This voyage is special. It will change everything... One September evening in 1785, the merchant Jonah Hancock hears urgent knocking on his front door. One of his captains is waiting eagerly on the step. He has sold Jonahs ship for what appears to be a mermaid. As gossip spreads through the docks, coffee shops, parlours and brothels, everyone wants to see Mr Hancocks marvel. Its arrival spins him out of his ordinary existence and through the doors of high society. At an opulent party, he makes the acquaintance of Angelica Neal, the most desirable woman he has ever laid eyes on... and a courtesan of great accomplishment. This chance meeting will steer both their lives onto a dangerous new course, a journey on which they will learn that priceless things come at the greatest cost... What will be the cost of their ambitions? And will they be able to escape the destructive power mermaids are said to possess? In this spell-binding story of curiosity and obsession, Imogen Hermes Gowar has created an unforgettable jewel of a novel, filled to the brim with intelligence, heart and wit.

For much of this long, leisurely novel I felt I was watching a slow-motion train wreck. I was horrified by what I thought was going to happen. And then suddenly I realized that it wasn't a train wreck at all, but a story that made me feel that all was right with the world. Gowar won me over by art and a bit of magic, and I am so very glad I read this. The language is dazzling and the audiobook, narrated by Juliet Stephenson is superb. I loved it!

I'm a bit perplexed by how to describe Imogen Hermes Gowar's The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock. Told in a sort of Victorian style, it focuses on protagonist Mr. Hancock, the unwilling recipient of a dead, stuffed mermaid creature. Through his ownership of this curiosity, he comes into contact with an array of people his middle-class life had formerly made out of reach. Included in this new crowd is Angelica Neal, (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod a beautiful and glamorous prostitute with whom Mr. Hancock becomes infatuated. What did I like? The characters are complex and sympathetic; I like Victorian novels, so I was mostly in for the style; I appreciated the grotesque strangeness and whimsy of the mermaid sections. I was less sure about the pace--somehow, in a true Victorian novel, everything (even the diversions) feels more purposeful. ⬇️ 4mo
UnabridgedPod I like a leisurely pace when it's earned, and I wasn't *quite* there for this one. There were a few times I considered abandoning the book because I just wanted it to move more. Ultimately, I'm glad I didn't because I REALLY appreciated Part III of III and the way that Gowar concludes the stories of Hancock and Neal. 4mo

Buckle up ladies and gentlemen because I have a lot of thoughts about this one. The “Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock” was my one of my picks for BOTM in September 2018 and even though I just got around to reading it, I didn‘t love it like many other readers have. Keep in mind that this book is graphic and see my review for specific triggers.

I loved the writing itself in this book, and the descriptions of things like clothes and scenery were evocative and lush. I also really liked Angelica for the first third or so of the book. But she changed so suddenly and in ways that felt odd, and Jonah overall was kind of empty. The story takes a turn toward fantasy-ish at the end that I just didn‘t get and felt off key to me. Liked it, didn‘t love, but would read more from the author. 3/5 ⭐️

The Mermaid and Mrs.Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar is a five star 1780s time machine of ornate storytelling.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Whimsy and wonder with every flip of a page. I was fully immersed within a world the author built. Each character is as colorful as the story they live in. Readable Art. An enchanting journey to the very end. 💃🏼✨

I enjoyed the rich descriptions and historical elements of this novel. Set in London in 1780 it takes you inside the bawdy whore houses and middle class homes of London. It is well written and atmospheric. I just can‘t help thinking how awful life would have been for women in those days forced into prostitution to survive, trying to protect themselves from men, disease and pregnancy!

Life is too short for ridiculously long audiobooks if you don't thoroughly enjoy the narration, and I did not enjoy any of this. The narrator has decided to give each character a voice, and they're either grating or unsuitable or just.. questionable. YMMV, obviously, but I'll have to grab a physical copy at some point.

This another of those stories I wanted to like more than I really did. It‘s a good story & I love Gowar‘s use of language and how she builds the atmosphere of the story, but there was something about the story that I never quite felt able to fall into. The final part of the story with the 2nd mermaid just really felt out of sync with the rest as well. In the end, good story but just really didn‘t gel for me.

While this book was not at all what I expected, it was fantastic. Such lush, gorgeous writing (seriously, this is a debut??) and extremely well done historical fiction. There is a whole lot going on here, and it was a slow, pleasant burn for me.

Let me start by saying this audio book on Libro.fm is one of the BEST I have ever listened to. The reader is phenomenal. That being said, wow what a book. It has been nestled in my chest cavity for a couple days now, simultaneously weighing it down and lifting it up, like a breathing, living creature. I do not think it will leave me for quite some time. It‘s now one of my favorite books. I‘m going to go stare out a window for a couple more hours.

This is the story of a lonely man who gets a mermaid carcass instead of his ship back (after it went out to sea). He makes a small fortune off his mermaid, but not before he falls in love (maybe more like lust) with a beautiful, retired prostitute. And she joked that he could only see her if he brings her another mermaid. There‘s a lot of brothel, but ultimately this is the story of ultimately finding happiness. Such an interesting book!

I originally passed it up as a selection from Book of the Month Club but caught my error the next month when I saw the buzz pick up about it. Despite having a gorgeous hardcover to read at home, I got the audio format and I think it‘s a happy accident of fate because the narrator is marvelous. This odd little tale is coming to life and I‘m enjoying it so much. Does anyone else buy one format and actually read it in another? Is that a thing?

Susannah I definitely do this. Particularly when I find I don't have time to sit down and read a book I really want to read, I'll find the audiobook so I can make some progress during my work commute or when I'm taking care of household chores. 12mo
