The themes of The Scarlet Letter are pretty timeless; it‘s not hard to see why it‘s been adapted a few million times. It‘s a good one to talk about at parties, but the way it‘s written isn‘t all that engaging (Hawthorne desperately needed an editor). I probably won‘t read it again, but you should give it a go if you‘re into an old-timey Gilmore Girls. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-scarlet-letter-nathaniel-hawthorne/

Hester‘s curiosity & mischievousness got the best of her, and I had to make the hard decision to let her go.
.
She wasn‘t around for a long time, but she definitely made it a good time.
.
I couldn‘t be there with her because I‘m 8,000 miles away on a layover in South Korea while strangers stare at me as I cry. But I‘m lucky she‘s been so well cared for by a great vet team and loved by her second-favorite human.

Okay, so every time I hear the song #pocketfulofsunshine, I think of the movie Easy A, where Emma Stone hates the song but gets hooked on it over the course of a weekend. So funny! And of course, Easy A is a modern take on the tagged book. #songsofsummer

#30junebooks @howjessreads #uglycover I am definitely judging these books by their covers! This prompt was tough because I love pretty books and most of what I have in my library is nice. I had to go into our pile for goodwill to find these classics. What were the publishers thinking?

When it comes to #hardcovervspaperback my collection seems to suggest that I‘m on the side of the paperback. Out of over two hundred books, less than two dozen are hardcover. Not sure why this huge discrepancy, other than frugality?

Anyway, the photo is of a rare case where I decided to replace an existing edition (blue) with a new one (red)... but haven‘t gotten rid of the existing yet. 😳

Tamra For me it‘s frugality and ease of reading - I find soft covers easier to tote and hold. 4mo

Book #17: This is one of those "forced to read in college" books for me. I didn't get it at the time and that makes me want to go back and see if I better understand it now. At the time I had felt that the beginning was extremely slow and that had a tendency to drive people away from the book (at least that's how I felt). However, the book does...

Wasn‘t supposed to buy any new books this year till I‘d finished the ones already on my shelf... then I did a long distance swimming event and came in under my “stretch goal” time, and now here we are with this #bookoutlethaul

The Scarlet Letter is the only one I‘ve already read, and as one of my all time favourites, I needed to add it to my collection. I do have a copy, but it‘s in a bind up with other SUPER BORING Hawthorne books.

This is one of those days I‘m really glad books come in all shapes and sizes. Yes, e-books are awesome & I never leave home without one but when you have a pint-sized copy of the tagged book you can shove in your bag, why not?!? I don‘t know how much reading time I‘ll have today but I‘m ready!

I scored a new old book for my collection today. A second printing of The Scarlett Letter from 1893. Given as a gift, likely 1896 given the condition and style of the penmanship. (The flap on the right is from my other old Hawthorne book Twice Told Tales.) These are small, only 4 and 1/4 by 6 inches. Likely to fit easily into a jacket pocket.

My first Hawthorne - on the one hand I found his long and impassioned sentences a bit wearying - but on the other hand, what a story! What must it have been in 1850 to present such a sympathetic picture of a “fallen” woman? And to juxtapose her single “sin” against her public shaming to show the hypocrisy of the town? I felt Hawthorne thought long and hard about the hardships that abounded in being female - some feminist inklings perhaps?

Ruthiella I agree this book was pretty forward thinking in a lot of ways! 😀 9mo

What beautiful descriptive language Nathaniel Hawthorne writes with! The beginning up to the climactic middle of the story was very compelling, although the last few chapters dragged out more than I would have liked. Overall, a lovely piece that focuses on the fact that all have, "Sinned and come short of the glory of God," but hiding that sin does not make you free.

10. Ugly cover

Think this is rather ugly. I like the stylized A, but the red satiny material has nothing to do with the story. It probably shows that the cover designer never read the book.

This is my Dickens. This book made me realize I was a feminist. I HATE pretty much everything out it. The only thing worse is the admin Moore movie which we watched in class. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

ravenlee Such a good movie! Your post made me think of the classroom scene with the girl who thinks Hester brought it all on herself. 😒 and how so many people read it that way. I reread it after seeing the movie and it was totally different than my first reading in high school. (edited) 1y

This challenge was far harder than I expected! So I decided to narrow it down by focusing only on the many influential books read throughout my school years. And still it was tough...

That being said, I chose The Scarlet Letter. The twisted romance, the scandal, & most importantly the courage & brazenness that is Hester Prynne made for a great story. My rebellious self loved it!

I know I'm pretty late in the day, but here is #Aprilbookishmadness number 12: A bookish pregnancy! Is there a more well known pregnancy in literature than the one in The Scarlet Letter? (I mean, Bella Swan's pregnancy is a close second but...😉) (Also, you may notice I buy a lot of used/cheap books--it's the only way to get my fix 😊)

kgriffith Maybe the immaculate conception? ;) PS I know it‘s probably a weird quirk but I love when people stack books they‘ve already read from my posts and I can see their rating right from there! 2y
jwashreads @kgriffith that is a good point--Mary's pregnancy trumps Hester's. And I try to add from people's posts whenever I see something I've read because it would take FOREVER to log all the books I've read into Litsy by just looking them up. I'm glad I'm not the only one! 2y
kgriffith @jwashreads Absolutely! My Litsy “have read” is everything since I joined, things I‘ve stacked from other people‘s posts, and things I‘ve added during testing for work (may as well have those sorts of things be doubly productive, no??) 2y

Day 11: Misunderstood
I understand why we ask teenagers to read the classics because when else are some of them going to be exposed to it? But sadly I think that their small egocentric world view sometimes inhibits their appreciation for literature. I love The Scarlet Letter but when my daughter and her friends had to read it as Juniors, they hated it. Sigh.
#ReadingResolitions

lauraodom Not that we shouldn‘t have them read it! But I think we all should go back as adults and re-read some things we “had” to read in high school. I‘m sure we‘d have a much different take on some of the stories. 2y
