The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld
The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld | Terry Pratchett
13 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
For more than two decades, Terry Pratchett has been regaling readers with tales of Discworlda flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants, which are standing on the back of a giant turtle, flying through space. It is a world populated by ineffectual wizards and sharp-as-tacks witches, by tired policemen and devious dictators, by reformed thieves and vampires who have sworn to drink no blood. It is a world that is vastly different from our own . . . except when it isn't. Now, in The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld, various nuggets of Pratchett's witty commentary and sagacious observations have been compiled by Pratchett expert Stephen Briggs, a man who, they say, knows even more about Discworld than Terry Pratchett. Within these pages, you'll find musings on: Interior decorating: "It's a fact known throughout the universes that no matter how carefully the colors are chosen, institutional decor ends up as either vomit green, unmentionable brown, nicotine yellow, or surgical appliance pink. By some little-understood process of sympathetic resonance, corridors painted in those colors always smell slightly of boiled cabbageeven if no cabbage is ever cooked in the vicinity." (Equal Rites) Travel: "Any seasoned traveler soon learns to avoid anything wished on them as a 'regional speciality,' because all the term means is that the dish is so unpleasant the people living everywhere else will bite off their own legs rather than eat it. But hosts still press it upon distant guests anyway: 'Go on, have the dog's head stuffed with macerated cabbage and pork nosesit's a regional speciality.'" (The Last Continent) Young men: "And then there was the young male walk. At least women swung only their hips. Young men swung everything, from the shoulders down. You have to try to occupy a lot of space. It makes you look bigger, like a tomcat fluffing his tail. The boys tried to walk big in self-defense against all those other big boys out there. I'm bad, I'm fierce, I'm cool, I'd like a pint of shandy and me mam wants me home by nine." (Monstrous Regiment) Class: "'Old money' meant that it had been made so long ago that the black deeds that had originally filled the coffers were now historically irrelevant. Funny, that; a brigand for a father was something you kept quiet about, but a slave-taking pirate for a great-great-great-grandfather was something to boast of over the port. Time turned the evil bastards into rogues, and rogue was a word with a twinkle in its eye and nothing to be ashamed of." (Making Money) . . . and more! Culled from all the Discworld novels, The Wit and Wisdom of Discworld confirms Pratchett's place in the pantheon of great satirists and proves why the Chicago Tribune has praised his Discworld as "entertaining and gloriously funny . . . an accomplishment nothing short of magical."

DrexEdit I confess I didn't read this so much as skim it. Well I've read all the books already, haven't I? I wish they'd come out with an updated deluxe edition now that Discworld is complete. 2y
julesG @DrexEdit I agree, an updated edition would be great. 2y
khooliha I wish it had been organized by subject, or something. Also, I feel like the balance between wit and wisdom is off? Maybe I'm remembering wrongly. 2y
julesG @khooliha It's a nice collection of quotes for me. 2y

Pickpick

Quotes from the entire Discworld series. ❤️

I feel like I can‘t rate this any lower than a pick because it is exactly what it says it is, & includes every line I‘ve ever highlighted, marked with a post it, underlined, or shared on social media.

Honestly, this should have been organized by subject. Reading these in book order just made me want to read all the books again. And the index definitely needed another pass by an editor. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

This book would be more fun if it was organized by topic - possibly less repetitious too! As is, I find it pretty needless, but cannot fault the quotes. The books are good!

julesG I find it messy, too. 2y

Going Postal was the first one I bought, the only one I bought brand new, and I loved it....I didn‘t even realize it was a series then. It wasn‘t until many years later that I stumbled upon Wee Free Men and then started picking them up whenever I saw them at library sales, goodwill, etc. I still haven‘t found them all, but I‘m getting closer.

Gezemice Awesome! We have quite a few - some twice, lol. I hope you will get to them! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice @TricksyTails is organizing a buddy read for next year, I tagged you over there too. 6y

'It's turtles all the way down'

Okay, I know this is a tortoise. It's my tortoise Colin, to be specific, but it's close enough.

'Of course the downside to having an open mind is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.'

Perhaps peerless in his acute and hilarious observations of the human condition, there'll never be another Pratchett, and that he managed to couch his incisive observations about human nature and philosophy in the narrative of tales, only makes things better. Here's a pretty #title page.

Laalaleighh @Tcip it's amazing. If you're a zelda person you should definitely put it on your have to have list. It may be the single best thing I have ever played. 7y
Laalaleighh @RealLifeReading thank you! I got them all pretty discounted from bookdepository.com they're gorgeous hardback editions and they're cheaper than the mass market paperbacks in the stores! 7y
Laalaleighh @vivastory thank you. I had the whole set in paperback but they got lost in a storage mix up after we moved. I spent about three years trying to get them back and finally decided to replace them. 7y
Laalaleighh @lizpixie I'll be missing a lot of other things I was planning on doing the next few months to make up for these, but I was so afraid they would sell out and the prices on them were so reasonable that it felt it was worth it. If I ever lose them I'm going to completely freak out though haha. 7y
Sue Oh, my. ❤ 7y
RealLifeReading Ok I just went to look at book depository (silly me) and those are such good prices! Tempting!!!!!! 7y
Laalaleighh @RealLifeReading right?! It's pretty hard to resist! 7y
Velvetsun God, I'm so jealous. I might have to be spending even more $$ at Book Depository. 7y
