Coffin Road | Peter May
post image
Pickpick

After wading through The Priory, I was ready for something completely opposite and dived into this thriller by Peter May. I've read several of May's books in the past and enjoyed every one of them, and this was no exception. The story opens with a man staggering onto the beach from the sea, wounded and borderline-hypothermic. He has no idea who he is or where he comes from, and as he begins to piece together this own story, he starts to realize⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) that he may have been living a lie... The story is pacey and engaging, and while I couldn't say that I was shocked by any of the twists, I still felt compelled to keep turning the pages.

I read several of Thayne's books last year and really enjoyed them, so I was excited to read her newest, which happens to be Christmasy!! This one was due back at the library so I had to read it before #WinterGames begin, but it was actually just the piece of relaxing fluff that I need. I would definitely recommend this one if you enjoy romances that don't make you think too much 😂 It was also clean, which I like, plus it took me to Wyoming ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) for both #SeparatedbyaPondTour and #ReadtheUSA2021 !! @Andrew65

This one checked off loads of prompts for my family's giant Christmas bingo card (13x13... we're filling in prompts with books and movies LOL) so it would definitely be a good pick for WinterGames as well!!

Lizpixie I‘m so happy I‘m on the same #WinterGames2021 team, the #MistletoeManiacs🎄💚❤️💚❤️ 2y

It had been a while since I read this one, so while I had a vague memory of one of the twists, I couldn't exactly remember how it all came together. I really enjoyed the pacing here, although having the little group of relatives of the victims decide to come together and "help" with the case did feel slightly contrived lol Still good fun here. I had to take a picture of both covers of this edition since I love the quote on the back.

IndoorDame Great edition! 2y

This really was just the perfect bit of fluff to read between mysteries. Don't worry too much about the world-building or major character development, just go along for the ride. Snarky, sexy, and sassy, I overall enjoyed this one even if I don't see myself reading it again. I also could have done without all the casual f-bombs; I'm not a huge fan of being bombarded with vulgar language in my fluff reads.

Clwojick 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
aroc Haha! I was shocked my the amount of f bombs too! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @aroc - I know everyone has their personal preferences, but I just don't enjoy it in my fluff reading especially, and these were multiple times per chapter, not just moments of intense emotion lol Ah well, still a fun little read!! 2y
marleed I agree. I can picture this series being adapted as a PG - PG13 effort - that‘s really where the fun parts of this story existed for me. A Hocus Pocus for the 2020s. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @marleed - Yes!! I would totally be into that. Goodreads says that this is the first book in a series, but a second book isn't listed yet. I would definitely be interested to see where the author goes with the concept, though! 2y
kimmypete1 This is my next print read. Can‘t wait to dive in! 2y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 2y
TheAromaofBooks @kimmypete1 - It was just the relaxation I needed after reading five detective novels in a row haha 2y

I enjoyed this clean romance for the most part, but it was, frankly, a bit on the boring side. The ending also got rather melodramatic. But if you are just looking for something relaxing & sweet, this one should fit the bill. And it also knocked off Iowa for #ReadtheUSA2021 & #SeparatedbyaPondTour @Andrew65

This one wasn't especially on my radar, but it was August's pick for #thatsclassic and seeing as it is quite short, I thought it was a great time to add another beautiful Penguin paperback to my collection!!

This is definitely a book that had me wondering how I would have felt about it if I hadn't known the spoiler. The writing is super atmospheric & I loved it. Stevenson is one of those authors that every time I actually read one of his books⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I really enjoy it, yet I don't seem to go out of my way to find them!

This edition also includes a second short story called The Bottle Imp. I really liked that one, too, plus it took me to Hawaii (of all places) for #ReadtheUSA2021 and #SeparatedbyaPondTour ...as long as it counts that I “went“ there before Hawaii was actually a state!!

LitStephanie Thanks for posting a review! I have seen a play of the story but never considered reading it before now. 3y

TheAromaofBooks @LitStephanie - It's a super fast read, too - less than a hundred pages. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - Thank you!! Lately, as I've been reading classics I don't already own, I've been purchasing a copy when I can do so reasonably, and I'm kind of in love with these Penguin paperbacks. The spines are pretty, too!!! 3y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks can I ask where you get yours? At a bookstore? Online? 3y
LitStephanie @TheAromaofBooks wow, that makes me want to read it more! 3y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 I‘ve not read this yet. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - I got it from Book Depository. For some reason, I find their website easier to navigate when I am looking for a specific edition. They also sell the UK editions of books, since that is where they are located, & I think these Penguin editions are all UK, not American, although I could be wrong on that one haha 3y
robinb @TheAromaofBooks I‘ve never shopped with them before. I‘ll have to look them up and browse. Thanks! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @robinb - It's my go-to for when I'm looking for a UK edition. Why does the UK get all the beautiful covers??? 3y
UwannaPublishme Great review! Now I really want to read this one. Hope you‘re enjoying your summer, Sarah! It‘s going by too fast! 🤗 3y
TheAromaofBooks @UwannaPublishme - Thanks, Donna!!! Our summer is great but soooo busy!!!! I'm a million years behind on all my penpal writing, too! I really love how summer is full of outdoors & garden stuff, but also am looking forward to the slower, cozier pace of winter. I'll try to write soon - I miss you!!! 3y
UwannaPublishme Ha! I think I‘m as far behind as you are! I‘m still answering letters from July! 😁 Miss you and #Bookspin! I may catch up this month. 🤞🏻❤️ 3y

