic! I loved Alanna, and how ambitious she was. I loved the side characters, too. Some of them weren't super developed, but it's a short book and early #YA, so I forgive it. So, now, I have to read everything #tamorapierce has ever written. I already started book 2. Also, the #audiobook is super short, so it's easy to listen to. I liked the narrator, which can make or break an audiobook.

I have a confession-I've never read #tamorapierce. I read an ARC of Tempests and Slaughter and it was so good that I knew I finally had to start reading about this world. So I'm listening to #Alanna on audio, and I hope it's everything I've heard it is.

#audiobooks #newseries #bookconfessions #tortalla #

sloanghost Oh Alanna! My middle school jam was The Immortals (the series where Numair makes his adult appearance). Both quartets have definitely aged but imho they're still pretty darn good. And I think Circle of Magic has held up best to the ravages of time and cultural shift. 1y
jwashreads @sloanghost Yeah, I always worry when I start something as an adult that I should have read as a teen, because the genre has evolved since then. For instance, I read Eragon last year and just couldn't get into it. 1y

Jabberwocky The alanna books were my fave! I just finished a re read and actually bought the omnibus versions of that and two of the other quartets. 2y

josie281 One of my favorite series. The spin off series are not bad either. 2y
Vansa This is one of my absolute favourites when I was younger , and still is. In my opinion ( dare I say it), it's better than Earthsea and has better female characters, and just better characters overall. I wish this would get optioned now for a tv series just so it would get as much popularity as Game of Thrones. 2y
DefLeppard Oh my word someone else who loves Tamora Pierce, I am 38 and been a fan since the early 90s. One of my fave sets of hers and of course the Immortals quartet. Good choice. 😊 2y
DefLeppard @Vansa I sooooo agree it deserves a tv series a lot more than some of the other fantasy stuff out there. 2y
Skyrimir Pierce is amazing. All her female leads are so strong, I wish I had known about them when I was a kid too! She has a new book coming out next year that I‘m pretty excited about. 2y
emtobiasz Tamora Pierce's stuff is lovely, and I think her writing only gets stronger after the Alanna books. Definitely still a favorite! 2y
keggergoldy Agreed about her writing improving after this series. The story for this quartet is fun, tho. I'm a big fan of all of the books in this universe. 2y
Beachesnbooks I probably read this book a million times as a kid 😂 Love Tamora Pierce. 2y
minkyb Pierce is beloved in my family. Glad you enjoyed this. 2y
Vansa @Tamora1979 I know right ? It's such a good read, this series. I'm so glad so many people here have spoken of their love for Alanna!!! 2y
DefLeppard @Vansa I loved the Immortals quartet too the next series on. I have all her work so far, even the audio CDs of Melting stones when they said they were not releasing it as a book but subsequently did lol. I am guessing by my nickname on here it's obvious I am a little bit of a fan! 😂 2y
DefLeppard @SassenachTheBookWizard if you want beautiful covers the most gorgeous versions I have seen of the Song of the Lioness and the Immortals quartet are the 90s versions personally I hated the artwork on later editions and didn't like the "stylised" art they at one time did, it lacked the beauty of the David Wyatt artwork of the 90s that was used for the Immortals series. ? 2y

I decided to check in on my #LitsyAtoZ progress. It felt like I hadn't updated it in a long time but turns out I could only add one more title to my list. I have 8 letters left: F, J, N, Q, V, X, Y, Z.

I have some ideas for a few of the letters but not all. Recommendations welcome, especially for titles with great audiobooks! I was trying to do title only but I know that may not be realistic.

ScientistSam You might enjoy Jennifer Crusie's Fast Women for F. She writes really funny romance/"chick lit" 2y
ScientistSam And if you like YA fantasy there's Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series. The first book is Vampire Academy so it deals with V. 2y
Bookzombie I'm reading my first Julia Quinn for Q. If you decide to go by name too. (edited) 2y

xicanti I counted FORBIDDEN by Beverly Jenkins as my F book, and it was wonderful! I'm also listening to THE FIFTH SEASON by N.K. Jemisin right now, and the audiobook is wonderful. It'd be a great pick if you're willing to overlook the The. 2y
MarriedtoMrT @ScientistSam Thank you! These are both really good suggestions for me, so good I've already read both! I LOVED Vampire Academy. If you thinking anything else in the same vein, let me know! 2y
MarriedtoMrT @Bookzombie Julia Quinn is a good idea! 2y
MarriedtoMrT @Kristy_K Just got a downloadable copy from the library. My only worry, is this going to make me cry? 2y

#feministfriday I am cheered by the fact that Seth agrees it is entirely unfair that Alanna, as a girl, cannot be a knight or, indeed, anything she chooses to be. I am also pleased that he is not as blown away by this book as I was at his age. A strong female main character who chooses what she wants to do and then does it is not as strange or unusual to him as it was when I read this ❤️ #raisingreaders

I found this to be an interesting reread since it had been quite a few years. This book is a classic and Tamora Pierce's books will always be dear to my heart. I had a lot of fun discussing this book over some delicious Mediterranean food with my best friend and delighting in how much our perspectives have changed over the years (mostly about how our young selves had loved Jonathan, and how awkward the age differences are). 😂

I first met Alanna when I was an 11yo sixth grader. My mother heard about this series, read it, loved it, gave me these books; I in turn loaned them to my best friend Ana & we've been #Tortall fans ever since. These are my original copies which I've owned for 24 years. They are battered & worn & taped up & so very loved. I reread something #Tortall at least once a year & Song of the Lioness Quartet is my OG fave.
