Perfect for fans of NBC's "This Is Us," Robin Benways beautiful interweaving story of three very different teenagers connected by blood explores the meaning of family in all its formshow to find it, how to keep it, and how to love it. Being the middle child has its ups and downs. But for Grace, an only child who was adopted at birth, discovering that she is a middle child is a different ride altogether. After putting her own baby up for adoption, she goes looking for her biological family, including Maya, her loudmouthed younger bio sister, who has a lot to say about their newfound family ties. Having grown up the snarky brunette in a house full of chipper redheads, shes quick to search for traces of herself among these not-quite-strangers. And when her adopted familys long-buried problems begin to explode to the surface, Maya cant help but wonder where exactly it is that she belongs. And Joaquin, their stoic older bio brother, who has no interest in bonding over their shared biological mother. After seventeen years in the foster care system, hes learned that there are no heroes, and secrets and fears are best kept close to the vest, where they cant hurt anyone but him. Don't miss this moving novel that addresses such important topics as adoption, teen pregnancy, and foster care.

I suggest this book to people who like to read about realistic fiction. every chapter is fun to read and the book-length is just right for me. *SPOILER* there are three main characters and they are all going through a different situation.
they're actually biological siblings but they find each other afterward.

Three teenagers discover that they are siblings in this fantastic, award winning YA novel. Joaquin, Grace, and Maya negotiate their own lives and pasts and then the additional impact of finding out they have each other, too. #allthefeels

This is an instant YA classic! There were a few parts that were so profound and well-written that I had to pause and re-read them. The last page even brought me to tears! Some of the character‘s reactions to big events felt a little unnatural (perhaps overdramatized) to me, but such is YA. The good definitely outweighs the bad with this one!

While the probability of putting 3 kids up for adoption/release in such rapid succession baffles me, most of the huh-moments I had while reading are answered in the last chapter. I enjoyed the multi POV from the teens and the diversity and similarities that they shared. All around this was a fantastic book that can really shed light on what it feels like to be adopted, in foster care, and what it's like to be a teen parent.

A story about three biological half-siblings, each given up after birth, who find each other as teens. I enjoyed this and felt it offered a fresh perspective on subjects such as teen pregnancy, adoption, and family. Would make a great discussion book for teens or adults.

I have been on a roll with good books. This will make you smile and wrenchingly sob. Siblings find themselves at 15, 16, and 17 years of age after their mother gives them for adoption as babies. Each needs the other two for support and understanding when they have to deal with unspeakable hardships. Their love is pure though they have only known each other for a few weeks. Just a beautiful, fantastic story..

A story of adoption and foster care. Three siblings that grew up separately are reunited as teenagers, becoming a familial support system. They've all faced significant challenges that feel a bit contrived. It's an enjoyable, quick read, and, truthfully, I teared up more than once, but I fear the book is forgettable and lacks longevity.

Sometimes I am baffled as to why certain books win awards and sometimes the reasons are so clear. This book falls into the latter category. Benway manages to pack in so many things relevant to teens (and really, anyone) while keeping it real. Fantastic.

This book gave me all the feels. I was really hesitant to read it, for a few reasons. Too many parallels to my own life story, and worry that the author wouldn‘t do justice to what it is like to be an adoptee in reunion with bio family. I am so glad I read it, as this is a wonderfully written fictional window of what search and reunion can be like for the adoption triad: birth parents, adoptees, and aparents. I still cried often while reading. 😭

Finally got home from my last meeting, finally some evening time!

Going by the blurb, this book bears many similarities to my own life and shared experience with two of my biological half-sisters. I bought it almost two years ago, but wasn‘t ready to read it then. I think I am now.

The 10 year anniversary of my birth mother‘s death is coming up in a few days, and this book has been silently calling to me all month.

Lovesbooks87 This was such an amazing book! 7mo
4thhouseontheleft @Lovesbooks87 I really like it so far. It also makes me want to sit down and write the story of how I found my birth family and half-siblings. 😊 7mo
Lovesbooks87 @4thhouseontheleft I am sure. It hit home for me as well my mom and sister were both adopted. My sister grew up knowing her birth family. But my mom went back and found her birth family when she was in her 40s. 7mo
4thhouseontheleft @Lovesbooks87 It‘s definitely a story topic that touches many! Did your mom use DNA testing to help in her search? That ‘s what I did, and matched to one of my half-sister‘s 3 years ago. Unfortunately, my birth mother passed away on May 31, 2009 of an opiate overdose, long before my reunification, but I have a good relationship with her parents, and my birth father. My bmom gave birth to 3 kids, all adopted, I‘m the oldest. (edited) 7mo
Lovesbooks87 @4thhouseontheleft my mom had some details about her adoption so she hired a private investigator and found her that way. That's amazing that you were able to find some of your birth family and have a relationship with them. My mom is also the oldest of 7. But she was the only one that was adopted. 7mo

First book finished of 2019! I listened on audio and it kept me focused as I organized my closet -- I worked longer bc I wanted to keep the story going. I loved the story and felt equally interested in each of the three main characters. Usually with a multi-POV story I care more about one of the storylines, but these were balanced well. I can see why this won the National Book Award. #PopSugar2019

Last year's National Book Award winner for young people's fiction, Far From the Tree is the story of three siblings that didn't know one another until they are teenagers since two were adopted as babies and one grew up in the foster care system. Alternating points of view with complex characters; I really loved it.
