Deal Breaker: The First Myron Bolitar Novel
Deal Breaker: The First Myron Bolitar Novel | Harlan Coben
36 posts | 68 read | 24 to read
The debut of Myron Bolitar, a hotheaded, tenderhearted sports agent and one of the most fascinating and complex heroes in suspense fiction, "Deal Breaker "is a page-turning classic from Edgar Award winner and master storyteller Harlan Coben. One of the most engaging heroes in mystery fiction. Dennis Lehane Sports agent Myron Bolitar is poised on the edge of the big time. So is Christian Steele, a rookie quarterback and Myron s prized client. But when Christian gets a phone call from a former girlfriend a woman who everyone, including the police, believes is dead the deal starts to go sour. Trying to unravel the truth about a family s tragedy, a woman s secret, and a man s lies, Myron is up against the dark side of his business where image and talent make you rich, but the truth can get you killed. What sets Harlan Coben above the crowd are wit and wicked nonchalance. "Los Angeles Times""

I wasn‘t sure I‘d like it with all the references to sports, but I did. And there were a lot. But the mystery and what happened to Kathy kept me interested. And even the sports negotiations were interesting – or, what was happening around those negotiations was interesting. I liked Jessica and her relationship with Myron; not too sure about Myron‘s friend, Win – he‘s a bit scary!

RamsFan1963 For me, Win was always my favorite part of the series. 11mo
LibraryCin @RamsFan1963 I'm curious now how or if he'll change over the course of the series. 11mo

This isn‘t my favorite Myron Bolitar, but it is the first in this fantastic series. It introduced me to Myron & Win and their amazing friendship as well as a great, quirky cast of characters.
Harlan Coben is a must read author for me.

Love the Myron Bolitar series. There are lines in this that always make me #LaughOutLoud. Always feel in a better mood after reading these. The tagged book is the first book in the series.

@Eggs @AlwaysBeenALoverOfBooks

Suzze I‘m a character in a couple of books in this series! Live Wire and maybe Darkest Fear. I can‘t believe I‘ve forgotten! Harlan liked my name when we were both in the DorothyL mystery group many, many years ago. 2y
Deblovestoread @Suzze. DorothyL was one of my first group experiences on the internet all those years ago. I was mostly a lurker but it was a fun group. 2y
Suzze @Kdgordon88 It was! Once when the group was on hiatus one of the women started a group called TeaBuds, to get us through the hiatus. It was just women, fans and authors, about 80 of us originally. We all loved it so much, we kept it open after DorothyL was back. It kept going until last year when Yahoo Groups folded. 2y

1) According to StoryGraph my top 10 are:

- Harlan Coben
- Agatha Christie
- Brian K. Vaughan
- JK Rowling
- David Mitchell
- Neil Gaiman
- Chris Brookmyre
- George RR Martin
- Carlos Ruiz Zafon
- Haruki Murakami

(Coben & Christie lead by a long way!)

2) My beanbag! Or a nice café.

3) Not really, because I'm never sure what the rules are 😳😊

Yuki_Onna Great choices! 📚 I really must try Harlan Coben... Haven't read anything by him yet... 🙄 Your beanbag sounds and looks so cosy - perfect reading spot! 😊 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna I'm not sure how well his books have aged, but he's really good at twisty turny plots! Maybe try a standalone (e.g. The Woods) to see if you like his style 😊 2y
Yuki_Onna Thank you for recommending a starting point!!😊 His backlist is so impressively long... Oh, don't worry, I like books written before the 2000s.😊 You know we share (among others) Agatha Christie as a fave author. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna Oh yes, Agatha Christie is the Queen of Crime... I'm reading one by her at the moment, but I know the episode pretty much by heart so it's less exciting 😅 2y

Myron Bolitar is the sports agent representing rookie quarterback, Christian Steele. Everyone thought Christian‘s ex-girlfriend was dead, but those opinions change fast when he gets a phone call from his presumed-deceased ex.

Myron begins the journey into discovering the truth, and it is certainly a dark twisty road.

I love that Win was referenced in this book, as I recently finished the first book in the new Windsor Horne Lockwood III series!

Been in the office this morning, weird feeling, been told to clear our desks as they may be used for hot desks. Still not sure where anyone is sitting in the new academic year.
But one of my fave cafes is open so treating myself to lunch and a read.

