Rage Becomes Her
Rage Becomes Her | Soraya Chemaly
A conversation-shifting book urging 21st-century women to understand their anger, embrace its power, and use it as a tool for positive change 'How many women cry when angry because we've held it in for so long? How many discover that anger turned inward is depression? Soraya Chemaly's Rage Becomes Her will be good for women. After all, women have a lot to be angry about.' GLORIA STEINEM Women are angry, and it isn't hard to figure out why. We are underpaid, overworked, thwarted and diminished. The assertive among us are labelled bitches, while the expressive among us are considered shrill. We are told to stand down when we have an opinion and to calm down when we are fired up. And when we somehow manage to put one high heel-battered foot in front of the other despite all of this, we're asked if it would kill us to smile. We are mad as hell, and that's completely okay. Because contrary to the endless barrage of self-help rhetoric about anger management and letting go, the reality is that our rage is the most important resource we have as women, a force for creation rather than destruction, our sharpest tool against both personal and political oppression. Anger is not what gets in our way, it is our way. All we need to do is own it. This is a pitch perfect, engaging, and accessible credo written by one of todays most influential feminists. Analysing female anger as it relates to topics like self-worth, objectification, pain, care, fear, silence, and denial, Soraya illuminates how and why we repress our anger, revealing the harm that this causes, and helping us recognise the liberating power of owning our anger and marshalling it as a vital tool for positive change. Just as Quiet brought about a new embrace of introversion, Rage Becomes Her will bring about an embrace of feminine anger that will leave women feeling liberated, inspired and connected to an entire universe of women who are no longer interested in making nice.

I first heard about Chemaly‘s book on The Reading Women podcast. After listening to their interview with her I immediately added the book to my TBR. Having finally gotten around to reading this I found this both an informative as well as a difficult read. It made me think a lot about different situations I have found myself in while also becoming angry and disheartened at times while reading. While not for everyone, still a good read. #NFNov

This is a #mustread. Such a great book with tons of information for everyone, not just women.

I listened to this on audiobook and when I finished I immediately ordered a print copy so that I can read it again and take notes.

Hooked_on_books This has been sitting in my “soon” TBR area for a while. I look forward to it. I loved 4mo

Bought this in January at Eagle Harbor Books on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, and I‘ve had it on my TBR plan ever since. It‘s appropriate as I am currently furious with a host of people and topics that boil down to racism, sexism, homophobia, and patriarchal control over women‘s bodies via fatphobia. Soooo yep. 🧐🤬

Apparently my capacity for reading books about women‘s rage is endless. Must have something to do with my own constant simmering low level rage about the state of the world. 🤬

saresmoore Well said. 9mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! I‘ve felt that way lately too! This one is up next for me in that category....if my library hold ever comes in. I am glad to see that it‘s popular though. 9mo
suzisteffen It‘s on my nonfiction reading plan for August, but it might be too hot to read something this fiery then. I might have to read it sooner. 9mo
Izai.Amorim If used in a constructive way, anger can be a powerful tool for change, fuel for action. The danger is letting this fuel consume you. I'm a great fan! 😂 It has helped me a lot in life. 9mo

I wanted to love this. And I do think it makes some important points. I really liked most of what she had to say. I'm not sure what exactly I didn't like about it. It was...too over the top maybe? It wasn't pointed enough, and was a little all over the place. Still a decent read, especially for someone who's never thought about these things. Most of what was discussed was stuff I have already thought a lot about. Listened to #audiobook on #Scribd

This is a brillant book and everyone - men especially - should read it. A great exploration of women's anger, gender roles and socialisation, how women's experiences and thoughts are minimised and not taken seriously, and how damaging this is to women's wellbeing and society in general.

Excellent job of laying out the case for women‘s anger today. Throughly researched & balanced with personal & others stories, she tells the reader & maybe simply confirms what we as women already know & experience. She speaks to anger in the areas of gender bias & reproductive justice to name a few. We‘re encouraged not judge other women‘s choices & to remember that leveraging our anger means taking a risk, a risk that can lead to positive change.

Such a poignant, well-written (& narrated), and compelling book. I think everyone should read this. It‘s enraging, but in the best way. It articulated so many things within and around me that I‘ve noticed but never before had the vocabulary to identify and talk about. While not necessarily Chemaly‘s intention, listening to this book was like its own therapy session for me.

