The Stone Circle
The Stone Circle: The Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries 11 | Elly Griffiths
'My favourite series' Val McDermid DCI Nelson has been receiving threatening letters telling him to 'go to the stone circle and rescue the innocent who is buried there'. He is shaken, not only because children are very much on his mind, with Michelle's baby due to be born, but because although the letters are anonymous, they are somehow familiar. They read like the letters that first drew him into the case of The Crossing Places, and to Ruth. But the author of those letters is dead. Or are they? Meanwhile Ruth is working on a dig in the Saltmarsh - another henge, known by the archaeologists as the stone circle - trying not to think about the baby. Then bones are found on the site, and identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a twelve-year-old girl who disappeared thirty years ago. As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to that first case of The Crossing Places, and to Scarlett Henderson, the girl Nelson couldn't save. The past is reaching out for Ruth and Nelson, and its grip is deadly.

11th in the Ruth Galloway series follows the usual formula with the discovery of bones at an excavation, which prove to be those of a recent unsolved crime. The plot is well done, and at book 11, I have invested in the characters, although I feel that as the series draws to a close, I think I'll be ready to leave them behind as opposed to many series where I am sorry to close that last page.

I‘m really enjoying these books. Thank you @CarolynM for two more to read. Dr Ruth is an archeologist like the authors husband , so lots of interesting facts scattered through the book. I love that not all the main characters are detectives or police officers.

TheSpineView This is a great series! 11mo
Centique Wow you have read so many books since I last read your page! Good on you 🙌 11mo
Jeg @Centique I've been using it as a therapy. Reading detective type books is a great escape I'm finding. I'm slowing down a bit now. 10mo

This is the closest to a “so-so“ of any in this series so far-this is the 11th. It refers back quite a bit to the first in the series, which I only partially remember. Maybe some of the themes, motivations, similar characters are starting to be repetitious? I‘m getting a little bit tired of the Ruth/Nelson…situation Ms. Griffiths has Ruth applying for a job at Cambridge, a little change of scene might be just what the series needs.

MuddyPuddle Still great storytelling!! 1y

Another henge, another unidentified body. But, wait, there are 2 bodies, and one is not ancient. Nelson and Ruth find themselves working a familiar scenario. Ruth also thinks she‘s seen a ghost, but it‘s not who she thinks it is. Stone circles, mysterious rituals, dead girls, kidnapping, revelation upon revelation. This novel is packed! And so satisfying. This series just gets better and better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Another great book in this series. I read it in read time. I am emotionally invested in the lives of the characters I feel like I am involved in a soap opera. 4.5⭐

Another book for the #SeriesRead2022 challenge !

tokorowilliamwallace Oh, I might have to hop onto this challenge, even though the attention required for series reading (or watching) comes hard for me. But I started Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth and have two volumes (not in order) of Outlander, by recommendation, so I can try for those. I also have two volumes now in Corean Chronicles by Modesitt, Jr. and for Elizabeth George, and have been picking a lot of old Ed McBain volumes.

Enjoyable as the eleventh in an ongoing series, I thought the mystery was a bit weak. It harks back to the first book in the series and feels like a kind of remix, even though it‘s not. Fun, but not where I‘d recommend anyone to start.

With Christmas more or less all packed away it‘s time to sit down & see what‘s happening down in Norfolk with Ruth & Nelson & co. I think I come back to this series for the characters more than the mysteries. I‘m not saying the mysteries are bad (they aren‘t) but they are only one component of my enjoyment of this series.

Ruth and Nelson receive anonymous letters eerily reminiscent of those in the first book. But Erik is dead, isn't he?

The person I had marked down as the culprit was guilty but not of the main crime. Still, I was half right. We had enough archaeology and Cathbad to keep me going, as I was wondering whether to give up on this series.

EadieB @erzascarletbookgasm You need to read this series as it is one of the best series! Ask @Andrew65 he will say the same thing! 4y
Andrew65 @erzascarletbookgasm @EadieB I will say the same thing, like Eadie I love this series, one of my favourites. An interesting female lead, who is an archaeologist, alongside a slightly cantankerous lead detective she has feelings for. Throw in a Druid and a great group of characters and what more could you want, oh yes of course there are also murders and a historical connection. @kspenmoll 4y

The past is reaching out for Ruth and Nelson as they have been receiving threatening letters regarding finding the body of Margaret Lacey who was murdered 30 years ago. I enjoyed Griffiths writing, well-drawn characters and plot mixed with archeology and murder. The series should be read in order in regards to the complex relationships involved. Recommended to those who love British mystery thrillers.

Another great instalment in the series. The mystery is interesting though I found myself more curious about their own lives than the murder. I hadn't figured out the killer which is always a good thing. The story itself is steady and detailed. The ending was really good and left me wanting another story. I need to know what will happen with Ruth and Nelson, I'm still not sure how I want it to finally end. I love Cathbad. 4*

This is my favorite mystery series, and this was another good reading experience. The case echos the one in the first book, and there are several connections to the original story. As always, there‘s just as much happening between the recurring characters as in the mystery. I can‘t wait to see what‘s next for Ruth.

PatriciaU This one was so much better than The Dark Angel. I feel like Ruth got lost a bit in the weird triangle with Nelson & Michelle. Stone Circle brings back to feisty Ruth from the early books. 5y

ARC of the 11rh in the Ruth Galloway series. A 2nd henge is found near the site of the henge from Ruth and Nelson‘s 1st case together. Then both Ruth and Nelson start to receive letters very like those from that case-but the original writer is dead. Things really start to heat up when the bones of a young female are found at the henge site. Love this series-fantastic addition. Interesting mystery and series is moved along well. 4.5/5.0 ⭐️ #2019

Thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers and NetGalley for a copy of this book for an honest review.

11th installment Ruth Galloway series, Ruth and DCI Nelson are haunted by a ghost from their past, just as their future lands on shaky ground. They have received letters similar to those from the past and Ruth has discovered more human bones during her present archeological dig called The Stone Circle, another henge on the saltmarsh.

EadieB They are the bones of Margaret Lacey, a 12 year-old girl who went missing 30 years ago. The head archeologist is Leif Anderssen, son of Eric Anderssen, friend of Ruth's from years ago. 5y
EadieB This series needs to be read in order as the characters drive the storyline. My favorite part of the series is reading about the complex situation between Nelson and the two loves of his life, his wife Michelle and his mistress Ruth. Nelson and Michelle are happy about their new baby, George, and decide it's time to tell their daughters that Ruth's Kate is also their sister. The secret is not received too well by Laura and Rebecca. 5y
EadieB Elly Griffiths is a beautiful writer and I enjoy her descriptions of the Norfolk area and the saltmarsh. Her characters are well-drawn and the plots a mixture of archeology and murder. I'm looking forward to the 12th installment and recommend this series to those who love mystery thrillers from England. 5y
