Jerusalem | Alan Moore
In the half a square mile of decay and demolition that was England's Saxon capital, eternity is loitering between the firetrap housing projects. Embedded in the grubby amber of the district's narrative among its saints, kings, prostitutes, and derelicts a different kind of human time is happening, a soiled simultaneity that does not differentiate between the petrolcolored puddles and the fractured dreams of those who navigate them. Fiends last mentioned in the second-century Book of Tobit wait in urine-scented stairwells, the delinquent specters of unlucky children undermine a century with tunnels, and in upstairs parlors laborers with golden blood reduce fate to a snooker tournament. An opulent mythology for those without a pot to piss in, through the labyrinthine streets and pages of Jerusalem tread ghosts that sing of wealth and poverty; of Africa, and hymns, and our threadbare millennium. They discuss English as a visionary language from John Bunyan to James Joyce, hold forth on the illusion of mortality post-Einstein, and insist upon the meanest slum as Blake's eternal holy city.Fierce in its imagining and stupefying in its scope, Alan Moore's epic novel, Jerusalem, is the tale of Everything, told from a vanished gutter.

The semi-annual library clearance sale is always good for trying new things! You'll also spot 2 brand new Barnes books in there: the tagged one and Firstlife. Anyone read these? 📚📚📚
All of these (except the 2 new ones) for $5! 💃🏽💃🏽

BethM That's a crazy good deal! Do I spot a romance?😱What is the Milwaukee one about? 12mo

I'll send it to you when I'm done (that'll be at least a few months... ) @wordslinger42 @bullbunny @LeahBergen yay!! I love hearing a book a found is loved by a Litten ☺️☺️ Can't wait to read them! And I can't believe what great condition these books are in too!! 12mo
bullbunny That is the second or third book in the series. The great thing about them, is they don't need to be read in order. Basically it's about a burned out nurse that works for a pi insurance investigation group. And in order to get info, she has to be a nurse XD plus there is a mysterious man, that always helps 😉 12mo

The Boroughs in Northhampton provides the backdrop for the epic Jerusalem. This Oikos is an #englishhouse which remains true to Moore's heritage and literary style. Could do with being hacked away at to make a more succinct, sharply formed novel but in spite of these flaws it's an unforgettable read - for all the right reasons!

Finally finished this chunkster as an audiobook. It was hard to follow on audiobook (although the narrator was amazing!) and I may reread at some point. It is a sprawling epic tale spanning ancient times to modern times. Great interesting characters that tie together in varying ways.

"It was as if life were some great big impersonal piece of machinery, like all the things they had in factories that would keep rolling on whatever happened. Getting born was just the same as getting your coat lining caught up in its wheels. Life pulled you in and that was that, you were enmeshed in all its circumstances, all its gears, until you reached the other end and got spat out, into a fancy box if you were lucky."

Thank holy heaven that's over! Honestly, only my determination to best this behemoth kept me going. Overwritten, overblown and overwrought with characterisation that veered from thin to dubious and a structure that mistakes convolution for complexity. The chapters "Upstairs" were more readable but ultimately left to languish. An absolute mess of self-indulgence and flawed rhetoric. For the love of God, is there an editor in the house?!

vivastory But, did you enjoy it? 😉 2y

vivastory @Moray_Reads I've been wanting to read this for awhile but have been intimidated, your review confirms my suspicions. A real shame, Alan Moore is great at writing graphic novels. 2y

Moray_Reads @vivastory it would have been ambitious for any writer but it just got so bogged down and tiresome and I had major issues with his perspective alongside the writing problems. Perhaps he should have played to his strengths and stayed with graphic novels 2y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk One could never characterize Moore's work as "joyful" but I definitely feel that somewhere along the way his writing soured. 2y

Whenever I head into Powell's City of Books, I avoid New Releases & Bestsellers; and hunt instead for New-To-Me Authors & Backlist Bargains. I spent most of this trip in the Gold Room (SFF) and in the Blue Room (Literature.) After hours stack stalking across 3 of the 4 stories, stairs & concrete floors; and much deliberation, I ended up w/the above pictured #BookHaul. 🙂💸📚#GetIndie

Hooked_on_books Very restrained--nice job! There are so many books there I just give up on willpower. I've seen people in line buying just one book. How do you only buy one book from Powell's?!? 2y
Dogearedcopy @Hooked_on_books I wonder the same thing! Maybe they are locals who can take Powell's for granted? Maybe it's not "Portlandia Cool" to buy more than a book at a time? No clue; but I never get out of there without spending $$$! (edited) 2y
Chelsey Many years of not enough money makes it hard for me to spend any now. I'm not a miser but I am thrifty. I have purchased only one per person from Powell's but it always breaks my heart. 2y
Dogearedcopy @Chelsey I had a similar situation when I moved to Southern Oregon 10 yrs ago: No job, no prospects, no books (too expensive to move them cross country; libraries were shuttered, and no discretionary income...) I turned into an insane book bargain hunter and hoarder, even when I eventually found a little work! I've spent the past 3 yrs getting rid of the excess; but it's been difficult to let go of the fear of being bookless again! 2y

vivastory @Moray_Reads That's too bad. It seems like he was much too ambitious. 2y
Moray_Reads @vivastory There are the makings of something great, but for me it is unnecessarily bogged down. A more selective, pared back version would have served better (and this is just my opinion at 300 pages, it may all come together gloriously by the end) 2y

I picked up this beast from my library the other day. 1200 pages, give or take, and a ridiculously tiny font (as I've tried to illustrate on the right. It's so physically difficult to read I might have to risk it and buy the Kindle edition to save my poor eyes and wrists!

tricours I've never heard of this one! How does it seem so far? 2y
saresmoore Wow, seriously! I got so frustrated by a tiny, smudgey font the other day that if there had been an open window, I would have defenestrated the silly book. I settled for donating it. It's one of the risks of buying old books online, I guess. Too bad you can't get a digital copy from your library! 2y
Moray_Reads @tricours It is very, very dense but there is some great writing. I'm only about 50 pages in but hopefully it can maintain itself over 1000+ more! The plot hasn't really kicked in yet but I'm enjoying the intricate wordiness so far 2y

I admit that Bolano's "2666" & Murakami's "1q84" are numbers (jury is still out on Murakami's). I couldn't resist the opportunity to put my treasured three volume box sets together.

Sapphire I am a Murakami fan and 1q84 is my favorite behind the first I read, which was wind up bird chronicle. People say Norwegian Wood is a good place to start with him, but I didn't care for it as much. I loved Underground, his account of the Sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. That one is generally called non fiction. Scary and powerful without the surreal aspects of his fiction writing. 3y
