This doesn't have anything to do with the tagged book, but title was appropriate. ?
Such an annoying feature in some books is when they say things like "and little did she know, that was the last time she felt such joy with the people she loved" "she had no idea there would be such heartache in the times ahead"..sooo like what?? Does someone DIE? Who gets hurt? How many times can a book drop that there is doom ahead before it gets to be too much

Curious what others think of this? I hate when someone tells me that the narrator is unreliable, it takes the joy out of discovering it for myself. Is it just me? Should we put a spoiler alert if we‘re posting this information.

Cinfhen Agree, that could be a spoiler!! 1y
5feet.of.fury Maybe I‘m not thinking of it the same way, but I read a lot of domestic thrillers where the narrator is hammered by page 3, so you know the perception is going to be off there, whether they are ultimately correct or not. But would consider marking accordingly if people do find it too much of a giveaway. 1y
Cuilin @5feet.of.fury yes a drunk narrator is automatically unreliable. Good point. I think it‘s when the whole twist of the book is hanging on the fact that the narrator is unreliable that I think there should be a spoiler alert. 1y

Readergrrl Definitely do NOT want that spoiled. That moment of realizing that the author has been tricking you all along??? Going back and finding all the clues left staring one right in the face??? Waiting for friends reading the novel to finally catch on and then becoming a secret society of “We Finally Get It!”??? Exquisite!! Please do not ruin that for me! 1y
Cuilin @Readergrrl you put it better than I put it myself, that is exactly it!!!! it‘s such a joy when you discover it. 1y
TheBookHippie 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1y
ImperfectCJ I assume all narrators are unreliable, so I go into every novel looking for prevarication. I also don't put too much stock in other readers' reviews because we all have different perspectives that color our vision. These both might be an indication of trust issues on my part, but at least it helps inoculate me to spoilers. 1y
ImperfectCJ As far as spoiler alerts go, I have a very poor sense for what others find spoilery, so I try to give very few details. If I personally want to avoid spoilers, I just don't read anything about a book ahead of time, but I don't mind that other people talk about the book. A whole feed full of "spoiler alerts" would be a boring book site. 1y
Cuilin @ImperfectCJ that‘s very true and I think most littens are very sensitive and conscientious about what they post to the point of being cryptic. 😆 It‘s an art form in itself. It‘s just every now and then I see this being revealed and I wondered if it bothered others. 1y
MoonWitch94 I honestly never thought about that being something worthy of a spoiler, but you do bring up a good point. Something to consider, I think. 1y
LiteraryinLawrence This is an interesting question! For me, I think it would depend whether it‘s stated in plain view, like on the book jacket, that this is an unreliable narrator. Like that‘s the premise and if you‘re picking up the book you know that. But if it‘s something the reader has to figure out for themself, then I agree it should be marked as a spoiler. 1y
Cuilin @LiteraryinLawrence 100% agree with this distinction. 1y
Cuilin @MoonWitch94 thanks I just started thinking about this and wondered what other book readers thought. 1y
swynn I always assume a first-person narrator is unreliable, so it's not a spoiler for me. 1y

Aaaaaand GO! 😃

rretzler That is mine, as well. I have no idea why these two words are so often mistaken. 5y
Reecaspieces I hate it when they name the characters with the same first letter or their names sound the same...I know that is weird but it drives me nuts. Why would you have a John and a joe. Come on. Lol 5y
starlight97 I agree! Also I hate "she didn't realize where she was going until she got there." Like how can you just walk on the street and not know where you're headed? Or am I the only one who doesn't just wander around? 5y
See All 13 Comments
AsYouWish I have read books where they mix up the characters names and it bothers me! Example it is talking about Bob and what he is doing and all of a sudden Fred, who is no where else in the book is now doing it and then it switches back to Bob. Very confusing!!! 5y
swynn Dog deaths. Also that breath your character didn't know they'd been holding. (Who called my attention to that held-breath stuff anyway? I'd never noticed it until some Litten mentioned it and now I see it *everywhere*!) 5y
Tera0707 “Would of” instead of “would‘ve” 😬 5y
UwannaPublishme Bad grammar makes me cringe! 😱 5y
Naj Overwriting. Don't use words just for the sake of using words. Also, non-sensical metaphors especially to make the writing more flowery or romantic. 5y
LDuffN When one character calls another by a nickname and then for the rest of the book, the name is changed to the nickname. 5y
Jemgirl2014 When authors use disinterested instead of uninterested. Why don't they know the difference? lol 5y
StellaDz The buildup to nothing. It‘s a waste of my time and I hate it!! If it happens in a book, I‘m done! 5y
hwestfall It drives me crazy when characters fall in love with their sibling. It's just weird. Even if it turns out they aren't related but the whole time they think they are 🤮 5y
dragondrool Using "loose" when the word is "lose". Cringe! 5y

