So I was almost finished my book last night when I turned the light out like a responsible adult at 11pm in anticipation of a busy day at work today... then proceeded to lay in bed awake for 2 hours thinking about my busy day of work ahead 🤦🏻‍♂️

I am really liking this Holly Gibney character who has shown up, and who is clearly from the Bill Hodges trilogy, which I have not read.

Question: have I spoiled those books for myself at all by reading the Outsider? Holly has thus far revealed significant details both about Bill Hodges, and about the antagonist in their previous exploits, but I‘m not sure how “spoilery” they are.

Did I goof?

This was at its best early on when describing the lesser known years of Nintendo and of Shigeru Miyamoto, but it devolved into a pretty droll recitation of more modern hardware specifications and fairly common knowledge about gaming in general. Also the author kept saying “a” instead of “an” preceding an acronym like “snes” for example (a ess-enn-ee-ess) which drove me nuts, compounded by the fact that I listened in audio.

DaveNeufeld Ryan also really glossed over what a remarkable individual Satoru Iwata was, and how important he really is to Nintendo‘s more recent history, which is disappointing. 2y

This audiobook has some egregious mistakes in proper names and titles. Referring to the “Mario Party” series as “Mario‘s Party” and misnaming Samus Aran as Samus “Arau” are enough to make even a casual fan cringe. I‘m not sure if these mistakes were in the print or misread by the narrator, but wow, either way... You can‘t write a history book while continually confusing proper names throughout and expect to be taken seriously. 😳

On one hand, it‘s very cool to be going into Far Cry 5 with a novel‘s worth of backstory and world building under the belt! On its own though, the story was so-so for me and the ending flopped.

I can appreciate though that as an author it must be difficult to be constrained with what you can or can‘t do with a tie in property. The writing was still great at times and I wouldn‘t shy away from trying some of his other stuff.
