Well of Lost Plots
Well of Lost Plots | Jasper Fforde
The third installment in Jasper Fforde s "New York Times "bestselling series follows literary detective Thursday Next on another adventure in her alternate reality of literature-obsessed England Jasper Fforde has done it again in this genre-bending blend of crime fiction, fantasy, and top-drawer literary entertainment. After two rollicking "New York Times" bestselling adventures through Western literature, resourceful BookWorld literary detective Thursday Next definitely needs some downtime. And what better place for a respite than in the hidden depths of the Well of Lost Plots, where all unpublished books reside? But peace and quiet remain elusive for Thursday, who soon discovers that the Well is a veritable linguistic free-for-all, where grammasites run rampant, plot devices are hawked on the black market, and lousy books like the one she has taken up residence in are scrapped for salvage. To make matters worse, a murderer is stalking the personnel of Jurisfiction and it s up to Thursday to save the day. A brilliant feat of literary showmanship filled with wit, fantasy, and effervescent originality, this Ffordian tour de forcewill appeal to fans of Douglas Adams and P. G. Wodehouse. Thursday s zany investigations continue with "Something Rotten." Look for the five other bestselling Thursday Next novels, including "One of Our Thursdays is Missing" and Jasper Fforde s latest bestseller, "The Woman Who Died A Lot." Starting book 3 in this series! I am hooked. 😍

Notice the Amazon box on our fireplace? When we moved in over summer, we had a bat colony living in there due to a broken damper. We had experts come look at removal, but they said couldn't happen until August. We called again in Sept, and they said they wouldn't remove the bats until we had our chimney fixed. The chimney guy said he wouldn't fix it until he knew the bats were gone. (Go to comments)

Rachel.Rencher So, we're kind of living with Schrodinger's batcave right now. Are there bats in there? We don't think so, but I cannot get on a chimney repairman's schedule until spring at this point, so we are stuck with it until further notice. There's no chirping and we haven't seen any in months, but I am NOT risking another bat in my living room. 😅 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO I love this author! 3mo
Ruthiella I didn‘t know bats chirped? 🦇 I would also NOT want a bat in the house. The worst I‘ve had to deal with is lizards. 🦎 (edited) 3mo

Aims42 Oh my 🫣 I agree with you, I‘d take looking at an Amazon box over the fear of a bat coming for a visit. Yikes! As for your book… I have the first book in this series on my TBR pile, I keep waiting to be in the right mood for it. Hoping to read it soon! 🤗 3mo

1) Well of Lost Plots was my last 5 star book. I can not go past a book that makes me laugh!
2)I will bail on a book if they have too much exposition in the opening chapter(s). I would much rather get to know the characters than have them vomited at me.
3) My new favorite is James Islington who wrote The Shadow of What Was Lost.

Thursday is hiding out in the out in a generic murder mystery in the making down in the well of lost plots. That does not mean she is safe at work at Jurisfiction where the newest operating system for books is ready to roll out and she is still dealing with the repercussions of changing the end of Jane Eyre. The books are great! So funny. 5/5 stars.

This series continues to be incredibly entertaining. I didn‘t love it as much as the second one, but the level of creativity here is still astounding. I‘ll definitely be listening to the rest - the audiobook narration is excellent. (Also, Pickwick 💕)

After all, reading is arguably a far more creative and imaginative process than writing... readers... should reserve as much praise for themselves as they do for the writer - perhaps more.

Books - are a kind of magic.

I've read this book before. I am working my way through the series again. I do love this book. I think this is where Fforde's creativity really begins to shine. The Nursery Crime series spun off from the book in this series. I am so eager to continue with the remaining books. I also read this in 3/2009.

I've read several rave reviews of this book, and I very much enjoyed the first two in the series. Jasper Fforde is terribly clever, of that there is no doubt. I felt that what passes for a plot in this book was little more than a collection of "Jasper Fforde is so very clever" moments loosely stitched together and tied up in a clever little bow in the last 20 pages. Maybe I read it during The Bookies.

I'm beginning to think the title of this book is a bit too apt. 111 pages in, and I have yet to see even the faintest glimmer of plot on the horizon. Stick with it, or bail?

This series just keeps getting better and better. Bookworld is such an interesting environment, and the characters just keep getting more inventive. Even though I have so many plans for my TBR, I really want to read the next book NOW! I enjoy jumping down this rabbit hole.

drokka Ow that you've been to Bookworld, one of the characters is the protagonist in a (so far) two book spin-off series called the Nursery Crimes. Also fun literary romps 7y

This one has a story... I purchased this UK edition before the US pub date, in an NYC bookstore. When the book came out in the US, I was living near San Francisco & Fforde did a signing nearby. But my copy was in LA, on loan to @KristyJ - so I bought her a copy & had it signed in SF, and she took my copy to a signing in LA. When she met Fforde & explained the situation, he said, "Oh, right! Your friend said you'd be here!" ??#signed #readjanuary

WOLP is a delightful view of the Book World. I will never look at my Nano novels and their collection of characters the same way again! Good old Mrs. Danvers, though I prefer the cloned army of many Mrs. Danvers that is usually deployed to fight the Mispeling Vyrus inside the book world of Thursday Next. She is super creepy in "Rebecca", but they come in handy in "The Well of Lost Plots" ?

elkeOriginal @Texreader As @jetspins24 mentioned, in Fforde's Thursday Next books there is an army of cloned Mrs. Danvers deployed as a special forces unit to fight the Mispeling Vyrus. Best re-use of an infamous villain ever! 8y
jetspins24 @elkeo - this would be my favorite lit. reference in the series if not for the scene with Thursday and Miss Havishsam supervising the mandatory group rage therapy session for the characters of Wuthering Heights, where they gather to rant about why each of them hates Heathcliff. That is just hysterical. The whole series is brilliant and hilarious. 8y
