Our House
Our House | Louise Candlish
On a bright morning in the London suburbs, a family moves into the house theyve just bought on Trinity Avenue. Nothing strange about that. Except it's your house. And you didnt sell it. 'If 2018 brings a better book than Our House I will eat my hat. Addictive, twisty and oh so terrifyingly possible Clare Mackintosh, author of I See You I raced through it this weekend. Such a smart idea. Twisty, warped, credible. Brilliantly plotted and compelling. Deserves to be such a hit Sarah Vaughan, author of Anatomy of a Scandal I loved the wonderful hook of Our House, which plays with our modern obsession with property - and the vulnerability that exposes. Louise Candlish is a great writer; she inhaled me into her nightmarish world where everything we think we know is ripped from under our feet Fiona Barton, author of The Widow and The Child FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE. When Fi Lawson arrives home to find strangers moving into her house, she is plunged into terror and confusion. She and her husband Bram have owned their home on Trinity Avenue for years and have no intention of selling. How can this other family possibly think the house is theirs? And why has Bram disappeared when she needs him most? FOR RICHER, FOR POORER. Bram has made a catastrophic mistake and now he is paying. Unable to see his wife, his children or his home, he has nothing left but to settle scores. As the nightmare takes grip, both Bram and Fi try to make sense of the events that led to a devastating crime. What has he hidden from her and what has she hidden from him? And will either survive the chilling truth that there are far worse things you can lose than your house? TILL DEATH US DO PART. 'Our House is one of the best books I have ever read ... FACT Isabelle Broom, author of My Map of You Gripping and heartbreaking with an undercurrent of unease running through it Louise Jensen, author of The Gift Heart-stopping, toe-curling, breath-taking! Half cant bear to read/half cant bear to put it down. Its marvellous - so tautly plotted and dont see the twists coming! Will be a smash hit! Veronica Henry, author of The Forever House Finished in two days. Absolutely brilliant. It has bestseller written all over it Kate Furnivall, author of The Betrayal What a book! Fast, edge-of-your-seat stuff. Each time I set the book down I had to remind myself to breathe broadbeanbooks 'What a sensational book this is, with a plot that unrolls like clockwork, and simmering tension that never lets up. Betrayal, double-crossing and the most delicious sting in the tail... I couldn't put it down' Lucy Diamond, bestselling author of The House of New Beginnings A great read lots of surprises and an excellent ending Cesca Major, author of The Silent Hours Jaw-droppingly brilliant Catherine Isaac, author of You Me Everything Oh Louise Candlish, you are a genius! Our House is just brilliant. Scarily believable with the BEST ending I have read in a long time. I devoured it! Claire Frost, Fabulous magazine A high-stakes domestic thriller that is utterly absorbing. Twists and turns abound, and Our House will have you locking your doors and checking your windows. Candlish delivers a frightening portrait of one womans worst nightmare. Trust no one! Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author

Interesting and enjoyable enough that I kept reading but I wasn't immensely intrigued. Parts of it puttered out, and I couldn't tell what the point was or where the story was going. The nonlinear timeline and abrupt changes in point of view were disorienting. I liked the writing style, the characters, and the semi-predictable twist, but the story lacked passion overall.

This was definitely suspenseful and there was a good twist but I didn‘t love how it ended and I found all the characters to be fairly unpleasant. That said it was a total page turner and went fast.

This book got better as it went on, so stick with it. Nice ending that makes you continue the story well after you finish the book.
A woman arrives home one day to find another family moving into her house.... It gets a lot more twisty than that.

I came to Our House, hoping again for a compelling, plot-driven read. The premise is one with potential, it‘s initially confusing, and it hasn‘t been done a million times. However, I found that Candlish made this narrative both too ridiculous at times (the mechanism for the crime is outrageous), and too complicated (the connecting threads and plot twists in the last 50 pages were unnecessary in many moments, and too convenient in others).

TrishB I thought the same! 10mo

Biggest Plot Twist

I have read a few bookswith BIG plot twists, but the ending on OUR HOUSE by Louise Candlish had me literally gasp at the last line and what the character did.

OUR HOUSE is one of the most creative suspense books I have read.

OUR HOUSE is bizarre, nerve wracking, and unbelievable, but oh so good. That last line is WOW!!

I finished this book weeks ago but apparently never posted about it here despite the fact that I‘ve been telling everyone I see to read it. Same goes here - if you haven‘t added this book to your TBR yet, do it now.

The basic premise - A woman comes home one day to find her husband, kids, and belongings gone and strangers moving into her house. What follows is a great thriller/mystery that will keep you committed to figure out what happened.

About a third of the way in on this I was kind of 'meh'. It felt like it couldn't decide what kind of book it was. But holy wow. It became clear what kind of book it was and had more twists and surprises than anything I've read in a while, and ones that I absolutely never saw coming. And that ending...😱😱😱. Definitely recommend.

StephanieGeiser I loved this one too and can‘t stop recommending it to people! 11mo

Quite compelling - finished the book in one day! Learnt about birds nest arrangements (didn't know there is such a thing) and other ways of blackmailing and defrauding people (which made me a bit paranoid - what if it happened to me?!) However, felt the plot dipped a bit during the last few chapters because of some moments I felt were illogical - maybe it's part of an attempt to give the ending a twist #bookclubpick #thankyoulibrary

On the whole not a bad read. I enjoyed the format which alternated between Fi‘s story told in an online podcast style (complete with comments from internet trolls!) and Bram‘s journal style word document. And the premise was interesting but just not that well executed. The middle just dragged, made me totally disinterested in the characters and storyline. Originally started reading in July and only finished it a few days ago. Enough said. 3⭐️

Also, Bram!! What a wally. I know he got caught up in his own mistakes, but wouldn‘t you try to talk to someone?

Finally finished this one. Took me almost 150 pages to get into it, which, as a flight attendant reading the same book told me, is an awfully long time to wait. I kept reading though because I was in need of a nice shut-off-your-brain-and-escape book. And on that front, Our House definitely delivered.

So excited that I finally picked this up. But two chapters in and I'm annoyed. Quick book blurb: Fi comes home to people moving into her home, her husband and kids gone. They hadn't divorced yet. So why am I so close to tossing the book? Because it's all about the house. NOT ONE: "where the hell are my kids?!" Okay... I'll give it a chance, there may be a good reason, but it better show up in Chapter 3.

RadicalReader @DianeDeMasi definitely would cause some serious questions. I know I‘d have them too. A wonderful book I read by a phenomenal author with a gripping plot and chapters that catapult you is 10mo

This story gave me chills, it unfolded gradually and painfully, and I found myself holding my breath, feeling outraged on Fiona‘s behalf. How could this happen?
The multiple perspectives annoyed me at first, the constant switching between the 3 viewpoints jumbled my poor head alarmingly until I settled in to the rhythm.
And that ending! I thought I had it all sussed out until then.