This has been on my mind a lot lately. I am sick of hearing the misuse of "nauseous." I think when I hear people say it, I may just start telling them to look it up--it doesn't mean what you think. I suppose I'm feeling a but snobby today.

Crazeedi That's ok, you're allowed! Have a happy new year sweetie! 5y

callunakeep I can take credit for Moonshadow!😂🤣. I brought her home as a kitten when I was 16 and you were 7! thereadingowlvina Oh yes, cheesiness! 😉 Thanks for sharing 🙋 6y

Literary pet peeve increasingly found in books published in the last couple of years-characters talking about their awareness of their own/another character's privilege. Want me to know that your character is aware? Or not aware? Show me, don't tell me. Don't state it and leave it. Otherwise it feels like the author is just checking off a current issues/buzzwords box on their book's outline. It isn't "woke"; it's lazy. Do better or don't do it.

Texreader I agree with your pet peeve. Show us don't tell us!! And this type of reference in particular must be annoying. 7y
Sarahreadstoomuch YES!! Show us! And show us in a realistic way, not a sudden moment of clarity. 7y

A few days late for #bookishpetpeeves but here goes:

When you download a kindle sample and the first three-quarters are taken up by blurbs, introductions and other front matter. Grrr! You end up with about three pages worth of book to "sample"!

/end rant

#marchintoreading

Sace I'm starting to notice a lot more reviewy stuff on Amazon. Time was you could quickly get to a synopsis/book description/sample. No amount of glowing reviews is going to make me buy a book. Just let me see a synopsis or the first few pages! 7y
Marchpane @Sace Right? I like to read a good-sized sample to get a feel for the writing style and see if the story hooks me, before handing over my money! 7y

mjdowens I actually emailed a publisher about that. The entire sample was just the introduction and the chapters, that's it. I was so pissed! 7y

#marchintoreading All my #bookishpetpeeves have been enumerated by everyone already. But my biggest is when someone declares they don't read or don't see the need for reading. It just seems to me to be such a willful clinging to ignorance & cowardice 😳😱😡😥

ReadingSusan @LeslieO yes that makes me want to bonk them over the head with a heavy book 😂 7y
prowlix I get more frustrated at the condescending "I just don't seem to find the time to read, how do you do it?" ? 7y
Redjewel_7734 @prowlix I know...I hate that one, esp. because you know they are probably just staring mindlessly at a tv or surfing social media (not that I don't do some of that too, but I know books give me so much more & prioritize them above the others-1 reason I gave up FB). 7y
RadicalReader @Redjewel_7734 so awesome to enjoy the wonderful joys of reading 7y
RadicalReader @ReadingSusan what is the heaviest book you have read? 7y
Redjewel_7734 @RadicalReader It's one of the greatest joys in life to me 💜 7y

#bookishpetpeeve is when bookstores have series of books in alphabetical order instead of chronological order. I know why they do it, I get it. I do, I just don't want to be accidentally spoiled because I grabbed what I thought might be the first in the series. Also, security stickers in the middle of the page. #marchintoreading

GypsyKat Haha! I have that same pet peeve! This is exactly why I DON'T organize my bookshelves in alphabetical order! (edited) 7y
haileybean Mine aren't in alphabetical order either, but you can bet the series I have are in chronological order - as they should be. Except, The Chronicles of Narnia which are in the order C.S. Lewis wrote them. 7y

Smell is my superpower, so my bookish pet peeve is when library books reek of funky smells.

I love bacon, but don't want a book that smells like it's been left in a smoker 😂

Rachbb3 Ew, that would be annoying. 7y
