#BelowZer00s The 2000‘s were a veritable ✔️ list of life moments for me as I whizzed through my 20s: graduated college, completed my master‘s, married, had a kid.

These are some of the 📚 and 🎥 📺 that helped me on my way during late night feedings or post-exam vacations.

Plus 🐊. I lived in off brand Croc‘s for a big part of that decade. 🤣

I'm very late to the game with this book, but I wanted the last book I finished for 2019 to be one that's been on my TBR for a long time.

This book deserves all the praise it's gotten over the years. It opened my eyes to so much. The characters were complex and well-developed which made the story seem to fly by. I'll definitely have to read more by this author now.

For years people have said, "you've NEVER read The Kite Runner?!" Because somehow this blockbuster must-read had passed me by. And so now I have.
And welp, I didn't love it. ? The initial story of the boys' friendship and life in Afghanistan was enjoyable, but the middle section.after Amir moves to the US was dull, and then the last part was maudlin, full of obvious coincidences and overwrought reflections. ⬇️

merelybookish I suspect this book fit a post 9/11,early aughts zeigeist when a redemptive, humanizing book about Afghanistan met a need. But I'm not sure this is a particularly good book. The writing lacks nuance and felt amateurish. 4w
Lcsmcat Some books are for the moment, and some books last. I read this close to its publication, and liked it, but don‘t feel a need to reread it. (One reason I read more from the back list!) 4w
Butterfinger I know why it stuck with me. I lead a sheltered life and I was so shocked with the abuse of the young boy. I couldn't believe the author wrote that. I now know better, but it shocked me. 4w
See All 8 Comments
Centique @Butterfinger yes it stuck with me for that reason too. Also I think it was my first glimpse at a refugee flight from a country and the horror of that situation really affected me. I think you‘re right @merelybookish some books are of their time - when you read them later on sometimes they‘ve lost the edge they had in that moment. 4w
merelybookish @Lcsmcat Very true! This book was published in 2003 which isn't that long ago but yet a lot has changed since then! 4w
merelybookish @Butterfinger I think that is still shocking,.tbh. Or it took me by surprise as well. And as a writer, I thought he handled it pretty well, being honest without being salacious. 4w
merelybookish @Centique That makes sense and there were aspects of the book that were affecting -- like their escape.. And I liked getting a better understanding of Afghanistan. 4w
Butterfinger @merelybookish I guess I was trying to say it was the first time I saw it in a book. I'm not desensitized to it by any means now, but I know it is real because of this book. I cried and was frustrated for days. Maybe I should have said it was the first that made me aware of human trafficking. 🤔 4w

Really loved the writing style of this book.

There‘s some pretty big time jumps, where the author “conveniently” leaves out several years, or even decades. While this didn‘t bother me too much, I wonder if it would have been better formatted as a trilogy, rather than one single book.

Historical Fiction.

Dec 11th-14th

My brother gave it to me

Young boy Amir, living in Afghanistan struggles to fit in with his country and the world. From younger childhood trauma affecting him to how he is today, and a struggle of making friends truly sends him spiraling down a dark tunnel. This story is filled with betrayal, friendships, and sadness. This book also tackles some real world issues today which is very inspirational.

Unpopular opinion time: The Kite Runner wasn't as good as I expected it to be. That is not to say that it was bad, because it wasn't. I enjoyed the story, but I disliked how conveniently it was moved along at some places, the whole circle-of-life idea that was consistently present throughout the book. There were too many convenient accidents that were supposed to give poetic justice to wrong-doers and I felt like that was a bit overdone.

This is a historical fiction book about a boy named Amir during events such as the fall of the Afghanistan monarchy and the rise of the Taliban regime. This would be a good book to use with high school students. The teaching strategy I would use with this book would be independent reading. #ucflae3414f19

ChrisC I would offer a variety of references materials at the students‘ instructional level for independent use as my ELL strategy. UDL principle 4.2 optimize access to tools and assistive technology. This principle will provide students multiple means of action and expression. 3mo

Another book I read as a teenager that I remember having an impact.
I had a bit of a scroll on goodreads and it seems most people agree; I was surprised at the venom in some of the one star reviews though! I guess if you dislike something very popular you have to hate it extra hard? Ah well, I loved it so I guess I'm just one of the saps that agrees with the crowd on this one 🤷‍♀️

cherinium I hate seeing reviews like that. I guess they feel like they have to justify why they don't agree with the crowd. I thought this story was heartbreakingly beautiful. 4mo

100 pages in, the story is already heartbreaking 😢 And having read Khaled before, I don't think I'm ready for whatever it is about to come in the next 300 pages.

Reggie That‘s why I haven‘t read anything else by him. Cause he is a great writer, but I don‘t know if I‘ll ever be emotionally ready. 6mo
Davor @Reggie I totally get that! I am actually the opposite, I'm more drawn to books that I know will be emotionally draining, I like putting myself through the torture even though I still complain about it 🤣 6mo

Aren't we all just chasing after love and approval from someone that matters to us? Do you know what it's like to live your life with regrets circling round the back of your mind? This story captures how painful that journey can be and it makes you feel like you are right there with him. I don't recommend this for anyone under 18 but definitely 10/10 ⭐

“For you, a thousand times over.” A book with heartwarming and heart wrenching parts. It tells the story of brotherly love and the trials of life - secrets, betrayal, and, ultimately, a second chance to right a terrible wrong. It takes place in Afghanistan and also talks about life before and after the Taliban, and this comes from an Afghani writer - a perspective not often seen in the Western world. I couldn‘t put it down!

I was a bit ‘meh‘ about this book up to about 40 per cent, them BAM, it hit me right in the heart. Encompassing Afghanistan, Pakistan and the USA over a couple of decades and conveying the troubles through the eyes of Amir, a twelve-year-old boy. This story takes you on his journey into adulthood, his family, and how different his life has become and could have been. Hosseini‘s writing is heartfelt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
