This is not the usual Murakami but I enjoyed it tremendously! Seven short stories about men and their experiences and relationships with women, that simply strike a chord.

I was excited to read something from Haruki Murakami but this collection was just okay. I loved one or two of the stories but the others were just not that interesting.

I have mixed feelings about this book, b/n pick & so-so. This is my first Murukami book, not what I expected 😒. Stories are ok, I liked few. But most of the stories are about heartbreak & monotonous. I like the first story. May be I need to read his novel.

Won this in a Goodreads Giveaway 🤩. Pretty excited considering I‘ve only read one Murakami that was assigned to me in college, and I‘m sure I didn‘t understand it (nor do I remember anything about it except the title). Hoping this starts a Murakami deep dive 🤿

Men without women is a collection of short stories.
I am not truly a fan of the short story because I love to be with characters longer I want to feel them.
This was my first reading short story collection.
I would say not all the stories in the book you would like.My favourite stories were 1st and the last one.

But maybe short stories are not my thing.
But I am not giving up.

There were moments of this book that shone for me and felt like the magic of other Murakami books. The reader is left a bit hollow towards the end, but it is worth a try!

This book will make you love short stories.

Most of these stories almost work, but the women are so uninteresting. Maybe if I were pining away for a lost love, I would have liked it better.

I‘m hesitant to pan a book written in a foreign language with possible questionable translation, but I only enjoyed two of these stories. The women in this book were very one dimensional and acted simply as a mirror of the feelings of the men in the stories. It wasn‘t a great collection, but I did like Kirby Heybourne‘s narration.

Cover art-is a woman a man‘s missing piece? According to Murakami, not necessarily. But without women, men‘s lives are different, perhaps quirkier. Short story collections can be hit-and-miss for me. I liked Independent Organ, but the rest were okay or meh. There are 7 stories about single men and what roles women (and their exes or lovers) play in their lives.

Murakami is one of my favorite authors but this collection did not seem like his best. All feature male protagonists in different stages of relationships with women. There are the famous motifs of lonely men, Jazz, cafes, the urban environment, and cats. I enjoyed Drive My Car, Yesterday, Kino and Samsa in Love. I don‘t care much for Scherezade, The Independent Organ, and Men Without Women. #AuthorAMonth

Have never read his books so thought I‘d start with stories.

This is my favourite read of Nov 2019. Handcrafted stories that leave you speechless. Loved to see Murakami's version of Gregor Samsa, Justice Well Served! Kafka would be proud to see Samsa getting some well deserved love after a buggy life since 1915 :) Some quotes from this book hit you right at the spot 💘!
Now I have Percy Faith on loop thanks to Murakami!

Just finished the first story and I'm loving it!

Started this one a while back (at the snow ❄😊⛄) but couldn't really get into it. I finally finished it but did not enjoy it. A series of short stories that left me with more questions than answers. ⭐⭐

Murakami writes great short stories, but whenever I read them after one of his novels I feel a bit cheated or shorted after finishing one. I think because right at the point where I start to become invested & interested in a character, the story ends, sometimes abruptly.

I didn't love every story but I do love his writing!

First Murakami and I enjoyed it. As often goes for short story collections, some more than others. I feel like Murakami's writing is for me a bit like when others read poetry, that is to say, you like it or you don't but can't necessarily explain why or even say if you "get it." I think some of the stories need more time than others to sink in.

Thoughts on Murakami's writing?

So we begin the resurgence of our book club with one of my favorite authors 💛🧡❤️

The stories in this collection are about loneliness of men and how their lives are punctuated by women who are absent. The stories talk about missed opportunities and how the men find it difficult to stay connected without the women in their lives. Some of the stories appeal immediately, while others linger and start to make sense upon deep introspection. Not all stories are great, but there is a lot to like in the book.

Cosa vuol dire amare? Quanta importanza ha una donna nella vita di un uomo ? Murakami tenta di dare una risposta a queste domande e lo fa attraverso una serie di racconti pressapoco brevi in cui vari uomini si scontrano col sentimento devastante ed essenziale dell'amore creando con esso un legame che sia altresì distruttivo o/e rigenerante.
Non so se quella di Murakami è una risposta o una supposizione ma leggerlo vale sempre la pena.

I‘m moving to a new city in a month & I found a book club group on Facebook! Their motto: “We like to read, and we like wine. And food.” Does it get any better than this?! 📚🍷😍
I am sooo excited to try this out. Being a part of a book club has been something I‘ve been wanting to try for pretty much my entire life. I cannot wait to meet new people & talk to them about my favorite thing – books!

Both surreal and real! My first Murakami, and definitely not my last. Good thing I feel this way, as quite a few of his works are on the #1001Books list (this short story collection isn‘t included in the list).

About time I started audiobooking at work. Of course it has to be my favorite author.

Men without women. This books takes you to a space you wouldn't be able to go by yourself.

A good collection of short stories. I liked a few of them such as Kino, Drive My Car, Samsa in Love and Scheherazade. But none of them blew my mind like his other books. Definitely a good one time read for me. And it's a Murakami after all. His books are always worth the time😊 3/5

An excellent collection of short stories. My first Murakami, and certainly not my last. Kudos to the translators for their work.

Trying to ease the brain with this one #holidaymode

This is my third Murakami. I try so hard to like his books, but I just don't. I thought reading a short story collection might be more enjoyable for me, but it wasn't. Half the stories bored me and the other half I have no idea what was going on. Murakami had a tendency to end storied without a conclusion and it bugs the heck out of me. I dislike ending a book with more questions than answers. Sigh...

If you don‘t know what you‘re looking for, it‘s not easy to look for it.

Decided to take my coffee and book break outside this morning, as it is not too hot out yet. Hope I can finish this book before book club this evening, but after three Murakami books I might have officially decided that I am truly not a fan unfortunately. #bookclub

Picked up this Murakami paperback at a local bookstore as I had no weekend plans. And it hasn't failed to amuse me. Some wonderful writing there!

There were a lot of cringy male gaze moments in this collection but ehhh, it's Murakami. I freakin' love his stories, regardless. (Plus I got a bingo, ha!)