Required Reading! I listed to this on Scribd, I will be buying a physical copy for myself, my daughter, and my boss! I was raised with the belief that anger was an unacceptable emotion and to be avoided, suppressed and never acknowledged. If I was angry it was because something was wrong with me. In my 30's I read the book the Dance of Anger which started to alter those beliefs. This book is the next step in our evolution for human rights. 5 🌟

Well, if you weren‘t angry before reading this, I can‘t imagine you won‘t be after...ugh!! Chemaly reminds us of the way, WAY too many systemic, institutionalized reasons for women to be full of rage and powerfully shows how women‘s anger is discouraged and punished. It‘s all very distressing, but valuable, and I liked her thoughts about embracing and channeling anger productively. And I love that there is a Rage Becomes Her Spotify playlist! ⬇️⬇️

Weaponxgirl I couldn‘t see the whole playlist as I‘m not on Spotify but I hope there is some skunk anansi, garbage And Kathleen hanna on there! I love for angry lady music 13mo
Christine @Weaponxgirl I think yes to all three! I‘ve not listened to the whole thing yet though bc it‘s very long (maybe bc Chemaly invited readers to add songs). 13mo

“The fact is, the more objective a person thinks he is, the more biased his views.”

I‘m giving this a pick due to the subject matter, which I think is important. However, I got burned out on the book myself. Lots of facts and anecdotes, rather dry tone, and a lot of information to absorb, a lot of which I‘ve run across elsewhere. So though it was good information, didn‘t always hold my attention. 😐

Why do we do so rarely learn how to be angry?

Good question. I discussed it with some friends over lunch (we‘re all close in age) and the responses were pretty much the same. You were told to set an example, lead by example, count to ten (or twenty), leave the room, etc etc etc. If not for watching Mr. Rogers on TV, you‘d have thought anger didn‘t exist at all. Maybe younger women are allowed to be angry and express their anger.

I almost hurt my neck nodding along while reading this book. Chemaly nails the socialization and systems that stifle women‘s anger. With exquisite detail, she dismantles examples of everpresent oppression, giving voice to the primal rage women are justified in feeling.

I really loved and needed this book, especially right before the midterms. A sociological look at women‘s anger, it is a serious read, but well-written and often fascinating. She uses examples from her family and other feminists to illustrate her points. There were even some practical tips on dealing with anger. Highly recommend, especially if you want something a bit meatier and scholarly on the topic. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

If nothing else, this book made me realize that the annoyances and inequalities that I‘ve observed are actually data supported and real. I‘ve called things “subtle sexism”, but came to find out it‘s called “benevolent sexism”- the super nice men who see themselves as your protector and slightly degrade you. Great insight on the white women who voted for Trump and the #metoo movement. Preached to the choir, but I loved the songs!

This book is packed full of information. This chapter on anger and women‘s healthy is especially troubling. I‘ve known many women whose pain was dismissed by medical professionals, only to find they weren‘t being “hysterical” but were actually sick. It‘s awful.

hwestfall This was true for myself before I was finally diagnosed with Crohn's disease. I was almost convinced it was in my head and not that bad. Turns out I had an almost complete intestinal blockage. I am adding this book to my list. Thanks for sharing! 1y
mrsmarch The word “hysteria” is linguistically derived from the word for “uterus.” Hence the word hysterectomy for removal of the uterus. 1y

One thing I‘ve noticed after finding antidepressants is that I feel angry more often, and after reading this I realize it‘s probably because I‘m feeling sadness less intensely. So much good and important information in here, though I‘d say for those of us who identify as feminists, not entirely new ground. This is an excellent thing for others to read to hopefully understand a little bit what life is like for anyone who isn‘t a cis man (esp a straight white one). And it was absolutely helpful & terrific to be reminded that we are not only allowed to be angry, we God damn ought to be and it‘s our right to show it. 4/5 ⭐️

I strongly suspect this was part of the reason why I had such trouble getting responses to resumés and job applications the last couple times I was looking. They‘d see my HS graduation year, figure out my age, and assume at some point in the near future, I‘d want time off to have a kid. Never mind that I‘ve known since I was in middle school that I had zero interest in motherhood. So annoying. And a reason to be happy about approaching 40.
