Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe | Benjamin Alire Saenz
This Printz Honor Book is a tender, honest exploration of identity (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship.Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendshipthe kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Oh gosh, this was lovely 🥰. This is a book I added to my #tbr from Litsy recommendations when I first joined. Glad I finally got to it, and just before the movie comes out. Will be recommending it to my own adolescent sons next.

A coming of age story from 15yr old Ari‘s POV. Ari is a Mexican American boy growing up in CA in the 80s. He befriends another teen boy who is the opposite of him. They have conversations that are not normal for boys that age but it made sense for their personalities. I hate the added “romantic” part, why can‘t these young men just be childhood best friends? This was about loyalty and learning what that means at an important age. Book #62 in 2022

I‘m going to be honest, I read like twenty pages of this and was convinced I wouldn‘t like it for reasons based purely on the tone. But I stuck with it even after pg. 80 out of fear of disappointing my mother as she insisted I read this someday. By pg. 100 I was hooked. It just sucked me in. I never found myself spacing out. It was amazing how you could feel the character development in the tone even as Ari went from lonely and sad to happy.5🌟 ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ I just want to ask real quick, is it worth reading the second one? I‘ve heard a lot of bad things and want to know if I‘m wasting my time. 4mo

At first I wasn‘t exactly sure whether or not I liked this book. I loved some things and hated others. It had an interesting story in some places but I found myself getting bored in others. All the parents are really interesting characters that I loved a lot! I think Ari and Dante‘s growth was really nice! I would definitely recommend it but not to everyone. I don‘t regret reading it and I really loved it in some places, especially the end.

A beautiful five star coming-of-age novel about two Mexican-American boys discovering their identity and sexuality in the 80's. Loved the stream-of-consciousness writing, the quotes, the way it portrayed people dealing with trauma differently, and the familial relationships.

Another book I‘ve been waiting a long time to read with a hold that came in just in the nick of time. I didn‘t know Lin-Manuel Miranda read this one. I‘m even more excited for it now. I think I have just enough time left in Pride Month to get through this one. I won‘t have the second book for about 3 weeks, but that‘s okay. I think we need Pride all year round at this point.

This book is an absolute gem. It‘s so beyond wholesome and real. As adults, I think we lose the joy of simple things, and Saenz brought that back in this coming of age tale. The secrets of the universe are found everywhere, you just need to look. It‘s beautiful.

Pride Month: Day Five! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

These two books are super sweet and always make me feel so warm and happy when I think about them! 🥰 Taking place in the 80's, it features two very different high school boys who become friends and then fall in love. The pace of their relationship sets the mood for these books, which is very slow moving and beautiful -like watching a flower unfurl! 🌺

While there are aspects of this that feel a bit cliche, I enjoyed reading it. I clicked with Ari‘s thoughtful yet conflicted perspective. I love that the parents were a vital part of the story, that they were loving but imperfect. And the portrayal of a young person‘s coming to terms with their sexuality (and being concerned what parents will think/not admitting it to yourself) was honest. Once I got into it, I had trouble putting it down.

I think this book suffered from the hype around it because I went in expecting something amazing and found something mediocre

This isn't a bad book. Its not my kind of book, I found it stylistically challenging and the emo philosophizing was irritating.

I didn't connect with it in the way that I wanted to. I may return to it when I don't have covid as I may have more patience for it, I don't know. I'm disappointed

BkClubCare Sometimes, I want NOT to be excited for a book. It can really mess with enjoyment! 9mo
PuddleJumper @BkClubCare It really can and it's not the books fault! 9mo
BkClubCare @PuddleJumper - and, to me? This means that I need to be a bit more generous sometimes, that mood/time/space/magic can really play a part in that binary LIKE or NOT. #smiles 9mo
