Cotillion | Georgette Heyer
21 posts | 22 read | 17 to read
"My favourite historical novelist."-Margaret Drabble "Sparkling."-Independent on Sunday A sham betrothal isn't the only thing that gets Kitty and Freddy into trouble, but it's definitely the beginning .. A most unusual hero Freddy is immensely rich, of course, and not bad-looking, but he's mild-mannered, a bit hapless-not anything like his virile, handsome, rakish cousin Jack ... A heroine in a difficult situation Young Kitty Charing stands to inherit a vast fortune from her irascible and eccentric guardian-provided she marries one of his great-nephews ... A sham betrothal No sooner does Kitty arrive in London then the race for her hand begins, but between confirmed rakes and bumbling affections, Kitty needs a daring scheme ... "Thus begins Cotillion, arguably the funniest, most charming of Georgette Heyer's many delightful Regency romances." -Amazon.co.uk "Triumphantly good ... Georgette Heyer is unbeatable." -Sunday Telegraph

I celebrated my break between classes with reading and finished the lovely Cotillion. @mabell thank you again for this treat. It reminded me a little of Jane Austen‘s Emma mashed with Mr. Magoo. Regency romance and humor abound🧡🧡🧡🧡

mabell Emma and Mr. Magoo - I love it! 😂😂 I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! 2mo

One of my best book finds recently was this stack of vintage Georgette Heyer books at a book fair. Loving making my way through them now!

While I have to admit that, on the romance side, I prefer Heyer's charming rakes and haughty Corinthians to lovely but slightly dim Freddy (shocking admission! Must be queer in my attic!) this was probably the funniest I've read so far. A hilarious, farcical romp full of adventurers and entanglements. Oh, Georgette, I love you so!

LeahBergen This was such a fun one. 👏🏻👏🏻 13mo

Day 8 of #31bookpics! I love #GeorgetteHeyer so much that basically 60 of her books are my #oldfavorite. I chose just a few to highlight today though! ❤️📚

It‘s not too late to join in on #31bookpics if you want to! What‘s your old favorite?

jillrhudy I have that exact copy of Cotillion but can‘t get past the man talk in the beginning. @MorayReads knows whereof I speak. 14mo
howjessreads @jillrhudy @Moray_Reads yeah the beginning is rough. Great Uncle Matthew is the worst. 🙄 But I adore Freddy. ❤️❤️ (edited) 14mo
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy @howjessreads thank goodness we don't have to suffer the vagaries of the ton in the 21st century (as of anything has really changed! 😒) 14mo
Vansa One of my favourite Heyers too! I have all of them as well, they're so much fun ! 14mo

I finished this Regency Romance in hour five of the #24in48 readathon. How had I never heard of this genre? This book was a fun romp through London during the Regency period with Kitty playing matchmaker, all the while falling in love herself.

LeahBergen Yay! I‘m so glad you liked your first Georgette Heyer. 😍 1y

#24in48

I had no idea Regency Romance was a genre, but I‘m really enjoying Cotillion.

This is my realistic TBR stack for this weekend.

Aimeesue I'm not really a romance reader, but if you like the Regencies, Georgette Heyer is the Queen Mother of Regency and Georgian romances. She pretty much originated them, and wrote for 50 years or so. 😄 1y
Ashley_Nicoletto I really enjoy a good regency every now and then. There's so many types of romance and I love it. 1y

Reviewsbylola Good stack! 1y
mabell I LOVE Cotillion!! ❤️❤️❤️ 1y
Mdargusch I finished Cotillion @Aimeesue @Ashley_Nicoletto @jillrhudy @mabell and I loved it! I‘m a new Regency Romance fan. The very beginning was a little tedious but once the story was in London, I was swept away. ❤️ 1y
Mdargusch Starting that one now @introvertedbooks 1y
CoffeeK8 I love this book so much! You have such a fun road ahead of you with GH, she has a lot of great ones! 1y

There is not one, but two, couples who run away to be married in Cotillion. The second, a thrilling and unlikely, #elopement, is part of the action-packed conclusion. The betrothed pair elope - with assistance - to a Reverend cousin, as a "journey all the way to Gretna Green would not have done."

First read years ago, this was my first Regency romance, and I enjoyed it SO much.

LeahBergen I have this one but it‘s still TBR. 👍🏻 2y
mabell @LeahBergen Of the Heyer romances I have read so far (4-5?), this one is by far my favorite. ❤️ 2y

LeahBergen @mabell @rubyslippersreads Wait! I HAVE read this one. I should really make myself a list. 😂😂 2y
mabell @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads That is hilarious 😂 In your defense, I find Heyer titles often don't obviously connect to the plot 🤔 2y
CrowCAH Lots of loose women getting married! Lol 2y
LeahBergen @mabell They don‘t! I‘m pretty good with the ones titled with the main characters names - I can remember if I‘ve read those. 😂 That got a bit tricky when I was buying all I could find at book sales though (Arabella, Venetia, Frederica and so on 😂). 2y
mabell @LeahBergen I was just looking at a list - she wrote so many Regency romances! I definitely would lose track. Her 12 mysteries are much easier to remember 😆 But even then I still have to stop and think which title matches with which plot! 2y
LeahBergen @mabell And the titles of a couple of her mysteries have been changed, too, I think. I recently saw Envious Casca republished as A Christmas Party. 🤔 2y

My comfort reads are a specific style of historical romance with a hero who‘s kind or trying to be a better person. Mischief of the mistletoe, The Duchess War, The Bargain or Not Quite a Husband. #comfortreads

EllanaRose Historical romance is a great comfort zone read for me too. It's like travelling back in time but knowing there is a happy ending 2y

Ahh, such a refreshing reread! Standard Heyer charm with a less usual, beta-male hero. I just needed something bright and charming and that hit the spot.

Jumping in late to #SeasonsReadings2016 because I have #MultipleCopies of most Georgette Heyer titles. She's my favorite author, and about 15 years ago I filled up a suitcase with Pan paperbacks in England when she was still OOP in the US. But I can never resist the pretty new reprints or occasional collectible hardbacks when I see them!! Last year I realized I owned more than 130 of her 65 titles, so I winnowed to no more than 2 copies of each.

RealLifeReading What a collection! I've only read two of her books but really enjoyed them. Which are your favourites 3y

I love love Georgette Heyer, and this one is a fave! It's so funny, and things go a little differently than in some of her other plots. I'm probably due for a re-read! Also, this cover fits the story not at all... #onewordtitles #photoadaynov16

rubyslippersreads ❤️❤️❤️ this book! I need to read more Heyer. 3y
raelaschoenherr @rubyslippersreads Yes! Isn't this one delightful? I haven't read a Heyer in a while, it might be time :) Do you have a favorite? Frederica and The Grand Sophy are also pretty hilarious :) 3y
