The Alchemist
The Alchemist | P Coelho, International Editions
The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho While sleeping near a sycamore tree in the sacristy of an abandoned church, Santiago, a shepherd boy, has a recurring dream about a child who tells him that he will find a hidden treasure if he travels to the Egyptian pyramids. An old woman tells Santiago that this dream is prophetic and that he must follow its instructions. Santiago is uncertain, however, since he enjoys the life of a shepherd. Next Santiago meets a mysterious old man who seems able to read his mind. This man introduces himself as Melchizedek, or the King of Salem. He tells Santiago about good and bad omens and says that it is the shepherd boy's duty to pursue his Personal Legend. Melchizedek then gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, with which to interpret omens. Santiago wavers briefly before selling his flock and purchasing a ticket to Tangier, in northern Africa, to which he travels by boat. Shortly after he arrives there, a thief steals all of Santiago's money, so the shepherd boy decides to look for a way to make enough money to return home. He finds work in the shop of a crystal merchant, where Santiago makes improvements that reap considerable financial rewards. After eleven months of working in the shop, Santiago is unsure of how to proceed. Should he return to Andalusia a rich man and buy more sheep? Or should he cross the vast Sahara in pursuit of the hidden treasure of his dreams? He joins a caravan traveling to Egypt. Santiago meets an Englishman who wants to learn the secret of alchemy, or turning any metal into gold, from a famous alchemist who lives at an oasis on the way to the pyramids. While traveling, Santiago begins listening to the desert and discovering the Soul of the World. The caravan eventually reaches the oasis, and there Santiago meets an Arab girl named Fatima and falls in love with her instantly. The caravan leader gathers the travelers together and tells them that tribal warfare prevents them from continuing their journey. Santiago wanders from the oasis into the desert and, seeing two hawks fighting in the sky, has a vision of an army entering the oasis. Because attacking an oasis is a violation of the rules of the desert, Santiago shares his vision with the oasis's tribal chieftain. Soon afterward, Santiago is confronted by a black-garbed, veiled stranger with a sword, who sits atop a white horse. It is the alchemist. The tribal chieftain arms his men, and they are well-prepared when the oasis is indeed invaded. The alchemist offers to cross the desert with Santiago. Soon the two men enter into an area of intense tribal warfare. Warriors hold the two men captive, but eventually allow them to continue their journey. The alchemist tells Santiago that he needs to return to the oasis, and that the rest of the trip is Santiago's to make alone so that he can claim his Personal Legend. Santiago arrives at the Egyptian pyramids and begins to dig. He finds nothing buried in the ground. Thieves beat Santiago and rob him of his money. After he tells them of his dream, though, one of the thieves recounts his own dream about a buried treasure in the sacristy of an abandoned church. Returning to Andalusia, Santiago goes back to the church where he dreamed of the treasure near the pyramids. He digs where he slept, beneath a sycamore tree, and there it is: Santiago's treasure.

I wished I loved it as much as everyone else did. But there are so many better books out there. So much better literature available. I wonder if it is because people don‘t go back far enough, read older books, better books written about destiny. But that‘s me. Please don‘t let that keep you from reading it as many others have loved it. I just was not impressed at all. I was actually bored.

5⭐️

Probably my 5th or 6th time rereading this but just as important to me as the first time. This is a book that focuses on an individual‘s journey in life and achieving what their one true goal (better known as personal legend in this book). It discussed the importance of good and bad omens, striving to achieve what you want and never backing down from your journey no matter how long it might take.

I‘ve read this before & found it mediocre, and this re-read for book club didn‘t change my opinion—I actually downgraded my GR rating from 3 to 2 stars. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot as I read—it‘s filled with way too many obvious, clichéd platitudes and egregious capitalizations of phrases to make them seem More Meaningful. I get frustrated with generic inspirational parables that for me have no bearing on real life. And this book is that.

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Thanks for confirming my decision to not read it 😜 2mo
BarbaraJean @MommyWantsToReadHerBook 😂 What‘s funny is that it‘s tagged as “Art of Soul” in my Goodreads. Apparently I read it in 2009 for Art of Soul, but I have NO recollection of us reading or discussing it! And I‘d guess you don‘t either...? 2mo
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @BarbaraJean seriously? That's so weird. As far as I know, I can remember every book we did and The Alchemist wasn't one of them... 2mo
BarbaraJean @MommyWantsToReadHerBook Yep, really weird. I wonder if I read it thinking it might be a good pick and then changed my mind?! No idea. 2mo

A tale of two book clubs... I need to (re-)read the tagged book for my library book club on the 16th, but I‘d really rather be reading The Calculating Stars for my other book club (meeting on the 29th). I know The Alchemist has been really meaningful to a lot of people, but I found it pretty “meh” when I read it before. At least it‘s a short/quick one for a re-read! Once I get halfway through, I‘ve told myself I can start Calculating Stars.😁

Karisa Agreed on The Alchemist (felt like emperor's clothes to me--meh) I know we are in the minority on that opinion. 🤣 2mo
Molly_the_mezzo I agree on The Alchemist! 2mo
Tianarose I picked up the alchemist in a recent book haul. Did you enjoy it? 2mo

BarbaraJean @Karisa “Emperor‘s clothes”—😂 @Molly_the_mezzo @Libby1 Glad I‘m not alone in this! 2mo
BarbaraJean @Tianarose I found it pretty mediocre before, and on this re-read it‘s kind of annoying me. Lots of too-obvious “inspirational” platitudes. But your mileage may vary! Lots of people LOVE this book. 2mo
Ruthiella Oh I hated The Alchemist. ☹️ That kind of allegory does not work for me at all! 2mo
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Karisa @Molly_the_mezzo @Libby1 Emperor‘s clothes indeed! I was annoyed at how cliched and trite the whole thing was 🙄 Happy to hear you all think so too! 2mo

I got this book from our Library over the weekend. It is such a difficult read due to all the inner reflection and lessons that you can take out of it, so I decided to rather go and buy a copy for myself. This is not a novel to help fill your bookshelf but rather a compass each of us should own, then every now and again take out of our pockets just to make sure that we are still heading in the right direction and have not lost our way. #alchemist

The cover promises “a fable about following your dreams”, and I suppose it delivered, technically. Like any fable, it wasn‘t a tough read, and I burned through it in just a few hours. The Alchemist reads like a fairytale with very simple and straightforward language; I wondered if it read the same way in the original Portuguese, but I guess I‘ll never know. The Alchemist is remarkable for being a love story that renounces the idea that romantic love must be central to people‘s lives. Each person has a destiny that exists independently of others. It is the thing that you would do or be even if you had all the love and money you want.

Some books are to be read, loved and passed on, the alchemist is one of them.
Such a book, with such wonderful description and showcase of the common man's everyday mental and spiritual thoughts, is one of a kind.
This always thrills you to the end, and when it ends, you are at such a state of mental happiness that, you feel you have discovered the elixir of life.
MUST READ AND PASS ON

“When you possess great treasures within you and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.“

Have I read this book three years earlier it would have made a bigger inpact on me. But today it doesn't quite hit the right heart strings.
Today I know I am one of those people whom have found that great treasure - even if people seldom believe me when I tell them.

In this book, there is a quote from the alchemist that says it's not one enters men's mouth that's evil. It's what comes out of their mouths that is. That quote really struck me as something extremely important to remember. We can eat and drink and smoke, but how we treat others is how we will be remembered.
