Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince | J.K. Rowling
Reading level: Ages 9-12,At the least, book six in the Harry Potter series does what it needs to: it moves the characters along in their personal and magical development; it fills in some previous gaps of knowledge; especially with regard to Voldemort's past; it continues to raise the level of urgency and danger as previous books have, it adds a few more mysteries/cliffhangers; and it ends with a clear pointing toward a final climactic battle. Harry is now sixteen and has been devastated with the lost of his godfather from the previous year. Regardless, he trugs on. Afterall, he still has his friends (Ron and Hermonie), Hagrid, and Dumbledoor. Book six begins with Dumbledoor collecting Harry over the summer (quite strange--to say the least). Dumbledoor tells Harry of his inheritance from his godfather and that he would like to give Harry private lessons in addition to his normal classes at Hogwarts. Harry, of course, agrees. This year is especially dangerous for all witches and wizards everywhere, because now it is known by all that Voldermort has return with his Death Eaters. While Death Eaters create a rampange throughout the countryside, Harry overhears Malfoy's secret converstations with a curator well known for dabbling in the dark arts. Harry is certain that Malfoy is now a Death Eater like his father. Only no one will take him seriously. The story continues in this vein. Harry helping and discovering Dumbledoor's secrets, following and spying on Malfoy, and then there is the teenage romance that seems to involve Harry, as well as, all his friends.

This is my fav! I thought a lot about what a strong character Ginny is. She's skilled at Quidditch and the DA. She stands up for people like Luna & Neville, & doesn't drop what she's doing for Harry. I wish we had more of her in 7. I also thought about how Dumbledore's secrecy hurt everyone. I thought of him as such a flawless character when I was young, but truly, he could have helped the war so much if he'd share more info w/the Order and Harry.

I‘m starting to think that the slot of mystery book club coordinator at the library is their equivalent of the DADA professor at Hogwarts. Not that bad things happen to them, but nobody seems to stay in the position very long. I started attending regularly in September 2016, there have been five coordinators.

The latest one left to become…a flight attendant. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not that there‘s anything wrong with that, but it seems like a 180 career turn!

AlaMich Wow! And these days, being a flight attendant means taking your life in your hands, with all those deranged passengers. 2mo
Reggie Lololol we have a position like that at work where nobody lasts more than a year. I‘m glad someone else uses this reference. 2mo
Magpiegem 😂 I left a job as a Senior Lecturer at a University to become cabin crew (air hostess). Trust me, when you fly the people looking after you come from allllllllll walks of life, it‘s fascinating. 2mo

I've been in a continuous reading slump, so I decided to continue on with my Harry Potter reread. I'm loving experiencing these as audiobooks for the first time as it helps me appreciate these books in a new way. I think book 6 may be my favorite. The perfect blend of humor and seriousness. Love seeing the characters discover love and dating in a more meaningful way, too.

Book #6. Harry is asked to have private classes with Dumbledore, which add light to fill in the gaps of history on how Voldemort became who he is. This book has misery, tragedy, and friendship of course.

Since the movie The Half-Blood Prince has never been one of my favorites, it surprised me how much I enjoyed reading the book. I especially loved how we learned about Voldemort‘s life and background.

Even though I‘m ready to start reading the final book, it‘s also a weird feeling to know that the story is about to come to an end.

I love how much we learn about Voldemort‘s past, and it‘s satisfying how Dumbledore is finally no longer ignoring Harry. As a big fan of the Harry & Ginny pairing, the second half of the book is very sweet. The ending remains, after all these years, powerful and sad.

The 6th instalment of the Harry Potter series was a lot darker than the previous books, and I really liked that. The plot seemed like one long build up for the final book, but I'm glad that we have the foundations for the final battle. Friendships were put to the test and relationships were founded which I like to see, as the characters are growing up. Sad and happy at times and I enjoyed it overall. Looking foward to finishing the series!

I always have mixed feelings about this book in the series. Coming off of the fifth one, it seems good but when you think about it. Dumbledore constantly puts a underage child at risk and expects him to basically give up his childhood for the sake of the saving the world.

Also, I read so much slower now, if it wasn‘t for audiobooks and a job that requires some noise outside of cubicle life, I would probably be at one book read a month.

I know this is the least favourite of many, probably because the whole object of the book is to prepare us for the next one,but I do enjoy the look into Voldemort's past and I'm so happy that I can like Harry again after how annoying I find him in The Order of the Phoenix. Also the fact that, like Harry,I can start to pity Malfoy rather than just hate him, at least it gives more dimension to the character than "he is just an evil prick"

#PotterADay

Sargar114 I agree, while it‘s a set up book it makes a lot of the characters much more dimensional not just Malfoy. 5mo

nanuska_153 @Sargar114 it does, we do get it from many characters, I just find any background explaining why people do evil things more than leaving it as a black and white situation very interesting 😅 5mo

Half-Blood Prince #potteraday discussion! ☠️🧪

1. Hermione says that Harry can use the Felix Felicis to get the memory — as opposed to breaking into the Room of Requirement — b/c he had that ability all along. Do you agree? I can't help thinking it a bit far-fetched.

2. There are some fans that dislike Ginny b/c they feel like she turned siren overnight, but I love that only once Harry‘s paying attention we see her fierceness. What do you think?

CBee @Linsy I agree - I think the room of requirement appears from a more natural desire, and if he took Felix to get in, it would be more contrived? If that makes sense. Like his deepest desire is to get in, but he has an advantage. 5mo
CBee And I love Ginny - I don‘t see her as a siren, just a badass ♥️ 5mo
See All 7 Comments
Sargar114 1. It seems the magic of the room of requirement relies on a specific need. Just generally catching Malfoy wasn‘t enough. When the roles were reversed Umbridge and Malfoy knew what the DA was up to which is why they were able to get in. I tend to agree with Hermione on this, and the Felix would be wasted if used in this matter. Plus in the end, the info from Slughorn was more important anyway. 5mo
Sargar114 2. I‘m also a fan of Ginny, I think we just see her natural maturation. We don‘t see all of her story since we‘re following Harry‘s. I think part of her appeal to Harry is ferocity. 5mo
nanuska_153 1.I agree with @Sargar114 and @CBee it makes sense;also the Room of Requirement has powerful ancient magic,it's difficult to see how the potion could have worked. 2. I love Ginny, she is a strong female character, good in sports, that can tell even Hermione when she is out of line, and that is not afraid to date whomever she wants and doesn't believe in slut shame.I think the hate is more towards the Ginny of the movies rather than book Ginny. 5mo

I am so behind this book! Read quite a few chapters today so I could catch up. I forgot that Buckbeak came to Harry's defense! That was so tender. And I've always loved the scene with Fleur by Bill's beside, but it really hit me this time. Is their love story a fan fic somewhere? I really want to read it now. I love her confidence in their relationship! #potteraday

nanuska_153 I always thought Mrs Weasley and Ginny's behaviour with Fleur terrible. Imagine you bring your partner, who is from France and doesn't know anybody,to stay with your family so they meet before you get married and that's how they treat her, making obvious all the time that she is not welcomed and that they don't think she is good enough 5mo
