Anatomy of a Scandal
Anatomy of a Scandal | Sarah Vaughan
You want to believe your husband. She wants to destroy him. Gripping psychological drama for fans of Apple Tree Yard, The Good Wife and Notes on a Scandal. Anatomy of a Scandal centres on a high-profile marriage that begins to unravel when the husband is accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is sure her husband, James, is innocent and desperately hopes to protect her precious family from the lies which might ruin them. Kate is the barrister who will prosecute the case she is equally certain that James is guilty and determined he will pay for his crimes. A high-profile marriage thrust into the spotlight. A wife, determined to keep her family safe, must face a prosecutor who believes justice has been a long time coming. A scandal that will rock Westminster. And the women caught at the heart of it. Praise for Sarah Vaughan A clever, compelling story Woman & Home You won't want this one to end Marie Claire Lovable, flawed, and so very human, each character had me rooting for them right until the very end Claire Fuller Exquisitely written - sharp, sometimes painful, but authentic with real emotional depth Veronica Henry A great read about guilt, atonement and identity Hello! Told with an intensity that echoes du Maurier Kate Saunders An assured and very affecting piece of storytelling Lucy Robinson

This is popular fiction and I had some issues with the writing, but it was still a pretty well crafted, entertaining novel with a satisfying conclusion.

Cathythoughts I thought it a good read 👍🏻♥️ 6mo

So if you'll forgive me for being pedantic, this is a really, really random way to make someone die in a novel. And safari park isn't even a term - if you want to do big game hunting, you go to privately owned game farm, and in the case of a foreigner it's likely canned hunting... But she could have also just said rifle accident. Anyway, moving on...

Clare-Dragonfly I thought this was a reference to the Delia Owens poacher controversy. But this is a totally different book and apparently that was in Zambia. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6mo

The writing isn't absolutely amazing but this is a decent distracting read - except for those times that nothing is able to fully distract me from the drama that is my life right now! I'm looking forward to seeing how everything comes together (in the book. In my life too, I guess).

JennyM Sending you lots of good wishes. Sorry to hear things remain hard. Thinking of you xx 6mo

Bookwomble I love the first half of Frankl's book, but I'm less sold on his description of logotherapy. Definitely a worthwhile read, though 🙂 7mo
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @Cathythoughts I‘m sure I will 👍🏻 7mo
TrishB @Bookwomble I don‘t really know anything about the therapy, so will be totally new to me. It‘s one of those books that pop up a lot on recommended reads though! 7mo
jhod I liked it too, happy reading ! 7mo
Bookwomble @TrishB His concentration camp memoir is remarkable - that's the first half - and is incredibly inspiring. I wouldn't want to put you off reading it as it is fantastic 🙂 After his liberation, he continued his work as a psychoanalyst to great success, but I personally find his method too much about the therapist and not enough about the client. 7mo
TrishB @jhod cool 👍🏻 7mo

I did it - I finished my first book in over a month! While starting grad school is partly to blame for my slow progress, the fact that this book was dreadfully boring for about 90% of it also plays a significant role. I wasn‘t very surprised by the twists and I found the pace of the book too slow for my taste. I assumed that this was a domestic thriller and courtroom drama, but it was neither of those things. 2 stars 🙊🤷‍♀️

Cathythoughts Oh I thought this one wS very good 7mo
Emilymdxn I really disliked this one too 7mo

This one's a real page-turner, a legal thriller about a rising politician, and friend of the Prime Minister, who is accused by his young assistant of rape. Cleverly plotted - we move from the present to the Oxford undergraduate years of the main characters and the POV shifts too from chapter to chapter, and the tension builds most effectively. Gripping, twisty and very enjoyable.

Cathythoughts I really enjoyed this one too 👍🏻 10mo

I‘ve been going through “Bodyguard” withdrawal and this filled the void somewhat. There was a twist revealed about halfway through that initially made me 🙄 but then when I started searching the recesses of *my* brain for 20 year old memories of college I realized it did work. Quite relevant to today‘s #MeToo moment of reckoning. Definitely recommend. 4🌟

I am not a fan of labeling something the worst thing I consumed in a year.

I‘d much rather celebrate some of my favorite things this year.

SO many incredible books consumed that I could remake this post at least four more time. 🖤

Melissa_J I have to admit, I like when people post what they didn‘t like. I find one and two star reviews far more useful than four and five star ones - so long as they are constructive that is. 13mo
Melissa_J I do have a couple of your best books on my TBR, and hope my experience with them is as good as yours was. 13mo
britt_brooke I like seeing both best and worst, but I get where you‘re coming from! 13mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @britt_brooke It just feels icky to say “oh hey, your life‘s work... the worst thing I consumed this year.” 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 But I also get why people think it‘s necessary. 13mo

I only got this one because it was “ buy one & get one half-price” in Waterstones... I‘m heading into the final furlong ... and It‘s a real page turner... I‘m totally caught up in this very well written book. The subject is rape & it‘s a court room situation / with a story woven in. I will read more of Sarah Vaughan... This one was completely different from what I was expecting. It‘s mainly a courtroom drama that deals with a rape charge. Kate‘s story was my favorite in the rotating POV. I will say that I think the cover is completely misleading. There‘s nothing in the book that makes this cover makes sense to me.

Listened the the #audiobook of this one. I found it relevant and interesting but definitely not a thriller. Told from the point of view of several main characters in present day Britain and in 1993 Oxford University. Scenes in a court room and high level politics where featured. Also, potential trigger warning for sexual abuse. Recommended 🌟

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Arrogant, rich men thinking they can do whatever they want.
About 3/4 of the way through I wasn‘t very happy with where the ending was going, but the last few chapters mostly redeemed it.
Note, this is NOT a thriller. It‘s a moderately paced courtroom drama.

This was an enjoyable read. Interesting mix of courtroom drama and politics, and timely considering #metoo. I thought the portrayal of Kate was a bit overdrawn at the start, but after later chapters it makes a bit more sense. Ending had a bit of a twist to it as well. Overall a good read 👍🏻

(also how great is the hardcover without the dust jacket! 📖)

Kate is prosecuting James, accused of raping a coworker/lover. His wife, Sophie, believes he is innocent. This flashbacks to the past when James and Sophie are at university, and also Kate, though she was someone different then. This was just ok for me. I really dislike that it is categorized as suspense/thriller on GoodReads when it was neither.

This book grabbed me at the beginning. Kate is a lawyer for the crown. James is a minister accused of rape. Sofia is his wife. Did James really rape his assistant? Has he raped before? Can Sofia ever trust him again? How are Kate, James and Sofia intertwined?

This was rather disappointing. The topic is timely and I liked the plot and twists and resolution, but I feel like most of the first half of the book could have been edited out, as well as bits of the second half. I was looking for something with more of a sense of urgency in the pace and this was too drawn out, with too much telling rather than showing things happening.

I received a free review copy from the publisher via #netgalley.