New petition to force all books to include a book map! How hard is it, especially when it involves real places?! Finally printed off my own map, only to discover little tidbits like Mexican Water is actually a town and Lake Powell is REALLY far away from Albuquerque. I'm overall enjoying this series, whose MC is law enforcement for the Navajo nation. This one was published in 1978 & involved the AIM, which I only had a vague knowledge of. It's ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) somewhat frustrating because since it's more or less current history to when Hillerman is writing, he doesn't give a lot of explanations, which led to even more research for me haha These are kind of odd mysteries - Joe Leaphorn is the MC, but after three books I know literally nothing about his personal life, despite the fact that we're told repeatedly that family is incredibly important to the Navajo people. I'm not even sure if he's ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) married or where he lives since he seems to spend most of his time wandering around and camping out of his truck. The mysteries themselves are decent & there are some interesting bits about Native American culture but the overall impersonal writing style is a little odd for me. However, I'm still planning to read the next few books in the series.

eeclayton I'd definitely sign that petition. I usually look up places on google maps, but it'd be so much nicer and way more convenient to just flip to an automatically included map page in the book! 3y

audraelizabeth Im obsessed with maps in books. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton @audraelizabeth - the other book I'm reading is about a road trip on Route 66 - doesn't a map seem like a natural fit for a story ABOUT A ROAD TRIP!?!? I neeeeed maps!! In the Hillerman books, half the story is about where this guy is going & the lack of map meant I had zero concept of how far he's traveling. You can see that it's an immense amount of land. Just telling me he went from Window Rock to Tuba City isn't very informative! 3y
audraelizabeth @TheAromaofBooks Exactly and fantasy novels not set on this planet need a map. 3y
bookandbedandtea I read about half of the Tony Hillerman books when I was in high school and enjoyed them. I should definitely revisit them. I totally agree about book maps, btw! 3y
Smarkies Agreed! I would sign that petition. I have really bad sense of direction and map helps put things into perspective. 😂😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea - I'm on the fourth one now and really enjoying the unique setting/culture (especially now that I've printed off a map haha) They're strangely impersonal reads, but that may change as the series continues. 3y
Andrew65 I support you in this, love maps in books. 3y

This was an #LMPBC book & I quite enjoyed it, as I do most Heyer stories. This one did get a little rambly, & while stuttering in real life doesn't bother, having to c-c-constantly r-r-read it b-b-began to get old. But overall, it was a bunch of entertaining shenanigans. @Chrissyreadit I should get this in the mail to you next week!! I've so enjoyed reading along with you all!!

sharread Tthhhaattt would babe annoying. 😁 3y
TheAromaofBooks @sharread - My brain can't just read the word; so basically my brain had to stutter every time that character was talking 😂 Someone close to me has a problem with stuttering/blanking out on words & talking to her in real life doesn't bother me at all. It's just something about it being in print! 3y

Mehso-so

I've said it before & I will say it again, Litsy needs a “WTF“ option for books that are batshit crazy but compulsively readable. I blew through this entire book in one evening because I did not want to put it down - despite the fact that no one was particularly likable, the plot was completely unbelievable, every twist just made the story more absurd, & the more I think about it the more questions I have... But I couldn't stop reading!! ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Does that make it a Pick or a Pan? 2* or 4*? Do I rate it on whether I would recommend it to others or on how much I wanted to keep reading when I was reading it? It's hard to say, so I guess I'm just going middle of the ground for my rating. If you don't mind thrillers that are just genuinely over-the-top ridiculous, this may be the read for you 😂 3y
TheLudicReader Peter Swanson in a nutshell. I haven‘t read this one, but I have read a couple others. I really liked 3y

Bookwormjillk Ha! So true! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @TheLudicReader - It's true!! I've read several of Swanson's novels & every time I get to the end & think “WHY?!“ - but I can't stop reading them! I haven't read The Kind Worth Killing, but I've read a few others & they're just sooo addictive! I especially enjoyed 3y
Eggbeater I like the WTF option! 3y
MidnightBookGirl I will totally be reading this because I enjoy WTF books, and Swanson doesn't disappoint in that department. 😆 3y
In_the_stacks Haha I want to read this now 😬 3y
bookandbedandtea Your review is brilliant! This is on my TBR and I can't decide if I'm now more or less interested in reading it. 🤔 3y
bibliobard I would love a WTF option 😂 3y
JackOBotts Yes! I feel like I would give a WTF to 3y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y
Megabooks Litsy definitely needs a WTF option!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Eggbeater @bibliobard @JackOBotts @Megabooks - There are just so many books that I didn't exactly like but also don't regret reading - and I feel like an author deserves some kudos for sucking me in against my will! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @MidnightBookGirl @In_the_stacks @bookandbedandtea - All of Swanson's books are a little bit on the ridiculous side, but this one is the most over-the-top one that I've read yet lol But I did love the claustrophobic atmosphere of being trapped on the island. 3y
