Daycare was canceled so I‘m working from here 🤓Finished the tagged book this morning between meetings 📚Such a blood soaked series of murders. Real TWs for this one but also I loved it. None of the violence felt gratuitous. Also I‘ve always been a fan of deQuincey & really enjoyed reading him as a reluctant detective character ❤️

This is historical, gruesome, and gripping. Set in Victorian London, the main characters are father (famous writer) and daughter (slightly radical). They‘re drawn into a series of copycat murders that connect to his past writing and life. Scotland Yard detectives need their help. And Morrell keeps the plot moving briskly. Recommend!

This one is my #history choice for #mandmchallenge2020 — I figured a Victorian thriller might be just the distraction I need. So far, it‘s appropriately gruesome and intriguing. #memoirsandmysteries

Murder as a Fine Tart by David Breadroll

Great story! Well written. Concerning Thomas deQuincy and his daughter Emily. The live in Victorian England and help solve a series of horrific murders. As a side note, he is an opium eater. 4⭐

Next book up, with my reading buddy by my side! I may get 2 or 3 books done before the new year! Not quite to my goal, but close! #catsoflitsy
So far, this book is very strange, in a good way.

My library released their top 10 most borrowed ebooks of 2018. I haven't heard of a single one of them because apparently I live under a rock? Like, I must've seen SOME mention of them here on Litsy, but none of 'em stuck in my head.

This book is replete with #underdoghero(es). Thomas de Quincey is first and foremost as he races to discover who is recreating the brutal, decades old Ratcliff Highway murders in Victorian London.

De Quincey is best known for his memoir Confessions of an English Opium Eater, which I have actually read but of which I have little recollection. This was an immersive, fast paced historical thriller.

And with that, I‘ve completed #booked2018.

Lazy Sunday morning means us girls snuggling in bed. They‘re content with their iPads for the moment so I‘m getting some reading in while brian gets me Starbucks. Doesn‘t get much better than this. ❤️

I finally found a book for #underdoghero @Cinfhen . It‘s fantastic so far. My reading buddy prefers lounging on the coffee table as I read. 🤪

PS I swear we don‘t beat her or anything. She just always has a super guilty look on her face. 😂

I‘ll watch the big game later but until then, I‘m reading this. So far it‘s pretty gruesome...

And I can‘t help but wonder that this is the same author that wrote First Blood and so is, in large part, responsible for Sylvester Stallone‘s Rambo...🤔🤔

It's been a long time since I finished a book, but this one changed everything! I haven't read a book so atmospheric in many years. If you love Victorian mysteries, you have to pick this one up. As soon as I finished reading Murder and a Fine Art, I ordered the sequel. I can't wait to be transported back to those foggy London streets!

I have a small weakness for fiction wrapped around historical events/people. The mystery probably could have been stronger. I try not to figure out a mystery because I like to see the twists and turns - this might have been a bit predictable. However, the background is excellent and what sells the story for me. Opium, mention of bias against the Irish, chimney sweeps, and so on add context and depth to the story.

Detective Inspector Ryan appears to not like crossing over water and/or bridges. I do not like crossing over water and/or bridges. We are clearly meant for one another. Also, I think Detective Inspector is classy and sexy, and far better than just plain Detective. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to buy a copy of this book.

Two chapters in and there's already mention of Vidocq and the work on cholera by John Snow. I enjoy when actual history shows up in my fiction. Fingers crossed for this one.

This book had its moments, but overall it was a bit clunky and drawn out. I love a good historical mystery, and this had a lot of promise....but I was a bit disappointed. Will still check out the next book in the series.

This was well crafted and super creepy. I loved the time period and the characters!