Avanders Mmm looks delish. What is a “hot desk”? 🤔 3y
Smrloomis Yeah what‘s a hot desk? 3y
See All 28 Comments
Amiable I‘m guessing a hot desk is one that various people can use when they are in the office? As in, it‘s not specifically assigned to any one person? In our office we call those “touchdown desks” or “hotel cubes.” 😀 3y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Urgh, hot desking is weird and kind of strange to bring it in during a pandemic. Good luck! 3y
Lindy That sounds stressful. In the early planning stages for a new library to replace an existing one, staff were invited to comment. Hot desks were part of the design for the back work area and I remember one colleague saying she would rather forego a washroom and pee in the bushes than not have her own computer. 3y
KathyWheeler @Lindy I agree with your colleague! 3y
TrishB @Lindy I agree! I am getting the backlash from my team too. It‘s a mess. 3y
Lindy @KathyWheeler Fortunately, in the final design, the full time staff did end up with their own desks and computers, and part time staff were paired at desks. 3y
TrishB @Avanders @Smrloomis shared desks 😞 3y
TrishB @Amiable @thegirlwiththelibrarybag it‘s bonkers in a pandemic, my team are livid! 3y
MicheleinPhilly Nice that you got a small bit of normalcy. HATE the concept of “hoteling” which is what our industry is calling it. I don‘t think they‘ll go for it as a permanent solution because NO ONE wants to do it. More seniority wants their space and their stuff. Low seniority doesn‘t want to be shoved in an office with multiple employees. 3y
MicheleinPhilly As I‘ve told my dept., “If you ever thought you were getting me to come back to the office, 2020/2021 killed that FOR GOOD.” I don‘t much like being around people in “normal” times. 3y
Smrloomis Oh, wow, that‘s surprising 😳 3y
Lindy @TrishB I‘m sorry that this is happening and I hope the decision will be reconsidered. Now, more than ever, people need a sense of stability. 3y
batsy That is stressful :/ (Lunch looks delish though and I hope it perked you up.) 3y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm That sounds insane during a pandemic. Your lunch has definitely amped up my own appetite! 🤤😅 3y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly I just googled “hoteling“ *sigh* It seems at least in part another way for companies to increasingly rely on part-time employees under the guise of “allowing employees flexibility“ 3y
vivastory Plus the shared workspace is literally one of my ideas of hell. I'm pretty sure if Dante was to write Inferno today there'd be a level that would include a giant table with no privacy at all 3y
MicheleinPhilly @vivastory Same. I literally cried with relief when they told me to WFH full time because they had run out of office space. They had me in an open carrel next to a printer for like 3 months. My stank face became even more legendary. 3y
vivastory @MicheleinPhilly That would have been terrible....I'm not sure what would have been worse: the noise from the printer, or having to endure countless small talk from colleagues. I feel like one of the vastly underrated side effects of wearing a mask is that it hides my RBF pretty well. I now assume that everyone with a mask has RBF 3y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @Smrloomis @Lindy @batsy @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @vivastory I normally have my own office, with a door. It‘s lovely and mine. I‘m not sure how much more crap I can take at the moment. Job adverts here I come. 3y
Amiable @vivastory LOL… one of my colleagues and I talk all the time about wanting to wear our masks even on Zoom calls so we can hide our RBFs! Although it still doesn‘t disguise the eyeball rolls. 🙄 3y
MicheleinPhilly @Amiable @vivastory I now have a permanent divot between my eyebrows. 🤨 3y
KathyWheeler @Lindy that‘s better at least! 3y
WJCintron That looks so good! I hope you enjoyed the read!! 3y
rockpools That‘s crazy in your job. Are they assuming you‘ll be mostly wfh? As we were a new team that started during lockdown, they‘ve decided our to-be office could be hired out to make some cash. So we‘re wfh and hotdesking in random libraries forever now🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
TrishB @rockpools a cynical person would say they are making it as difficult as possible to come in!! 3y

Fun, soapy brain candy. Good for listening while doing chores. Typical twisty Coben with a cheesiness that is reminiscent of old noir detective fiction/film. Bad jokes and cliche but I‘ll be damned if I won‘t listen to the next one in the series. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Myron Bolitar series is one of my dad‘s favorites, so I wanted to give it a try. I read book one, and it was a fairly enjoyable read with some mystery and some humor. The most striking thing to me, though, was how firmly it was rooted in the 90s. Here are some classic references, for your entertainment and nostalgia! 😋

Harlan Coben, another of my favorite authors! Don‘t know why it took me so long to start this series but I'm glad I did. I found Myron Bolitar a very likable character with great wit and sarcasm. Harlan Coben has cooked up some unique characters and I can't wait to get back to them. I thought this book was very entertaining but also very gruesome. It left me guessing right up to the end as it had many twists and turns. Book 1 Myron Bolitar series.

#RockinMay Day 13 I'm secretly in love with a psychopath, no not Joe (although I have a thing for him, too) it's Windsor "Win" Horne Lockwood, III from the Myron Bolitar series. Definitely the #DangerousType Win would best be described as an anti-hero. He shows no aversion to violence and seems to enjoy inflicting pain and killing those he believes deserve it. He does have a moral code though, he protects the innocents & sides with the underdog ?

Andrew65 @TrishB I love Harlan Coben, one of my favourite authors. He has one main series, The Myron Bolitar Series and love everyone, a great group of characters and tons of humour in them - in fact often make me laugh out loud. Read them all and sorely tempted to read them again. He is a sports agent and gets involved in mysteries, later in the series he also represents movie stars. My wife hates sport but loves these too as sport really is incidental. 7y
Andrew65 @TrishB He also has a spin of series by Myron's nephew (3 books) which are more YA but still enjoyed them. Then he has a lot of mystery books as standalones. He is the master of the unexpected twist and even when you think everything is resolved one more twist you never saw coming hits you. Love his standalones as well. 7y
